Newswire: Amy Schumer turned down The Daily Show so she wouldn’t get tied down

by William Hughes

In news that would probably make Trevor Noah feel pretty great, were he not safely nestled within Comedy Central’s patented “No More Goof-Ups” Social Media Blackout Vault, a lot of people have been talking about why they didn’t want the Daily Show hosting job he so recently received. Now, one of his new Comedy Central colleagues has joined the conversation, with Amy Schumer chiming in on why she didn’t take the gig.

Casting rumors and could-have-beens have been swirling around late night cable’s (apparently) least-coveted hosting spot for months now, ever since Jon Stewart announced he’d be stepping down from the show in August. Veteran comics Chris Rock, Louis CK, and Amy Poehlerwhose “No” was apparently delivered so quickly it nearly broke the sound barrierwere all in consideration for the job. But aside from those big-name gets, reports had also been moving around ...

Things We Saw Today: Southern Bastards #10 Variant Cover Destroys the Confederate Flag - "Death to the Flag, Long Live the South."

by Jessica Lachenal

latour variant southern bastards confederate

Jason Latour created a very special variant cover for this next issue of Southern Bastards, featuring the Confederate flag being torn apart by a dog. The cover also reads, “Death to the Flag, Long Live the South.” He and Jason Aaron are also currently working on a way to donate proceeds from the sale of the variant to the families of the victims in the Charleston shooting. (via Comic Book Resources)

  • Actress Ariane Labed is now officially signed on for the Assassin’s Creed movie alongside Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. No word yet on whether Cotillard has improved her death scene acting. (via Deadline)
  • So, like, this next bit of news has us wiggin’. Apparently there’s a Clueless musical in the works, and here’s hoping it’s going to be totally fetch. Oh, uh… wait, sorry. Wrong movie. (via /Film)

Darren Wallace has got one hell of an imagination, because this mashup of Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Wizard of Oz is absolutely out of this world. List this one under “Things You Didn’t Know You Needed Until You Saw It,” because seriously, there’s something extra… special about a Cowardly Lion Thor. (via The Daily Dot)

  • We here at The Mary Sue are pretty gosh darn excited for the American Gods series that’s set to premiere on Starz. What’s even more exciting is that the author himself, Neil freakin’ Gaiman (not actually his middle name) is going to pen a few of the episodes. Aw yiss. (via Deadline)
  • And, as if you needed more Gaiman-related news, Joseph Gordon-Levitt alluded to some interesting points about Sandman in his most recent reddit AMA. Specifically, he said, “We are using a whole bunch of specifics straight from the comics, but of course, we’re also having to do a certain amount of invention, and in between that, there’s tons of re-appropriating, re-contextualizing, combining, consolidating, and all manner of things that literalists might not like.” Pay close attention, but be open-minded, folks. Okay? (via Comic Book Resources)

There’s so few things to see, and we have so much time to see them.

Wait, that doesn’t sound right.

David Gold sues Portland over Grove Hotel project, Right 2 Dream Too

firehose

'The would-be developer of a shuttered Old Town Chinatown hotel filed a lawsuit Thursday against the city of Portland seeking $237,373 because the real estate deal fell apart.

Developer David Gold blames city leaders for undercutting his proposed project by allowing the Right 2 Dream Too homeless camp to set up shop across the street, at the corner of West Burnside Street and Fourth Avenue.

Gold reached a deal in 2011 to buy the city-owned Grove Hotel from the Portland Development Commission and renovate it into an Asian-themed hostel. But the deal didn't go forward and city leaders selected a new hotel project led by developer Bob Naito.

In the lawsuit, filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court, Gold's attorney claims that Commissioner Dan Saltzman said the city would take enforcement action to remove the homeless camp and developers should proceed with due diligence to redevelop the property.

But the suit claims that Commissioner Amanda Fritz or another city employee directed the Bureau of Development Services to abandon enforcement action.

As a direct result of the homeless camp's existence, the expected value of the finished project plummeted $900,000 and Gold couldn't secure funding to go forward, according to the suit.'

CNN Freaks Out About Buttplug Flag At Pride Parade

“ISIS Flag Spotted At Gay Pride Parade” reads the lower-third graphic on CNN, which spent almost four minutes today talking up terror as the extremist faction apparently had infiltrated a London Pride march. Except that’s pretty clearly not an ISIS flag, unless the Islamic State is now really into buttplugs instead of beheadings.

I Played 15 Minutes Of No Man’s Sky

The time I spent playing and watching No Man’s Sky left me feeling like the PS4/PC title will be more meditative than anything else. Yes, there were explosions and dogfights and giant robots bearing down on me during that session. But, as my ship skimmed over the red oceans of one planet and I walked through the mushroom grass and watched overgrown rabbit creatures skip past, I started to think of No Man’s Sky as a giant book that will live inside my PS4. If all goes well, I’ll be able to play through a chapter or two every night, come away with a weird thing to show for my travels, and compare notes with fellow adventurers. That’s all I want right now.

Fox Sports 1's take down of Seth Meyers calling it a 'secondary channel' is surprisingly entertaining

by James Dator

There is no tangible reason this should have been the least bit watchable. On the one hand you have Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler, arguably the best "Weekend Update" hosts ever, on the other there's Jay Onrait and Dan O'Toole or FOX Sports 1. The pair took exception to their network being called a "secondary channel" and skewered Meyers' poor ratings.

That doesn't make this great in itself -- what makes this good is how they were willing to joke about themselves and where viewers can find FOX Sports 1.

Charter: We won’t impose data caps after buying Time Warner Cable

all carriers suck forever

Charter yesterday promised that it won't impose any data caps or overage charges on customers for at least three years if the Federal Communications Commission allows it to buy Time Warner Cable.

Charter also said it will offer service to one million homes that are in the combined companies' franchise areas but haven't been served yet.

Charter's filing with the FCC seeks to convince the commission that consumers will benefit from the proposed transaction. The FCC previously forced Comcast to give up a plan to buy Time Warner Cable, the nation's second largest cable company. Charter is the fourth largest.

Report: Apple looks to reinstate some iOS apps that use Confederate flag

by Kyle Orland

Apple seems to be partially walking back its recent efforts to remove all apps and games featuring the Confederate battle flag from the iOS App Store. Reports and public statements from Apple suggest the company is working to reinstate games that use the flag in an "educational or historical" context.

Apple's full statement on the matter, issued to many press outlets, reads as follows:

We have removed apps from the App Store that use the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which is in violation of our guidelines. We are not removing apps that display the Confederate flag for educational or historical uses.

Despite that statement, yesterday saw the App Store removal of numerous games that use the Confederate flag merely to represent the Southern side in historical war simulations. As strategy game maker HexWar told Touch Arcade at the time, "We're in no way sympathetic to the use of the flag in an offensive way, we used it purely because historically that was the flag that was used at the time."

Two keys to rule them all: Cisco warns of default SSH keys on appliances

by Sean Gallagher

Cisco revealed a security vulnerability in a number of the company's network security virtual appliances that could give someone virtually unlimited access to them—default, pre-authorized keys for Secure Shell (SSH) sessions originally intended for "customer support" purposes. As Threatpost's Dennis Fisher reported, Cisco has released software patches that correct the problem, but there's no temporary workaround for systems that can't immediately be patched.

Cisco released an advisory on the vulnerability on June 25. There are two separate SSH key vulnerabilities for the Cisco Web Security Virtual Appliance (WSAv), Cisco Email Security Virtual Appliance (ESAv), and Cisco Security Management Virtual Appliance (SMAv).

The first is that these virtual machines, which run on VMware and KVM virtualization platforms, share a default authorized SSH key for remote login. "IP address connectivity to the management interface on the affected platform is the only requirement for the products to be exposed to this vulnerability," Cisco warned. "No additional configuration is required for this vulnerability to be exploited."

NEW PRODUCT – Lockitron Motorized Door Lock Body

Build your own smart lock with the Lockitron motorized door lock enclosure! Normally, a Lockitron has a built-in WiFi system for locking & unlocking via their App. Since they have redesigned their enclosure, we now have the ‘guts’ of the Lockitron available for hacking. There’s just enough space inside for some tasty Adafruit electronics

You get the housing for the original Lockitron, which contains a geared down DC motor, the mechanical rotation mechanism + detection switches and a 4xAA battery holder. You don’t get a control board, motor driver, or app. So this is best for makers, hackers, and other’s who want to adapt and create their own version of the Lockitron.

NewImage
NewImage

For example: wouldn’t it be cool if, instead of having to give your dog-sitter a key to your place, you could just text your home to let her in? We can build it ourselves using the new Lockitron body, Metro Mini (tiny Arduino-compatible) and a FONA 800 cellular module and other components. Check out our tutorial for how we built just such a project – those extra parts aren’t included but the tutorial does show you how to use it.

BIG_opensesameGIF

Comes with just the housing as described above, no electronic components included! You’ll probably want a bi-directional DC motor driver board that can control a 6V motor, and a microcontroller or other ‘brains’ for making the magic happen.

Even though it isn’t supported by Lockitron, the original Lockitron website will be helpful, e.g. to figure out if you can use this with your lock!

SILE – What is SILE?

firehose

hmm

SILE owes an awful lot of its heritage to TeX. It would be terribly immodest to claim that a little project like SILE was a worthy successor to the ancient and venerable creation of the Professor of the Art of Computer Programming, but… really, SILE is basically a modern rewrite of TeX.

TeX was one of the earliest typesetting systems, and had to make a lot of design decisions somewhat in a vacuum. Some of those design decisions have stood the test of time–and TeX is still an extremely well-used typesetting system more than thirty years after its inception, which is a testament to its design and performance–but many others have not. In fact, most of the development of TeX since Knuth’s era has involved removing his early decisions and replacing them with technologies which have become the industry standard: we use TrueType fonts, not METAFONTs (xetex); PDFs, not DVIs (pstex, pdftex); Unicode, not 7-bit ASCII (xetex again); markup languages and embedded programming languages, not macro languages (xmltex, luatex). At this point, the parts of TeX that people actually \em{use} are 1) the box-and-glue model, 2) the hyphenation algorithm, and 3) the line-breaking algorithm.

SILE follows TeX in each of these three areas; it contains a slavish port of the TeX line-breaking algorithm which has been tested to produce exactly the same output as TeX given equivalent input. But as SILE is itself written in an interpreted language, it is very easy to extend or alter the behaviour of the SILE typesetter.

For instance, one of the things that TeX can’t do particularly well is typesetting on a grid. This is something that people typesetting bibles really need to have. There are various hacks to try to make it happen, but they’re all horrible. In SILE, you can alter the behaviour of the typesetter and write a very short add-on package to enable grid typesetting.

Of course, nobody uses plain TeX–they all use LaTeX equivalents plus a huge repository of packages available from the CTAN. SILE does not benefit from the large ecosystem and community that has grown up around TeX; in that sense, TeX will remain streets ahead of SILE for some time to come. But in terms of capabilities, SILE is already certainly equivalent to, if not somewhat more advanced than, TeX.

No more fee: T-Mobile's new phone-upgrade program explained - Yahoo Finance

firehose

all carriers suck forever

Another change is how the installments work. Before, you made 24 monthly payments over two years. With Jump On Demand, you make payments for only 18 months, at which point you owe the remaining six payments at once (unless you turn in the device and cancel service then, or upgrade to a new phone). Few people will get to that point because the program is designed for those who upgrade frequently. The clock resets when you upgrade.

With the new program, the sales tax is also spread out as part of the monthly installments. Before, customers had to pay tax on the full cost of the device up front.

Man shoots down neighbor’s hexacopter in rural drone shotgun battle

by Cyrus Farivar
firehose

HEY OVERBEY

While we’ve heard of consumer drones getting in the way of commercial airliners and obstructing firefighting operations, we haven’t heard of many drones being shot out of the sky by a neighbor. But according to one drone pilot, that's exactly what occurred in Modesto, California on November 28, 2014.

That day, Eric Joe skipped Black Friday lines and instead went home to visit his parents. During the afternoon, Joe flew what he described to Ars as a homemade hexacopter drone. His aerial device hovered low and moved slow, logging just three and a half minutes of flight time in total.

Then, bang. A loud boom rang out over the neighboring walnut trees. Growing up on a farm, Joe instantly recognized the sound as a 12-gauge shotgun. The unknown shooter hit his apparent target in a single attempt, and Joe soon watched his drone fall from the sky.

Turbografx-16 games are… on sale… on PSN? ⊟

I don’t know how this happened, or how it got attached to a “fantasy”-themed flash sale, but I’ll take it. This weekend, three Turbografx-16 games are on sale for $1.20 each on PSN, playable on PSP, Vita, and PS3.

Bonk’s Adventure is the definite standout here, but New Adventure Island is a pretty nice Adventure Island 1-style game and Dungeon Explorer is there as well. I admit to having a good time with that one as a kid, especially after discovering the bad ending.

Anyway, if you have even the slightest desire to pick one of these up, do so now. They’re not likely to be this cheap again, and the way things seem to be going at Konami, I don’t expect them to be this available forever.

Correction: Bree Newsome Actually Just Did The Blackest Thing I’ve Ever Seen

by Damon Young

via Russian Sledges

Yesterday, I wrote that a Black president singing “Amazing Grace” at a Black church on national TV was the Blackest thing that has ever happened. I said it passed peak Blackness and entered gravitational time dilation Blackness. Dark matter, event horizon Blackness. Undiscovered dimension Blackness, redefining our understanding of how Black Blackness could be.

And then I woke up this morning. And read about Bree Newsome.

A woman identified as Bree Newsome was arrested Saturday after climbing the flagpole at the South Carolina Statehouse in Columbia, S.C., about 6:30 a.m. and removing the Confederate flag, Rashad Robinson, executive director of ColorOfChange.org, said in a statement.

And maybe I spoke too soon.
