Sega Saturn SP ⊟

Pop it open and play Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, and other classic Sega Saturn games that never actually got portable versions. :o( I wouldn’t mind this as a cover plate for a New 3DS — it goes along with this Sega Saturn menu theme for the handheld. Oh never mind neither of those are available in North America. What am I even doing in this post. Why do I always do this. Credit to Toby Stark-kun for the Sega Saturn SP pic.

Black developers speak out on stereotypes in gaming

by Philip Kollar

Yesterday at GDC 2015, professor and game designer Derek Manns and Dennis Mathews of Revolution Interactive Studios held a roundtable discussion on black stereotypes in gaming. Early in the talk, Manns clarified that they wanted to discuss to talk about characters in games, but also stereotypes about black developers and gamers.

Manns also said that it was important for this to be a roundtable rather than a talk, because other people in the industry needed to share their experiences as well.

"Blacks in gaming should not just be about developing positive characters," Manns said, "but also about what can be created by diversity in development."

Manns noted that while the industry has seen some improvement in the last decade in its distribution of demographics, the percentage of black developers has increased a measly .5 percent — from 2 to 2.5 percent of all developers. Those stats come from the IGDA, which Mathews said is the only organization in gaming that is actively gathering analytics on demographics.

"stereotypes tie into publisher decisions of what should be put into games"

Taking over the roundtable, Mathews said that they've held a diversity talk through the IGDA every year. This year's attendance — a very diverse group of around 50 or so —was the largest audience they've ever had.

Mathews said one of the sources of stereotypes in gaming comes early in the process, stemming from the very concept of a "target audience." Developers attempt to pinpoint who will be playing their game and, in doing so, turn to stereotypes, even unknowingly.

"Those stereotypes tie into publisher decisions of what games get picked up and what should be put into games," Mathews said.

As the roundtable opened up to audience participation, they started with stereotypes of what black people play. Manns brought up the notion that black people are primarily interested in sports games, like the Madden and NBA 2K series.

One audience member brought up the fact that the fighting game community is very diverse. Another audience member identifying himself as a developer working on a fighting game revealed that, according to his statistics, some 60 percent of people who play fighting games in the U.S. are African American.

"It's not just about the genre," said one audience participant. "It's about what you get out of it." He went on to say that many African Americans bought RPGs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age when he worked at GameStop years ago; we just don't hear about it as much because those don't inspire big public events such as fighting game tournaments.

Another attendee noted that one of the reasons stereotypes in gaming and a lack of black developers may exist is because of early console and PC distribution.

"First iterations of PCs and consoles like the PlayStation were missed in poorer, urban communities," he said. "The developers inspired by those first iterations were white. They're the ones making games now, and it shows in what they create."

Mathews moved the conversation on to the question of what diversity is as a whole. He noted that issues dealing with African Americans are a narrow slice of diversity. "Diversity includes women, transgender, accessibility, disability," he said.

Mathews summed up the biggest reason why diversity is needed in one phrase: "People don't know what they don't know." He explained that often developers who aren't black don't even realize when they're drawing on stereotypes because they don't have any black coworkers to call it out.

"Hiring is done via word of mouth," Mathews said. "It's people you know you work well with, which often means people who are like you, which often means people who are the same race."

"Can you trust yourself to create something about a type of person you're not familiar with?"

For the last portion of the roundtable, the group moved onto a complex discussion of whether developers should try to create characters of other races, genders and cultures if they might not know or understand those races, genders and cultures themselves.

"Can you trust yourself to create something about a type of person you're not familiar with?" one audience participant asked. She conceded that it's possible, but you have to commit to doing the right research.

"You have the ability to create something that's outside your culture," another audience member said. "You just need to understand that it's not your culture. We spend too much time trying to analyze if you're authentic to an experience. Don't be scared of trying something new and getting rejected."

Others argued that said research should include specifically reaching out to and talking to people. "It's not enough that you're researching on the internet," said one participant.

Another audience member shared an anecdote of his experience playing through the first Dead Space, where the main character was wearing a helmet for most of the game. "I wanted Isaac to be black so bad that I just assumed he was until he took off his helmet," he said. "It doesn't change the game, but it would have made it more special to me."

Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry screenshot 1400

Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry screenshot 1400

Someone else in the audience agreed. He told a story about talking with a major triple-A developer about how much he liked the Freedom Cry downloadable add-on for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. "But it's just more of the same," the developer said.

"It might have been the exact same game, but it was a completely different game for me," the audience member said. "I was a black guy saving other black guys from slavery."

One audience member pointed to The Walking Dead's Lee as a great black character specifically because he's both African American and an "everyman" character. "Blackness is not a monolith," he said.

Finishing with a discussion on how the industry can better address these issues, Manns said that more opportunities need to be given to black developers, especially by platform operators like Microsoft and Sony.

"Give us a deal for one game," Manns said. "I have plenty of friends in this industry who are black developers and very talented, but I don't have the money to pay them."

"There's no critical mass"

Some members of the crowd seemed hopeful that a "paradigm shift" in the industry is about to happen, especially with recent announcements about so game development engines like Source and Unreal being available for free.

Others were cautious. "There's no critical mass," said one audience participant. "There's no line that says, 'Hey, we're good.' It's a constant gradient. As things grow, you have to keep pushing forward."

Another audience member noted that change needs to start on an individual level, particularly with hiring managers. "If you're a hiring manager, come to events like this, and if someone says something that impresses you, introduce yourself and exchange cards," she said. "You have to realize that you yourself have a bias to hang out with people like you and hire people like you, so you have to actively fight against that bias."

As the roundtable ended, Manns and Mathews highlight Blacks in Gaming, an organization in its first year of existence that is seeking talented people to fill leadership positions. They also promised more panels throughout the week further discussing the issues facing African American portrayals and representation in gaming.

Historical Map: General Railway Development to 1985, Melbourne, Australia (1969)

Submitted by John Mullany via email.

Here’s an interesting rail planning map from 1969, presumably produced in association with the 1969 Melbourne Transportation Plan. It outlines all the improvements planned for Melbourne’s metropolitan rail system, including a whole bunch of new branches as shown in blue. According to the map, the works depicted were to be completed by 1985.

Fast forward to 2015 — some 30 years past that deadline — and only the City Loop (opened between 1981 and 1985) and the extension to Westona (1985, now part of a loop on the Werribee Line) have been built. The rest remain unrealised, with the Doncaster Line being a fine example of a project stuck forever in “planning hell”.

The weak link in Apple Pay’s strong chain is bank verification. Who’s to blame?

by Megan Geuss

Earlier this week, a February blog post by mobile payments consultant Cherian Abraham captured the attention of the media and set off a flurry of articles about rampant fraud on Apple Pay. But despite headlines declaring that Apple Pay sees 60 times more fraud than magnetic stripe credit cards, the details are a bit more nuanced. It turns out that Apple Pay as a platform appears quite secure—it hasn’t yet seen any man-in-the-middle or other hacking attacks (that we know of) that could result in the loss of thousands of credit card numbers, like the Target breach did. But Apple Pay as a service, offered to customers in conjunction with bank issuers, might be struggling to keep up with the persistence of identity thieves.

Abraham, who works as an adviser to SimplyTapp, a company that builds Host Card Emulation technology for devices using Android, says identity thieves are buying iPhones with stolen credit card information and then loading them with that stolen credit card information. Because the fraudster's iPhone is so new, Abraham argues, there’s very little detail that Apple can send to the banks to help them verify who the user is and if that card information is fraudulent.

Abraham writes (emphasis his):

Stop the presses: HTTPS-crippling “FREAK” bug affects Windows after all

by Dan Goodin

Computers running all supported versions of Microsoft Windows are vulnerable to "FREAK," a bug disclosed Monday that for more than a decade has made it possible for attackers to decrypt HTTPS-protected traffic passing between vulnerable end-users and millions of websites.

Microsoft confirmed the vulnerability in an advisory published Thursday. A vulnerability-scanning service at FREAKAttack.com, a site that offers information about the bug, confirmed the advisory, showing that the latest version of IE 11 running on a fully patched Windows 7 machine was susceptible. Previously, it was believed that the Windows system was immune to the attacks.

FREAK attacks—short for Factoring attack on RSA-EXPORT Keys—are possible when an end-user with a vulnerable device connects to a vulnerable HTTPS-protected website. Vulnerable sites are those configured to use a weak cipher that many presumed had been retired long ago. In analyses immediately following Monday's disclosure of FREAK, it was believed Android devices, iPhones and Macs from Apple, and smartphones from Blackberry were susceptible. The addition of Windows dramatically increases the number of users known to be vulnerable.

Proposal to reduce OR minimum wage to $7.25 per hour, introduced by Cedric Hayden

firehose

'What this means at the most basic level is that if an employer pays $1 into an employee’s health insurance benefit for every hour that employee works, then the employer would be allowed to pay the employee only $8.25 in hourly wages. Add the $1 in health benefit and the employee’s total compensation would be $9.25 per hour, which is Oregon’s current minimum wage.

If passed, HB 3325 would allow employers to count not only health insurance, but also retirement benefits toward the total compensation minimum wage. Also, in anticipation of the passage of a statewide paid sick leave law, the bill would allow employers to count paid sick days toward the minimum wage. Even if the statewide paid sick leave bill fails, workers in Portland and Eugene (both of which have passed citywide paid sick leave ordinances) would see their hourly wage reduced by the amount they are paid for days off of work when they are sick.

For working Oregonians who are already paid poverty wages by their employers, hourly wages will be reduced even further. In fact hourly wages could be reduced as low as the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.'

Racist E-mails Arent the Worst Thing in the DOJs Ferguson Report

by Carla Murphy

'racist e-mails rank among the least disturbing parts of a report so caustic it reads like an Onion article. What struck me was that Ferguson's revenue-driven policing effectively steals from working-class and poor African-Americans--and the City of Ferguson has not conducted a full accounting of the cost of that theft.'

Racist E-mails Aren't the Worst Thing in the DOJ's Ferguson Report

A day after the Department of Justice's report, racist e-mails exchanged between Ferguson police officers are capturing headlines and, perhaps, dominating social media shares. One officer has been fired and two others have been placed on administrative leave. "This type of behavior will not be tolerated," Mayor James Knowles said at an evening press conference yesterday at which he took no questions. But, truly, racist e-mails rank among the least disturbing parts of a report so caustic it reads like an Onion article. What struck me was that Ferguson's revenue-driven policing effectively steals from working-class and poor African-Americans--and the City of Ferguson has not conducted a full accounting of the cost of that theft.

In the DOJ report, we learn that as a result of eight charges stemming from false arrest, one 32-year-old man lost his job as a contractor with the federal government (read: good benefits). We also learn that one woman is still paying down on an illegal parking ticket she received seven years ago. As of December 2014 she had paid $550 on a $150 court fine--and still owed $541. These examples are necessary but the picture is still incomplete. What if in addition to the DOJ's thorough report into the city's institutions, there was also a separate audit to tally the economic cost of institutional racism?

Ferguson's predation disrupted not just residents' lives but their households', too--but how? How does losing a federal contract for sitting in a parked car on a hot day impact a 32-year-old man and his family?

Sustained police misconduct or abuse isn't only about criminal justice. It's an economic and livelihood issue, too. But the latter is harder to see if there's not also a commensurate accounting of all that the city of Ferguson stole.

Hands-on with the Huawei Watch: The most watch-like smartwatch yet

The Huawei Watch is a nice little smartwatch.

BARCELONA, Spain—Huawei might not be well-known in the US, but behind Apple and Samsung, the Chinese company is currently battling for the #3 smartphone spot with Lenovo and Xiaomi. At Mobile World Congress this year, the company surprised us by taking on the Android Wear smartwatch category, and the result is something that looks really good—easily the best smartwatch of MWC.

The name is refreshingly to-the-point: it's called the "Huawei Watch." The device is the same basic idea as the LG Watch Urbane, but it's executed better. You get a jewelry-style watch with a fully round screen. While the Urbane only has a 1.3-inch 320x320 display, the Huwaei Watch has a 1.4-inch 400x400 display (286 PPI), making it the highest resolution Android Wear device yet. The bezel is smaller than the Urbane, too, and combined with a smaller body, it allows the watch to fit better on more wrists.

The Huawei Watch's body is all metal, and if you opt for a metal band, the clasp will be a real, push-button hidden clasp like what you would get on a real watch. The watch cover is sapphire crystal—the same nigh-unscratchable cover used in a real watch. The internals are pretty normal: a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400, 512MB of RAM, and a 300 mAh battery.

Twin Peaks Newbie Recap: “Laura’s Secret Diary” & “The Orchid’s Curse”

by Jill Pantozzi

TwinPeaksS2Ep11Annnnd we’re back!

Episode 11: “Laura’s Secret Diary”

Leland is being questioned by Agent Cooper and Sheriff Harry but waves his right to an attorney and… admits to killing Jacques, believing he was Laura’s killer. Andy speaks to Dr. Hayward about his sperm, deciding he wants them tested again. And Dr. Hayward asks for a sample Right. Now. So Andy goes to work but runs into Lucy on his way while carrying a copy of Flesh World. And as if that wasn’t great enough, after he produces his simple, it goes flying across the floor when he knocks into someone else.

At the hotel, Benjamin finds out M.T. Wentz, some famous travel writer is coming to Twin Peaks and it’s their job to impress him to get a good write up. But no one knows what he or she looks like. Jean Renault is waiting for Benjamin in his office to show him their “home video” of Audrey and asks for Agent Cooper to bring the ransom to him. Benjamin actually does tell Agent Cooper about Audrey and says the ransom is $125,000.

Hank and Norma find out about this Wentz person too and want to make the R&R look better. Donna meets up with Harold again and he admits to having Laura’s diary. He reads her an entry about Donna. Awkward. She suggests giving it to the Sheriff, he says no, he’s read it cover to cover and anyway. Obviously.

TwinPeaksS2Ep11b copyJosie is back! With tons of new clothes. She mentions Catherine and Peter realizes she doesn’t know she’s “dead.” They still haven’t found a body though. At One Eyed Jacks, Emory and Jean are messing with Audrey and… Jean shoots Emory for being generally annoying? I’m not quite sure but Audrey is too drugged out to do anything about her situation.

At the station Andy and Lucy argue. Agent Cooper suggests letting it all out. They went out for over a year, but took a break, that’s when she went out with Dick. She doesn’t know what she wants, OK! Agent Cooper lets Sheriff Harry in on the situation and asks for a favor. He wants to borrow a Book House Boy. Harry agrees.

A man in a big cowboy hat comes into the R&R, Hank and Nora think he’s Wentz. In another booth, Maddy meets with Donna to talk about what happened with James. Donna tells her about Harold having the secret diary and that they need to steal it. While the man is in the restroom, Hank goes for his wallet and finds an ID which reads Daryl Lodwick, a District Attorney.

Josie shows off some of her new lingerie to Sheriff Harry and she acts offended he suspects her of the arson job. They wind up making time on the couch, she asks him to tear her clothes… and someone is watching at the window!!! It’s the Asian man from the hotel.

Judge Clinton Sternwood shows up at the station and comforts Lucy. Agent Cooper is introduced. Dick shows up to apologize to Lucy during which he gives her a bunch of money for an abortion. She lets him know what she thinks of that idea.

SpikeFuckYou2Leland has to go before the judge who talks about them meeting again in Valhalla after all this nonsense is done. Uhh. Leland wants to represent himself but the prosecutor isn’t there yet so they can’t figure out bail.

The Tri-county Lumber Queen Semifinals are happening at the hotel. LOL. And Wentz has maybe arrived? It’s a person in disguise for sure. Oh my dear god I think it’s Catherine.

TwinPeaksS2Ep11cJosie introduces her cousin “Jonathan” (the Asian man) to Peter who promptly leaves. The two talk about the contract for the mill, Mr. Eckhardt (?) wants to see her in Hong Kong. She’s been on the job for six years. She mentions problem with Hank, he says he’ll take care of it.

At the Roadhouse, Agent Cooper waits for his Book House Boy… who turns out to be Sheriff Harry! Why are they not in a hurry about finding Audrey?? Like seriously. Agent Cooper has now seen the video of her tied up. Make with the haste! At the R&R Hank is woken by a knock, no one there but suddenly, Jonathan! They have a pretty half-assed fight and just when it seems Jonathan has the jump on him he grabs his bloody hand and says, “Blood brother, next time I take your head off.” WHUUUAAAAAA?

Episode 12: “The Orchid’s Curse”

Upon waking, Agent Cooper starts giving Diane notes. He was eating one of his ear plugs while dreaming.

TwinPeaksS2Ep12While doing something upside down, he finally sees Audrey’s note! (Guess he hadn’t had housekeeping in at all since he was shot.) Basically it says she went to Jacks. Hawk returns saying no one at the lake remembered a grey haired man. Lucy is going to visit her sister Gwen, who just had a baby. A temp is supposed to cover for her but is nowhere to be found. Agent Cooper tells Sheriff Harry he knows where Audrey is.

At Leo’s a salesman is explaining adaptive equipment to Shelley and Bobby. The man, Pinkle, seems to be in on the scam with him. And while Shelley and Bobby are out of the room, he gets attacked by his own power lift. The pre-trial hearing is at… the Roadhouse?? Why not at town hall? DA Daryl Lodwick states his case, Sheriff Harry speaks on behalf of Leland, and Andy is drawing a courtroom sketch of the back of Leland’s head. Leland released but told to remain in town.

Donna brings a meal to Harold and says she’ll tell him her life story if she can read Laura’s diary. He suggests reading it to her instead so it doesn’t leave his house. OMG HE HAS A SECRET DRAWER IN HIS BOOKCASE!!!!!!!! He keeps all the info on everyone he talks to there.

TwinPeaksS2Ep12b

“No.”

CREEPY CREEPY CREEPY. She mentions her dad delivered her but tries diverting attention away from herself by asking him where he’s from. He tells her he grew up in Boston. She suddenly grabs the diary from him and says she’s going to take it outside, trying to lure him out too. He steps out and has a seizure or some kind of fit.

In court on another case, evidence of Leo’s brain activity is presented, citing minimal activity. Lodwick wants a trial for Laura’s murder. Agent Cooper, Sheriff Harry, and the Judge have a side meeting at the bar. Judge decides no trial and Leo should be sent home. Reminder that Agent Cooper has only been in town 12 days which seems unbelievable.

Nadine is home from the hospital and still thinks she’s in high school. We find out Jacoby is recuperating in Hawaii. Nadine goes to get drinks from the fridge and PULLS THE DOOR RIGHT OFF LIKE SHE’S SHE-HULK.

TwinPeaksS2Ep12cBenjamin meets with the man he previously thought was Wentz but who introduces himself as Mr. Tajomora (?). I’m more convinced than ever it’s Catherine as they go on to explain they represent some Asian investment firm who wants to purchase the land for $5 million. Bobby has followed Hank there as well and Agent Cooper arrives to take the call from Jean.

Maddy and Donna plan to break into Harold’s to get the diary from his secret shelf. At One Eyed Jacks, Jean is getting strapped to an Auto-Stabber 3000. At the station, still no temp, so Andy is taking down messages on many post-it notes. He calls the doc and finds out his sperm is fine again! Agent Cooper and Sheriff Harry go over a map of Jacks when Hawk arrives to let them know he still can’t find the One Armed Man but found more drugs at the place he was staying. Hawk also looks really sad to be left out of their secret plans.

At the R&R Maddy is trying to get coffee to go and James is there. He follows her because she’s acting super suspicious. Donna is already at Harold’s telling him a story about her and Laura hanging out with a few older guys. Harold shows Donna his orchids. They kiss.

BuffyGrossHe excuses himself. Donna gives the signal.

Meanwhile, Agent Cooper and Sheriff Harry sneak up to Jacks and… the owls are watching! Harry what the shit?! He grabs the guard’s balls, puts in a ball in his mouth, and covers with tape. Jean and Blackly plan to kill Audrey with an overdose of drugs, Hank is watching them.

Agent Cooper has split off from him and grabs Blacky’s sister Nancy who takes him to Audrey. There’s a quick struggle, he knocks her out, and then he cuts Audrey loose. While Hank is keeping watch he sees Jean kill Blacky with his Auto-Stabber 3000! He then immediately sees Hank, shoots at him, misses, and disappears.

Agent Cooper and Sheriff Harry make a run for it when they find themselves blocked by another guard… come on HAWK! HAWK! HAWK!

YESSSSSSSS!

YESSSSSSSS!

He saves the day! Hank sees them leave, calls Benjamin to tell him but Jean catches him while he still has the DA identification. So that should be fun to try and wriggle out of next time.

Maddy is having issues finding the secret drawer and makes too much noise. Harold sees. He runs at them and asks, “Want to know the ultimate secret? Laura wanted to know. The secret of knowing who killed you.” Annnnnd drags a garden tool down his face. Oh dear.

Samantha Bee Will Host New Show On TBS That Is Not The Daily Show - Oh! Innnteresting.

by Victoria McNally
firehose

huh!

ds_17057_03_16x9

Despite many late night TV fans declaring Daily Show correspondent Samantha Bee a shoe-in to host the show after Jon Stewart leaves—and despite a vaguely worded tweet about good news that left her Twitter followers speculating wildly—Bee announced today that she will actually be joining her husband Jason Jones in creating a new comedy series for TBS instead. Hoo boy, these are some mixed emotions I’m feeling.

Right now it’s not 100% definite whether it will be a topical late night show similar to the one she and Jones have both worked on for years, but given that it’s “being planned as a platform for Bee to apply her smart and satirical point of view to current and relevant issues” according to the press release, we’re guessing that late night is precisely what the network has in mind. Bee hosting her own show of this kind would be great for diversity in television—which as we all know is not doing so well latelyespecially in late night—but given that TBS is a relatively bit player in the late night landscape, I do sort of wish that she’d gotten the gig somewhere else. Although hey, maybe this will be the show that boosts TBS’s cred?

Jones and Bee also recently announced plans for a new 10-episode scripted comedy series that they will executive produce together, making this the second show the pair has developed for the channel. “We actually have their kids coming in next week to pitch us animation,” joked Brett Weitz, executive vice president of original programming for the channel. Man, I know you’re not serious, but I bet those kids are hilarious.

So that leaves one question—with both and Jessica Williams out of the running, now who’s our top pick for possible female Daily Show anchor? Kristin Schaal? Rachel Harris? Olivia Munn? Sarah Vowell from that one time? Somebody who hasn’t corresponded for the show before?

Variety reports that 72-year-old actor Harrison Ford has been seriously injured in a plane crash. Ford, who is an avid pilot and has apparently crashed more than once in the past—all relatively minor incidents—was rushed to the hospital after his vintage two-seater fighter plane crashed into a golf course in Venice, California earlier today. He reportedly walked away from the crash, and was treated for head injuries by two doctors who happened to be at the scene.

UPDATE: NBC reports that the injuries, which included head lacerations and possible fractures, while originally described as “critical,” are “better characterized as serious.” We’ll update with more details as they come.

UPDATE, 6:07 p.m.: The Guardian reports that the cause of the crash was mechanical failure of the plane, a Ryan PT-22 Recruit.

#TBT: The One Native Person to Ever Grace Paper Money in the U.S.

by Aura Bogado
#TBT: The One Native Person to Ever Grace Paper Money in the U.S.

It's Throwback Thursday, and today we're gonna take you back more than 100 years to illustrate a little-known part of paper money history.

In 1899, the U.S. Mint issued a $5 silver note that features Hankupapa Lakota Chief Running Antelope. It remains the only paper currency that includes a Native American in the history of money in the United States:

03-05-15-running-antelope-2.jpg

The note is still available as a collector's item on eBay, where it sells for anywhere between $500 to $10,000, depending on the day and on the quality of the bill. Over at Treasured Stocks, there's a short biography about Running Antelope, along with the cringeworthy rumor that the chief was made to wear a Pawnee headdress rather than a Lakota one:

This note shows, as its center and central figure, the image of brave Chief Running Antelope who became Head Chief of the Hunkpapa in 1851. He was born in South Dakota in 1821 and raised in native traditional skills and values. As diplomat, communicator, and warrior Chief Running Antelope was a friend and advisor to Chief Sitting Bull during the Plains Indian conflicts. He believed, however, that native nations should compromise with not fight against whites. If you are looking at a Chief Silver Certificate you are looking at a picture of the only American Indian to be featured on US Currency. The engraved picture is not without controversy, however. The story is that Chief Running Antelope is shown wearing a Pawnee head dress, not Hunkpapa, because the one the Chief actually wore was too tall for the engraving. Another version of that story is that the Chief was told to wear the Pawnee head dress during the photographic session which he adamantly refused to do. Either way, the head dress show on his head is Pawnee.

But, as Thomas King writes in his book, "The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America," it's not exactly clear whether Running Antelope is wearing a Lakota or Pawnee headdress.

What is clear is that the bill went out of circulation shortly after it was first issued. More than 100 years later, Running Antelope remains the only Native to ever appear on paper this country's paper money. Meanwhile Andrew Jackson--the president who oversaw the Indian Removal Act that resulted in the Trail of Tears--has been on the $20 bill for 87 years.

The yet-to-be-named kits, and their mother, are in perfect health and adjusting very well. The duo recently made their public debut and can now be seen, on exhibit, with their parents, at the Zoo.

Father of the kits, Barkley, was paired with Sophie through the Species Survival Plan (SSP) program, as a recommended breeding pair. Barkley arrived at the Chattanooga Zoo from the St. Louis Zoo in October 2014. The genetics that Sophie and Barkley hold are rare and highly valuable in the Zoo’s breeding pool. The breeding pair quickly became fond of each other, and they are now considered an SSP success story.

More awesome pics, below the fold!

We recently wrote about a substitute teacher in Columbus, Ohio who was convicted of a felony—four counts of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, specifically—after showing the horror anthology film The ABCs Of Death to a series of five high-school Spanish classes.

At the time, lawyers for Sheila Kearns, the substitute in question, argued that she had no idea what the movie was about and simply showed it because she thought it was in Spanish (as three out of the 26 segments are). They also said she had her back turned to the TV and didn’t see the sex and violence unfolding on the screen. Basically, they argued that she was bad at her job. The idea that putting someone in jail for showing a commercially available movie that any of Kearns’ students could have bought on Amazon, no matter how distasteful the judge found the content of ...

Over the last year or so, German street artist 1010 (previously) created several of his fantastic spray paint portals in locations around Germany, Panama, and the United States. 1010 brings surprising layers of depth to drab facades and blank gallery walls by painting concentric layers of color. The artist most recently had a solo show at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco titled Limbus. You can see more over on Juxtapoz and on Facebook.
