wonderous-world:

Green Lake is located in Tragöss Austria. In spring snowmelt raises the lake level about 10 meters. This phenomenon, which lasts only a few weeks, covers the hiking trails, meadows, trees and everything in between. The result is magical to watch diving landscapes. using nothing more than newton’s laws of gravitation, we...

using nothing more than newton’s laws of gravitation, we astronomers can confidently predict that several billion years from now our home galaxy, the milky way, will merge with our neighbouring galaxy, andromeda. because the distances between the stars are so great compared to their sizes, few if any stars in either galaxy will actually collide.
any life on the worlds of that far off future should be safe, but they will be treated to an amazing billion-year-long lightshow.
a dance of a half a trillion stars, to music first heard on one little world, by a man who had but one true friend.

S. Korea Prime Minister Offers Resignation Over Ferry Sinking

South Korea's prime minister says he will resign over the ferry disaster that left more than 300 people dead or missing — and left the victims' families in anguish for days, as fruitless rescue attempts were made.

Chung Hong-won also apologized to a country increasingly angry over the handling of the sinking and for lax regulatory enforcement that authorities say contributed to the accident.

The New York Times reported:

"A somber-looking Mr. Chung accepted the criticism on Sunday when he offered 'an apology to the people' during a nationally televised news conference. 'When I saw the people's sadness and fury, I thought it was natural for me to step down with an apology,' he said."

"During the search process, the government took inadequate measures and disappointed the public," Chung said, according to CNN. "I should take responsibility for everything as the prime minister, but the government can assume no more. So I will resign as prime minister."

Power in the South Korean political system is held mainly by the president, Park Geun-hye, so this resignation is more symbolic, the Associated Press reported. The AP reports a presidential spokesperson has said Park will accept the resignation.

"Chung was heckled by relatives and his car was blocked when he visited a shelter on an island near the site of the sinking a week ago," the AP said.

The ferry Sewol sank off the southwest coast of the Korean peninsula on April 16. Most of the 476 people on board were high school students on their way to a resort island. The cause of the disaster is still under investigation.

Church of St. Pierre | Le Corbusier  | José Oubrerie | Miroslava Brooks

Designed to be a church in the model city of Firminy Vert, the construction of Saint-Pierre was begun in 1971, six years after Le Corbusier’s death in 1965. Due to local political conflicts it remained stalled from 1975 to 2003, when the local government declared the mouldering concrete ruin an “architectural heritage” and financed its completion. The building was completed by the French architect, José Oubrerie, Le Corbusier’s student for many years.

It has been used for many different purposes, as a secondary school and as a shelter. As the laicist French state may not use public funds for religious buildings, Saint-Pierre is now used as a cultural venue.

Why the Sharing Economy Is About Desperation, Not Trust

by Soulskill

An anonymous reader writes "Wired recently ran a cover story about the sharing economy — shorthand for the rise of peer-to-peer rental services like Lyft and Airbnb — which they call a cultural and economic breakthrough. They say it has ushered in a 'new era of Internet-enabled intimacy.' An article at New York Magazine has another theory: that it arose because of the weakness in the real economy. Quoting: 'A huge precondition for the sharing economy has been a depressed labor market, in which lots of people are trying to fill holes in their income by monetizing their stuff and their labor in creative ways. In many cases, people join the sharing economy because they've recently lost a full-time job and are piecing together income from several part-time gigs to replace it. In a few cases, it's because the pricing structure of the sharing economy made their old jobs less profitable. (Like full-time taxi drivers who have switched to Lyft or Uber.) In almost every case, what compels people to open up their homes and cars to complete strangers is money, not trust.'"

Report: Pope Paul VI to be beatified after California ‘miracle’

by Josephine McKenna
Russian Sledges

“The diagnosis was severe,” the magazine article said. “The baby would probably die inside the uterus, or at best, would be born with seriously damaged kidneys.”

Doctors advised the woman to terminate the pregnancy but instead the mother reportedly placed an image of the late pontiff and a remnant of his vestments on her stomach and began praying to him.

The baby was born healthy at the 39th week of the pregnancy and witnesses were unable to explain the change in the baby’s condition. Doctors closely monitored the child’s health, particularly its kidneys, until age 12.

VATICAN CITY (RNS) According to the weekly magazine of the Pauline Fathers, a miracle involving the birth of a baby in California in the 1990s has been attributed to the late Italian pope; the identity of the family and its location has not been revealed.

Courtney shared this story from Super Opinionated.

zemmer:

randomredux:

"Brozen," "Bronies," what it all means is "I am so insecure about what I like that I MUST rebrand it as masculine before associating with it."

i read it more as “i hate girls and femininity so much that i am insulted at even the idea that i might have something in common with them”. like, i have a very hard time believing that it’s insecurity and not outright hatred that fuels that kind of thing.

someone explain “Broga” to me as well, or is that orthogonal to this?

The depths of California’s drought

CALIFORNIA is ending its warmest winter on record, aggravating what could well be the region’s worst drought in 500 years, according to paleoclimatologists. It has devastated the state. Some small communities may run out of drinking water. Farmers are considering idling half a million acres of farmland, which could cause billions of dollars in economic damage. The last time the water supply was as low, in the 1960s, California’s population was just less than 20m. Today, the same amount of water must accommodate twice as many people—underscoring the severity of the crisis. For our chart, we scraped the end-of-month reservoir storage records from California’s Department of Water Resources for all 191 reservoirs starting in...Continue reading

Landfill excavation unearths years of crushed Atari treasure [Updated]

Megan Geuss

ALAMOGORDO, NM—The legend was true. Atari really did dump a bunch of E.T. and other Atari 2600 cartridges and paraphernalia into a landfill 30 years ago. Today, a team of video game archaeologists recovered the proof.

With the wind at full blast out in the New Mexico desert, CAT tractors pulled heap after heap of waste from a 30-year-old landfill. It smelled faintly of sewage, and dust was everywhere. Occasionally the tractor dumped a heap off to the side in a cleared space, prompting a gaggle of men in hard hats and safety vests to gather around.

This team was hired by Fuel Entertainment and Xbox Entertainment Studios to analyze the contents of the landfill, which legend has always said contained truckloads of Atari games, consoles, or factory waste. The two production companies intend to make a documentary on the history of Atari, set to debut sometime this year.

Sunday’s Episode Of Cosmos Will Feature Two Female Astronomers Everybody Should Learn About

Russian Sledges

Cosmos is a series that really gets me. From the pure scientific wonder to the top-shelf special effects, it's one of the things I look most forward to watching every week. I especially enjoy the focus on historical astronomers, and have been eagerly anticipating the inclusion of women in science. This Sunday, my wait is over. The series' eighth episode, "Sisters of the Sun," will bring us not one, but two brilliant women who changed the way we understand our universe. Judging by a preview clip (which we've got below), the episode will also touch on the obstacles faced by female scientists, particularly those working in the early 20th century.
