Sam Lipsyte writes fiction for The New Yorker, and is the author of acclaimed literary novels The Ask and The Fun Parts. But his writing career started, he says in this video interview with Vol. 1 Brooklyn, with a frustrated urge to be a dungeon master in Dungeons & Dragons. This is a fascinating look at the geeky past of a writer who has never written a genre book — but was nevertheless inspired by fantasy role playing games. More »
In a casting notice that also sounds like a pretty good group who’s welcome to party with us anytime, Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Zach Galifianakis, and Naomi Watts have all joined the upcoming Birdman. Fittingly, the dark comedy will be directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, who's known for wrangling big ensemble pieces like 21 Grams and Babel—both already the Cannonball Runs of our era, though this film will reportedly be even lighter. In it, Keaton takes on the self-referential role of a former actor who's famous for playing an iconic superhero, and whose bid for career revival somehow doesn’t include starring in a movie where he clones himself multiple times—even though that would be hilarious—but rather mounting a Broadway adaptation of a Raymond Carver story.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, things then quickly go awry due to the demands of the ...

Silver Nemesis: I’m a good girl. I do what I’m told.
So maybe I am watching different shows from the rest of you because I fail to see how Moffat is sexist.
I think he writes brilliant female characters. What exactly has he done to River Song, Amy Pond and Irene Adler to make you all bitch and complain so much? Honestly, I really am curious.Mostly? Taken away their agency.
Amy spends the first half of series 6 as an incubator for the Doctor’s future wife. She doesn’t have any choice in the matter — she doesn’t even know she’s pregnant until she goes into labour. That’s horrifying, though you’d never know from how cavalier Amy is about it. Then her baby is taken from her, and the story barely even allows her to grieve. She gets evicted from the TARDIS by the Doctor, rather than choosing to leave on her own (which would be MORE than justified at this point).
River’s story in s6 made sure that her life literally revolved around the Doctor from conception until death. From conception, until death. She’s kidnapped as a child because of the Doctor, brainwashed (and let’s face it, probably abused) and trained to kill him, which she does, but then she gives up all her regenerations to save him. She studies archaeology to find him. She’s forced into the suit as an adult again in order to kill him, and then he marries her so that he can “request” she fake his murder and take the blame for it, spending years of her life imprisoned for a crime she didn’t commit. Eventually, she gives up her last remaining life for his.
Irene Adler is a smart and capable woman who describes herself as gay and yet falls for Sherlock so hard that she decides to make her all-important “I’d die before relinquishing this” password his name, because of some kind of crush. It’s not that she has a crush — it’s that that crush and her ~emotions get the better of her and nearly lead to her death. Irene, the woman famous in the ACD canon for being “the woman who beat him”, is bested by Sherlock in the end (he cracks the password) and has her life saved by him, while she, the dominatrix, kneels helplessly in the face of her death.
There are lots of other things, including Moffat’s own tendency to say dumb shit during interviews and on Twitter, but since you asked specifically what he’d done to Amy, River and Irene to make people complain, there’s the big one. It’s not usually the characters people dislike, it’s how those characters are treated within the story, and how much agency/control over their life and stories those characters are given, and whether or not those characters have stories unto themselves or they exist solely to do something for the male protagonist. Obviously not everyone is going to agree with the all of the above. But you said you were curious, so that’s where many of the criticisms come from.

Samsung’s presence in the US is expanding on every front, from its huge smartphone sales numbers to its planned 1.1 million square foot campus in Silicon Valley. Now Bloomberg reports that it’s done the same thing in Washington, boosting its lobbying spend from $150,000 in 2011 to $900,000 in 2012.
"A prudent step as part of day-to-day business operations."
So why the increase? The $598 million in damages that Samsung is being ordered to pay Apple in the US no doubt figure into the equation, but so does its growing US presence and a general trend toward more lobbying spending by major tech companies. Samsung says that the increase is "a prudent step as part of day-to-day business operations" and its "commitment to transparency." And while it’s a big increase, $900,000 is still only half of what Apple spent, and small potatoes compared to Google and Microsoft, which paid out $8.1 million and $18.2 million respectively last year.

With Google's annual I/O conference just over a couple of months away, the company has already begun to tease it online. Ahead of event registration, which opens on March 13th at 10AM ET, Google's I/O website features an interactive logo that can be "programmed" to return some amusing results.
It's a little easier than real coding — an indicator at the bottom of the screen flashes red or green to let you know if you're on the right track — but that doesn't mean you won't sink minutes into working out how to show the cat pictures below. We won't spoil anything else, but if you manage to turn up something cool, let us know in the comments.

Now that he’s retired from filmmaking, George Lucas wants to build a museum in San Francisco’s Presidio region to house his substantial art collection. Last week, the Star Wars creator handed a 20-page proposal for the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum in to the Presidio Trust, which manages the area in partnership with the National Park Service. The news was reported in SFGate.
Lucas already has a major presence in the Presidio
Lucas already has a major presence in the Presidio — Industrial Light and Magic and LucasArts are located in its Letterman Digital Arts Center, which was also developed by the filmmaker. The proposed museum would house Lucas’s extensive collection of works by Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parish, comic art, and, naturally, props and concepts from the Star Wars films. There would also be space dedicated to animation and visual effects. The museum is expected to cost $250 to $300 million to build, which Lucas would pay out of pocket, along with two separate $400 million endowments paid when the museum opens and when he dies.

From Wacom's official Facebook page:
Wacom's promise of a device with an HD display and multi-touch would deliver a device more powerful (and potentially, more useful) than Wacom's current entry-level pen display, the Cintiq 12WX, which has no touch screen functions and bears a native resolution of 1280 x 800 vs. the much higher pixel densities found on tablets with proper HD and retina displays. Wacom's larger and more expensive Cintiqs do offer HD, but the only model that currently offers touch capabilities - the Cintiq 24HD Touch - retails for about $3,700 and contains no operating system or software of its own. All Wacom products are, in essence, monitors that rely on interfacing with existing computers rather than independent devices, keeping them all from being "on-the-go" to the extent that modern tablets are. We've heard you shouting out loud for a Wacom mobile tablet for creative uses. Well... we're listening. We've read your email and spoken to many about an on-the-go dream device. It will come. This summer. We're working 24/7 on it. And yes, it has a real pressure-sensitive professional pen, smooth multi-touch, an HD display, and other valuable features that you haven't seen in other tablets.
Would-be users are already responding to Wacom's social media postings with a wish-list of features and capabilities they'd like to see on the "dream device," including a long-lasting battery, a textured screen, PC/Mac connectivity and interface options, pre-installed software and, perhaps most importantly, a competitive price tag.
Considering Wacom has just discounted its Cintiq 12WX by 25 percent "for a limited time," the company may be looking to move a new product into its roughly $1,000 price bracket. If this potential new tablet does wind up in that price range, those used to spending $500-930 for an iPad or $900 to $1000 on the Surface Pro shouldn't have to sneeze at the potentially viable new illustration tool. If not, many comic book artists and cartoonists may stick with their current digital art tools or turn to competitors such as Yiynova for more affordable alternatives.

Submitting to ComiXology requires a user account (the same one users already have set up to buy content) and specified digital files. Creators who submit comics through ComiXology will retain full ownership of their works.
ComiXology notes that its approval process is still a work in progress, but that "First and foremost, we want to maintain a level of professional content that comiXology users have come to expect from our platform. What the definition of professional content is will certainly be something that we refine as we progress into this brave new world."
After being approved, comics are formatted for standard and ComiXology's patent-pending Guided View format, which gives readers the ability to read material panel-by-panel.
Following formatting, comics will appear in the ComiXology store with prices set by the creator (although "free" is not currently an option).
From there, ComiXology splits the profit from all sales 50/50 "after subtracting any standard fees charged by the payment processors," with said fees currently listed as running between 8-30 percent, depending on whether the content is sold directly through ComiXology's site or through Apple's iOS devices, which take an additional cut.
According to Comixology's FAQ, payments will be made by check or Automated Clearing House transfer 45 days from the end of each financial quarter as long as a given release meets a minimum total accrued payment of $100. Minimums that aren't met roll over into subsequent quarters until a book makes at least $100.
As yet, it's unknown how long the vetting process will take or how exactly approved submissions will be integrated into the main site. In the meantime, ComiXology is spotlighting a select list of independent creators and their comics on the Submit page as an example of what the end-result of the process will look like.

I wanted to play HarmoKnight before reading this Iwata Asks, but now that I’ve read it, and seen the super cute design documents, I’ve developed a case of the frothing demands.
In the interview, Game Freak executive director Junichi Masuda revealed that the eShop rhythm action game was developed under a program where employees put a small percent of their work time into a project of their own choosing. “We have structured things so that if you come up with an idea for a game, you can write a proposal for it;if you can then get two other people to support it, you will be given three months to make it.” After three months, if it’s going well, three more months are granted.
This Google-esque structure seems surprisingly progressive for a company like Game Freak, which I would think of as a very traditional Japanese game company (and one with one important franchise it has to support on the reg). And the result is this neat-looking eShop game!

After getting into a bit of a flame war with David Bowie over his upcoming reissue of “The Last Of The International Playboys,” Morrissey has responded with the clever rebuttal of so many an Internet wit: He’s gone for the ol' Rickroll, replacing that disputed, previously unpublished cover photo of Bowie and himself with the above image featuring Rick Astley, taken backstage at a 1989 Top Of The Pops taping. No doubt happy just to be a part of something that isn't expressly intended to annoy, Astley has already signed off on the use of his likeness, while his meaty baritone somehow escaped Morrissey’s withering condemnation and earned him a spot on the single due April 8. And after this it should just be smooooooth sailing for Morrissey, from here on out.
