Silk Road closure reportedly cuts off supply of drug for assisted suicides

by Adrianne Jeffries

The shutdown of Silk Road, the secret online marketplace for illegal drugs and other goods, may be having a grim side effect. The site was used by junkies and Timothy Leary types, but a doctor in Australia claims it was also an important resource for chronically ill patients pursuing euthanasia, or assisted suicide.

Euthanasia is illegal in many countries, but there are still doctors and advocates who will help distressed patients seeking voluntary death. Usually these patients are in so much pain, or their quality of life is so diminished, that they no longer want to live and prefer to exit on their own terms. Such patients were using Silk Road to purchase the lethal drug Nembutal and download copies of an ebook called The Peaceful Pill Handbook, says Australian right-to-die advocate Philip Nitschke.

The ebook, a euthanasia how-to guide that has been banned in New Zealand and Australia, is available on Amazon. The drug, however, is harder to get. Dr. Nitschke told The Age that he knew of at least 20 people who used Silk Road to clandestinely purchase Nembutal, the brand name for the lethal injection drug pentobarbital that induces respiratory failure. Patients seeking Nembutal will now have to buy it from Chinese chemical makers. "The removal of the site will now mean that other less secure avenues will be pursued," Dr. Nitschke says.

Little Girl’s Rays of Sunshine Wish Granted by ‘Top Gear’ Host Richard Hammond and a Pink Lamborghini

by Kimber Streams

Eight-year-old Emilia was recently diagnosed with a severe lung condition, but thanks to Rays of Sunshine, she received her wish of driving around in a shockingly pink Lamborghini Aventador with Top Gear host Richard Hammond. In this heartwarming video, luxury car specialists Yiannimize temporarily plasti-dip the car provided by H R Owen. Then, Hammond meets up with Emilia who’s ready to go for a spin in her own pink track suit.

According to The Supercar Kids, Hammond said:

It was a real privilege to be asked to make a contribution to such an inspiring, positive, unique and uplifting occasion. Emilia was charming and wonderful. There was every chance she could have been shy, but she chatted nonstop. It is truly inspiring how brave people are. Hearty congratulations to Rays of Sunshine for organising yet another unique and special occasion and to H R Owen for pulling out all the stops.

This Is Why Einstein's Brain Was Better Than Yours

by George Dvorsky

This Is Why Einstein's Brain Was Better Than Yours

Neuroscientists, along with pretty much everyone else, have long suspected that Albert Einstein's brain was somehow unique. A new study now affirms these suspicions, showing that his genius may have arisen from the way the hemispheres of his brain were so freakishly well connected.

Warner Bros. CEO Says 'We Need To Get Wonder Woman On The Big Screen Or TV'

by Joseph Hughes
firehose

"or TV" being the operative implied second tier that we already know has been heavily shopped around

Fans who are clamoring for a Wonder Woman movie just gained a pretty big ally in the form of Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara.

Speaking at an entertainment law conference this weekend, Tsujihara told the gathered crowd that the studio’s lack of superhero movies outside of the Superman and Batman franchises was a “missed opportunity,” and expressed his desire to focus on developing a Wonder Woman project, saying “We need to get Wonder Woman on the big screen or TV.”

Quoted by The Hollywood Reporter, Tsujihara assured those in attendance that the studio has “huge plans for a number of other DC properties on TV.” We’ve seen evidence to support this, as television series based on both the Flash and John Constantine have recently been announced, with the former spinning out of the CW’s Arrow, the second season of which begins on Wednesday.

But the big takeaway from this conference, for many, will be Tsujihara’s desire to produce a Wonder Woman project, as it would appear he’s disappointed that has yet to happen. Recent attempts to bring the DC Comics hero to other media have mostly failed. While the direct to DVD Wonder Woman animated feature was one of the more critically celebrated in that current line, the David E. Kelly helmed Wonder Woman television pilot was turned down by NBC, and the The CW passed on the proposed Amazon television series, which was being produced by Allan Heinberg.

Real-time media consumption

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

Bitly media map

Last year, URL shortening service bitly and Forbes made a map that showed popular news sources by state. However, the map was based on a static month of data, so what it showed then doesn't necessarily apply to now. Bitly took it a step further this year and shows media consumption in real-time.

They also categorized media sources into newspapers, tv and radio, magazines, and online only for a more detailed view. And to top it off, you can click on states to see a list of top sources, and you can see links driving traffic to the listed sites.

One key thing to keep in mind as you read the maps: They show disproportionality rather than raw counts. So when you see that Texas is a TMZ fiend, that doesn't mean they click more on the celebrity news site more than on Huffington Post. Rather, it means the relative volume of TMZ-clicking from Texas versus other states is higher versus the relative volume of Huffington Post-clicking.

Evernote iPad launch screen

Evernote enabled two-step verification for its Evernote Premium and Evernote Business users in May, and now the extra security layer is available to the rest of its user base. When enabled, users will need both a generated code from a smartphone as well as a username and password in order to log into the service. The feature comes after a security breach earlier this year that prompted the company to force all users to change their passwords and expedited the development of advanced security features. Unpaid users will be required to download an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator, in order to generate the login code, while premium and business users can choose to have the code delivered as a text message.

NYT building collection of unhip Daft Punk corrections

by Rob Beschizza
firehose

via multitasksuicide: "#nonewmusictypos"

Jim Romenesko noticed that the New York Times ran another Daft Punk correction."

Correction: October 5, 2013

An earlier version of this report ... misstated the name of the Daft Punk song played at the Sept. 28 ceremony. It was “Get Lucky,” not “Get Funky.”

Correction: May 31, 2013

Because of editing errors, an article on Thursday about a duo that has its first Top 10 single and its first No. 1 album on the Billboard album chart misstated its name at two points. As the article correctly noted elsewhere, it is Daft Punk — not Daft Puck or Daft Pink.

The NYT is admirable in its attention to detail when it comes to corrections. But it's funny how the specifics here (perhaps unfairly!) paint it as unbelievably unhip, as if these names were fringe-culture obscurities rather than something blaring from every goddamn radio station in America 24/7.

On the other hand, it makes me think of a parallel universe extruding into ours. NYT reporters and editors arguing over who changed a story to say 'Get Funky' by 'Daft Puck', only to see more weird changes happening on their Quark consoles, would be a great cold open in a data-glitchy-spooky-themed Ghostbusters sequel.

Morrissey would like to stress that he has not been consulted over any takedown request to remove the Tumblr blog named 'This Charming Charlie'. Morrissey is represented by Warner-Chappell Publishing, and not Universal Music Publishing, (who have allegedly demanded that the lyrics be removed). Morrissey is delighted and flattered by the Peanuts comic strip with its use of Morrissey-Smiths lyrics, and he hopes that the strips remain.
