Everything Wrong With ‘Superman: The Movie’ In 5 Minutes Or Less

by Justin Page

this fuckin' movie

Superman is a dick to footballs.

For their ongoing series, CinemaSins has released a new video that reveals “Everything Wrong With Superman: The Movie In 5 Minutes Or Less.” This was created in honor of the upcoming June 14th release of Man of Steel in theaters.

After listing the sins of ‘Superman Returns’ last week, we thought it only fair to go back in time several decades and point the sin counter at one of the most beloved of all superhero movies: Superman The Movie. The year, 1978. The star, Christopher Reeve. The sins… not as plentiful.

paizo.com - Pathfinder Adventure Path #69: Maiden, Mother, Crone (Reign of Winter 3 of 6)

by gguillotte
firehose

yo can we talk about this bullshit

I mean it's one thing for games to lean toward Western misogyny and homophobia and other such bullshit--writers, editors, artists, and audience are all overwhelmingly straight white men. I get that SKR especially and Paizo in general have at least a public desire to change that and do "interesting" things like publicly retcon homosexuality and transgenderism into iconics, "edgy" "flip-the-script" things like casting the Arab cultures as oppressive _matriarchies_ instead of oppressive _patriarchies_, yada yada

but come on. seriously? this is the misogyny AP (no seriously, one of the creatures in this one's bestiary is called "misogyny demon") and it includes
- a nice big section with everything you need to play a character whose religion is hating women (written by SKR!)
- the "misogyny demons" are actually misandry demons (their dream is to gang "torture" female demons into submission: 'If given the opportunity, an andrazku would capture and torture a succubus merely because she is female (though a succubus is physically more powerful than a lone misogyny demon, and the hairy brutes have to gang up to have any chance of defeating a "weakling" succubus)' )
- btw did I mention that female demons love having these misandry demons around as servants, because when you're a woman what could be better than surrounding yourself with and relying on men who want to "gang up" to "defeat" you
- the main foil of the issue is a beautiful woman who fears being turned into a disgusting hag (although hey, the only art of a hag in the book is a hot skinny purple woman with horns)
- said beautiful woman has a trans M-to-F lover (yay) who courted her by never leaving her alone despite being constantly rebuffed (boo) but she's imprisoned in an irrational jealous fit (boo) because of a naked nymph (GFY) who we know is naked because we get full-body quarter-page art of the naked nymph (GFY) and the PCs' only interactions with the lover are to mercy-kill her and risk the mission ("Marislova begs for execution rather than a return to her imprisonment") or free her and risk the mission ("If Jadrenka discovers that the PCs have entered her lover's room or helped Marislova escape, she becomes agitated and angry. Regardless of the PCs' previous interactions with her, Jadrenka's attitude changes to unfriendly"), and the path developer suggests the M-to-F change is actually a magical side-effect of the location (http://paizo.com/products/btpy8xbz/discuss&page=3?Pathfinder-Adventure-Path-69-Maiden-Mother-Crone#124 and GFY)
- btw the naked nymph's three sons are constantly trying to rape her
- about every five paragraphs of the actual boring-ass dungeon crawl that's the actual adventure contains a nude woman
- this shit happens:

'Kostchtchie's father found solace in drinking, and when the drunkard's wife accidentally spilled his last keg, he flew into a stumbling rage. Too drunk to sate his anger, the man ordered Kostchtchie to murder his mother in punishment for the mishap, and then his sisters when they tried to stop him. After carrying out his grim deed, Kostchtchie felt nothing but contempt at his father for being too drunk and weak to do his own killing, so he murdered him as well

...

HOLIDAYS
Worshipers of Kostchtchie honor the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. On this day, they make elaborate battle plans and schemes for vengeance to be enacted during the coming year. Traditionally, they sacrifice one or more witches on this day, or the lowest-ranking female of the tribe if no witches are available.

COMMANDMENTS
As Kostchtchie's followers are ordinary people pushed into extraordinary circumstances, many of the faith's common phrases are used to inspire determination.

...

Bow to No Woman: Women serve no purpose but to pleasure men and give birth to warriors. Accepting a woman as a superior means you place yourself in a position of weakness. Cry out in rage or laughter, but never pain. Screaming in pain is something women and children may do, but a man bears his wounds with dignity and honor. Even a frail man is more worthy of respect than a strong woman.

Kill All Witches: Men live by strength, whether in thew, prayer, or blood. Witchcraft is women's magic, a vile thing taught in secret by hags and harridans. If you have the opportunity to kill a witch, do so before her magic saps your manhood. If you are outmatched by a witch and cannot attack, gather allies and strike when you can kill.

...

Given his hatred of women, he has very few female demons in his service, and most of them are similarly deformed and altered. For example, a succubus of Kostchtchie may be a fat, bandy-legged crone in her true form, and a marilith's upper half may be more apelike than humanoid.'

-here's one of the monsters:
"Svathurim males outnumber females by a wide margin, and these creatures are indiscriminate in their mating habits. The rare svathurim mares are little more selective in their affections than the males, and there is no shortage of males willing to court them. Ironically, many adult male svathurim are killed or wounded in competition for the attentions of females, either maimed and driven off by more dominant males or slain and presented as a trophy to prove worthiness to a female. Female svathurim are never monogamous, though, as mating with many males confuses the issue of parentage enough to keep their offspring safe from the predations of many adult males, lest a male inadvertently eradicate a foal svathurim that may be his own flesh and blood."

Friday WTF?: Whole Foods Says Speaking Spanish Is “Unsafe” For Its Working Environment

by Andrea

Whole Foods

Whole Foods, the grocery-store signifier of the “personal is political” and social responsibility, has been busted for some sketchy business practices antithetical to its progressive hype, like union-busting as well as maintaining low wages and failing to support farmworkers.

Let’s add language surveillance to that list. From NBC Latino:

Two employees at a Whole Foods Market store in Albuquerque say they were suspended last month after complaining about being told they couldn’t speak Spanish to each other while on the job.

Bryan Baldizan told The Associated Press he and a female employee were suspended for a day after they wrote a letter following a meeting with a manager who told them Spanish was not allowed during work hours.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Baldizan, who works in the store’s food preparation department. “All we did was say we didn’t believe the policy was fair. We only talk Spanish to each other about personal stuff, not work.”

He said Whole Foods officials told them about company policy and issued the suspensions.

Ben Friedland, Whole Foods Market Rocky Mountain Region Executive Marketing Coordinator, said the Austin, Texas-based company believes in “having a uniform form of communication” for a safe working environment.

“Therefore, our policy states that all English speaking Team Members must speak English to customers and other Team Members while on the clock,” Friedland said in a statement. “Team Members are free to speak any language they would like during their breaks, meal periods and before and after work.”

Friedland said the policy doesn’t prevent employees from speaking Spanish to customers who don’t speak English nor does it prevent them from speaking Spanish if all “parties present agree that a different language is their preferred form of communication.”

Whole Foods Market spokeswoman Libba Letton told the AP that in addition to safety reasons, the policy is in place so employees who don’t speak Spanish don’t feel uncomfortable.

Google buys traffic mapping service Waze

by Adrianne Jeffries
firehose

"talks with Facebook fell through because Waze insisted that its 110 employees remain in Israel. Google has one large office in Tel Aviv and a second in the nearby port city of Haifa, meaning Waze employees can stay right where they are"

Google has acquired the mapping service Waze, a Google Maps competitor that relies on user data to build accurate maps with real-time traffic reports. Both Facebook and Apple reportedly considered buying it, and the negotiations with Google were first leaked three weeks ago. Google declined to name the purchase price, which was reported to be as high as $1.3 billion.

That may seem like a premium for a company with just 28 million users, but the deal is largely a defensive play as Google moves to preserve its dominance in mobile mapping. There aren't many companies with mapping databases as good as Waze's, said Carolina Milanesi, a consumer technology analyst at Gartner. Waze would also have been a strategic acquisition for Facebook, Apple, or Nokia, she said. "Google is not leaving it on the plate for Apple or Facebook to buy," she said. "They're staying ahead of the game and being able to continue to be the leader in the maps space."

"Owning context is what matters."

Waze also uses crowdsourcing to add context that many other mapping applications don't have. Drivers can upload information about traffic accidents, construction, gas prices, and detours, adding photos and flagging problem spots on the map to alert other drivers. The app also lets users see when their friends are driving to a common destination.

"Owning context is what matters," Milanesi said. "It's not giving you turn-by-turn directions. It's about knowing where you are, who you're with, adding location and social together and making it very powerful from an application perspective, but also monetizable from an advertising perspective. So that's right at the core of what Google's business is."

Waze has been gaining attention for a while now. Investor interest jumped 238 percent from the last quarter of 2012 to the first quarter of 2013, according to Second Market, the marketplace for buying startup stock. Judging by Google's track record with similar acquisitions, the company will likely cherry-pick bits of Waze to add to Google Maps and eventually deactivate the Israeli service.

"We’re excited about the prospect of enhancing Google Maps with some of the traffic update features provided by Waze and enhancing Waze with Google’s search capabilities," Google said today in an announcement that emphasized Waze's strong user community and the accuracy and timeliness of its data.

The Israeli business newspaper Globes reported that talks with Facebook fell through because Waze insisted that its 110 employees remain in Israel. Google has one large office in Tel Aviv and a second in the nearby port city of Haifa, meaning Waze employees can stay right where they are. There is just one possible obstacle to the deal: some attorneys have speculated that because of Google's leadership with mapping services a Waze acquisition could trigger an antitrust investigation from the US Department of Justice or regulators abroad.

Senators propose bill to declassify orders behind NSA spying

by Carl Franzen
firehose

Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Al Franken (D-MN), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Mike Lee (R-UT), Dean Heller (R-NV), Mark Begich (D-AK), Jon Tester (D-MT)

both of Oregon's senators <3

A bipartisan group of eight prominent US Senators announced a new bill today to declassify the court opinions that give the US National Security Agency the legal power to carry out the sweeping internet surveillance program known as PRISM and the separate phone records surveillance program, both revealed last week by leaked documents. “Americans deserve to know how much information about their private communications the government believes it’s allowed to take under the law," said Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), the architect of the bill, a version of which he originally introduced last December, but which failed to gain traction at the time.

Takes aim at the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court

Now that surveillance is back in the news in a big way, Merkley is trying again to pass his bill, getting the backing of seven of his colleagues, including prominent privacy-advocating Senators Al Franken (D-MN), Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT). Republican Senators Mike Lee (R-UT) and Dean Heller (R-NV) are also endorsing the bill. The bill specifically targets the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), the secret legal system set up in 1978 that issues classified orders requiring companies to hand over information as part of investigations into foreign threats, including suspected terrorist plotters.

The NSA last week released a statement saying that its PRISM internet surveillance program was legal under FISC orders issued under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), the same law that created this court system. The NSA also claims that its separate surveillance program on phone caller data is also legal thanks to FISC orders issued under Section 215 of the Patriot Act. However, most of the FISC court opinions behind both of these programs are classified until far in the future — the public only found out about the NSA's phone data surveillance of Verizon customers last week when the Guardian published a leaked FISC Section 215 court order well ahead of its declassification date of 2038. Merkley's bill would require the government to declassify these court opinions now, not far in the future. But getting the rest of Congress to back the bill may still prove challenging, given that other lawmakers have come out in support of these NSA surveillance efforts, and that Congress repeatedly authorized them.

America’s improving economy is lousy news for Apple bond holders

by Leo Mirani
firehose

lol

Apple’s 30-year bonds have lost nearly a tenth of their value in the six weeks since they were issued.

It’s been six weeks to the day since Apple set records with the biggest corporate bond issue ever. The $17 billion worth of bonds of varying maturities were oversubscribed by a factor of three. Investors loved the mix of security and, at the time, decent rates.

It’s pretty obvious why companies—not just Apple—were rushing to issue bonds: Rates were around historic lows, allowing them to borrow incredibly cheaply. Apple’s 30-year bonds were issued at just 3.85% per year on a day when Treasury notes were going at 2.88%.

The problem with historically low interest rates, of course, is that they can’t stay that low forever. In the past few weeks there have been several encouraging signals for the American economy. Employment figures beat expectations in April and May. Ben Bernanke suggested the Fed might take it easy on quantitative easing “in the next few meetings.” Even S&P seems to believe the US is improving. All this is reflected in expectations that the Fed will soon let interest rates rise, which has led to higher yields and lower prices (yields and prices move in opposite directions) on US Treasurys, and, correspondingly, on corporate bonds.

None of which is a big deal for anybody who plans to hold the 30-year bonds for 30 years. But for everybody else, that means they can’t get rid of the stuff fast enough: The price of Apple’s 30-year bonds—long term bonds are most sensitive to rising rates—has fallen to 90.33% of their face value, or par in bondspeak. We don’t think the bond rout will last, but for the time being, those other two-thirds of wannabe Apple bond-buyers must be pretty pleased with themselves.

Comcast's new DVR ditches the hard drive, stores your recordings in the cloud

by Dan Seifert
firehose

what could possibly go wrong

Comcast has just announced the X2, the latest version of its cloud-connected X1 entertainment platform. X2 uses the new XI3 DVR, which uses cloud storage for your recorded shows — in fact it doesn't even have a hard drive for local storage. The box itself is three times smaller and uses 50 percent less energy as a result, and you can now access your recorded shows from a variety of devices, including smartphones and tablets. The XI3 is also said to be four times faster than the typical cable box in use today.

The new X2 platform offers a number of enhancements over Comcast's existing X1 service, including personalized home screens that sync across your TV and apps on mobile devices, more recommendations for new shows and content, the ability to start watching on demand content on one device and then continue it on another, and social integration. Comcast is also upgrading its existing X1 service today to support web video, enabling customers to send video content from their PC or mobile device to their X1 set top box for viewing on TV. It's essentially Comcast's version of Apple's AirPlay feature.

The path to move your recorded shows from the cable box in your living room to the cloud for easy access has been pretty difficult for cable companies to navigate. Cablevision spent years in court fighting broadcasters for the right to move the recordings to its own servers, with the Supreme Court eventually electing not to hear the case, giving Cablevision a victory by default. Cablevision announced last year that it would launch its own cloud-based DVR service to all of its customers following a trial run in a handful of markets.

Comcast still only has its X1 service available in 12 markets, with recent expansion to include Washington DC. The X2 platform is scheduled to launch later this year, but its not clear exactly how many markets it will be available in at that time.

Playstation 4 Is Better Than Xbox One In Every Way

'The demand for the Xbox One's new software features — like Skype video calls on the side of your screen while you're watching live TV — is unproven, and yet Microsoft is asking a mainstream audience to pay five times the price of an Apple TV. Without much focus on its media functionality, the PS3 quietly became the most popular device for Netflix streaming last year.'

The PlayStation 4, while perhaps a more conventional product, appears to beat the Xbox One in just about every area that counts.

Sleeping German banker accidentally transfers €222,222,222.22

by Jake Maxwell Watts
SleepingonDesk

At least he didn’t fall asleep on the “9″ key.

A German labor court ruled on Monday that a bank supervisor was unfairly dismissed for failing to notice that one of her employees had made a multi-million euro mistake on a transaction. The employee had fallen asleep with his finger on his keyboard while pressing the number two, so instead of transferring €62.40 from a retiree’s bank account, he withdrew €222,222,222.22 ($2.95 million) instead.

Fortunately for the anonymous retiree, the transaction was spotted by another colleague and reversed. A court in Hesse, Germany, ruled that the supervisor should have been reprimanded, not fired, as her mistake was genuine and she had also checked 811 other documents that day.

Apple to boost Twitter #Music with trending iTunes Radio station

by Matt Brian
firehose

amazing innovation

Apple's partnership with Twitter is set to extend into music with the launch of a dedicated Twitter #Music station in iTunes Radio. Apple's new music service, which launched yesterday at WWDC 2013, is built directly inside iOS 7's Music app and will feature trending tracks from Twitter's music discovery and streaming platform, alongside other curated stations.

Following its launch in April, Twitter #Music has struggled to capture the interest of iOS device owners, falling to #83 in iOS' top 100 free music apps. Leveraging Twitter's massive user base and vast amount of data, #Music is easily Twitter's most polished app, but nobody is using it. With the inclusion of a trending station in iTunes Radio, Twitter #Music could enjoy increased visibility without needing to use Spotify or Rdio for track playback — instead it will be able to lean on Apple's deals with the three major music labels.

Apple’s latest creation is a woman named Mieko Haire

In its efforts to show off features of its new mobile operating system software known as iOS 7, Apple has imagined a user to populate a virtual device with typical content. Apple calls that user Mieko Haire, and in marketing tutorials describes her as a young woman who has recently moved to Los Angeles, has a pet, and goes to the beach a lot.

Through its promotional materials, Apple offers some indication of who it is targeting with its products. For the release of iOS 6, it depicting a mother emailing and posting pictures of her children to Facebook using the new system.  The iOS 5 release used the story of a business executive on a camping trip. Its original marketing for the iPad Mini focused on women.

However, it turns out that Mieko Haire is a real person—and so are other people listed in Apple’s marketing materials for iOS 7. She and the others all have worked at Apple. Real Mieko has not responded to requests for comment, but here is what the materials tell us about the marketing character that shares her name:

Mieko Haire’s emails

From Fake Mieko’s emails we learn that she just had a great weekend, has been invited to a surprise birthday party, and has been borrowing a bean bag chair.

Here are  the LinkedIn profiles of some of the Apple employees that share names with the senders of the listed emails: Michelle HumphreyEddy BedockPaul BrennanBlair Lockhart

On June 10, Mieko received five emails in 23 minutes, a pace of 313 emails a day.

Mieko Haire’s texts

Mieko texts with Paul Zemanek about Mieko’s move to Los Angeles and a mutual friend Tasha. According to the narative, Mieko, Paul and Tasha lived in the same dorm.

She’s listening to Daft Punk’s latest album Random Access Memories and is 66 seconds into “Get Lucky,” a moment at the beginning of a chorus in the new track featuring Pharrell Williams.

She did some math, and it equaled 356, or perhaps she mis-typed how many days there are in the year.

Mieko has lists for “Surprise Party” (10 items), “Payments Due” (6 items), “Groceries” (7 items), “Alumni Week” (17 items), and “Beach Trip” (6 items).

Her friend Tiffany appears to live a five hour drive away from Los Angeles in San Francisco. There is no “5th and Mission” in Los Angeles, though in San Francisco that is the location of the Moscone Center—the site for Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference being held this week.

Yesterday, Mieko had to take a pet–named Marty–to the veterinarian, have lunch with Claire, and review a script with Sebastian Bauer.

Real Sebastian’s LinkedIn profile lists him as a senior manager in worldwide marketing communications at Apple.

The photos could be from another friend’s trips and shared with Mieko as Mieko received a notification that photos from “Beach Trip” were shared with her. It is unknown if any of those depicted are supposed to be Mieko.
