Physicists Create "Urine Black Holes" To Solve the Splashback Problem

by Jennifer Ouellette on Gizmodo, shared by Jennifer Ouellette to io9

Good news for khaki-clad men plagued by speckled staining of their trousers from urine splash back: physicists may have found the optimal splash-suppressing design for a urinal insert, thereby creating a “urine black hole.” Urine gets in, but it can’t get back out.

City of Boston to Start Giving Letter Grades to Restaurants

by Marc
A food safety grading system that is used in other cities around the country is going to be set up in Boston.

The Boston Globe is reporting that dining spots around the city will start receiving letter grades (A, B, or C) based on health inspections for the restaurants, with the grades initially being posted online only, though if all goes well, the grades will ultimately be posted in windows of eateries much like in New York City and other places. The article says that a low grade for a dining spot (presumably a "C") would result in having inspectors recheck the place within 30 days, and that the grade would be adjusted upward if the inspection goes well; if fixes have not been made, the grade would remain as is until the next routine inspection. (Typically, inspections are done at least once a year.)

Information on the existing grading system for New York City can be found here.

Crocodile-buffalo hybrid photographed in Thailand! (And Egyptian demon seen in Greece!)

by David Pescovitz
Christopher.kantos

wha. what.

buffalo-crocodile-570x760

This creepy crocodile-buffalo hybrid turned up in High Rock, Thailand this month. The beast bears a striking resemblance to the half-aquatic, half-terrestrial Hindu god Makara, and is now on display in the village! According to Mysterious Universe, the creature may actually be a calf with a skin disorder. Sure it is....

Related, off the west coast of Greece, tourist Harvey Robertson snapped the following photo of this bizarre crocodile-hippo-dolphin that could be the earthly incarnation of the Egyptian demon Ammit, seen in illustration below!

Easy Pi

by Greg Ross

Here’s a simple algorithm that Yoshiaki Tamura and Yasumasa Kanada used to calculate π to 16 million places. It’s based on Gauss’ study of the arithmetic-geometric mean of two numbers. “Instead of using an infinite sum or product, the calculation goes round and round in a loop,” writes David Wells in The Penguin Dictionary of Curious and Interesting Numbers. “It has the amazing property that the number of correct digits approximately doubles with each circuit of the loop.” Start with these values:

\mathrm{A}=1
\mathrm{X}=1
\mathrm{B}=1/\sqrt{2}
\mathrm{C}=1/4

Then follow these instructions:

\textrm{Let}\:  \mathrm{Y}=\mathrm{A}

\textrm{Let}\:  \mathrm{A}=\displaystyle\frac{\mathrm{A}+\mathrm{B}}{2}

\textrm{Let}\:  \mathrm{B}=\sqrt{\mathrm{BY}}

\textrm{Let}\:  \mathrm{C}=\mathrm{C}-\mathrm{X}(\mathrm{A}-\mathrm{Y})^{2}

\textrm{Let}\:  \mathrm{X}=2\mathrm{X}

\textrm{PRINT}\: \displaystyle\frac{\left ( {\mathrm{A}+\mathrm{B}} \right )^{2}}{{4\mathrm{C}}}

The last instruction prints the first approximation to π; then you loop up to the top and run through the instructions again.

Running through the loop just three times gives an approximation to π that’s already correct to 5 decimal places:

Loop 1: 2.9142135
Loop 2: 3.1405797
Loop 3: 3.1415928

And running the loop a mere 19 times gives π correct to more than 1 million decimal places.

Commie bus stops were awesome

by Rob Beschizza

41hxxm4qNKL

Wired has a nice article up today about bus stops built in the Soviet Union, as photographed by Chris Herwig. Some of them look beautiful, some of them look like dead robots, and some look positively dangerous to be under.

Photographer Christopher Herwig first discovered the unusual architecture of Soviet-era bus stops during a 2002 long-distance bike ride from London to St. Petersburg. Challenging himself to take one good photograph every hour, Herwig began to notice surprisingly designed bus stops on otherwise deserted stretches of road. Twelve years later, Herwig had covered more than 18,000 miles in 14 countries of the former Soviet Union, traveling by car, bike, bus and taxi to hunt down and document these bus stops.

The local bus stop proved to be fertile ground for local artistic experimentation in the Soviet period, and was built seemingly without design restrictions or budgetary concerns. The result is an astonishing variety of styles and types across the region, from the strictest Brutalism to exuberant whimsy.

The book, Soviet Bus Stops, is available from Amazon and elsewhere.

I Love These Goddamn Stock Video Baboons and So Will You

by Andy Cush on Gawker, shared by Samer Kalaf to Deadspin

A solid meme for a Friday afternoon: Stock footage of baboons doing human things, paired with silly one-liner captions. They talk on the phone, they throw their computers, they gaze dewy-eyed into the distance and softly smack their lips in resignation. I love these goddamn baboons, and I can’t wait to share them with you.

Infamous Kirk vs Gorn scene made funnier with squeaky rubber suit sound f/x

by Mark Frauenfelder

The epic fist fight between Captain Kirk and a man in a lizard suit was a low water mark for Star Trek. Mario Wienerroither made it even worse (and therefore much better) by removing the music and adding squeaky rubber suit sound effects.
