Canada's taxpayers may be the first victims of the Heartbleed bug that put the web on high alert last week. According to the Canada Revenue Agency, 900 social insurance numbers (SINs) were stolen by hackers exploiting the security vulnerability. Even on a small scale, the breach is tantamount to identity theft, and is a situation the CRA had worked hard to avoid.
Taxpayer information stolen in a brief six-hour period
In an official statement issued this morning, the CRA said that it removed public access to its online services when news broke about Heartbleed last week, and worked "around the clock" to patch the bug. However, the taxpayer info was still stolen in a brief six-hour period. "We are currently going through the painstaking process of analyzing other fragments of data," said the agency, "some that may relate to businesses, that were also removed."
The CRA does state that no other breaches before or after the one in question have taken place. The agency is now in the process of contacting affected individuals via registered mail, has set up a dedicated 1-800 number for people in need of information, and will provide credit protection services at no cost. It will not, however, be contacting people by phone or email, outlets it believes can be undermined by fraudsters.

hodadIts not a coincidence that this announcement comes a week after students occupied Hanlon’s office demanding, among other things, an improved record of recruiting and retaining faculty of color. This creates 30-40 new endowed faculty positions; let’s see who gets them.
News of the $100 million anonymous gift to support the College’s academic enterprise, the largest single outright donation in Dartmouth’s history, was widely hailed as a powerful endorsement of President Phil Hanlon’s vision of an institution at the forefront of teaching and scholarly work.

firehose'The family of toddler Mohammad Musa had kept the boy in hiding after authorities pressed charges accusing him of trying to kill police officers after a neighbourhood brawl in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore.

The case stems from an incident Jan. 31, when power company officials went into the boy’s neighbourhood to disconnect illegal power lines allowing people to get electricity to their homes without paying for it. Such pilferage is common in Pakistan, and attempts to disconnect customers can be met with violence.

That altercation sparked police to open an attempted murder investigation into 30 people in the neighbourhood, including the father of the toddler and his unnamed son, police officer Atif Zulfiqar said earlier this week.
Yaseen said police came to his house multiple times looking for the son. He said the family told police that the boy was less than a year old, but officers demanded they take him to court. The boy received bail and wept as police took his fingerprints.

Vending machines that serve up pot have existed for some time, but up until now have only lived behind counters at medical marijuana dispensaries. Now, the very first weed vending machine that customers can access has finally made its debut in Avon, Colorado. Herbal Elements, a local medical cannabis collective, today received a ZaZZZ vending machine manufactured by American Green. The dispensary made its excited announcement this afternoon:
The vending machine will be officially installed tomorrow (a full week before 4/20), but will only be accessible to patients with valid identification. (Sorry, recreational smokers.) Stephen Shearin, COO of American Green's parent company Tranzbyte, told The Cannabist that he envisions the machine being a boon for shyer folk. "First, think of automated checkouts at the market. Not for everyone, but for those who use it, they love it. Next consider a regular or perhaps a somewhat shy customer who is capable of self-service." Of course, even though the vending machine may well boost legitimate sales of cannabis, don't expect to see them out in the open.

Looking for a silver lining in the mess stirred up by the discovery of a major flaw in the software used by many internet sites to encrypt your passwords and other private data?
Good news: The so-called “Heartbleed” bug has delayed tax day.
But only if you are Canadian. US taxpayers still have to file by this coming Tuesday, April 15. And those who use the Turbotax tax-preparation software may want to change their passwords, if they recently visited a Turbotax support website.
The Heartbleed bug affected servers that relied on the OpenSSL encryption software—among them those at Canada’s Revenue Agency. A patch for the problem is now available, but Canadian tax officials shut down their filing site on April 9 and announced that they’ll extend the country’s April 30 tax deadline for at least the number of days that the site remains shuttered. (The site was still down as of April 12 at 3pm.)
The US Internal Revenue Service, on the other hand, issued a one-paragraph statement saying its systems weren’t affected by the bug, and took the opportunity to remind taxpayers to “continue filing their tax returns as they normally would in advance of the April 15 deadline.”
Some US taxpayers, however, might not have escaped the bug’s bite entirely. Most major US tax-related online services appear to have used something other than OpenSSL to keep their customer’s data private. At least, they weren’t listed as potentially vulnerable on lists maintained by Mashable.
The United Services Automobile Association (which offers tax-preparation services too) and Intuit, the makers of Turbotax, however, confirmed that some of their servers used OpenSSL. Both companies said they applied the patch intended to solve the problem before the bug’s existence was made public last week. Intuit also said that “the vast majority of our servers do not use the version of SSL that was vulnerable,” and “We’re confident that TurboTax is safe to you [sic].”
If you’re skeptical, however, security experts recommend that you change your passwords on the sites, now that each has applied the relevant code fix. It’s probably a good idea to do it, and file your returns, by Tuesday.

Google is taking Washington politics seriously. Like many other massive corporations, the company is working hard to gain and wield influence among lawmakers. After largely avoiding politics in its earlier years, the search giant has become one of the top five lobbying powers over the past two years. In 2012, it ranked above all others, save General Electric. It's only natural that a company as large as Google would be involved in politics, but the scale of its efforts in Washington — and the speed at which it's become a major player — is striking. The Washington Post has taken a fascinating deep dive into Google's efforts in politics, which extend beyond lobbying and campaign contributions to more innovative forms of steering the debate and gaining influence.
