sibyl-of-space:

lardypoison:

do you think in the 1700s there were people who were like nah man Mozart’s a total sellout I only listen to peasants beating things with sticks it’s way more authentic

I know this is a joke post but as a music major I can actually answer this with a resounding YES THIS HAS LITERALLY ALWAYS BEEN THE CASE

When the violin was invented people were pissing on its tone for being too loud and it lacking the ‘authenticity’ of the viola da gamba. People (especially French people) reacted to new Italian technologies like the freaking violin like Vivaldi was part of a heavy metal band– which would have been awesome, by the way.

Also, in the romantic period, literally every single symphony ever had a “pastoral” section where the strings are supposed to sound like bagpipes to imitate the pure, rural peasant life and reject the upper class for being too materialistic.

The long and short of it is music listeners have always been assholes and humanity is exactly the same way it was in the 1600s. Hell, when the REALLLY early French composers first heard the interval of a third (brought over from England) they were like “WHAT IS THIS DEVILRY, THE ONLY PURE INTERVALS ARE THE FOURTH AND FIFTH.” That’s right. The interval “do”-“mi” was too new age shit for them to handle.

Music history is amazing

Paul Feig Reveals Ghostbusters Character Names - Now our costumes can finally be complete.

Okay, here you go. Erin Gilbert, Jillian Holtzmann, Abby Yates and Patty Tolan. Now you know even more. https://t.co/MsQVo5iStI

— Paul Feig (@paulfeig) July 18, 2015

Paul Feig, the eternal hype master himself, revealed our four new Ghostbusters’ names in a tweet yesterday afternoon. @REALNYCGB pulled some images of the Ghostbusters crew in uniform, and tried to suss out their names based on their sewn on name tags. It felt like a real CSIenhance… enhance…” moment. But they were able to grab a few particulars, as shown in this tweet.

@paulfeig We’ve seen a lot, surely you don’t want to give everything away, but can you share the #Ghostbusters names? pic.twitter.com/JR4vFx5I5Y — NYC Ghostbusters (@REALNYCGB) July 18, 2015

Leave it to Feig, though, to totally give the fans what they ask for. You remain, as ever, a gosh darn hero.

NASA and the Life Cycle of Science and Science Fiction #SciFiSunday

by Kelly

Sam Trek

Nice piece by Karin L Cross on Tor.com discussing a panel from SDCC on the relationship between science fact, science fiction, and NASA.

At first glance, the panel description for Thursday evening’s “NASA: Turning Science Fiction into Science Fact” seemed like a bit of a dog’s breakfast—moderated by Jay Ferguson, otherwise known as Stan from Mad Men, featuring a zippy pre-recorded video briefing from the International Space Station, and including not only NASA scientists Amber Straughn (astrophysicist at the Godard Space Flight center), Kevin Hand (astrobiologist and planetary scientist), but also Adam Nimoy (son of actor Leonard Nimoy, currently developing a documentary called For the Love of Spock about his father and his most famous character), and Adithya Sood (producer of The Martian).

National Academy of Sciences set to have its first female president #WomenInSTEM

by Jessica

NewImage

Via The Washington Post.

The first female editor in chief of the prestigious journal Science is now set to become the first female president of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. On Monday the NAS announced the committee’s nomination of Marcia McNutt, a geophysicist by training, to take over when current president Ralph J. Cicerone steps down on July 1, 2016.

Members of the Academy could nominate another prospective candidate to compete with McNutt on her Dec. 15 election, but that’s never happened in the group’s history.

Along with the rest of the scientists of the Academy, McNutt is tasked with providing objective scientific advice to the U.S. government to influence sound policy decisions. McNutt is no stranger to that task: In 2014 McNutt took the controversial stance of supporting the Keystone XL pipeline, which she deemed to be the least of all available evils given the country’s dependence on fossil fuel. And just days ago, McNutt attracted the ire of climate change deniers by writing that “the time for debate has ended” in a Science editorial calling for urgent action.

The nomination is a long time coming for NAS, which was established in an Act of Congress in 1863. Science is still largely unwelcoming to women — especially when it comes to positions of power — and the nomination of a (highly qualified) female scientist is heartening, to say the least.

Of course the Miami Hurricanes unveil new uniforms at nightclub LIV

by Kevin Trahan

This is the most Miami.

Where would be the most "Miami" place for the Hurricanes football team to unveil their new jerseys? A nightclub, of course. So that's exactly what Miami did in announcing their new Adidas jerseys at the nightclub LIV.

SB Nation's State of the U was there to capture what has to be the most unique uniform unveiling in history, which also included Pusha T.

The uniforms were there, but they were hardly the main attraction. We also saw some Yeezys being lifted to the crowd, for some reason.

Unnamed bidder drops $40,000 on one of Tom Brady’s deflated balls

by Hayley Byrnes

To many, Tom Brady is the perfect man. He's just so damn dreamy.

In fact, he is sooooo popular that one individual went and paid over $40,000 for one of his deflated, discarded balls. Hey! Keep your mind out of the gutter! We are talking about footballs, ya with me?

Yes, it appears that one of the footballs used in the AFC Championship that led to "DeflateGate" was sold at an auction on Saturday for a whopping $43,740. That's gotta be over the market price for balls.

Sports auction house Lelands took an opportunity and ran with it, making one of the biggest profits ever for a football.

The buyer has not yet been identified, although we have our suspicions ...

Don't Celebrate A Tournament Win Until You've Actually Won

After losing the first round during a best-of-three semi-finals match against one of the best Guilty Gear Xrd Sign players in the world, Woshige pulled off a massive comeback to take the second. Then he turned to the crowd to celebrate.

Never turn your back on the competition, especially if the competition is Ogawa, often referred to as the “God of Guilty Gear”, and certainly not when there’s still one round left in the match. Despite his godhood, Ogawa doesn’t think twice about using his Zato to beat the living shit out of an unmanned Milla, and by the time Woshige realized his mistake it was all over.

Check out the replay below, courtesy of RoBoT SheKeiB (via Destructoid).

Still he did manage to pull off a brief upset against a player widely considered the best in the world with the entire EVO audience watching. If that’s not worth celebrating at the proper time, I don’t know what is.

The Hartford Yard Goats have a logo. With a goat!

by Marc Normandin
firehose

fuck yeah

We still have to wait until next year to see the Yard Goats, but we can see what their logo looks like now.

The New Britain Rock Cats were the Double-A franchise of the Twins last year, but they switched over to the Rockies' organization for 2015. The new parent team's first order of business? Planning a move to Hartford, and then hosting a vote to pick a new name, which would eventually -- with a little insistence on our end -- be the Yard Goats.

They won't start playing as the Yard Goats until the 2016 season, but don't worry. You can see their interpretation of a yard goat right now, in logo form, courtesy Uni Watch's Paul Lukas:

Logo for new AA Hartford Yard goats: Nifty typography but does mascot have mad goat disease?? pic.twitter.com/xPAMfRjoqX

— Paul Lukas (@UniWatch) July 8, 2015

Hey now, the goat isn't mad, just chewing on a baseball bat, anticipating the start of the Yard Goats' inaugural season just like the rest of us.

A nifty little touch for Hartford's new sports team: the Yard Goats will have the blue and green of the departed Hartford Whalers. Hey, it's not the same sport, nor is it a major-league franchise, but it's a way to live on besides retro hats and Mallrats quotes.

Apparently you can purchase gear with the logo on it right now. Cal Ripken already did!

If Cal Ripken Jr. has a @goyardgoats hat, you should too. http://t.co/RZFoG5B0ZE pic.twitter.com/Q1rlW2A2m9

Insanely Cute Cat Commercials from Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki’s Legendary Animation Shop

by Jonathan Crow
firehose

via Olena Bulygina

Back in 2010, Hayao Miyazaki’s company Studio Ghibli produced a commercial for the massive food conglomerate Nissin Seifun. The spot centers on a rotund cat named Konyara who bats lazily at a red butterfly – Nissin’s logo. Konyara is rendered in simple thick, black lines that recall Japanese sumi-e painting.

Miyazaki reportedly didn’t have much to do directly with the piece but his influence is all over it. The commercial was produced by Miyazaki’s long time collaborator Toshio Suzuki and animated by Katsuya Kondo, who did the character design for perhaps Miyazaki’s most cat-centric movie Kiki’s Delivery Service. Another Miyazaki collaborator, pop legend Akiko Yano, did the music. More to the point, Konyara looks like some of Miyazaki’s most enduring characters from Totoro to Ponyo to the Kodama from Princess Mononoke. Adorable, elegant and vital.

The commercial was so successful that Nissin commissioned two more. The second one aired in 2012 and featured a sleepy Konyara struggling to grab 40 winks while her offspring, named Ko-Konyara (trans: Little Konyara), insists on cuddling. The calligraphy on the side reads “Always together.”

The most recent Ghibli/Nissin commercial came out a few months ago. Konyara’s brood has expanded to three – the two new cats named Kuroneko and Buchi. All three tumble into the frame as Konyara presents them with a fish while text appears reading, “I’m hungry.” When the little black kitten, who looks a lot like a soot sprite from Totoro, runs off with dinner, Konyara gives a resigned sigh. It’s an expression that anyone who has spent long periods with very young children will recognize.

You can watch all three above or here.

AEP : Entrepreneurs don't have a special gene for risk—they're rich kids with safety nets

firehose

via Albener Pessoa

We’re in an era of the cult of the entrepreneur. We analyze the Tory Burches and Evan Spiegels of the world looking for a magic formula or set of personality traits that lead to success. Entrepreneurship is on the rise, and more students coming out of business schools are choosing startup life over Wall Street.

But what often gets lost in these conversations is that the most common shared trait among entrepreneurs is access to financial capital—family money, an inheritance, or a pedigree and connections that allow for access to financial stability. While it seems that entrepreneurs tend to have an admirable penchant for risk, it’s usually that access to money which allows them to take risks.

And this is a key advantage: When basic needs are met, it’s easier to be creative; when you know you have a safety net, you are more willing to take risks. “Many other researchers have replicated the finding that entrepreneurship is more about cash than dash,” University of Warwick professor Andrew Oswald tells Quartz. “Genes probably matter, as in most things in life, but not much.”

University of California, Berkeley economists Ross Levine and Rona Rubenstein analyzed the shared traits of entrepreneurs in a 2013 paper, and found that most were white, male, and highly educated. “If one does not have money in the form of a family with money, the chances of becoming an entrepreneur drop quite a bit,” Levine tells Quartz.

New research out this week from the National Bureau of Economic Research (paywall) looked at risk-taking in the stock market and found that environmental factors (not genetic) most influenced behavior, pointing to the fact that risk tolerance is conditioned over time (dispelling the myth of an elusive “entrepreneurship gene“).

Resilience is undoubtably a necessary trait for success; many notable entrepreneurs experienced success only after leading failed ventures. But the barrier to entry is very high.

For creative professions, starting a new venture is the ultimate privilege. Many startup founders do not take a salary for some time. The average cost to launch a startup is around $30,000, according to the Kauffman Foundation. Data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor show that more than 80% of funding for new businesses comes from personal savings and friends and family.

“Following your dreams is dangerous,” a 31-year-old woman who runs in social entrepreneurship circles in New York, and asked not to be named, told Quartz. “This whole bulk of the population is being seduced into thinking that they can just go out and pursue their dream anytime, but it’s not true.”

So while yes, there’s certainly a lot of hard work that goes into building something, there’s also a lot of privilege involved—a factor that is often underestimated.

Team USA demolishes Japan 59-12 for American football gold medal

by Rodger Sherman

'They turned heads with an 82-0 win in the semifinals over France, a team which had beaten Australia by 50 points, which had in turn beaten South Korea by 41.

NFL, CFL, and Division I players are unavailable for the tournament, so the USA roster consists of recently graduated college players hoping to impress professional coaches with their play in the tournament. The team was coached by former Colorado and Boise State coach Dan Hawkins.'

The United States didn't need to prove it was the best country at playing football, but it did anyway, demolishing Japan 59-12 in the gold medal game of the IFAF World Championship.

Team USA showed the enormous gap between itself and the rest of the world in America's most popular sport, demolishing its closest competition Japan 59-12 in the gold medal game of the IFAF (International Federation of American Football) World Championship.

The Americans dominated all tournament long. The US had already beaten Japan 43-18, and managed to win even more convincingly this time around. They turned heads with an 82-0 win in the semifinals over France, a team which had beaten Australia by 50 points, which had in turn beaten South Korea by 41.

NFL, CFL, and Division I players are unavailable for the tournament, so the USA roster consists of recently graduated college players hoping to impress professional coaches with their play in the tournament. The team was coached by former Colorado and Boise State coach Dan Hawkins.

This year's tournament took place in Canton, Ohio, the first ever rendition of the tournament held in the United States. Japan won the first tournaments in 1999 and 2003, but America hadn't sent a team to those tournaments. Team USA started sending teams with the 2007 championship, and although Japan took them to double overtime in that year's gold medal game, the Americans remain undefeated in IFAF play.

Coming in just behind the United States this year, Japan took silver for the third straight tournament and Mexico took bronze, its first medal since the United States began competing.

Some stats from America's tournament:

  • Team USA outscored its opponents 214-36, with an average scoreline of 50-9.
  • Team USA outgained its opponents 1855 to 672, over 1,000 yards in just four games.
  • Team USA's opponents ran for -11 yards during the tournament. Team USA ran for 869.
  • Team USA scored 29 touchdowns, including five defensive touchdowns. They allowed four touchdowns total.
  • Team USA punted seven times in four games.
