Last summer, this Paris neighborhood had more Airbnb guests than actual residents

by Sonali Kohli
Who needs a hotel room?

The Wall Street Journal published a cool data interactive this week: How Airbnb is taking over Paris (paywall). Among the most interesting tidbits is that in the Marais, a popular Airbnb neighborhood, the number of travelers who rented out homes via the service last summer actually outnumbered the residents. The Journal notes:

During summer 2014, 66,320 people stayed on Airbnb in the neighborhood’s two arrondissements, slightly more than the 64,795 who actually live in them, according to 2012 figures.

It’s a striking figure, but of course most of those Airbnb guests would stay for just a few days at a time, so on any given night there are likely more residents than Airbnbers bedding down the neighborhood.

Airbnb describes the centrally-located neighborhood thusly: “Le Marais’ classic Parisian streets and cafes strike a delicate balance between well-traveled tourist hotspots and local-favorite hangouts.” Americans made up about a quarter of the neighborhood’s Airbnb guests, followed by Australians and Brits.

While Le Marais is one of the most popular neighborhoods, Airbnb users have swarmed all of Paris in the past five years, going from 144 guests in the summer of 2009 to 517,821 last summer, according to the numbers Airbnb gave the Journal.

Airbnb confirmed the numbers to Quartz, and international numbers suggest that growth is not just a Paris phenomenon—at the end of 2013 there had been 6 million Airbnb users. To date the there have been about 40 million, Airbnb told Quartz.

Airbnb’s massive growth is bad news for Paris’s hotel industry, whose luxury hotels have already seen a decline in occupancy since October 2014, according to the Guardian. This was exacerbated by a drop in tourism after the Charlie Hebdo attack in January.

Since we last mentioned Tensile tents around this time last year, the company has unveiled several new models of their fantastic suspended tent systems. There’s a small hammock for three that can be layered into a multi-tiered treehouse, a 2-layer tree tent, and a massive communal tent system designed to hold 6 people high in the air. Tentsile was invented by designers Alex Shirley-Smith and Kirk Kirchev in 2012 and have since taken the camping world by storm, opening their own factory and picking up an ISPO design award. You can see plenty more here.

The Definition of Insanity: Jeb Bush still favors appointing judges “with a proven ... - Washington Post

firehose

'“When I was governor, we tried to find people with a proven record of judicial restraint, and people that were committed to enforcing the constitutional limits on government authority. In essence, what I’m saying is I think we need to have people that have not just theoretically, but have had a proven record of not legislating from the bench.”

He then doubled down:

“All justices disappoint their presidents some of the time but Souter was like a 90 percent swing and miss,” Hewitt said. “How do you avoid Souters?”
“You focus on people to be Supreme Court justices who have a proven record of judicial restraint,” Bush answered.

This is exactly the problem with the judicial philosophy promoted by many conservatives for the past 30 years: “judicial restraint” in “enforcing constitutional limits on government authority” leads to NFIB v. Sebelius. In fairness, that is not what Bush actually said but, as George Will recently observed, that is what this judicial philosophy produces in practice.'

Engineers Just Broke the Capacity Limit For Fiber Optic Transmission

So, that Internet apocalypse that’s going to befall us when our fiber optic cables max out? Maybe not so much. On Thursday, engineers reported in Science that they’d broken the “capacity limit” for fiber optic transmission, opening the door to future networks that carry more data further at lower costs.

A confederate memorial park near Ridgfield gets some well deserved attention as people ask that the flags come down.

'Leaders of Vancouver(, WA)'s NAACP organization are calling for a local group to take down two Confederate flags flying near I-5.

The first and third national flag of the Confederate States of America are displayed in Jefferson Davis Park, a memorial to the Confederate leader.

The park is located on privately-owned land near Ridgefield and is visible to drivers on the interstate.

“The flag is a sign of terror for us,” explained I'Nita Hafley, the secretary of Vancouver's NAACP.

“It's out there every day for everybody that goes up and down that freeway to see,” said Rev. Marva Edwards, the president of Vancouver's NAACP organization.

The flags have been present at the park for years, but Edwards and Hafley say it's time for the flags to be removed.'

[UPDATED] Rose McGowan Speaking Up About the “Bullshit in Hollywood” Got Her Fired by Her Acting Agent - And why that's good.

by Jill Pantozzi

I just got fired by my wussy acting agent because I spoke up about the bullshit in Hollywood. Hahaha. #douchebags #awesome #BRINGIT

— rose mcgowan (@rosemcgowan) June 25, 2015

Pardon my “don’t give a crap,” but fuck ’em.

Rose McGowan hasn’t been shy about expressing her distaste for how things are run in Hollywood. Recently she gave a speech to the Sisterhood of Traveling Producers in which she gave seven tips to fight sexism in the industry. One of them included the words, “Stand up and stop perpetuating the cycle,” and that’s exactly what McGowan did herself earlier this week when she not-so-subtly tweeted a casting note from an Adam Sandler script which asked for actors to show off cleavage, “push up bras encouraged.”

And what happened? As she took to Twitter again yesterday to tell the world and make sure everyone knows how things are in Hollywood, “I just got fired by my wussy acting agent because I spoke up about the bullshit in Hollywood.”

The awesome thing about being an artist? You can’t be fired from your own mind. #FREEDOM

— rose mcgowan (@rosemcgowan) June 25, 2015

Pretty much everyone was in agreement she was better off, but she also got some really nice messages thanking her for speaking up.

🙏 RT @carpenterdiana: I’m a stuntwoman-in-training hoping to work in the biz someday& what you’re doing is amazing and brave. Thank you.

— rose mcgowan (@rosemcgowan) June 25, 2015

In the same vein, McGowan also had some great words to say in a recent interview on her directorial debut, Dawn, with i-D:

Women-and the way women look at each other and feel about themselves-are at the core of my work. I was looking back on my own career and I realisd [sic] that I was turned into a commodity, and one that I didn’t participate in or sell very well. I felt very uncomfortable about making myself into that commodity. The male gaze affected me a lot, most of the time, when you see a woman on screen, she proceeds with the eyes of the men that filmed and directed her; she sees herself that way instead of having her own perception. And I’ve been seeing that way for years-I’m not blaming anybody, I was part of the Hollywood machine-but I’m glad that my own life experiences and empirical evidences made me think and act in a different way. The only way to get beyond this is to leave the gender part out of filming-you have to show people the middle. That it’s not only always about men versus women or women versus men. For me, it’s not even about focusing on a female-centric perspective, but rather about developing a story-centric one. I hope that comes through in Dawn.

And later, on some people working in Hollywood:

What gets said and done in that town, especially towards women, is disgusting. There’s an omnipresent ownership of women. Once, I had an agent who told me not to speak very much in meetings, because it was intimidating to men-and she was a woman! Or another example, three years ago, I was considering coming back to Hollywood when I met my husband, and was about to sign with a new manager-and that guy stuck his tongue in my throat after the meeting. I just reacted by saying ”C’mon! Is this still happening? Still? You just showed me a picture of your 9-month-old baby! But I will out you at some point. I’ve got a list.”

You heard her. She’s got a list. And plenty of others are making them too; you can be sure of that.

[UPDATE] Variety writes:

Rose McGowan’s agent Sheila Wenzel has left Innovative Artist after the actress tweeted that she had been fired by her agent over comments she made regarding a role she auditioned for in an Adam Sandler movie.

Wenzel, whose other clients include Britt Robertson and Amanda Seyfried, said she couldn’t comment on the situation.

Also, Jessica Chastain got in on this.

As do I. Her treatment confirms the misogyny underpinning the industry. She should be celebrated for speaking out.👏 https://t.co/yUyO0LXkFd

— Jessica Chastain (@jes_chastain) June 25, 2015

[UPDATE #2] McGowan has since tweeted a correction on Variety’s story:

Sheila Wenzel is a wonderful agent that ceased working with Innovative before my firing. She's a good, strong woman I'm proud to know.

— rose mcgowan (@rosemcgowan) June 25, 2015

Variety also updated their post to now say:

One source tells Variety that Wenzel actually left the agency earlier this week and that her exit had nothing to do with McGowan. The source wasn’t a part of the meetings, but said they believe that once Wenzel left, the wheels were already in motion to drop McGowan in light of her comments about the audition.

“[Sandler and his team] were not aware the casting director sent this note out,” a source close to Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison, said. “They felt it was completely inappropriate and have made sure that it has not been sent out again.”

Marvel’s A-Force to Continue Beyond Secret Wars and All-New, All-Different Avengers to Debut This Fall! - Diversity, AHOY!

by Teresa Jusino
firehose

'Tony Stark leading an all-new group of Avengers including Captain America [Sam Wilson], Thor [Jane Foster], Vision, Miles Morales, a.k.a. Spider-Man, Nova, and Ms. Marvel'

AFORCE_1_Cover

Issue #1 cover by Victor Ibanez.

You knew we’d be all over Marvel’s A-Force, a comic created for the current Secret Wars summer event in which an all-female team of Avengers is Arcadia’s best defense in Battleworld. Issue #1 of the Secret Wars story arc of A-Force, written by Marguerite Bennett and G. Willow Wilson and drawn by Jorge Molina, started off amazingly, and we can’t wait to read Issue #2. Well, A-Force fans, there was some great news today! Marvel will be continuing A-Force after Secret Wars with a new #1 continuing the series in the Fall!

Wilson and Molina will continue on the title, which will start with an all-new Issue #1 this fall.

NOTE: There are spoilers below. You’ve been warned.

According to a press release from Marvel:

So who is the mysterious Singularity? Where is she from? And how will she pull our band of heroes together? “Readers first became acquainted with Singularity during our blockbuster summer event SECRET WARS,” says series editor Daniel Ketchum. “At the conclusion of SECRET WARS, Singularity will arrive in the new Marvel Universe. And when she discovers that its fate is hanging in the balance, she will summon A-Force to her side to battle a threat the likes of which they’ve never seen.”

With the world in danger, the call is made – A-FORCE ASSEMBLE! Marvel’s most powerful women are ready to take the world by storm and no one is more excited to present the new A-Force team than series writer G. Willow Wilson. “Given the tremendous fan response to the A-FORCE SECRET WARS series, I’m very excited to bring this wonderful cast of characters home to the new Marvel Universe. She-Hulk, Dazzler, Nico, Medusa and an exciting lineup of guest stars will take on a threat unlike anything they’ve ever faced before.”

If you haven’t yet gotten on the A-Force train, definitely check it out. Watching these female heroes in action – together – is truly an amazing experience. And you only have one issue to get through before Issue #2 comes out next week! The Secret Wars story arc continues for five issues through September, with the new Issue #1 happening after that.

allnewalldifferentavengers

Meanwhile, in other Avengers news, October brings the debut of the All-New, All-Different Avengers (is that the title, though? For real? That’s not a title, that’s a marketing strategy. That’s like, if they would’ve called A-Force “All-Female, All-Ovaried Avengers.” But whatever.) in a new series set to drop in October! The new title, written by Mark Waid with art by Adam Kubert & Mahmud Asrar, finds Tony Stark leading an all-new group of Avengers including Captain America [Sam Wilson], Thor [Jane Foster], Vision, Miles Morales, a.k.a. Spider-Man, Nova, and Ms. Marvel! SO MUCH AWESOME ON ONE TEAM! And notice – only one white dude. This is what progress looks like!

According to Marvel:

Kicking off the new series, writer Mark Waid plans no training period and a baptismal by chaos and WAR! “As faithful NOVA readers will recognize, the main villain in our first story – Warbringer – has strong ties to Sam Alexander [a.k.a. Nova], but does Sam dare confess this to the team after the havoc Warbringer wreaks in New York City?”

Waid also plans to place hurdle after hurdle in front of this new team including a challenge a majority of people have to deal with every day – financial responsibility. “One of the Avengers’ often-undiscussed ‘superpowers’ has always been Tony Stark’s boundless fortune. As readers of Brian Bendis’s upcoming INVINCIBLE IRON MAN will see, Tony can no longer be the team’s sole financial resource–meaning that our Avengers will have to operate a little more modestly and with limits to their resources, making their battles even more challenging.”

The Avengers assemble this fall for a team that will truly live up to the name the series title implicitly states that is all-new, all-different, and like no other Avengers team ever. “This team is a group of characters that you’ve never seen operate together before, no matter how long you may have been reading comics, and yet it’s also a team that upholds the Avengers’ traditions—there’s nobody among these characters that you look at and feel hasn’t earned their place on the team or in the spotlight, the way some past Avengers occasionally have,” says Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “And it’s possibly the most real-world reflective Avengers team of all time, with only a single white male to be found amidst the membership rolls.”

Fall can’t get here soon enough! Keep it up Marvel – we love the look of the new Marvel U!

Florida bye

A man who formerly portrayed Chief Osceola at Florida State University was killed in Panama City Beach this week after an argument over gumbo spices at a restaurant there.

Caleb Joshua Halley was stabbed at a seafood restaurant by his coworker 26-year-old Orlando Thompson, who has been arrested on charges of manslaughter by the Panama City Police Department.

According to police reports the two men were arguing over the amount of spice to put into Buddy's Seafood Market gumbo Tuesday where the two men worked.

Thompson armed himself with a wooden board and Halley with a small wooden knife.

Thompson then retreated and returned with a knife, slashing Halley, causing three lacerations across his torso.

Halley, who is from Calhoun County and served as Osceola at FSU from 2004 to 2007, died from his injuries Thursday.

Drone flying over forest fire diverts planes, costs US Forest Service $10K

by Megan Geuss

The Lake Fire in California's San Bernadino county has engulfed tens of thousands of acres of national forest, and on Wednesday, three planes carrying flame retardant were prevented from dropping their cargo on the burning forest below due to interference from a private drone.

A DC-10 carrying 10,800 gallons of retardant, and two smaller planes also carrying retardant, were diverted from a drop site south of Big Bear Lake, where scattered homes were being threatened by the encroaching fire, the Los Angeles Times wrote. An incident commander spotted the drone, a fixed-wing craft about four feet wide, flying about 800 or 900 feet off the ground, at an elevation of 11,000 feet above sea-level.

Hobby drones are forbidden to fly above 400 feet off the ground in most situations, and the US Forest Service had issued a temporary flight restriction over the fire-fighting area.

' Like most politicians, I find Bobby Jindal disingenuous. However, as an Indian-American progressive & comedian, I felt I had to respond harshly & quickly after he announced his candidacy for President. Bobby Jindal uses his "Indian-American" identity to support his American Dream narrative & to get money from the older Indian community in the US, who are simply happy to see a Brown face in office, regardless of their politics. Yet, he distanced himself from this identity by talking about the end of hyphenated identities & buying into the idea that we were all Americans first. This is a way to pander to Mainstream America. As is the fact he claims he picked the name "Bobby" (His birth name is Piyush) because that was his favorite character on your Brady Bunch. I mean, come on! Also, I completely disagree with his politics & he's a goofball & I'm a comedian.'
