Silicon Valley Made the Best Apple Maps Joke

by Kate Knibbs on Gizmodo, shared by Annalee Newitz to io9

Last night’s Silicon Valley is called “Homicide,” and it’s a reference to a fictional energy drink, not intentional killing. But the episode also contains a killer joke about the worst tech products in recent history.

Xinh Xinh in Chinatown Is Closing; May Open in New Location

by Marc
Christopher.kantos

This is terrible news. Spicy Pho is top 3 things in chinatown.

A highly-rated Vietnamese restaurant in Boston's Chinatown that is known in part as being an industry favorite is shutting down, and it looks like its closure stems from a conflict with the landlord.

Eater Boston is reporting that Xinh Xinh is saying farewell to its home on Beach Street on May 26, saying in a Facebook note that "Due to irreconcilable differences with the landlord, we have been forced to move out of our current location in Chinatown and relocate." The note also thanks its customers for their support, patronage, and friendship over the years, and tells people to stay tuned for an announcement of a new location for the eatery.

Xinh Xinh, which has been in business for approximately a decade, offers authentic Vietnamese fare at reasonable prices and has received high marks for its food over the years. One restaurant critic--MC Slim JB--once said in an article for the now-defunct Boston Phoenix, "Xinh Xinh delivers my favorite Vietnamese-restaurant experience in town."

The address for Xinh Xinh is 7 Beach Street, Boston, MA, 02111.

Recipe: Grilled Cheese Breakfast Sandwich — Breakfast Recipes from The Kitchn

by Jerry James Stone

this sandwich is super not practical.

Let's face it, the grilled cheese is already a super indulgent sandwich. There's no need to pile on a bunch of sweet potato fries in between all of that melted cheddar and jack cheese. But I did it anyway. Oh, and I also added a fried egg. Just because I could.

Watermelon-Eating Techniques Of Large Animals, Ranked

by Kevin Draper on The Concourse, shared by Rob Harvilla to Deadspin

Feeding whole watermelons to large animals and uploading the resulting videos to YouTube is a thing that people do, and it is one of the best uses of the internet. It’s pretty exciting to watch these beasts lay waste to a 10-pound piece of fruit like it’s a grape or something. So here are some videos of large animals eating watermelons, ranked in descending order based on the efficacy and entertainment value of their technique.

The backwards bike will break your brain

by Jason Kottke
Christopher.kantos

This is pretty fascinating

Do you think you could ride a bicycle that steers backwards...aka it turns left when you turn right and vice versa? It sounds easy but years of normal bike riding experience makes it almost impossible. Destin Sandlin of Smarter Everyday taught himself how to ride the backwards-steering bike; it took months. Then he tried riding a normal bicycle again...

Loved this video...great stuff. (via ★interesting)

Dreams Do Come True: Ben & Jerry’s Beer

by DIA

5ff61f89_New-Belgium-and-Ben-_-Jerry_s-Beer.xxxlarge
We’ve seen beer and wine flavored ice cream but now Ben & Jerry’s and New Belgium Brewing Co. are making our dreams come true with ice cream flavored beer. The duo plans to release their Salted Caramel Brownie Brown Ale in the fall. While it may sound extreme, the brewing industry is no stranger to adding chocolate flavors to beer. Dogfish Head Theobroma and Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock are two examples of beers that weren’t afraid to sweeten the mix.

Both New Belgium and Ben & Jerry’s have a history of social activism and are passionate about quality, so we know this beer will combine the best of both worlds. No more having to choose between beer and ice cream (not that we ever really do)! We plan to be the first in line when Ben & Jerry’s Salted Caramel Brownie Brown Ale hits the shelves this fall. We can all scream (or cheer) for this ice cream beer. Just don’t forget that it’s located in the liquor aisle—not the frozen dessert section!

The making of NHL '94

by Jason Kottke

NHL 94

Blake Harris, the author of Console Wars, has written a piece on how NHL '94 came to be. For those unaware, NHL '94 is one of the greatest sports video games ever created. This is the sort of attention to detail that made it so great:

For example, it could emulate the ambience of a game day NHL arena by including the proper organ music. The problem, though, was that each team's organist played different songs. 'That's not a problem, actually,' explained Dieter Ruehle, the organist for the San Jose Sharks (and previously for the Los Angeles Kings), 'I can do that.' True to his word, Ruehle provided EA with organ music for every team; and he didn't just provide all of their songs, but also noted which music was blasted during power plays, which tunes were used to celebrate goals, and all the other inside info needed to make each arena feel like home. Ruehle was so diligent about getting it right and capturing that home crowd essence, that during a recording session at EA's sound studio he asked:

'The woman who plays the organ for the Washington Capitals has arthritis; would you like me to play the songs how they are meant to be played, or the way that she plays them because of her condition?'

'Definitely the way she plays it!' Brook answered, after a laugh.

I think I might have to bust out the Genesis this week. Anyone wanna come over?
