Nikki's Graduation! - by Guest Blogger Allen!

by Allen Roda
billtron

Their existing awards weren't good enough for you, Nikki? Huh?

Justifiably Proud and Happy Graduate - the red rope is for her commitment to community service

On Friday May 3rd, I had the pleasure of witnessing perhaps the most amazing event I have ever seen. While I was anticipating the usual pomp and circumstance of graduation, I don’t think I could have ever guessed that Nikki's graduation ceremony would be so special and so meaningful.

Candelores and Rodas on the front row

It began in the usual way with speeches and platitudes about the value of education and all of those things. I really appreciated that they introduced each of the PhD students individually and briefly discussed their research before presenting them with degrees. I doubt NYU will do anything like that.

Then they started presenting student awards. Nikki had said something that morning about there being awards given out for academic achievement and professional promise, as well as one that was chosen by the students to honor a fellow student dedicated to "service, empathy, confidence-building, industry and responsibility." When they began to announce these awards, I was just sure that Nikki was going to get one, because she was such an awesome student – how could she not? Alas, the awards went to other students – who most certainly deserved them – but since I am Nikki’s husband I am allowed to be biased.

Then I saw on the program that a “Special Award” was next to be presented. It was unclear what that meant.  The Dean began by explaining that the two awards that they school currently gives out were both established in the honor of retiring faculty who had given much of their lives to the School of Information. The school has not instituted a new award for students in 41 years, but decided the time had come.

Rodas anticipate that Nikki might be getting this new special award.

And rather than honor a faculty member, this time they were going to honor a student. A student, who in two short years had done so much for the School of Information that the only way they could think to acknowledge her impact was to create an award in her honor.

At this point, the lights dimmed, and they began a video slide show in homage to Nikki Roda – the first and only student in the history of UM School of Information to have an award established in her honor.  The pictures were captioned with quotes from friends and colleagues that highlighted just how special a person Nikki Candelore Roda is.

Fast forward to 1:02:14 to get to the good part

You can also see the commencement video HERE and read a description of the awards – .

If you can't read all the captions in the video, I typed them out for you:
A True Leader
Setting the Pace in the Classroom
SOCHI Officer
A2DataDive Founder
Spirit of Service
Fierce Drive
Intellectual Courage
Innovator
Vibrant
Lasting Legacy
Deep Involvement
Self-Motivated

It is really hard to capture in words just how magical an experience it was. At the end of the video, the entire audience began to cheer loudly. There was a standing ovation from all of the students - as well as their families as Nikki walked up to the stage - It. Was. Amazing.

The honor wasn’t for Nikki’s any particular achievement – although they cited all the work she did for the DataDive, the Student Clubs and Organizations, Alternate Spring Break, and Service Day as examples of ways in which she gave back to the School and the community – no the award wasn’t for any of those accomplishments, it was for being who Nikki is. A person who doesn’t just talk about doing things, but gets them done – whose heart is so full, so generous, and caring that she can’t help herself but to help others when she has the ability and the opportunity.

As she explained in planning the first A2 DataDive – “We have the Skills, We’d be doing something really good for the world, and It would be really cool.”

None of us knew this was coming

The Dean used those same words in introducing Nikki, the first recipient of the Nikki Candelore Roda Student Impact Award.  The award not only honors Nikki’s tireless spirit, infectious enthusiasm, and indomitable will to do good, but it reflects the University’s ongoing commitment to community service.  The A2 DataDive, which she established (with the help of Claire Barco and Emily Puckett-Rogers) is going to become an annual event sponsored by the University and overseen by the office of student affairs. Her legacy will be felt at UMSI every year as they plan this event, and every spring when they honor a student whose commitment to service warrants special recognition.

After he presented her the award, without any preparation, he asked Nikki to say a few words.  She really didn't know this was going to happen; it caught us all by surprise. Most of us were impressed that she was even able to talk at all. Not only did she deliver a speech, but it was touching, eloquent, and on point. She thanked everyone for their support and expressed how meaningful it had been for her to learn from her students and learn to work together. She was humble and gracious. When she finished, there was another instant standing ovation (truncated in the video). Not just from the students, but from all of the students’ family members who didn’t even know who Nikki was before that day. The speeches and the discussions of who Nikki is – not just what she had done - moved everyone in the auditorium to their feet. It was amazing.

This is a heavy honor.  One that we don’t take lightly – and so – I think it is hard for Nikki to talk about it herself. But I don’t have any difficulty at all telling you and the entire world that my wife is AMAZING. Everyone loves her, is proud of her, and rejoices in her accomplishments. As someone who has known for a long time just how awesome Nikki is, I am overwhelmed with joy and pride to see her University express a similar level of gratitude and pride. This is perhaps the highest honor they could have possibly bestowed on Nikki – and the highest honor they have ever bestowed on a student.  It’s. Just. Incredible. – and there really aren’t sufficient words to describe it.
The Rodas and the Candelores were all in attendance. We had great seats right behind the graduates. And since we were all so overjoyed with the occasion, it’s no surprise that we managed to get some good pictures. Without further ado, here are some of my favorites.

Justin Bieber Breaks Istanbul Concert For Muslim Call To Prayer

by Alyssa Rosenberg

Justin Bieber has had what might be politely termed an awkward spring so far, whether he was joking about whether Anne Frank would have been a fan of his—an idea brilliantly satirized in the New Yorker by Yoni Brenner, who sketched out a vision of World War II in which the Nazis are defeated by Belieberism—and ran into trouble with his pet monkey. But as The Hollywood Reporter notes, he appears to have gotten one gesture of international cooperation right:

Amid an international tour plagued with missteps, Justin Bieber is being recognized for doing good during Thursday’s concert in Turkey. The pop star paused twice during his Istanbul performance to honor Azan–the Islamic call to prayer Muslims observe five times daily. “I’m not a Justin Bieber fan but as a Muslim, I got a lot of respect for him cos of what he did,” one Twitter user posted user after E! Online first reported the news. Wrote another, “You can hate all you want, but he earned my respect.” Later adding: “Muslim performers don’t even do what you did.”

There’s a lot of talk about a culture war without the boundaries of the United States itself. But American culture—or in this case, hybrid Canadian-American cultural products—is also a powerful export internationally. If Woodie Guthrie’s guitar was a machine that killed fascists, teenybop pop can produce earworms that transcend religious practice, national origin, and gender. Bieber’s gesture of respect is a proffer of sorts, a suggestion that religious practice and pop music can coexist—and that Christians are perfectly capable of being respectful of the practices of people of other faith traditions—and those who say it can’t are putting quarrels in the mouths of Western artists. If there’s an international culture war underway, a side that offers both the possibility of devotion and opportunities for pleasure may have one up on a party that shuts many participants out of both.

“Norwich — The Selectboard has decided to build a new 180-foot communications tower, for municipal purposes only, without the help of a private firm. Last night’s action marks a course reversal for Town Manager Neil Fulton, who last summer negotiated with Springfield, Vt.-based broadband provider VTel to build and operate the tower on New Boston Road for its own commercial use, in exchange for allowing the town free access to install new emergency radio communications equipment. The deal was billed as a win-win: Norwich would get the tower it needed at a minimal cost, and VTel would be able to provide high-speed Internet service in an area in sore need of it. But many Norwich residents were uncomfortable with handing the tower over to a private operator and organized a vote at Town Meeting earlier this month to authorize the town to borrow money in order to build the tower itself. A majority of the Selectboard was initially in favor of the VTel deal, but changed its mind after residents made their sentiments clear.”

Superheroes designed by little girls

by Cory Doctorow

Alex Law's "little girls R better at designing heroes than you" is a great, occasionally updated Tumblr that features illustrations of superheroes based on the hero costumes little girls have made for themselves.

Kids are more impressionable than you, but kids can also be less restricted by cultural gender norms than you. Kids are more creative than you, and they're better at making superheroes than you.

This is a mini art project where I draw superheroes based on the costumes worn by little girls.

TV: Newswire: Wendell Pierce tried to make a Wire prequel with Samuel L. Jackson

by Sean O'Neal
billtron

@allen and @nikki, remember when we went to that play featuring "Acting Commissioner William Rawls," "State Senator Clay Davis," and "Vada Sultenfuss" at the Public Theater?

As Attorney General Eric Holder once demonstrated, not even wielding the full power of the Department of Justice will get you more of The Wire—nor, indeed, will wielding a big-ass dick, as Wendell Pierce recently revealed. The erstwhile Bunk took to Twitter last night to discuss his frustrated attempt to launch a Wire prequel film, one he would have produced himself and that would have starred Samuel L. Jackson, so as to confirm it as a real movie. “I had Samuel Jackson playing the kingpin running the Towers, when Stringer & Barksdale started a war and took over,” Pierce said of the “prequel that introduces you to the world of the series,” in addition to the ongoing prequel—and sequel—that is the city of Baltimore.

Still, don’t expect Wendell Pierce to follow in Zach Braff’s footsteps by launching a Kickstarter (or by doing anything else Zach Braff ...

Boo, Fuckin, Hoo This has to be the whiniest Tumblr I have ever read. You asked if Dartmouth has heard the message #Realtalk. Have you heard the message of #Realtalk? The messages is a group of students who felt that being queer female people of color entitled them to disrupt a cherished moment for prospies. You may not have heard our own message, but soon #Realtalk and Dean "Useless a graverobber in a crematorium" Johnson will hear Phil Hanlon's: "Get The Fuck Out of Dartmouth"

The words speak for themselves how individuals on this campus are treated on the daily.  Sorry sir or madam, but I will NOT GET THE FUCK OUT.  I say to you in the most polite way possible, I feel really sorry for you that you have been raised to direct so much hate, ignorance, and intolerance.  It is a sad world we live in when people feel entitled to go to an institution.

What The Internet Was Made For: Website Finds Picture Of A Person Pointing At Your Current Cursor Location

pointer-pointer.jpgPointerpointer is a website that finds a picture of someone pointing to the current location of your mouse cursor. Apparently the site has existed for awhile but my mom has just now let me start surfing the internet unsupervised so I have a lot of catching up to do. A friend told me there are even websites out there dedicated to nothing but pictures of naked women. Yowzers! Thanks to Bert, who just pointed at me and yelled, "That man stole my wallet!" Not cool, bro.

Discussing Dartmouth hate speech fallout with Jeff Sharlet at...

billtron

Apparently one woman of color returned to her living suite the day after the protest, in which she didn't participate, by the way, and her roommates told her they weren't comfortable living with her and asked her to leave. She has moved off campus and is considering withdrawing. Queer students are reporting dressing as preppy as possible to avoid harassment on campus. This is nasty.

To the 17s

by realtalkdartmouth

Dear Prospective Dartmouth student,

My name is Karolina and I am one of the protesters who disrupted the Dimensions Show on Friday, April 19th.  Some have blamed us for trying to harm Dartmouth, but I am proud of having stood in front of you precisely because I am trying to make Dartmouth a better place for you and me.

The protest on Friday was a culmination of events that have been heating up the campus for the past year and more. Dartmouth, like many similar institutions, has many faces. During Dimensions, we put on a happy mask and pretend that we are a loving community where everyone feels welcome at all times. For many of you, Dartmouth will, indeed, offer a supportive community, but most of you will also have to fight to belong, and question your ideas and beliefs. We wanted you to know about the challenges ahead, and have a chance to get ready before you arrive on campus in August. If you do decide to arrive, we will be hoping to watch you grow with us in the process of bringing about change.

Attempting to engage in a real conversation about the multi-faceted nature of the Dartmouth experience, a group of current Dartmouth students reached out to the prospective students on Wednesday and Thursday prior to Dimensions. Our efforts in reaching out to you were boycotted during the Dimensions weekend, however. We were well aware that attempts to speak truth on campus are controversial and often socially punished, but we did not expect to be systematically silenced.

We were forced to seek alternative means of speaking truth about issues of structural oppression and anonymous bullying at Dartmouth. The problems that are certainly not unique to Dartmouth have so far not been addressed adequately by the Dartmouth administration, and continue to be ignored and overlooked by the student body. Incidents of racism, sexism, homophobia, classism and ableism have been marked by inaction. Similarly, none of these issues were given space during the official programming of the Dimensions weekend.

Because we believe that you should not be fooled into imagining Dartmouth as an ideal community without issues to be solved, and because all our peaceful efforts to speak up were boycotted, we resorted to radical means of sharing the truth.  In the aftermath of the dramatic events in Boston, however, the community’s tolerance for chaos might have been challenged, and we understand that this might have been traumatic for you as well. I personally apologize for any harm or distress our action has caused you. Despite all that, we hope that our action inspires you to join us in the fight for a better Dartmouth.

Should you find yourself in need of assistance or advice, there are many resources available to you at Dartmouth and beyond. Please find a list of resources available to you attached to this message, and don’t hesitate to use them. I will also welcome any of your questions and/or comments to my personal email address. Please feel free to contact me at Karolina.Krelinova.14@Dartmouth.edu.

Sincerely,

Karolina Krelinova ‘14

Click through for a photo of the protestors. The woman in front was in one section of my Sense and Surveillance in the 21st Century class, and the photographer was in my other section of the same class.

““It was definitely very off-putting,” she said. “I had just come from the Bay and I was like, ‘Love Dartmouth! This is so great.’ The way in which the protest was presented was very surprising.”
The demonstration prompted Caswell to turn to current students with questions about contentious debates on campus.
“I feel like I gained a better perspective on those issues when people weren’t yelling at me,” Caswell said. “I think it was good that those issues were brought to light because I don’t think I would have talked or asked about those problems. I gained more of a holistic perspective. [The protest] definitely wasn’t the best way to approach that.””

"Saturday night at Town Hall in New York, the Nor’easters of Northeastern University in Boston..."

billtron

My brother was the music consultant for Pitch-Perfect, the music producer for The Sing-Off, and a judge for this ICCA competition.

“Saturday night at Town Hall in New York, the Nor’easters of Northeastern University in Boston were crowned national champions at the International Competition of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), the entirely real battle dramatized in last summer’s surprise hit Pitch Perfect. On the same night, the organizers announced from the stage that 19 Entertainment, which produces American Idol, was creating a reality series following the groups through the competition. And NBC has announced that it’s bringing back The Sing-Off, its a cappella series that was previously believed to be dead. Thus, the Saturday night competition took place while this style of music is having a bit of a moment, from which its advocates didn’t shy away — “This is the real Pitch Perfect,” went the on-stage introduction. You should know, though, that there is a big lie surrounding college a cappella.”

corporate job placement moocs?

billtron

fuck this, fuck you

i work in higher ed IT and there’s this “disruptive technology” thing going on called moocs (massive open online courses). i’m inundated with daily speculation about how moocs will dramatically change education as we know it and speculation about the various schemes for monetizing the courses.

but this thought just occurred to me:

what if… companies, as part of their recruitment and hiring processes, created moocs that you paid to (optionally?) take as part of the application process. applicants pay to earn mooc badges in order to be taken seriously for positions.

the companies earn a profit from your interest as a candidate, and you demonstrate skills/abilities to increase your viability/visibility.

this is heavily weighted toward the company’s interests, and could (would) become problematic pretty quickly for a variety of reasons, but it occurred to me that… given the financial upside for companies… it could happen.

and i just realized i’ve become a part of the speculation! *sigh*

Food is good and all that but YOU REALLY FUCKING NEED WATER. I always drink one glass of water before each meal and another glass right after. Shit, that’s almost all the water you need in a day.

Feeling tired? Got a headache? Nauseous? Fuck those Rx commercials with their crazy ass side effects, drinking more water is the cheapest way to feel better. I drink mine straight but if you’re fancy as fuck then toss in some lemon, mint leaves, lime, cucumber, lemongrass. I don’t give a good goddamn, JUST DRINK IT.

Ornette Coleman’s White House Band

by Erik Loomis

Ornette Coleman’s 1980 attempt to put together an all-white cover band of his own songs in order to create an audience for his music, since white people were more willing to listen to white musicians than black musicians is interesting, odd, and a little sad.
