I wonder how many people voted for Trump due to that ol’ fantasy of a poor person catching the eye of a generous billionaire who helps them escape poverty and gives them a comfortable life. I mean, we’ve all wished for it in some vague way when we struggle… but most of us know it’s just that: a fantasy. But I wonder how many clung to that fantasy in the form of Trump and voted for his ass thinking it was their Billionaire Bailing Me PERSONALLY Out Of My Struggle fantasy come to life.

This is not a post pitying them or anything. They’re getting fucked over and sure maybe that’s sad but they made sure the rest of us were fucked over too so I have no fucking sympathy for these undercooked rotten potatoes.

Make This Simple Miso Marinade for All of Your Meaty Needs

by Claire Lower on Skillet, shared by Claire Lower to Lifehacker

the fuck would I want to make a steak taste like fish?

The more I use miso, the more I become convinced that other flavoring agents are simply not needed. Not only does it render soups, dips, and desserts totally addictive, but it makes one heck of a delicious marinade.

Chinese Airline’s New Haute Couture Uniforms Puts Other Airlines To Shame

by Andrius
ThePrettiestOne

so... pretty...

One airline in China has just elevated their dress code to new heights by providing their crew members with stylish haute couture uniforms that seem to be taken straight out of a fashion magazine cover.

Hainan Airlines have collaborated with designer Laurence Xu who introduced the new attire at the Paris Couture Week. Inspired by the ‘Cheongsam’, a traditional Chinese dress, the uniform features a blend between the modern Western-style fashion trends and traditional Chinese art elements like cloud drawings, waves and even the Chinese mythical bird – the Roc.

“The cooperation between Hainan Airlines and Lawrence Xu is industry leading. We are not only creating a new uniform but also showing the internationalized image of our airline. Especially on international routes, we would like to let passengers know that China is modern and trendy,” said Xu Fei, brand director of Hainan Airlines.

Men’s version of the uniform is a bit less extravagant and Western-looking, with double-breasted overcoats and smaller elements of the traditional Chinese culture.

John Dies at the End Prize Pack Sweepstakes!

by Sweepstakes

John Dies at the End series by David Wong

David Wong’s third John Dies at the End book, What the Hell Did I Just Read, is available October 3rd from St. Martin’s Press—but we want to send one lucky reader a galley copy of it, along with copies of the two other books in the series, John Dies at the End and This Book is Full of Spiders, and a t-shirt featuring the cover art from What the Hell Did I Just Read!

It’s the story “They” don’t want you to read. Though, to be fair, “They” are probably right about this one. To quote the Bible, “Learning the truth can be like loosening a necktie, only to realize it was the only thing keeping your head attached.” No, don’t put the book back on the shelf—it is now your duty to purchase it to prevent others from reading it. Yes, it works with e-books, too, I don’t have time to explain how.

While investigating a fairly straightforward case of a shape-shifting interdimensional child predator, Dave, John and Amy realized there might actually be something weird going on. Together, they navigate a diabolically convoluted maze of illusions, lies, and their own incompetence in an attempt to uncover a terrible truth they—like you—would be better off not knowing.

Your first impulse will be to think that a story this gruesome—and, to be frank, stupid—cannot possibly be true. That is precisely the reaction “they” are hoping for.

John Dies at the End‘s “smart take on fear manages to tap into readers’ existential dread on one page, then have them laughing the next” (Publishers Weekly) and This Book is Full of Spiders was “unlike any other book of the genre” (Washington Post). Now, New York Times bestselling author David Wong is back with What the Hell Did I Just Read, the third installment of this black-humored thriller series.

How to deal with being called out

chescaleigh:

  1. Don’t tone police. It is NOT your right to dictate how someone should react to their oppression.
  2. Don’t demand a detailed explanation. You’re basically asking the person to justify their call out. It’s exhausting, many resources are available, and often this is just a way to try and derail, start an argument, or discredit the other person.
  3. Don’t get defensive. A call out is not all about you as a person.
  4. Don’t take it personally. Calling out is not a personal attack. If someone calls you out, they’re trying to teach you something. Calling out is a way for people to educate others on how systems of oppression operate on a day to day, individual level.
  5. Don’t attack the person who’s calling you out. That’s just fucked up.
  6. Don’t assume the person calling you out is just “looking to get offended”. Nobody enjoys calling other people out. To call someone out, people often have to mentally prepare for serious repercussions. Calling someone out might mean starting an argument, during which many people will side with the oppressor by default (especially if you’re privileged over the person calling you out).
  7. Understand that being oppressive is not the same as being offensive or hurting feelings. The damage you’re perpetuating is part of a larger system of oppression.
  8. Realize that your intent is irrelevant when it comes to whether you were oppressive or not.
  9. Recognize the power dynamics that are in place between you and the person calling you out.
  10. Understand intersectionality. IE: Just because you are oppressed by classism, doesn’t mean you lack male privilege.
  11. Know that being privileged means being oppressive, but you can work to reduce the ways that you are oppressive.
  12. LISTEN.
  13. Genuinely apologize.
  14. Work on oppression reduction and being the best ally you can be. The point of calling you out is to draw your attention to how you’re being oppressive, so that you can work to change it. If you made an oppressive joke, there’s probably oppressive thoughts in place (conscious or not) that led you to think the joke was appropriate. Everyone has to unlearn the oppressive things they’ve absorbed from an oppressive society. We are all taught ways to keep marginalized people in their place, but the good thing is that we can identify these things in ourselves and change. And then we can start working on dismantling the kyriarchy, yeah!

Ethics director: 'Fairly explicit threat' from Preibus 'emblematic' of his White House interactions

by rss@dailykos.com (Hunter)
ThePrettiestOne

Because nothing says "no corruption here" like claiming ethics are "political"

Office of Government Ethics Director Walter Shaub announced his resignation from the post last week, citing an inability to accomplish anything more in the role under the Trump administration. Today he took to a Sunday show to elaborate. The network helpfully provided a clip of Reince Priebus opining during a January interview that Shaub "ought to be careful" in his Trump criticisms.

In an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” host George Stephanopoulos played a pre-inauguration clip of Priebus, the former head of the Republican National Committee now serving as Trump’s chief of staff.

“The head of the government ethics ought to be careful, because that person is becoming extremely political,” Priebus said in the clip. His comment was in response to Shaub’s statement days earlier that Trump’s ethics arrangement regarding his massive business empire was “meaningless from a conflicts of interest perspective.”

Shaub acknowledged he saw the January statement as a "fairly explicit threat" from Priebus.

“I think the fairly explicit threat from Reince Priebus during that show really is emblematic of how the interactions with the White House have been since the beginning of this administration,” said Shaub, who has accepted a position with the Campaign Legal Center as senior direct of ethics.

This should serve as another reminder that it is not Donald Trump eroding or tossing aside ethics restrictions that were considered sacrosanct during previous administrations. Trump may have wanted to do it, but it was his surrounding staff that both made sure it happened and have launched regular attacks on both the press and on the federal government's own ethics watchdogs in response to any who have exposed the behavior.

This was the head of the Republican National Committee itself going on television to dispense these threats to the Office of Government Ethics director, a mere two days after Trump announced Priebus would be his new Chief of Staff. Trump may have been the one to decide he'd be keeping his business empire and would be using the presidency to boost its revenues, but it was the entire Republican leadership, from committee heads to lawmakers, that continue to back the gutting of rules that stood in his way.

Woman Surprised To See Her Puppy Drag Its New Blanket Outside, But Then She Sees This

by Elizabeth
ThePrettiestOne

Dogs are the best people.
Sorry, cats, it's just true.

Meet Lana, a rescue puppy who knows a thing or two about friendship and being generous. Rescued from the streets of Brazil, the 8-month-old doggie has a loving owner, but clearly still remembers what it’s like to be a stray. So, when she saw a homeless dog on a chilly night, she dragged her blanket to share it with him.

“I thought, ‘How beautiful what she did for her friend,'” Suelen Schaumloeffel, the woman who adopted Lana, tells The Dodo. “My best four-legged friend reminded me of something so important: generosity!”

“She is the nicest little dog I’ve ever met,” Schaumloeffel says. “We forget sometimes the difference we can make in someone’s life. She reminded me of this.”

The woman has been leaving food and water for the stray dog and thinks that’s what Lana would want her to do. Unfortunately, the homeless pooch still runs away every time she tries to approach him. Still, Schaumloeffel hopes that one day they can help the doggie find a home.

The Truth About Cat Allergies

by Nick Douglas
ThePrettiestOne

So, so glad I'm not allergic to cats, considering the fact that the things I am allergic to seem to include air, and my own sweat.
(Slightly kidding on that first one, not kidding at all on the second.)

Cat allergies, like sexuality, run on a spectrum. If you’re only slightly allergic, you might be ready to bear it, if you can find a cat that will meet you halfway. While there’s no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic cat, some breeds are easier on the sinuses than others. Unfortunately most online advice is…

I think this should have a hell of a lot more notes on it than it does. This is what good news looks like folk, and the continent of Africa surely deserves a shed load of it.

Today (April 7th) is Remembrance Day for the Rwandan genocide. While Rwanda still faces challenges, their recovery has been incredible. They now have the highest percentage of women in parliament around the world (one of only two countries to have over 50% women), their gross national income has risen each year, and life expectancy has risen from  48 in 1990 to 65 in 2013.
