Smell May Be the Reason Why Cilantro Tastes Like Soap To Some People
Nacho Cabellero, a 3rd year bioinformatics PhD student at Boston University, explains about the genetic variant that causes the herb cilantro to taste like soap to 10% of those who had their genetics analyzed through 23andMe, himself included.
The first time I tried cilantro I didn’t realize it; I just thought somebody had emptied a bottle of Old Spice on my pizza in an attempt to poison me. Cilantro tastes like soap to approximately 10% of the people who have had their genotype analyzed by 23andMe. The currently accepted explanation is that those of us who passionately despise cilantro were born with a genetic variant known as a single-nucleotide polymorphism (or SNP, pronounced ‘snip’)…The cilantro SNP is called rs72921001, and apparently, its genomic location lays close to a cluster of olfactory receptor genes that includes OR6A2, the gene most likely to be alerting our brain about the presence of cilantro.
Nacho’s information comes from a very interesting report 2012 report from Flavour Journal.
The leaves of the Coriandrum sativumplant, known as cilantro or coriander, are widely used in many cuisines around the world. However, far from being a benign culinary herb, cilantro can be polarizing—many people love it while others claim that it tastes or smells foul, often like soap or dirt. This soapy or pungent aroma is largely attributed to several aldehydes present in cilantro….These results confirm that there is a genetic component to cilantro taste perception and suggest that cilantro dislike may stem from genetic variants in olfactory receptors.

Netflix has gone from Emmys crasher to guest of honor
Netflix crashed the Emmys last year, but with 31 nominations this time around, it’s clear that the streaming network has already shifted from interloper to frontrunner.
In this year’s Primetime Emmy nominations, announced today, Netflix more than doubled its haul, from 14 to 31. That increase is largely thanks to Orange is the New Black, which earned 12 nominations, more than any other comedy series. House of Cards, meanwhile, got 13 nominations, up from 9 in 2013. Also receiving nominations for Netflix: the Ricky Gervais comedy Derek and documentaries The Square and Brave Miss World.
Here’s how Netflix’s nominations compare to other networks:
The nomination tallies for House of Cards and Orange is the New Black dwarf those of perennial Emmy favorites like Modern Family (just 10 nominations this year), Mad Men (8), The Good Wife (5) and Homeland (4).
While Orange is the New Black has quickly become one of TV’s most critically acclaimed shows, those accolades don’t always translate into Emmy nominations. Look no further than FX’s superb The Americans, which despite putting on one of the greatest seasons of television this past year, landed a single nomination, for guest actress in a drama.
And while Netflix’s streaming peers were largely overlooked by Emmy voters— Amazon campaigned heavily for its John Goodman comedy Alpha House, but was shut out—its huge showing will make it much easier from them to join the party next year, especially after Amazon rolls out its much stronger lineup of new series. (Keep your eye on Transparent, which is already attracting critical raves based on its fantastic pilot.)
But today’s impressive tally also increases the pressure on Emmy night. After last year’s Emmys, I wrote that Netflix was one of the night’s biggest winners, even though it didn’t win any major awards. Last year, just earning those nominations and smaller wins (like the directing Emmy for House of Cards) legitimized Netflix in the same way that early Emmy victories had once done for HBO, AMC, and FX.
This year, however, House of Cards and Orange is the New Black have catapulted from “just happy to be here” to frontrunner status. That means on August 25, Netflix needs to win one of the big trophies—outstanding comedy series for Orange, or outstanding actor in a drama for Kevin Spacey of House of Cards—to truly be considered one of television’s elite networks.
Correction: a previous version of this post stated House of Cards won 12 nominations. The correct number is 13.

FCC Republican says net neutrality rules too “onerous” for ISPs
FCC Commissioner Michael O’Rielly today blasted the commission's net neutrality proposal, calling it too "onerous" for Internet service providers and saying there should be no net neutrality rules until "there’s evidence of an actual problem it would address."
O'Rielly, one of two Republicans on the five-member FCC, co-wrote an op-ed in National Review with US Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN). In it, they discussed the rules the FCC voted in favor of in May. This proposal was also widely panned by net neutrality advocates because even though it would prevent ISPs from blocking content, it would also allow them to charge third-party Web services for a faster path to consumers, or a "fast lane." FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said his rules would prevent ISPs from degrading the traffic of Web services that don't pay fast lane tolls, but opponents say that creating a faster path for those that do pay is essentially the same thing.
O'Rielly thinks the FCC erred by issuing rules at all. "In its most recent Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on net neutrality, the FCC shirked its responsibility again. The commission’s woefully inadequate 'analysis' started with an unfounded assumption that the rules would be beneficial, then proposed several pages of onerous requirements, and concluded with one meager paragraph seeking comment on how to minimize the unquantified burdens," Blackburn and O'Rielly wrote. "Seeking comment on burdens is no substitute for performing an actual cost-benefit analysis, and doing so as an afterthought shows a disregard for the president’s directives."

Martha Stewart updates her drone for summer
Martha Stewart is a noted tech lover. Last year Stewart professed her appreciation for the iPad, calling it "addictive" and "awesome" — but she seems to have a particular affinity for drones. Earlier this year, she told Vanity Fair that she had obtained a , which she used to take aerial photographs around her home.
Now she's upgraded. Stewart says one of the members of her security detail recently purchased a DJI Phantom, a more advanced quadrotor device than the Parrot AR drone, which can be equipped with an underslung 14-megapixel camera. It's allowed Stewart and her staff to publish a new set of aerial photos, shot from a height of almost 900 feet, on Stewart's personal website. The gallery shows her substantial personal estate, with stables, paddocks, vegetable patches, and large farmhouses. Stewart says that while difficult to control, drones are "lots of fun to play with," before inviting comments from readers on both the quality of her photos, and the ways drones can be used in the future.

Aereo: Hey, we’re a cable company after all!

Less than a month after its Supreme Court loss, TV-over-the-Internet startup Aereo has filed a letter with a lower court, laying out its final legal strategy—one that it hopes can resurrect it from the grave.
It's going to act like a cable company.
If it walks like a duck...
Aereo customers rented up to two tiny, dime-sized antennas that are housed in facilities across the country. The antennas captured local, over-the-air broadcasts and funneled them to local customers in real time. The content was freed to stream to most any Internet-connected device. Another antenna synced with a DVR for later viewing for about $12 monthly. Broadcasters decried it as "technological gimmickry" to skirt copyright and other retransmission laws.

WSJ: TSMC is shipping its first Apple processors, replacing Samsung
Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC) is already the largest independent chip foundry, and it's about to get a little bigger, as the Wall Street Journal reports that TSMC has begun manufacturing and shipping new chips for Apple. Samsung has manufactured all iPhone and iPad processors for Apple to date, and news of the switch to TSMC follows years of rumors that Apple was looking to switch.
The report indicates that TSMC is using its new 20nm manufacturing process to make the chips (Samsung is using a 28nm process). It's difficult to do apples-to-apples comparisons of different processes from different foundries, but in general, smaller manufacturing processes allow chip designers to fit more transistors into the same amount of space or to fit the same amount of transistors into a smaller space. Chips made on smaller processes can typically increase performance while keeping power usage the same or maintain performance while reducing power usage—both will be important to improving performance and battery life in next-generation phones and tablets.
Even though the chips are reportedly shipping now, that doesn't mean current iPhones and iPads will soon switch to TSMC-made chips. Adapting an existing processor architecture to a different foundry's manufacturing tech takes quite a bit of work by itself. It's more likely that existing A5, A6, and A7 SoCs will continue to be made at Samsung for the time being, while TSMC focuses on new chips like the A8 that's expected for next-generation iOS devices.

Recently revived ISEE-3 probe can’t fire engines, can’t change orbit

Not every space story can have a Hollywood ending, and unfortunately it’s looking like the situation with the newly resurrected ISEE-3 space probe is going to have a bittersweet conclusion. The International Sun-Earth Explorer 3 satellite has been dormant since 1998, but a crowdfunded group of "citizen scientists" were given permission by NASA to assume control of the spacecraft and see about bringing it into a closer orbit. The group, called the ISEE-3 Reboot Project, has been posting periodic updates on its blog, but the latest news isn’t good at all—ISEE-3’s thrusters aren’t operating as expected.
The probe uses small monopropellant rockets for attitude and translation (i.e., turning and moving); these thrusters work by squirting some amount of toxic hydrazine fuel into a thrust chamber coated with a catalyst. The hydrazine reacts very energetically with the catalyst, and the resulting puff of gas is directed out of a thrust nozzle, turning or moving the craft. The catch—and this is a catch for any engine—is that you need a way to move the fuel from its tank into the engine. For most rocket engines intended to operate in microgravity and vacuum, the simplest way to do this is not with complex pumps but rather by pressurizing the fuel tank with some amount of non-reactive gas (nitrogen is the most common). When you need to fire the engine, you squeeze fuel out of the tanks by pushing in more nitrogen.
It appears that ISEE-3’s nitrogen reserves have either been depleted or have leaked away into the void. Although the spacecraft was able to act on some of the commands sent to it during a spin-up on July 3 and a Trajectory Correction Maneuver on July 8, the ISEE-3 Reboot Project scientists suspect that the spacecraft’s initial movement was the result of residual pressurized fuel in the propulsion system. The team has been performing remote troubleshooting on the craft and they believe they have eliminated malfunctioning valves and other hardware issues as a source of failure (and you thought fixing your parents’ e-mail over the phone was hard!).

Pinboard Turns Five

Today marks five years since I launched the website that my mom still refers to as 'the other bedbugs'. Happy business birthday to me!
Any site that aspires to be an archive starts life with a credibility problem. The Internet is strewn with the corpses (or in some cases, zombies) of sites that once promised to save your links forever. As people keep discovering, building a bookmarking site is easy, but making a business of bookmarking is hard. Like one of those leathery, spiny plants that is able to thrive in the desert where everything else dies, I have tried to find ways to adapt to this hostile business environment. And I have feasted on the flesh of my rivals!
I raise this brimming skull to the awesome group of users and fellow-travelers who have made it possible.

The biggest surprise (to me) is how predictable Pinboard has been over the past three years. Users come and go, like on every site, but the number of active users stays roughly the same. And the site makes roughly the same amount of money (around $200K) every year.
If you've ever run a small website, you'll recognize how weird this is. Typically everything in a small project—traffic, user count, revenue—is spiky. You spend a long time treading water and then big events happen that dominate everything else. This was true for the first two years I ran the site, but since then, things have settled down remarkably.
I regret that I totally forgot to keep downtime stats this year. There wasn't a lot of it, but I should probably track it better so I can brag about it next year, unless it goes up, in which case I will never mention it again.
Now back to some beard-stroking:
I see my role much like a small-town praire banker in the 1880's. My job is to project an aura of calm, solvency, and permanence in an industry where none of those adjectives applies. People are justifiably risk-averse when it comes to their bookmarks, and they are looking for stability. This means several things at once:
On the most basic level, the site just has to work.
On the design level, it means not futzing with stuff unnecessarily, except for bug fixes and basic improvements. Luckily there is so much work to do on Pinboard that I am immune to the temptations of a redesign. If there is a feature (or bug) you love in 2014, chances are excellent it will still be there, like a cherished friend, years from now when your trembling and aged hands go to make that final click.
Finally, there is stability on the business level. This means persuading people (including myself) that I am going to stick around, and then actually earning enough money to do that.
The money part turns out to be easy. People will pay for a decent service. As long as you stay small and don't forget to have revenue, you too can build a bookmarking website. There is plenty of room to specialize!
My strategy of pre-emptively antagonizing anyone who might possibly have an interest in acquiring or funding the site has worked wonderfully. In five years, I haven't received a single email from an investor or potential acquirer. The closest I came was a few months ago, when the new Delicious owners reached out to me about providing "vision", but I think they were just unfamiliar with my oeuvre. They learned quickly.
So the biggest risk in a project like this remains burnout.
Avoiding burnout is difficult to write about, because the basic premise is obnoxious. Burnout is a rich man's game. Rice farmers don't get burned out and spend long afternoons thinking about whether to switch to sorghum. Most people don't have the luxury of thinking about their lives in those terms. But at the rarefied socioeconomic heights of computerland, it's true that if you run a popular project by yourself for a long time, there's a high risk that it will wear you out.
It's not the fact of working on just one project that's the problem. This dude, for example, has spent much of his life building a Boeing 777 out of manila folders. Another guy (always dudes!) is slowly excavating his basement with toy trucks.
What burns you out is the constant strain of being responsible for a lot of other people's stuff.
The good news is, as you get older, you gain perspective. Perspective helps alleviate burnout.
The bad news is, you gain perspective by having incredibly shitty things happen to you and the people you love. Nature has made it so that perspective is only delivered in bulk quantities. A railcar of perspective arrives and dumps itself on your lawn when all you needed was a microgram. This is a grossly inefficient aspect of the human condition, but I'm sure bright minds in Silicon Valley are working on a fix.
Perspective does not make you immune to burnout. It just makes burnout less scary. I've gone through a few episodes since starting Pinboard, and I'm sure there will be more to come. People have been very understanding about my occasional need to flee the Internet. I find that the longer I run the site, the more resistant I become to the idea of ever giving it up, even if I need to take the occasional break. It is pleasant to work on something that people draw benefit from. It is especially pleasant to work on something lasting. And I enjoy the looking-glass aspect of our industry, where running a mildly profitable small business makes me a crazy maverick not afraid to break all the rules.
Most of all, I'm gratified that people have been patient and considerate over the whole lifetime of the project. There has been a lot of goodwill sent my way that makes my job vastly easier. Thank you to all the people who have used the site over the years, and the many people who have helped me build it and keep it running. To my competitors: I will crush you! To everyone else: you're wonderful! Upgrade!

Acting as both a semi-immersive lightning experience, or as speaker with visual feedback, this nightlight/nightspeaker hybrid introduces a new discourse for what a nightlight could be. Richard writes: “Advances in physical computing and interaction design hardware over recent years have created a new breed of smartobjects, which are gaining more and more traction in the design world.”
The cloud itself is made by felting hypoallergenic fiberfill to a sponge casing that forms the frame of the cloud, holding the speakers and componentry within. (A custom felting tool was constructed, made from the left-over sponge casing and four felting needles.) Users control the functions of the cloud through a small wireless remote….

"Twilight" star Kellan Lutz has been cast as actor William Shatner in a movie about social psychologist Stanley Milgram.
Milgram worked as a consultant on the "Star Trek" icon's 1976 TV movie "The Tenth Level," in which the actor portrayed a character based on the professor.
Lutz will join a star-studded cast, which includes Peter Sarsgaard and Winona Ryder, in the film about the psychologist, who developed the controversial Obedience Experiments at Yale University, where he studied the reactions of people who believed they were sending harmful electrical shocks to friendly strangers.
Sarsgaard will portray Milgram in the film, which is due to hit theatres in 2015.
