Harsh words from Pope Francis: Earth looks “like an immense pile of filth.”

by Svati Kirsten Narula
Admonishment heard round the world.

No need to read all 180 pages of Pope Francis’s encyclical (PDF), which was leaked earlier this week and formally released today. The main ideas about climate change, echoing concerns expressed in previous papal encyclicals, are also available in neat, 140-character excerpts via @Pontifex on Twitter.

The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth.

— Pope Francis (@Pontifex) June 18, 2015

Climate change represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day. #LaudatoSi

— Pope Francis (@Pontifex) June 18, 2015

The human environment and the natural environment deteriorate together.

— Pope Francis (@Pontifex) June 18, 2015

Deteriorating environmental conditions have a disproportionate affect on the “most vulnerable” people in the world, he says.

One particularly serious problem is the quality of water available to the poor. #LaudatoSi

— Pope Francis (@Pontifex) June 18, 2015

We have to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor. #LaudatoSi

— Pope Francis (@Pontifex) June 18, 2015

To blame population growth, and not an extreme consumerism on the part of some, is one way of refusing to face the issues.

— Pope Francis (@Pontifex) June 18, 2015

“There is a true ‘ecological debt’,” the pope says. “Developed countries ought to help pay this debt by limiting their consumption of nonrenewable energy.”

This is Pope Francis’s first encyclical—one of the most formal and significant statements a pope can make. And though the theme of environmental destruction has appeared in encyclicals by previous popes, it has never provided the primary subject matter.

Ebay banned the sale of spells back in 2012, and Etsy has followed suit, adjusting its guidelines on what kind of services can be sold through the site. No longer allowed: “any metaphysical service that promises or suggests it will effect a physical change (e.g., weight loss) or other outcome (e.g., love, revenge).”

Yay, Animal Crossing finally has skin tone options ⊟

Happy Home Designer, the upcoming Animal Crossing spin-off for 3DS, will allow you to pick a darker skin color for your characters, according to Nintendo product marketing specialist Alison Rapp. That’s a first for the series – previously, for people of color who wanted their villager’s skin tone to match theirs, they had to settle for a temporary tan.

While the feature is limited to Happy Home Designer for now, hopefully Nintendo has heard fans’ complaints about this missing option in previous entries, and the company will make sure to include it in future Animal Crossing games. Thanks to Animal Crossing World and @Megmar for spotting this!

Somerville really doesn't want to give the Globe the names and addresses of residential parking-permit holders

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

Somerville yesterday asked a federal judge to keep the state from making it hand over the names, addresses and phone numbers of Somerville residents with parking permits to a Globe reporter.

In a lawsuit filed in US District Court in Boston, the city says handing over the data would be "a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy" of permit holders. The Secretary of State's office disagrees.

At issue is a request Globe reporter Todd Wallack made last October seeking the records of all residential parking-permit holders in Somerville. In response, the city said it would provide some of the information - but not the first names, last names, addresses, Zip codes, e-mail addresses and phone numbers of permit holders.

Wallack appealed to the Secretary of State's office, which has now twice ordered the city to hand over the data - most recently on June 5.

The city says this would prove for residents and violates the Driver Protection Privacy Act, which limits information that can be made publicly available about motorist records, as well as a section of the state Public Records Law related to data that provides "intimate detail of a highly personal nature."

Twice, most recently on June 5, the Secretary of State's office ordered the city to hand over all the information Wallack asked for. The driver privacy law only applies to records maintained by the Registry of Motor Vehicles, not cities and towns, and there is nothing "intimate," in the data, such as "marital status, paternity, substance abuse, government assistance, family disputes and reputation," state Supervisor of Records Shawn Williams wrote the city.

In contrast, "names, addresses and telephone numbers are regularly available to the public through other sources such as voter lists and census records," so disclosure of the records to the Globe is mandated by the Public Records Law, Williams wrote.

In its suit, the city replies:

By turning over the first name, last name, address, zip code, phone numbers, and email addresses of permit holders acquired by the City in connection with motor vehicle related permits, the City would effectively be turning over the same information for which the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act contemplated non-disclosure, thereby frustrating the purpose of the Act.

Beyond the privacy issues, the city argues releasing the data would violate the equal-protection clause of the US constitution - and its state equivalent, "by creating an unlawful classification between drivers based upon whether they afford themselves of the privilege of obtaining a resident parking permit."

In addition to asking the state be permanently enjoined from making the city turn over the information, the city suit asks a judge to bar any action on release of the data until the suit is settled.

Infographic: Highlights Of The Pope’s Climate Change Encyclical

The Vatican released Thursday a 184-page papal encyclical by Pope Francis condemning the human behaviors causing climate change and urging global action to combat environmental degradation, marking the first time the Catholic Church has aligned itself with scientists on climate issues. Here are some highlights of the pope’s landmark climate change encyclical:

  • Establishes Catholic Church’s stance on issue 30 years too late
  • Announces new Eucharist composting program to reduce production of holy waste
  • Unveils Church’s effort to reduce energy use by merging Father, Son, Holy Spirit into one deity
  • Lays out Vatican’s plan to lead green initiatives by immediately recycling all records and documents pertaining to child abuse
  • Reveals many of the world’s poor lack access to clean drinking blood of Christ
  • Officially beatifies world’s last remaining black rhinoceros
  • 40-page recyclables sorting guide
  • Vows to immediately discontinue all Vatican-owned fracking operations
  • Something about implications ...

News in Brief: Frustrated Republicans Argue Pope Should Leave Science To Scientists Who Deny Climate Change

WASHINGTON—In response to a 184-page papal encyclical that urges immediate action to address the environmental and social consequences of global warming, a coalition of frustrated Republican leaders issued statements Thursday arguing that Pope Francis should leave scientific matters to scientists who deny climate change. “Frankly, it’s not really anyone’s place to make declarations about climate science or global temperature changes unless they’re a scientific expert who has spent years rejecting the concept of climate change,” said former Florida governor Jeb Bush, who added that the pope had neither studied climate science nor ever been among the 3 percent of researchers who stand in opposition to the overwhelmingly dominant position held by the scientific community on climate change, so he had no business speaking on the subject. “Personally, I would never trust anyone as an authority on climate change unless they had done years of research and ...

Great Job, Internet!: Here’s exactly how much superspy James Bond drinks per film

by Rob Dean

James Bond is known for many things: cool gadgets, cartoonish villains, an unquenchable libido. But he’s also known to consume quite a few drinks while on her majesty’s secret service. In fact, that drinking has leached over into many of his spoofs, including Archer:

But is that a fair assessment of 007? Just how much does the world’s most famous spy actually consume in each of his films? A few film nerds sought out the answer and have presented it in a handy infographic that charts every drink that Bond imbibes (or is implied to imbibe) in each of his movies, no matter the actor playing him. The drunkest Bond movie is Casino Royale, with a whopping 26 units of alcohol consumed (the dismal Tomorrow Never Dies comes in close second with 22 units of alcohol), while the Dalton era has the fewest drinks per movie. So ...

Secret Service agent who stole $820K from Silk Road pleads guilty

by Joe Mullin

The Silk Road saga had a stunning coda in April, when two of the federal agents who investigated the site were charged with stealing from it as well.

One of those two agents has now reached a plea deal with prosecutors. Shaun Bridges, a computer expert for the US Secret Service, is accused of stealing $820,000 in bitcoins from various drug dealers on the site.

"Mr. Bridges has regretted his actions from the very beginning," Bridges' lawyer told Bloomberg News. "His decision to plead guilty reflects his complete acceptance of responsibility and is another step towards rehabilitation."

New Marie Curie Film Will Highlight the Bias Against Women in Science

by Charline Jao

Marie Curie

We’ve had some great biopics recently about scientists like Alan Turing and Stephen Hawking, so I’m very excited to see a Marie Curie film in the works! It’s a French, German, and Polish co-production directed by French director Marie Noelle “for whom the Polish-born 20th century scientist has been an inspiration since childhood.”

Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in physics (and then a second in chemistry!), is most famous for discovering the elements of radium and polonium. Her life absolutely movie-worthy, says Noelle. As reported by Yahoo! News, Noelle told the AFP:

Within a space of six years, she gave birth to a child, lost her beloved husband with whom she shared her passion for scientific research, and fell in love again (with a married man) sparking a high-profile public scandal, and then she wins another Nobel to top it all off

Noelle, who also studied mathematics, says that she wants to use the film not only to capture Curie’s life, but also to draw attention to the problems that women still face in the scientific field:

In Europe, while we know that girls are better at math. There are only 13 percent of women in high-level scientific research.

Polish actress Karolina Gruszka will play the iconic scientist and the film is set to premiere in February 2016.

We can’t wait to see it (although it might be lacking one of my favorite Hark, a Vagrant scenes)! And while we’re here can I nominate Rosalind Franklin for the next biopic?

socimages:

I am a white woman. No more murder in my name.

By Lisa Wade, PhD

Many important things will be said in the next few weeks about the murder of nine people holding a prayer meeting at a predominantly African American church yesterday. Assuming that Dylann Roof is the murderer and that he made the proclamation being quoted in the media, I want to say: “I am a white woman. No more murder in my name.”

Before gunning down a room full of black worshippers, Roof reportedly said:

I have to do it. You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go.

For my two cents, I want to suggest that Roof’s alleged act was motivated by racism, first and foremost, but also sexism. In particular, a phenomenon called benevolent sexism.

Sociologists use the term to describe the attribution of positive traits to women that, nonetheless, justify their subordination to men. For example, women may be described as good with people, but this is believed to make them perform poorly in competitive arenas like work, sports, or politics. Better that they leave that to the men. Women are wonderful with children, they say, but this is used to suggest that they should take primary responsibility for unpaid, undervalued domestic work. Better that they let men support them.

And, the one that Roof used to rationalize his racist act was: Women are beautiful, but their grace makes them fragile. Better that they stand back and let men defend them. This argument is hundreds of years old, of course. It’s most clearly articulated in the history of lynching in which black men were routinely violently murdered by white mobs using the excuse that they raped a white woman.

I stand with Jessie Daniel Ames and her “revolt against chivalry” in the 1920s and ’30s. Ames was one of the first white women to speak out against lynching, arguing that its rationale was sexist as well as racist. Roof is the modern equivalent of this white mob. He believes that he and other white men own me and women like me — “you rape our women,” he said possessively — and so he justified gunning down innocent black people on my behalf. You are vulnerable, he’s whispering to me, let me protect you.

All oppression is interconnected. The matrix of domination must come down. I am a white woman. No more murder in my name.

Helen Mirren Thinks Ageist Double Standards Are “F–king Outrageous” - PS - We agree.

by Teresa Jusino

The amazing Dame Helen Mirren has been doing a lot of talking lately about sexism in the film industry. This time, at a Power Women breakfast hosted by The Wrap, Mirren was asked about the Maggie Gyllenhaal situation, where she was turned down for a role because she is “too old” to play the lover of a 55 year old actor. Check out what Mirren has to say about it in the video above, and prepare to love her even more than you already did.

Meet featherbowling, the most obscure sport in North America

by Bill Hanstock

It's like curling in a trench. At a feather.

Yes, featherbowling. From Wikipedia:

Feather bowling is a game played with wooden balls shaped like cheese wheels.

I'm listening. For those of you a bit confused about the scoring aspect:

The team with balls closest to the feather at the end of the round wins 1 point per ball. The game is over when one team scores 10 points.

I'm in. I'm all in. Let's all dig trenches in a local pub and start our own featherbowling leagues. NOTE: please get permission from your local pub before digging your trench.

After the game has ended it is customary to eat pommes frites dipped in mayonnaise and have a sexy party.

Uh. Let's hope that bit is just a Wikipedia editor having a bit of fun. The sexy party, I mean. I don't want any sex-based parties interfering with my mayo fries.

I am very serious about my mayo fries.

If you happen to be in Detroit, hit up the Cadieux Cafe. Maybe they'll let you bowl a round.

Please don’t spread the name and face of the Charleston shooter, call him a white terrorist because that’s all he is, don’t give him the respect of learning his name or recognizing his face. All he wants is to be famous, now he will be infamous. He only deserves to be known as a white homegrown terrorist and imagined as a monster because that’s what he is. Instead learn the names and faces of the victims, they deserve to be remembered not the monster.
