The European Space Agency recently released a group of photos taken by astronaut Alexander Gerst showing the International Space Station at night. The only real contextual information provided is that "the six astronauts on the weightless research centre live by GMT, and generally sleep at the same time."

Gerst—so close to Geist!—thus took advantage of the downtime to produce some images that make the ISS look uninhabited, a dead mansion rolling through space.

This is perhaps what it would look like to arrive somewhere in the middle of night, hoping to say hello to your comrades, only to find that you've actually boarded the Mary Celeste.

The dimly lit corridors of this house of sleeping astronauts take on the atmosphere of film noir, as if this is secretly a crime scene, still flickering with the last lights of its drained batteries, and these are the first photos to be taken upon arrival.

Small details take on narrative suspense. Why was that cupboard door left open, its contents bare for all to see? And are those objects messily scattered about, as if a struggle has taken place, or is this just the normal state of things in zero-g?

Where is everyone? Imagine performing forensic crime-scene analysis in the absence of gravity, three-dimensionally reconstructing a moment of violence by tracking objects back along all of their possible trajectories; you would need holographic models of every legally admissible collision and variation.

In any case, to browse more of astronaut Gerst's collection, you can basically start at this image and click backward through the rest; one or two, unfortunately, feature other astronauts drifting around, perhaps staring down at the earth through the red eyes of insomnia, which ruins the illusion of this being a ruin, but the photos are still worth a glimpse.

Finally, proving that international scientific organizations have an active sense of humor, the photos were actually released on Halloween.

Like stunning x-rays from an alien world, Bruce Riley‘s resin paintings seem to be lit from within. His playful shapes and psychedelic colors blossom in suspended animation, humming with as much electrical energy as any other multicellular organism.

Riley describes his process as intuitive and organic, saying, “I’m not really trying to define any ideas, I’m just letting it flow.” Watching him work is certainly hypnotizing as fluorescent greens and ozone blues blossom and blend into each other. The paintings can be appreciated from afar as well as up close, each brimming with meditative detail.
“You’re always investigating,” Riley says of his process. “It’s not about an end result. [You're] trying to use techniques that you remember but also looking for things you’ve never seen before.”

Part of the beauty of Riley’s work is that it can be appreciated on various levels. Open to interpretation, one could call it the secret life of lava lamps . It could also be described with a narrative, a foray into extraterrestrial forensics. Or you could just take it as it is: the stream of conscious of a man who certainly knows his way around a paint brush. (via This Is Colossal)

Tattoos, historically, have been on the bodies of sailors and prisoners. It’s only in relatively recent years that they’ve entered mainstream society and lost some of their negative social stigma. Arkady Bronnikov collected photographs of tattooed Russian prisoners between the mid-1960s and mid-1980s. The amount he obtained was massive – 918 images worth –  thanks to his position in the government. As a senior expert in criminalistics at the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs for over 30 years, part of Bronnikov’s duties involved visiting correctional institutions of the Ural and Siberia regions. He interviewed, gathered information, and photographed convicts and their tattoos, which gradually helped him build this comprehensive archive.

The images were later acquired by FUEL, a London-based design group, in 2013. Some of the photographs and official police papers authored by Bronnikov from the Soviet period will be published by FUEL in two volumes, the first of which was just released. Now, they are part of a current exhibition titled FUEL present: Russian Criminal Tattoo Police Files at Grimaldi Gavin in London until November 22 of this year.

When these photos were taken, Bronnikov wasn’t concerned with composition or style. They were meant to act as a record and served a purely practical purpose. The gallery explains, “Their bodies display an unofficial history, told not just through tattoos, but also in scars and missing digits. Closer inspection only confirms our inability to comprehend the unimaginable lives of this previously unacknowledged caste.”

Tyler Spangler’s digital collages rehash old portraits to uncanny effect. He mixes faces like batter or melts them like wax. Of course this would be much more gruesome were it not for the joyful neon colours he employs. His artwork has the distinct aesthetic of the internet age. Wild patterns and powerful colours are overload for the eye, providing a high level of stimulation pretty much required, now, to incite a strong reaction in the viewer.

In some cases, the overabundance of pattern and colour has the viewer process less, or otherwise require us to take much more time to do it. When there is so much to take in, the options are either to skim over it, or take much more time to engage with it. Spangler has a great range of intensity. Some of his works have 5 or less elements, where other have 20 or more different textures.

Spangler works digitally, and creates all of his graphics himself. Whereas in aesthetic the works can be called collage, he uses a minimum of recycled imagery. In this way, Spangler is more like a painter than a collage artist, creating his own imagined imagery. He is a digital painter easily able manipulate familiar imagery. (Via Hi Fructose)

Illustrator Eugenia Loli assembles interstellar collages that are truly out of this world. A terrestrial globetrotter, Loli has lived in Greece, the UK, and the United States; her career has also spanned everything from computer programmer to nurse to filmmaker. Likewise, she seems to utilize disparate jigsaw pieces in her art and assembles them in ways that form a flawless whole.

The execution is truly flawless: whether it’s a woman driving into a galactic sunset or a jewel-encrusted roast beef dinner, Loli’s collages are transformative and transport the viewer into another universe. There’s also a vintage quality to the images, freezing them in time and space. In her artist’s statement, she says:

“Her collages, with the help of the title, often include a teasing, visual narrative, as if they’re a still frame of a surreal movie. The viewers are invited to make up the movie’s plot in their mind.”

There does indeed seem to be a sort of in media res quality to her illustrations, though it would seem that they would be just as inexplicable and magical even if the viewer had some inkling of how it all began. (via This Is Colossal)

RV FLIP не имеет собственной двигательной установки, поэтому всегда приходит на работу на буксире.
На месте Flip заполняет кормовые танки водой и переворачивается в рабочее положение; над водой из 108 метров корпуса остается лишь 17:

Переворот занимает 20-30 минут.


В таком положении RV FLIP чертовски стабилен и может спокойно измерять температуру, плотность и соленость воды, исследовать распространение в ней звука и т.д.
Внутри все приспособлено для "двойной" жизни: кровати и кухонное оборудование поворачиваются, в помещениях сделано по две двери, некоторые предметы изготовлены в двух экземплярах


Если я правильно понимаю, то над головой исследователя можно увидеть альтернативный трап (лестницу)

In the 1950s the LeTourneau company developed several overland trains, essentially oversized semi-trailer trucks that could travel over almost any terrain. Their intention was to be able to handle logistics needs without being dependent on local road or rail systems, allowing them to operate in back-country areas. The US Army had three experimental units built, the largest reaching almost 600 feet (183 m) long, which holds the record for the longest offroad vehicle. Road trains are in use in certain roles today, but the US Army examples and a few derivatives appear to be the only offroad examples built.

We are big fans of artist Jake Fried here at Beautiful/Decay (original post here), and yet he continues to impress us. He is a prolific drawer/painter/animator, creating epically complicated short clips that he calls “hand drawn experimental animations”. Watching these pieces is quite the experience. His style is so complex, and each frame packed with so many textures and details, you must be careful to blink at the right time, so as not to miss anything!

Even more impressively, he creates such hypnotizing animations from the simplest materials – coffee, water, ink, gouache, and white-out. With titles like Brain Lapse, Head Space, Down Into Nothing, The Deep End, Fried is inviting us into his own mind, and we soon see just how dense it is inside there. Layers of mathematical lines build into a background scene and reveal a head peering out from behind them. This then transforms into some other domestic space, or rather a non-space, where objects appear and disappear into the jungle of lines and cross hatching. Eyes, hands, heads, plants, moons, triangles, and landscapes feature heavily in Fried’s work. He says of his own work:

‘Raw Data’ took about four months from the first drawing to the final film. My work is not truly narrative – the medium is the message – but for this piece I knew I wanted to experiment with metallic-gouache, technological imagery and sustained head-on portraiture. I would say it’s generally about man vs. tech and a sense that the animation watches you as you watch it. My work is not really pre-planned; it becomes itself through the process of making. I fundamentally believe that art making should be a “discovery” process; otherwise I’d have no interest. Rather than just executing a plan, I want to learn something new or follow some unknown path. Artist Lia Melia grew up a few minutes walk away from the sea, and today it is still her main source of inspiration. And, you can definitely tell – her colorful, swirling paintings are reminiscent of the large body of water. Mythology has also been a life-long love of hers, and she depicts elemental forces that are represented by the gods.

Melia uses a variety of methods to create these highly-textured works, and she’s developed her practice over the course of many years. Powered pigments and solvents are baked into aluminium, or occasionally, onto glass. She uses fluid mixes which require high levels of control, so they are often thickened to make the medium easier to use. Different elements are layered to give them a rich, visual depth.

Looking closely at these paintings, we see that her skill in creating textures give the illusion of crashing waves, stormy skies, and ocean foam. Melia’s tightly-cropped compositions freeze a split second in time, and anyone who has stood in the water can imagine what happens beyond this scene. (Via Saatchi Art Tumblr)

New York-based German artist Markus Linnenbrink has created an enchanting installation which envelops visitors in a disorienting colorful pattern. Although not exactly in a ROYGBIV formation, this rainbow room, made of bold hues of acrylic paint covered in epoxy on resin, creates a unique experience for viewers. The piece above is named “WASSERSCHEIDE(DESIREALLPUTTOGETHER)” and is currently up in Germany at the art center Kunsthalle Nuernberg until October 12th.

Linnenbrink has worked within this use of line work and colors for much of his artistic career. While some of his shows have featured conventional paint on canvas work, he often utilizes the space to its maximum effect. Linnenbrink composes a piece of art one walks into, is a part of, and can see from all vantage points. One really intriguing work of his, shown below, features colored line paintings hung on walls that are doused in lines of grey and black.

The artist toys with color and boundaries of separation. The colors bleed into one another, drip lines form from gravity, and each layer is pulled into subsequent layers. Despite the rigidity of the lined patterns, there is always this aspect of chaos and an unwillingness to be contained. Boundary breaking, inside of the canvas and outside of it, stretching his vision across whatever parameters may be set architecturally. The dramatized effect of this work becomes atmospheric; how one relates to the space then changes, as the lines and contours of walls are abstracted, nearly dissolved, through the blanket of pattern. The piece is primarily dictated by the space it is shown in, but ultimately the space is taken over by the artwork, creating an interested and entirely unique interaction between the two within each and every installation.

Mixed media artist Anila Quayyum Agha has figured out how to decorate an entire room with shadows cast from a box. Laser cutting intricate patterns into a wooden cube, a light within the cube projects an intricate display of shadows that envelope the entire room in ornate design. The results are breathtaking and the philosophy behind her work is fascinating.

This project, titled “Intersections,” combines the patterning of Islamic sacred spaces with architectural aesthetics:

“The Intersections project takes the seminal experience of exclusion as a woman from a space of community and creativity such as a Mosque and translates the complex expressions of both wonder and exclusion that have been my experience while growing up in Pakistan. The wooden frieze emulates a pattern from the Alhambra, which was poised at the intersection of history, culture and art and was a place where Islamic and Western discourses, met and co-existed in harmony and served as a testament to the symbiosis of difference. For me the familiarity of the space visited at the Alhambra Palace and the memories of another time and place from my past, coalesced in creating this project. My intent with this installation was to give substance to mutualism, exploring the binaries of public and private, light and shadow, and static and dynamic. This installation project relies on the purity and inner symmetry of geometric design, the interpretation of the cast shadows and the viewer’s presence within a public space.”

Swiss artist Edgar Romanovskis uses simple digital editing techniques to portray the illusion of infinity within his outdoor portraiture. Starting with a hand-made frame, he photographs an outdoor scene either holding or setting the frame in it, then manipulates the image in Photoshop to mirror the frame endlessly, forming a geometric gateway that sinks into oblivion. The results are captivating.

Much of his previous work involves landscape photography, with heavy use of photo manipulation to pull at the tones and contrast, achieving the fullest impact with the image, and creating a nearly other-worldly look. In comparison to that type of work, this series, titled “Concept of Infinity,” has a beautifully muted and nearly fine art quality to it. The tones are even, and although the patterns are simple there is a nearly entrancing quality to them. This is a simple way to turn a beautiful landscape photograph into something that appears to fall into another dimension.

Стандартов ширины железнодорожной колеи довольно много. Обычно при переезде в другую зону поезд останавливают на несколько часов, поднимают вагоны и меняют вагонные тележки.


Но оказывается, станции по автоматическому изменению колеи существуют уже лет сорок. Трансформация происходит на ходу, на скорости до 15 км/час.


Систем смены колеи на ходу несколько, один из пионеров тут - компания Talgo, которая уже в 60-х решила вопрос с изменением колеи вагонов на границе Франции и Испании. По мере прохождения поездом переводного устройства на каждую колёсную пару приходится пять фаз коррекции колеи:


1. Боковые части тележки вступают в контакт с внешними направляющими, колеса разгружаются от веса вагонов.
2. Опоры замков, расположенные внизу тележки, соединяются со специальными направляющими и отжимаются вниз, при этом разблокируют крепления осей.
3. Специальные рельсы, установленные под углом, сдвигают колёса ближе друг к другу или разводят их в стороны.
4. Замки смещаются обратно вверх и фиксируют оси в новом положении.
5. Колёса вступают в контакт с рельсами и на них снова переносится вес вагона.



Несколько лет назад проскакивала новость, что такие вагоны собирается закупить Россия с прицелом на поезд Москва-Берлин, но дошло ли до реализации - мне неизвестно.

Немец Гюнтер Холторф и его жена Кристина — одни из самых известных автомобильных путешественников в истории. В 1989 году они решили отправиться из Германии на юг Африки на своем новеньком Mercedes Gelandewagen. Планировалось, что путешествие продлится два года, но оно затянулось из-за желания супругов посетить новые места. В 2010 году супруга Гюнтера умерла, но пожилой мужчина продолжил поездку. Сегодня он прибыл в Минск. Беларусь оставалась последней страной на планете, где не побывал этот Mercedes. Теперь мировое путешествие полностью завершено. Гюнтер рассказал корреспонденту Onliner.by, что машина вскоре отправится в музей Daimler, и продемонстрировал свой знаменитый автомобиль.

«Автомобиль был приобретен в 1989 году у официального дилера Mercedes. Он полностью серийный и не готовился для такого рода путешествий, — начал свой рассказ Гюнтер, протягивая карту. — Здесь вы можете видеть страны, в которых я побывал. Красные линии — это дороги, по которым проехал этот Mercedes. Только в одном Карибском заливе получилось посетить 22 страны. Проехал всю территорию бывшего Советского Союза от Мурманска до Владивостока и обратно».

Как это ни удивительно, но в Беларусь мужчина до сих пор не попадал. На карте указаны пять последних стран, которые Гюнтер планировал посетить в этом году. И Беларусь — самая последняя. Изначально поездка в нашу страну была запланирована немцем на 2010 год. Он тогда получил визу, но пересечь границу не смог — возникли проблемы с белорусской таможней из-за ввоза автомобиля.

«В 2010 году, когда я собирался впервые заехать в вашу страну, на границе меня остановили и сказали, что я могу попасть в Беларусь только без автомобиля. Это, конечно, не имело смысла, и я решил перенести визит к вам», — с улыбкой вспоминает Гюнтер.

11 октября мужчина передаст свой Mercedes Gelandewagen в музей Daimler. Машину будет принимать председатель правления концерна Дитер Цетше. В штутгартском музее уже подготовлена отдельная комната для этого экспоната. За 25 лет автомобиль проехал 900 тысяч километров, побывав во всех странах мира. Он даже получил имя — Отто. Это модификация 300 GD c дизельным двигателем, выпущенная в 1988 году. Машина имеет «родное» шасси и оригинальный мотор. Никаких серьезных поломок во время путешествия не было. Во время поездки по Мадагаскару Gelandewagen попал в аварию и перевернулся, поэтому у автомобиля заменено большинство деталей кузова (все, кроме капота и передних крыльев).

Гюнтер утверждает, что за 25 лет путешествия он ни разу не ночевал в гостинице и ни разу не ужинал в ресторане. В Минске он остановился на одной из АЗС, где нашел большую парковку для фур. В его Gelandewagen есть газовая плита, и открыв заднюю дверь, немец за несколько минут организовал импровизированную кухню. Есть даже приспособление для защиты плиты от ветра. Стол, за которым Гюнтер каждый день ест, был куплен в 1989 году. Стулья, судя по всему, более «молодые». Есть в машине и кровать, которая раскладывается от багажника до передних сидений. На ней пожилой мужчина ночует последние 25 лет. Когда он начал свое путешествие, ему был 51 год. В автомобиле также есть гамак, который часто фигурирует на фотографиях Отто в интернете. Гюнтер вместе с женой жил возле Мюнхена. У них есть сын, который несколько раз присоединялся к путешествию в разных точках.

«У меня кроме немецкого гражданства есть гражданства Аргентины и Уругвая. Я владею испанским языком как родным. Изначально мы с супругой собирались проехать на юг Африки и обратно. Но поездка нам очень понравилась, и мы решили съездить в Аргентину, которая является моим вторым домом. Там приняли решение немного задержаться в Латинской Америке и отправились в Бразилию и Мексику. А от Мексики рукой подать до Штатов. Так все и началось. Потом переплыли на корабле в Новую Зеландию. Оттуда в Австралию и т. д. В итоге поездка затянулась на 25 лет. В следующем месяце все закончится. Четыре года назад моя супруга умерла. Умерла она дома. Онкологическое заболевание. Но я продолжил путь в одиночку», — вспоминает мужчина.

В автомобиле нет никаких навигационных систем. Весь мир Гюнтер проехал пользуясь лишь бумажными картами. В салоне машины лежит развернутая карта Минска. Рядом — атлас дорог Украины, Европы, России. У Гюнтера несколько паспортов с бесчисленным количеством виз, среди которых две белорусские (на одной стоит штамп отказа).

«Из 900 тысяч километров, которые я проехал на этой машине, примерно 200 тысяч прошли вне асфальта. Gelandewagen — отличный внедорожник, который ни разу не подвел. Дизельный мотор работает как в первый день. А может, еще и лучше», — смеется Гюнтер, выгоняя машину для фотосессии на площадке дилера Mercedes.

Многие аксессуары расположены на крыше внедорожника. Гюнтеру часто приходится становиться на капот, чтобы достать тот или иной предмет. Для того чтобы капот не был скользким во время дождя, на него наклеены листы наждачки. Такие же элементы можно увидеть на армейских модификациях Gelandewagen.

Гюнтер Холторф — легендарная личность среди любителей автомобильных путешествий. Про него пишут многие блогеры. Канал BBC делал большую программу про легендарный Отто. Каждый день сотни людей вводят имя немца в Google. 25-летнее путешествие, вдохновившее многих автолюбителей, подходит к концу. Но Гюнтер уверяет, что ему есть чем заняться: «У меня большое количество увлечений. Я, например, коллекционирую купюры из разных стран. Также у меня есть куча различных вещей со всего мира. Все это нужно рассортировать для оформления коллекций. Все это я собирал в течение последних 25 лет. Когда вернусь домой, я точно не буду сидеть с банкой пива у телевизора».

«Череповесь» с финского и вепского переводится как «племя на Рыбьей горе», но ни одной горы здесь не найдешь, да и финнов с вепсами тоже не встретишь. Зато каждый второй окажется металлургом. Доменную печь запустили здесь в 50-х, и работать на самый крупный на Северо-Западе металлургический съехались стахановцы со всего Союза. Сейчас «Северсталь» по-прежнему является градообразующим предприятием, и на печь горбатятся уже дети и внуки тех самых стахановцев. 

В этом городе сложно мечтать — все, кто это делал, уже давно свалили в Питер и Москву. Все оставшиеся — либо смирились, либо бухают. Бухают обычно после работы во дворах и парках. Последних в Черепе всего два. Парк 200-летия расположен рядом с кирпичным заводом. Там молодые мамаши выгуливают своих малолетних детей, чтобы те дышали чистым кирпичным воздухом. Школьницы сидят на лавочках в ожидании принцев и пьют «ягуар» через соломинку. А металлурги по выходным устраивают под деревьями пикники с пивом и шашлыками.

В другом главном парке города — Парке культуры и отдыха — тусуется основная масса жителей. Здесь с десяток детских каруселей, на которые родители обычно стремятся усадить свое плачущее чадо, чтобы то хоть на пару минут оставило их в покое.

И забегаловки с пивом, шаурмой и зловонием, исходящим от пережаренного шашлыка. Здесь ночью еще можно встретить торчка, украдкой вспоминающего свою золотую молодость. Больше 10 лет назад парк был заброшен, и этим активно пользовались нарики, закупавшиеся неподалеку в цыганском квартале. Правда, времена изменились, и сейчас об этом уже многие забыли.

Череповец — город металлургов. Здесь им, кажется, посвящено все: улицы, площади и праздники. День металлурга — особое событие в городе. Отмечают его обычно весело и массово: с песнями местных и столичных исполнителей, пивом, фейерверками и драками.

Эти заведения почти в духе девяностых и нулевых: с большими танцполами, мерцающим шаром под потолком, девушками, скачущими на высокой платформе в безвкусных нарядах, и толстыми мужиками под сорок, пришедшими отдохнуть.

Как такового центра в городе нет — есть центральный проспект Победы, заканчивающийся заводом. По нему курсируют трамваи, увозя в «забой» сталеваров. Где-то в центре Победу пересекает Воскресенский. По нему череповчане обычно устраивают воскресный променад, проходя мимо единственного в городе театра и филармонии. Еще бы, походить по единственной исторической улице с постройками XIX века нужно хоть раз в неделю.

Далеко, правда, не уйдешь: проспект не очень большой, пройти его можно минут за 15 – 20, после чего окажешься на набережной. Вид со всех набережных города открывается прекрасный: на стройки, краны и мосты. Так что здесь можно только полюбоваться памятником покровителям Череповца — Афанасию и Феодосию (их все путают с Кириллом и Мефодием). Два мужика, в высоту метра четыре, стоят, раскинув руки, всегда оккупированные фотографами и молодоженами.

Еще один монумент, который ни местные, ни приезжие никак не оставят в покое, — памятник металлургам. 

Паренек в каске пользуется бешеной популярностью у детей, а еще более бешеной — у женщин. Каждая уважающая себя дама обязательно влезет на постамент, обнимет бронзового ребенка и сфотографируется с ним. Конечно же, с памятником не только фотографируются — рядом с ним сам бог велел собраться и выпить бутылочку пива. А то и две.

Череповец — город со спичечного коробка. Да, именно здесь делают самые известные спички с надписью «Феско» и синим самолетом. Спичечная фабрика, в народе просто «Спичка», расположена в «Фанере» — самом криминальном районе города, названном так в часть фанерно-мебельного комбината. 

Но времена изменились, и сейчас гулять здесь можно хоть днем, хоть ночью. Пацанчики теперь мирно сидят на лавочках, лузгают семечки и пьют пиво. Максимум, что с тобой может приключиться, — у тебя попросят на «пивас» или могут попытаться отжать телефон. Хотя заведения, в которых вы можете прочувствовать колорит прошедших десятилетий, все еще существуют. Охранники в них, одетые в треники, смотрят на всех исподлобья. Бармены, больше похожие на продавщиц, разбавляют пиво водкой. Из плохих колонок хрипит Валерия. 

Здесь все автоматизировано: дом, работа, парк, дача по выходным. Если ты выпадаешь из графика — тебя выкидывают на помойку, как негодную деталь. Здесь собственные правила, которые нарушать нельзя. 

В этом городе ты постоянно чувствуешь себя никчемным. И счастлив в итоге лишь тот, кто уехал отсюда.

 

Photographer Peter Stewart captures the pulsating neon guts of Hong Kong from a unique perspective. Standing at the bottom of dizzying skyscrapers and towering apartment buildings, Stewart offers us a glimpse of modern architecture as a force of nature. Each floor of the buildings he photographs looks like the ring of a tree, surreal in their orderliness.

In an interview with The Creators Project, Stewart explains how he chooses his subjects. “All it takes really is a keen eye for finding the beauty in the monotonous,” he says. “The everyday structures that we often fail to appreciate.”

The collection is called “Stacked – Hong Kong,” a fitting name. From some angles, the buildings almost look like life-sized Lego blocks. Oddly, the photographs do not impart a sense of claustrophobia, but rather a peaceful calm. The bright colors and little personal flourishes — a balcony-dwelling plant here, a line of fresh laundry there — are tell-tale signs of human life. It’s almost a little too calm — where are all the city’s inhabitants?

Still, rather than looking post-apocalyptic, Stewart’s portrait of Hong Kong is dreamy rather than dismal. It’s as though the city is asleep or simply waiting, holding its breath.

Sabato Visconti is a photographer, visual artist, and digital puppeteer. He fine-tunes his art on an atomic level by using a number of techniques that manipulate code and scramble pixels into what is often surprising results. “Glitch art,” as the aesthetic is called, uses a palette of static, snow, and other shadowy artifacts to create art that is, despite its hi-tech nature, exceedingly organic.

The intense colors and bio-rhythmic patterns that emerge from Visconti’s glitched-out photographs are raw and still retain an emotional connection to their subjects. Some are more abstract, emerging like clouds of texture that seem by turns woven and crumpled and, when it gets particularly noisy, crunchy. Though it might be counterintuitive, it makes sense that glitch art is organic; after all, artifacts in old-school photographs and film footage have always occurred spontaneously. Now, artists are harnessing that force of microcosmic nature and using it creatively.

“You’re trying to find this really fine balance where something doesn’t break fully, but breaks just to the point that you can see it breaking,” Visconti explains. The tension between form and disintegration is palpable in his work; at times, it’s like staring into a digital void or a watching a snapshot of an identity crisis. He takes it one step further in a collection called, “Vertigo by Alfred Glitchcock,” which takes stills and remixes them into evocative visual mayhem.
