“It disturbed me how some critics would talk about the loss of property — which is really saying white-owned property — but not the loss of life. Do the Right Thing was a litmus test. If in a review, a critic discussed how Sal’s Famous was burned down but didn’t mention anything about Radio Raheem getting killed, it seemed obvious that he or she valued white-owned property more than the life of this young black hoodlum. To me, loss of life outweighs loss of property. You can rebuild a building. I mean, they’re rebuilding New Orleans now but the people that died there are never coming back.”

ThePrettiestOne

I get such LOOKS when I say I have problems getting into Dune because Paul Atreides just strikes me as a completely Mary Sue.

“I genuinely wish that everyone would delete the word “Mary Sue” from their vocabulary. In its original, fanfic usage, it described a character who was, yes, usually female, but whose greatest crime was not perfection: it was twisting the story. A Mary Sue in that sense literally walks into someone else’s world and makes everything about her. Flash forward to the modern day and it’s a rare female protagonist who doesn’t get accused of being a Mary Sue, and hence worthless. Here’s the thing: she can’t distort the story if the story already belongs to her. The protagonist, regardless of gender, is awesome and interesting and has a milkshake that brings all the boys, girls, or genderfluid space pirates to the yard, because that’s why they’re the star of the story. So calling female protagonists “Mary Sue” is sexist, belittling, and reduces them in a way that is very rarely applied to their male counterparts—even when those male counterparts are just as guilty of being a little too perfect to be real.”

sean-kkendrick:

For we will be wicked and we will be fair
And they'll call us such names, and we really won't care,
So go, tell your Wendys, your Susans, your Janes,
There's a place they can go if they're tired of chains,
And our roads may be golden, or broken, or lost,
But we'll walk on them willingly, knowing the cost -
We won't take our place on the shelves.
It's better to fly and it's better to die
Say the wicked girls saving ourselves.

In memory of Gizzy Fowler, the 10th trans woman of color murdered in the U.S. in 2014

In memory of Gizzy Fowler, the 10th trans woman of color murdered in the U.S. in 2014:

gaywrites:

Earlier this week, Gizzy Fowler, a trans woman of color, was found dead in a Nashville suburb. She’s the 10th trans woman of color — and the 11th trans woman in total — known to have been killed in the United States this year, according to the New York City Anti-Violence Project.

"There is an undeniable epidemic of fatal violence against transgender and gender non-confirming women, specifically transgender women of color in the United States — these ten lives cut short cannot be ignored" said Osman Ahmed, The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) Research and Education Coordinator at the New York City Anti-Violence Project. “We need immediate action on a national level to address the alarming violence against transgender women in the United States.”

With the Transgender Day of Remembrance (11/20) occurring only days after Gizzy’s murder, it is more urgent than ever that we recognize and demand an end to the epidemic of violence against all trans people, recognizing that trans women of color bear the brunt of the attacks. My heart is with Gizzy’s family and friends during this tragic time.

Diego Ibanez, the guy who threw fake blood yesterday on NYC Commissioner Bratton, is facing 225 years for 9 counts of assault on an “officer of the peace”. And Officer Darren Wilson walks free for murdering an unarmed black boy. This is the society we live in and some of y’all wanna stay complacent as fuck. 225 years for throwing red paint. 0 years for taking the life of a boy who was jaywalking.

The older I get, the wronger the establishment is.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: This week, NYPD cop Pedro Serrano has been testifying about the unfair targeting of Blacks and Hispanics for New York’s Stop and Frisk. To support his case, Serrano unveiled a video recording of superior ordering him to stop and frisk Black and Latino males between the ages of 14 and 21. This cop is very, very brave.

Good cops don’t turn a blind eye to the corruption and racism being practiced by their fellow officers.

Brave man.  I hope to all the gods he isn’t made to pay for it.

The Real Ferguson: A Note on What Actually Happened the Night of the Grand Jury Announcement

iwriteaboutfeminism:

While agitators burned several buildings and cars last night in Ferguson and Dellwood, and while several businesses were looted, the police and the national guard did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to stop them. This is EXACTLY the image they wanted to be splashed over newspaper headlines this morning. They allowed this to happen in order to justify their heavy use of force and brutality.

The agitators were NOT regular protesters. The actions were NOT caused by a large group of people. This IN NO WAY matches or reflects on the consistently peaceful, organized protesters who have been active in Ferguson the last 108 days.

I have no idea who these agitators were, but I’m guessing they weren’t from Ferguson. Why would you burn businesses that you rely on in your own town?

However, if the agitators were black, the anger of the people who did these destructive things is valid. I don’t support what they did, but I understand that the deep hurt behind it at the continued and brutal injustice they face every day.

Or, it could easily have been group of white people who enjoy watching thing burn, who have no respect for this majority-black community, wanting to make the protesters look bad.

My point: The physical damage to property is NOT the story.

Police used tear gas on protesters in the streets of Ferguson, inside a coffee shop where protesters were meeting in Shaw, and in at least three designated save spaces. Among those gassed were children and observers from Amnesty International.

THE STORY: Darren Wilson got away with murdering an unarmed black teenager in cold blood, and police tear gassed peaceful protesters on the street, in a private business, and in pre-designated save spaces.

But how much of the REAL story do you expect to see covered in mainstream media? As from the very beginning, you’re best bet is to listen to the protesters themselves. They have been speaking truth and disproving lies from the police and media for the last 108 days. They are on a mission for justice, and we should all be following their lead.

Powerful Broken Arch Cover of ‘The New Yorker’ by Illustrator Bob Staake In Response to Unrest in Ferguson, Missouri

by Scott Beale

The New Yorker

The December 8, 2014 issue of The New Yorker features a powerful “Broken Arch” cover illustration by Bob Staake in response to the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri.

“I wanted to comment on the tragic rift that we’re witnessing,” Bob Staake says about his cover for the December 8 issue, arriving next week. “I lived in St. Louis for seventeen years before moving to Massachusetts, so watching the news right now breaks my heart. At first glance, one might see a representation of the Gateway Arch as split and divided, but my hope is that the events in Ferguson will provide a bridge and an opportunity for the city, and also for the country, to learn and come together.”

Back in 2008 Staake created the iconic “Reflection” cover illustration of The New Yorker after President Obama was elected to office.

When you think of the US space program, spaceships and satellites may be the first thing that comes to mind, but there are plenty of mundane items that we take for granted that we have thanks to NASA and its contractors. Here are just a few examples of how NASA has improved life on Earth.

“It’s funny, the stereotypes we given. Lazy, as if we ain’t build an entire country on our backs. Thieves, as if we wasn’t stolen from our home. Hateful, as if we was the ones that murder for dark skin. Selfish, as if we took over another people’s country and claimed they land as our own.
