I was doing an interview once, and this guy goes, “So you must be pretty psyched about all this ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ stuff?”
And I was like, “Um, yeah, I am.” I have no idea why though. I had nothing to do with that movie. It’s just some people that kind of look like me are in this movie that everyone loves, and winning Oscars and stuff.
And then I was like, “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Are white people just psyched all the time?” It’s, like, “‘Back to the Future’! That’s us! ‘Godfather’! That’s us! ‘Godfather Part II’! That’s us! ‘Departed’! That’s us! ‘Sunset Boulevard’! That’s us! ‘Citizen Kane’! That’s us! ‘Jaws’! That’s us! Every fucking movie but ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘Boyz n the Hood’ is us! We are white people! Suck our dicks!”

Elegant skull ring

I'm always looking for an elegant skull ring and this handcrafted silver-bronze handcrafted specimen from Lost Apostle is a beaut. "Look closely and you'll see each tooth is carved, the jaw bone tucked away behind the zygomatic arch and the nasal bones all beautifully detailed. Even the back of the jaw and teeth are carved, as is the roof of the mouth, showing the palatine bone and nasal aperture." It's $65 from our pals at ShanaLogic. In a dramatic about-face on a key internet issue yesterday, Google told the FCC that the network neutrality rules Google once championed don’t give citizens the right to run servers on their home broadband connections, and that the Google Fiber network is perfectly within its rights to prohibit customers from attaching the legal devices of their choice to its network.
In Lieu of Money, Toyota Donates Efficiency to New York Charity
| Courtney shared this story : | |

James Estrin/The New York Times
Daryl Foriest, director of distribution at the Food Bank’s pantry and soup kitchen in Harlem, was skeptical at first of the Toyota engineers’ efforts. “The line of people waiting to eat is too long,” he told them. “Make the line shorter.” They did. More Photos »
The Food Bank for New York City is the country’s largest anti-hunger charity, feeding about 1.5 million people every year. It leans heavily, as other charities do, on the generosity of businesses, including Target, Bank of America, Delta Air Lines and the New York Yankees. Toyota was also a donor. But then Toyota had a different idea.
Instead of a check, it offered kaizen.
A Japanese word meaning “continuous improvement,” kaizen is a main ingredient in Toyota’s business model and a key to its success, the company says. It is an effort to optimize flow and quality by constantly searching for ways to streamline and enhance performance. Put more simply, it is about thinking outside the box and making small changes to generate big results.
Toyota’s emphasis on efficiency proved transformative for the Food Bank.
At a soup kitchen in Harlem, Toyota’s engineers cut down the wait time for dinner to 18 minutes from as long as 90. At a food pantry on Staten Island, they reduced the time people spent filling their bags to 6 minutes from 11. And at a warehouse in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where volunteers were packing boxes of supplies for victims of Hurricane Sandy, a dose of kaizen cut the time it took to pack one box to 11 seconds from 3 minutes.
Toyota has “revolutionized the way we serve our community,” said Margarette Purvis, the chief executive and president of the Food Bank.
But Toyota’s initial offer to the charity in 2011 was met with apprehension.
“They make cars; I run a kitchen,” said Daryl Foriest, director of distribution at the Food Bank’s pantry and soup kitchen in Harlem. “This won’t work.”
When Toyota insisted it would, Mr. Foriest presented the company with a challenge.
“The line of people waiting to eat is too long,” Mr. Foriest said. “Make the line shorter.”
Toyota’s engineers went to work. The kitchen, which can seat 50 people, typically opened for dinner at 4 p.m., and when all the chairs were filled, a line would form outside. Mr. Foriest would wait for enough space to open up to allow 10 people in. The average wait time could be up to an hour and a half.
Toyota made three changes. They eliminated the 10-at-a-time system, allowing diners to flow in one by one as soon as a chair was free. Next, a waiting area was set up inside where people lined up closer to where they would pick up food trays. Finally, an employee was assigned the sole duty of spotting empty seats so they could be filled quickly. The average wait time dropped to 18 minutes and more people were fed.
The unusual partnership between Toyota and the Food Bank, which one Food Bank coordinator compared to a cultural exchange program, highlights a different way for-profit businesses can help their communities, experts said.
“It’s a form of corporate philanthropy but instead of giving money, they’re sharing expertise,” said David J. Vogel, a professor and an expert in corporate social responsibility at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. “It’s quite new.”
And many nonprofit organizations, facing tighter budgets as financing from federal and local governments diminishes, are having to make smarter business decisions.
“Nonprofit organizations are taking on what happens in the for-profit world because they will run better,” said Ronald P. Hill, a professor of marketing and business law at Villanova University.
In the early 1990s, Toyota limited sharing its expertise to its auto parts suppliers. But as the Toyota Production System Support Center, the company’s headquarters of efficiency, came to recognize broader interest in the Toyota model, the company offered consulting-style services to nonautomotive manufacturers and nonprofit organizations. Today, the center supports about 40 organizations, half of which are small to midsize manufacturers that pay a small fee. The rest are nonprofits, like the Food Bank, that get the services free.
AP settles lawsuit with PR company after winning key fair use ruling
A copyright dispute between the Associated Press and an online news-clipping service, Meltwater News, has ended with a settlement. The parties have agreed to partner up and deliver news products.
"There is more to be gained by working together to develop new markets and reaching new customers than can be achieved through adversarial paths," said Meltwater CEO Jorn Lyseggen. "We are eager to forge a strong relationship with AP."
While the talk is conciliatory, it looks like Meltwater lost this lawsuit. The agreement came after a judge ruled against Meltwater on a key fair use issue in March. While financial terms of the settlement aren't revealed, a "partnership" in this case means the AP is getting paid by the clipping service, whereas before it was not. Meltwater initially said it would appeal, but it appears to have dropped that plan.

'Fiets of Parenthood' event returns this Sunday
firehosevia saucie
meanwhile, in Portland
The Fiets of Parenthood is back for its 4th year and biking families all over the region are getting ready to strut their stuff at a new venue: The Portland Art Museum. As part of their ongoing Cyclepedia: Iconic Bicycle Design exhibition, PAM has partnered with event sponsor Clever Cycles for a "Free Family and Community Day" this Sunday (8/4).
If you're curious about family biking, or if you're already riding with kids in tow and want to connect with other families, this is an event you won't want to miss.
One thing I've noticed from being around families on bikes for many years is that seeing is believing (and inspiring). For many new moms and dads, the idea of biking with small children is overwhelming. There are feelings of fear and intimidation about which type of gear and bike set-up works best. That's what Fiets of Parenthood is all about. It's a place where you can learn, get inspired, and then practice (or show off if you're a veteran) your biking-with-children skills.
Organizers of this year's event bill it as a "a celebration of the family bicycle." They've put together a great program that includes: a family bicycle obstacle race (the main attraction), live music, a family bike showcase, food vendors, a collaborative bike sculpture, and more fun for the whole family. And don't forget, this Sunday you'll get free admission to the entire museum.
Grab the kids and your bikes and head down to the South Park Blocks (SW Park between Jefferson and Madison) between 1:00 and 5:00 pm. For more on Fiets of Parenthood, see our recap and photos from last year's event and check out the official website.

Student abandoned in DEA cell for four days to get $4M from US - NorthJersey.com
firehose'Chong, an engineering student at UC San Diego, went to a house near campus to smoke marijuana with friends and found himself swept up in a DEA raid.
After being questioned briefly at the DEA facility in San Diego, he was told he would be released. But, for reasons that remain unclear, he was left for five days in a 5-by-10-foot windowless room without food, water or toilet facilities.
He suffered hallucinations and was forced to drink his urine to survive. He screamed for help.
Fearing he would die, he broke his glasses and scrawled the message, “Sorry, mom” on his arm.
When he was discovered by DEA employees, he was covered in his own feces and severely dehydrated. He was rushed to a hospital, close to kidney failure and breathing with difficulty. He spent five days in the hospital.'

It took less than two months for Dunkin Donuts to mass-produce the cronut
firehoseliterally Gangnam style

In case you needed more proof of the quickening pace of globalization, look no further than the “cronut.” Within two months, the hybrid pastry created in New York City as a cross between a croissant and a donut has spread around the world.
Bakers and pastry shops are offering imitations and adaptations of the cronut, launched in May by the Dominique Ansel Bakery in downtown Manhattan, in Japan, the Philippines, Australia, Spain, China and the UK, among others. (Because Ansel has filed a trademark for the term “cronut,” imitators use other names. For example, one bakery in London calls its version the “dosant.”)
In South Korea, an adaptation of Ansel’s recipe is now being offered by a global donut and coffee chain, rather than a local baker or domestic pastry chain. A Dunkin Donuts spokesman told Quartz that the chain introduced the “New York Pie Donut” this past weekend. Dunkin Donuts also launched a “Donut Croissant” in Manila a few weeks ago but has no plans to introduce them in the US right now. In South Korea, the pastries are being sold in the high-end Seoul neighborhood of Gangnam, as well as Jamsil and Myungdong.

Dunkin Donuts’ operations in South Korea are part of its overall global expansion to beat out other mamoth coffee chains like Starbucks. Dunkin Donuts has just over 3,000 stores outside the US. In South Korea, the company has built an image of being an exotic, somewhat high-brow Western donut shop. The chain has created a localized menu (example: the kimchi donut) and smartphone apps for the country’s digitally wired populace.
As is the case with New York cronuts, locals in Seoul are enduring long lines to get their hands on South Korea’s version. (A Dunkin Donuts representative for South Korea was not available for comment.) According to one comment on the Facebook page for Dunkin Donuts South Korea, customers were limited to two of the pastries per person:

1. Identify your personal values, or guiding principles. Nick Tasler has a free self-assessment that sheds light on the relative importance of different values.
2. Hone in on your strengths. My students love the Reflected Best Self-Portrait exercise, which involves inviting 15-20 people to write a story about you when you were at your best, and then creating a portrait about the common themes and patterns.
3. Draw a Venn diagram with three overlapping circles – values, strengths, and interests – and look for a career that fits in the center.
4. Set up a personal board of directors – a group of mentors who you admire and trust – who can provide feedback and share novel perspectives about possible career paths.
5. If all else fails, there are some thought-provoking books that offer valuable advice. My students often recommend So Good They Can’t Ignore You by Cal Newport, The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz, and The Start-up of You by Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha.
