uncss

uncss:

UnCSS is a tool that removes unused CSS from your stylesheets. It works across multiple files and supports Javascript-injected CSS.

The process by which UnCSS removes the unused rules is as follows:

  1. The HTML files are loaded by PhantomJS and JavaScript is executed.
  2. Used stylesheets are extracted from the resulting HTML.
  3. The stylesheets are concatenated and the rules are parsed by css-parse.
  4. document.querySelector filters out selectors that are not found in the HTML files.
  5. The remaining rules are converted back to CSS.

Researchers weigh up a Mars-sized exoplanet

by John Timmer

So far, the most successful method of searching for exoplanets has been watching for the dimming they create as they pass in front of a distant a star from Earth's perspective. That's the method used by the Kepler probe, and it's identified thousands of potential worlds.

But this method doesn't tell us much about the planets. The amount of dimming tells us the radius, and the time it takes for an orbit gives us the distance between the planet and the star. But on rare occasions, we get lucky, and there are several planets packed closely enough to have significant gravitational interactions. This can tell us the mass and, combined with the radius, the density—which in turn tells us something about the composition.

Now, researchers have used this method to measure three planets in the Kepler-138, including one that's Mars sized and has a surprisingly low density.

News in Brief: Coworkers Pull Off Daring One-Hour Lunch Break

TUCSON, AZ—Saying they couldn’t believe such a wild exploit had even been attempted, employees at local marketing firm Synergy Media Services told reporters they were still completely dumbfounded Thursday after account manager Tim Gibbons managed to pull off a daring one-hour lunch break. “It’s not like Tim rushed out of the office, grabbed a quick premade sandwich from the convenience store across the street and then rushed back in—no, he sauntered right past everyone on his way out, headed straight for a Buffalo Wild Wings, where he met a friend, ordered an Asian Zing wing combo with fries and took his time eating it before walking back in just in time for the 1:30 sales meeting. It was absolutely insane,” said coworker Helen Long, recounting with awe the boxed-up leftovers that Gibbons triumphantly placed in the office refrigerator upon returning as Long herself worked through ...

Interview: Noelle Stevenson invigorates YA comics with Lumberjanes and more

by Oliver Sava

Since she burst onto the comics scene in 2012 with her webcomic Nimona, cartoonist Noelle Stevenson has become one of the fastest rising stars in the industry. Shortly after Nimona’s online debut, book publisher Harper Collins acquired the rights for a high-profile print release, and last year, Stevenson launched the fan-favorite Boom! series Lumberjanes as character designer and co-writer, along with Shannon Watters and Grace Ellis. These two titles have earned the cartoonist multiple 2015 Eisner Award nominations, and her skill for writing teenage characters makes her a great fit for her newest project hitting stands this month: a revival of Marvel’s Runaways as part of the publisher’s Secret Wars summer event. In a recent conversation with The A.V Club, Stevenson talked about the birth of Nimona, the phenomenon of Lumberjanes, and how she’s maintaining the spirit of the classic Runaways run in her ...

Two British Pilots Record World First by Flying Their Planes in Formation Through a 25-Foot High Hangar at 185 MPH

by Justin Page

British pilots Paul Bonhomme and Steve Jones, who have both been flying together for the past 17 years, recently became the first two people in the world to fly their planes in formation through a 25-foot tall hangar at 185 MPH. Both of the daring pilots had only about 32 feet on either side of them and three feet below them as they shot through the hangar in the Red Bull Barnstorming video. Red Bull shared an interactive 360 video plus an explanation of the engineering and science behind their barnstorming stunt.

Speaking shortly after the first flight through the hangar, Bonhomme, who will be racing in the British stop of the Red Bull Air Race at Ascot in August, said: “Ultimately if we get it wrong we hit a building so pulling up and seeing Steve still there, there was a great sense of relief, but it was really great fun and also slightly bizarre flying through a building with my mate.”

As wingman to Bonhomme, Steve Jones spent half of his time looking across at the other plane as the hangar approached. Speaking about the moments before he flew through the hangar for the first time, Jones said: “There is nothing that quite compares to that feeling when you are 200 yards from the hangar and you’ve got no options, you’re completely hemmed in and you just need to check you’re in line with the gap in the building and press on through it.”

The hangar, based at Llanbedr Airfield in North Wales, was spotted more than six months ago and identified as a possible location for the duo, who had both wondered if the feat was possible for a number of years having been inspired by Barnstorming pilots of the early 1900’s, but had been unable to find a suitable location. US Treasury Announces That a Woman Will Appear on the $10 Bill! Harriet Tubman Is the Front-runner - We did it! Sexism over! That's how that works, right?

by Dan Van Winkle

18874993321_3fe6e4639a_z

After a successful campaign to honor women’s suffrage for its 100-year anniversary in 2020 by finally catching us up with other countries and putting a woman’s face on a common piece of US currency, the US treasury has announced they’re planning to put a woman on the $10 bill! And you know what’s even better? The winner chosen by the campaign is none other than famed slavery abolitionist and “Underground Railroad” organizer Harriet Tubman.

Yes please. (via Wikimedia)

So not only would this be the first time in 150 years that a woman would appear on US bank notes, but Tubman would also be the very African-American to appear on the paper currency of this supposed great melting pot of ours. It’s a win-win wherein we win twice, and bigots win 0 times—AKA the best kind.

Sadly, this doesn’t mean that Tubman, or any of the other candidates if the Treasury doesn’t go by the results of the poll, would get the sole honor of adorning the ten.

You can relax that look of concern now, Hamilton. (via Eli Christman)

They plan on also continuing to produce tens with Alexander Hamilton on them, as Treasury secretary Jack Lew told reporters (via The Guardian),

It was personally very important to me to make sure that as we make this decision we continue to honour Alexander Hamilton who played such a formative role in the creation our country, the establishment of democracy as we know it and the principle of the soundness of our currency.

Lew also said the new series of $10 bills will “focus on celebrating a champion for our inclusive democracy,” which is exactly the kind of thing we like to hear. If the spot doesn’t go to Tubman, other frontrunners in the Women on 20s campaign were Eleanor Roosevelt and Susan B. Anthony, who campaigned for women’s suffrage, so they’ve got plenty of good options.

Of course, this is the Internet, and you’re bound to run into someone who somehow manages to be upset by the idea of a man being forced to share “his” spot on money with a woman—despite the fact that it should be OK to swap some face entirely. If that happens, just ask them, “Would you have been able to name who was on the $10 bill before this was a thing?” That’s generally a pretty quick conversation ender for that line of argument.

Michael Oher believes ‘The Blind Side’ has had a negative effect on his career

by Hayley Byrnes

The Blind Side is an awesome movie, right?

Just don't ask Michael Oher about it. The film may have been a hit at the box office, but Oher, who the movie was based on, claims it has had a negative effect on his NFL career.

Via ESPN

"I'm not trying to prove anything,'' Oher said. "People look at me, and they take things away from me because of a movie. They don't really see the skills and the kind of player I am. That's why I get downgraded so much, because of something off the field.

"This stuff, calling me a bust, people saying if I can play or not ... that has nothing to do with football. It's something else off the field. That's why I don't like that movie.''

Well then! Guess he's not firing up the DVD player anytime soon.

LibreOffice Now Available On Apple's Mac App Store

by timothy
sfcrazy writes: It's an event of historical magnitude: One of the most popular Open Source projects, LibreOffice, is now available directly from Apple's Mac App Store. You can get LibreOffice on OSX with automatic updates, long-term maintenance, and optional professional support, for the first time. There are two editions of LibreOffice available on the Mac App Store: LibreOffice from Collabora and LibreOffice Vanilla. While the Vanilla edition can be downloaded free of cost, LO from Collabora has a price tag of $10. "Free through the App store" is an implicit endorsement that plain old "free" can't beat, even taking open-source licensing out of the picture.

thartist72:

“In 2002, having spent more than three years in one residence for the first time in my life, I got called for jury duty. I show up on time, ready to serve. When we get to the voir dire, the lawyer says to me, “I see you’re an astrophysicist. What’s that?” I answer, “Astrophysics is the laws of physics, applied to the universe—the Big Bang, black holes, that sort of thing.” Then he asks, “What do you teach at Princeton?” and I say, “I teach a class on the evaluation of evidence and the relative unreliability of eyewitness testimony.” Five minutes later, I’m on the street.

A few years later, jury duty again. The judge states that the defendant is charged with possession of 1,700 milligrams of cocaine. It was found on his body, he was arrested, and he is now on trial. This time, after the Q&A is over, the judge asks us whether there are any questions we’d like to ask the court, and I say, “Yes, Your Honor. Why did you say he was in possession of 1,700 milligrams of cocaine? That equals 1.7 grams. The ‘thousand’ cancels with the ‘milli-’ and you get 1.7 grams, which is less than the weight of a dime.” Again I’m out on the street.“

Saké is Back: Lots and Lots of It

by MJ Skegg

Saké Fest PDX is on the horizon, returning to the Sentinel Hotel next Thursday June 25. It’s a great event for saké fans and novices alike, as there is a full of array of styles to try, plus a variety of foods to pair them with. Try a few different sakés and it quickly becomes apparent how versatile a drink it is, happily taken with all types of food, sweet or savory (and not just Japanese). There are over 130 samples of saké, plum wine and beer, with some rare Japanese bottles being poured, as well as what are known as jikaze, from regional saké brewers. Brands from the US will also be represented, including Oregon’s SakéOne brewing facility, which is behind the Momokawa and Moonstone labels.

There’s an abundance of food (you’ll need it with all that booze—seriously), offering real diversity: Various types of Japanese eats from the likes of Noraneko, Yakuza, Yama Sushi & Izakaya and Hokusei; plus Smallwares, The American Local, Davis Street Tavern, and Jamaican and Hawaiian specialties from FiMi Kingston and Bamboo Grove, respectively. Chizu is supplying the cheese and the likes of Sticky Island Treats and Xocolatl de David have something for dessert. This year there is limited early admission for those who don’t like crowds, but I’m not sure it’s worth the 20 bucks for an extra hour, as even when busy you can get round everything within a couple of hours, and it starts to thin out towards the end anyway. For the dedicated saké drinker there is a special pairings dinner on Wednesday 24 for $95. Saké Fest PDX, Sentinel Hotel, 614 SW11th, June 25, 6.30-9 pm, $55 ($65 on door); early entry at 5.30 pm $75; tickets available here

Newswire: Rob Zombie is directing a Groucho Marx biopic

by Katie Rife

Yep, you’re reading that headline right: According to Deadline, Rob Zombie has signed on to direct a biopic about the twilight years of Groucho Marx. (Think Skidoo, not Duck Soup.) The film will be based on a memoir by Steve Stoliar, who worked as Groucho’s personal secretary and archivist when the comedy legend was in his 80s. The book details Groucho’s tumultuous relationship with his manager, Erin Fleming, as well as the constellation of fading stars—like Groucho’s brothers Zeppo and Gummo, Mae West, George Burns, Bob Hope, Jack Lemmon, and Steve Allen—in his orbit.

Zombie presumably got the job due to a miscommunication between the director and production company Cold Iron Pictures about the content of his most recent project, the killer clown movie 31. (”Oh, wait, clown murder? I thought you said clown elder.”) And while he is, to say the least, an ...
