Believe me, it's not any better if you're working in government.

thattallnerdybean:

dvadad:

cashier: sorry for your wait. we’re short-staffed today

millennial: oh that’s ok no worries :)

 baby boomer:

But listen that’s the thing.

We are short staffed almost 97% of the time at my retail job. Because corporate has figured out you can overwork 4 people at minimum wage instead of paying for the 8 people you should probably have to be on the clock.

Baby boomers grew up with stores that were adequately staffed, with workers who most likely had weeks of training for their jobs as opposed to the 1-2 shadow shift training we get now. Also those workers most likely were able to be full time if they wanted. Now retail, except for management positions, is mostly made up of part time workers, because you don’t have to give them benefits. So you have a workforce of perpetually underpaid, overwhelmed, undertrained people trying to do their best all while dealing with an entire generation of people who refuse to acknowledge that the system has changed and the average retail worker has NO control over that change and is being taken advantage of.

Like we got our customer surveys back, and almost every single one mentioned that they couldn’t find someone to help them or we needed more people on register because it was TOO SLOW, but what did management tell us instead of scheduling more people? We need to be quicker on register and call for backup if necessary. Which makes no sense because we can’t call for backup THAT ISN’T THERE.

A lesbian couple gets a shocking surprise one day when God (played by Laverne Cox) shows up at their door. Upset at how humans had turned her message of love and acceptance into a message of hate and discrimination, she decides it’s time to send Jesus back to earth and wants the lesbian couple to raise Jesus. Hilarity ensues.

No need for homophobic or transphobic jokes when you can have exchanges like
“Ma'am your son turned the water fountain into wine again and got all the other students drunk”
“Jesus Christ.”
“….. I’m not sure if that’s suppose to be you responding to me or you requesting to speak to him.”

Also jokes about infinity-“Ask your mom”.

Kid: “Mom, can I sleep over at John’s place?”

Mom #1: “Oh, I don’t know, sweetie. Ask your mom.”

Kid: “Mom, can I sleep over at John’s?”

Mom #2: “I don’t know, have you asked your mom already?”

Kid praying: “Mom, can I sleep over at John’s place?”

God: “Have you asked your moms already?”

City Builds Tiny Village For Homeless Veterans With 50 Tiny Houses So They Could Live There For Free

by Stella
ThePrettiestOne

I'm dubious on the tiny house trend, but I am 100% behind free housing for veterans for life.

The Veterans Community Project in Kansas City is taking serious steps to improve the lives of America’s war heroes. Thanks to generous donations from community members, they’ve built the Veterans Village, a collection of small houses that homeless veterans can live in for free.

The village includes 50 individual homes, each one about the size of a studio apartment. Occupants are provided with food and necessities, as well as a sense of privacy, security, and stability. A nearby community centre, still under construction, will host classes and counseling aimed at helping veterans readjust to their lives and cope with trauma.

The VCP is made up of self-described “veterans helping veterans”, and has spearheaded many projects combatting homelessness and neglect in veteran communities. Though not the first of its kind in the US, the concept of ‘tiny homes’ does make the Veterans Village a unique and economically smart place of refuge.

They also come stocked with food and necessities, which veterans can have replenished as needed

Having their own space will give them a sense of privacy, security, and comfort, just like a real home

Each tiny house costs about $10,000 to produce, making the village space- and cost-effective

Human reactions to fear!

No, I’m not talking about screaming or freezing in one spot and pissing yourself. I’m talking about the weirder, more specific-to-only-humans fear reactions.

Like singing.

Idk how many of you have watched people play horror video games, but a surprising amount of people start narrating what’s going on in a sing-song voice.

Imagine being an alien, walking in a horrific, dark tunnel with these weird gangly creatures, you’re all scared out of your wits and then one of them starts fucking singing.

In a dark cave. While everyone’s terrified.

fandomsandfeminism:

Humans are a communal species that have banded together and cared for their sick, disabled, and elderly since before we were ever modern man. Resources were shared even as skills specialized.

Capitalism isn’t natural. A community should not have members dying of starvation or exposure while there is an abundance of resources. That isn’t how it works. That isn’t how it’s supposed to work.

ok so my roommates are anthropology students and their favorite example for debunking the ‘survival of the fittest’ bs is shanidar 1. (x, x, x)

shanidar 1 is a neanderthal who, at a pretty young age, was hit in the head hard enough to blind him. this also led to that side of his brain shutting down and withering his right arm, and possibly crippling his entire right side. not only that but his skeleton also shows that at some point, he broke a bone in his foot and, in addition to the other factors, resulted in a noticeable limp. there are some sources which say he likely had degenerative diseases. (arthritis was really common in neanderthals)

going off of widespread ideas of “”primitive”” (no longer the word used in anthropology/academia to describe early-modern humans) societies, shanidar probably died really young, deliberately abandoned or killed. i mean, he was severely crippled, blind, etc., he couldn’t contribute anything, he would have been a “”burden to society””, right?

except he lived to be between 40 and 50 years old. (about ~80 in human years)

this means that his social group had to have taken care of him for a minimum of two or three decades without his ‘contributing’ anything significant to the group. this discovery (and Shanidar III’s) was huge because it basically proves that early humans had a concept of hospice. early modern humans cared for the sick and the elderly, greatly extending their lifespan, simply because they cared

tl;dr: the concept of someone needing to be ‘’useful’’ or ‘’’productive’’’ in society in order to be valued and cared for is a very modern concept and our quasi-predecessors would be ashamed

Also, Shanidar I was buried with flowers. They cared about him after he was dead, too.

lagonegirl: Eyricka Morgan, 26, was a black transgender woman....

lagonegirl:

Eyricka Morgan, 26, was a black transgender woman. She was a student at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She was an activist.

Transgender women of color experience disproportionate levels of hate violence compared to other members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, facing challenges and struggles that are uniquely framed by the intersecting nature of their marginalized identity framework.

Nettles’ friends spoke up against this mistreatment. After Eyricka died, we, her friends, had two options: Speak up or remain silent. As cisgender allies we could choose to do our part to ensure Eyricka’s story was shared, or we could do nothing. But true allies are not absent when they are needed most.

http://www.avp.org/storage/documents/ncavp_transhvfactsheet.pdf

Many trans women of color are fighting just to live, and dream of stopping the onslaught of violence in their lives. Among LGBTQ communities, trans people are most susceptible to police violence; trans women in particular are most likely to be killed by hate violence homicides, according to the advocacy organization the Anti-Violence Project.

“Black trans women should never have to live in fear that today will be their last day,” Elle Hearns, a field coordinator at the LGBTQ advocacy organization Get Equal, told AlterNet. “It is a national emergency that we must pay attention to by taking action to support and sustain the lives of trans women who are under attack.”

Trans women of color need us all to listen to their stories when they are alive so that we are not grief-stricken when they are slain. We could all have fewer occasions to shed tears if we followed the lead of trans women of color in the fight to end trans antagonistic violence now. Eyricka, Tamara, Elisha, Shade, Amber, Kandis, Papi, Lamia, Ty, Yazmin, Taja, Penny, Kristina, Keyshia, London, Mercedes, India, K.C. and so many other trans women of color killed deserve more than silence. It takes self-reflection and determined effort to overcome complacency in a society that often treats those who defy rigid cultural norms — like gender nonconforming and transgender people — as unworthy of respect or safety, but it should not have to take a friend’s death to remind us to speak up.

A Florida man allegedly tried to burn down an Indian-owned store to “run the Arabs out of our country”

  • Police say a 64-year-old Florida resident attempted to burn down a Met Mart in Port St. Lucie after blaming his inability to purchase Tropicana orange pineapple juice on his belief the owners were Muslim, CNN reported.
  • In a Facebook post, St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara wrote that Richard Leslie Lloyd was arrested after rolling a dumpster in front of the store’s doors and lighting its contents on fire. After surrendering to deputies, Lloyd told them he was trying to “run the Arabs out of our country” and was angry at the owners “due to what they are doing in the Middle East,” according to the post. KEEP YOUR CAT INDOORS

ThePrettiestOne

You are, of course free to do as you like with your pet, but as for me and my house, we keep our cats inside.
(OK, we specifically keep Super ButtButt inside because she is capable of some REALLY bad decision-making. The boyfriend's cat has not expressed any interest whatsoever in going back outside since the day we rescued her off the street.

scalestails:

I feel like I have to talk about something to the public.

KEEP
YOUR
CAT
INDOORS

There is NO good reason… let me repeat that, NO GOOD REASON… to keep them outdoors, or even outdoor/indoors. Keep them inside, keep them supervised and restrained outside.

“But my cat HATES it inside! It keeps trying to escape… I mean really escape when someone opens a door!” Your cat is only unhappy inside because you don’t keep it happy. Play with the damn thing. Give it some cat towers, foraging treats, scratching posts, shelves to climb on, a window seat. This is all part of basic cat ownership.

“Well, my cat doesn’t kill anything. He can’t even catch a fly!” Your cat is killing wildlife. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that little bell is helping. Cats have been a major cause in the extinction… yes EXTINCTION of hundreds of bird, reptile, and mammal species. Wildlife rehabilitators spend the majority of their time cleaning up after cat owners. Cats don’t kill to eat. They kill for fun. They have no place in the wild. Their “prey” has no adaptation to deal with them, they should never have come into contact with them. They are NOT part of the ecosystem, they are NOT helping keep “pest species” down, they are NOT HELPFUL.
Here are some birds that have been driven to extinction mainly by cats.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guadalupe_Storm-petrel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephens_Island_Wren
http://www.wildlifebiology.com/Downloads/Article/92/En/185-195.PDF
“The feral cat Felis catus, introduced over 200 years ago, is linked with early continental extinctions of up to seven species of mammals, regional and insular of many more species of mammals and birds, and the failure of management programs attempting to reintroduce threatened native species to parts of their former ranges.”
Add to that list the 71 species of birds in Hawaii that are now gone, and the thousands of other at risk. It is estimated that nationwide, cats kill over a billion small animals and hundreds of million birds each year. THAT IS NOT OK. YOU ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THAT.

Your cat IS at risk of death if you let them unrestrained outdoors. Sit down and think… how many cats have you seen dead in the road? Hmm? That was someones pet. That’s the product of someone thinking “My cat is smart enough to avoid cars.” They are not. They get killed all the time. Millions are killed each year by cars.

“But my cat lives in a rural area! There are no cars to worry about.” What about disease? Parasites? Wildlife? Depending on where you live you HAVE to worry about foxes, raccoons, wolves, coyotes, bears, hawks… the list goes on.

Outdoor cats get in fights with other cats. This results in serious injury and sometimes death. You have no control over it.
Outdoor cats are at a huge risk for parasites like fleas, ticks, roundworms, tapeworms and HEARTWORMS. Heartworms are deadly. They are also likely to contract diseases like  rabies, feline leukemia, distemper and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).
Outdoor cats destroy wildlife and ecosystems.
Outdoor cats are poisoned, shot, and killed by sickos.
The life expectancy of an outdoor cat is five years. The life expectancy of an indoor cat is 17+.
There is a huge overpopulation problems with cats in the US. Millions of homeless cats are euthanized each year.
Exposure to pesticides, rodenticides and antifreeze kills thousands of outdoor cats each year. Cats are maimed and killed in traps set for furbearing animals.

http://www.icogitate.com/~tree/bad.cats.htm

So I repeat.

KEEP YOUR CATS INDOORS

Here are some great ways to keep your indoor cat happy and safe.

I can’t believe we’ve already found the best animal video of 2016.

That is too adorable. You can tell the mother cat actually does trust the dog just by her body language. Typically a mother will watch her kittens closely and be very protective of them, here she completely trusts the dog to play gentle with them. This is just too damn cute.

When he bops the kitten and looks up at Mom to make sure he didn’t overstep!

The dog is trying to make himself as non-threatening as possible!!

I love videos like this because they completely refute those assholes who say “Animals are just fancy machines with no emotional or mental depth.”

Privately run immigration detention is so violent that prisoners beg to be kept in solitary

mostlysignssomeportents:

With Obama’s federal government reducing the role of private prisons in the incarceration of Americans, companies like Corrections Corporation of America (now known as Corecivic) and GAO aggressively moved into providing detention facilities for people awaiting deportation, like the 2,000,000+ people deported under the Obama administrations.

These detention facilities were, if anything, even more cruel and inhumane than the private prisons that warehoused so many Americans. The Verge made FOIA requests to ICE for information on conditions in their privately contracted detention centers, and these documents reveal that under Obama, “life inside the facilities can be so dangerous and hostile that numerous detainees have voluntarily admitted themselves to solitary confinement just to seek refuge from the general population,” and the remaining solitary confinement cells were routinely used to punish inmates for minor infractions like “horseplay” and talking back to guards, a punishment visited indiscriminately against detainees with severe mental illness.

Solitary confinement is classed as a form of torture by the UN.

Donald Trump has reversed the Obama policy of preventing private companies from providing federal prisons. The share prices of GAO and Corecivic have increased significantly since the inauguration.

draconym: draconym: I think one of the funniest things I’ve accidentally taught my parrot is...

ThePrettiestOne

I admire parrots, because even though we are a garbage species, they work very hard at trying to understand us, and trying to make up better parrots.

draconym:

draconym:

I think one of the funniest things I’ve accidentally taught my parrot is yelling “WHAT?”

The best part is that if he says something weird and and someone else says “what???” he usually repeats what he just said.

Like just now, I was cooking in the kitchen and he heard me boiling water so he asked “you wanna noodle?” but I couldn’t quite hear him so I yelled “WHAT” and he repeated “you wanna noodle?”

Mostly he just likes yelling it, though.

Less funny things I’ve accidentally taught my parrot:

  • to make the smoke detector noise every time someone makes toast
  • to make gross eating noises at us when he wants us to share our food
  • to announce that he is about to poop just about every time he poops
  • to demand payment in the form of peanuts for every instance of good behavior
  • no seriously he says “I get a peanut” every single time and gets VERY MAD if not given a peanut
