Just when it looked like the New York Times Company was finally getting its act together… a huge personnel change comes along to shake things up completely.
The company behind the “Grey Lady” announced on its own website today (paywall) that its executive editor, Jill Abramson, is “unexpectedly” leaving. She will be replaced by managing editor Dean Baquet, who was previously the editor of the Los Angeles Times.
Investors don’t seem to be taking kindly to the news. The stock price had been under pressure before the announcement, but was at session lows at the time of writing; it is down about 4.4% today, wiping out its gains for the year so far.

There is a massive amount of speculation on social media at the moment as to why the shock departure is taking place. Here is one of the NYT’s own reporters on the matter:
The change was attributed, by Arthur Sulzberger Jr, to "an issue with management in the newsroom". No further details yet.—
Ravi Somaiya (@ravisomaiya) May 14, 2014
The Times’ own Twitter list of its staffers is also worth following, if you like obsessing about this kind of thing.
Earlier this month, Arthur Gregg Sulzberger, the son of the company’s chairman, had led an innovation report into ways the newsroom operates. It’s not yet clear whether this was in any way related.
Abramson has been in the top editing position at the times since late 2011. One of her four tattoos is a letter “T” in the newspaper’s font, on her back.
It’s also worth noting that she is not the only top editor that has been ousted today. The editor-in-chief of France’s top newpspapers, Le Monde, Natalie Nougayrède, also quit today, after a long-running newsroom conflict over changes she was trying to introduce.
The Nintendo 2DS is on sale for $99 at Target from now through Saturday, May 17, Nintendo of America announced today.
The handheld's regular price is $129.99, making the sale price a discount of 24 percent. Target's offer applies only to standalone models of the 2DS, which are available in North America in two colors: Crimson Red and Electric Blue, both with black backs. Neither unit is currently in stock on Target's website, but both are available for in-store pickup.
The 2DS is a cheaper model of the 3DS that excises the device's stereoscopic 3D functionality and features a slate form factor instead of a clamshell design. Nintendo announced the handheld last August and released it in October.
Nintendo also released a new 30-second TV spot for the 2DS today; you can watch it above.

The pill is disintegrating, lodged in my throat like a swollen seed, sprouting dry and ticklish as it reaches back toward tongue and lips. I need a drink, to sluice it out, wash it down and carry myself away. The lights pulse like a migraine and the music is a song I recognise. Stumbling toward the stage, I grab at the singer, trying to tell him that I know the lyrics and how important it is that I know the lyrics, trying to drink him dry. And then it hits me – I just invaded Nick Cave’s personal space.
No Wave is short, free and noisy.
The setting is a club in New York. It’s the eighties and an ocean of noise has been sucked into the tides of the Hudson River to lap at the streets and the dark subtarranean rooms of the city. Every night seems to end in disappointment and if you don’t enjoy the music, there’s not much point in sticking around, but there’s something wonderful and chilling about this moment frozen in time.
This little treat is the work of Dorian SRed and bandmate Trevor Reveur/Waveland, who are currently working on an “adventure and Social Science Fiction story”, as well as composing the music for cybercorp simulator Advertcity. I’d planned to listen to Larry Heard all day while remembering aliens and the folks who imagine them but I’ve ended up with No Wave commandeering a tab in my browser and I don’t feel right clicking ‘x’.
Nauseating and unnerving as the experience sometimes is (and in the game), I’d quite like to lose myself in music, lights and strangers right about now.

A document included in the trove of National Security Agency files released with Glenn Greenwald’s book No Place to Hide details how the agency’s Tailored Access Operations (TAO) unit and other NSA employees intercept servers, routers, and other network gear being shipped to organizations targeted for surveillance and install covert implant firmware onto them before they’re delivered.
These Trojan horse systems were described by an NSA manager as being “some of the most productive operations in TAO because they pre-position access points into hard target networks around the world.”
The document, a June 2010 internal newsletter article by the chief of the NSA’s Access and Target Development department (S3261) includes photos (above) of NSA employees opening the shipping box for a Cisco router and installing beacon firmware with a “load station” designed specifically for the task.

Visionary vintage children’s book celebrates gender equality, ethnic diversity, and space exploration with a black female astronaut two decades before that became a reality
The art style in this book is gorgeous, too. So sad it’s out of print.

Fans could not provide support to Bronco commit Antoine Turner without approval, because it could've hurt his NCAA eligibility.
On Tuesday, a story came out about a Boise State JUCO commit named Antoine Turner, who is homeless until the start of summer classes. Broncos fans obviously wanted to find out how they could help, but the school asked them not to, since it would be against NCAA rules.
It announced that it would apply for a waiver to provide special assistance to Turner:
We need to make it clear to your viewers and Bronco fans that it is NOT permissible within NCAA rules for boosters of Boise State athletics to provide benefits to Mr. Turner. That would include money, loans, gifts, discounts, transportation costs, etc.
While Mr. Turner's need is abundantly clear, it is not permissible for Boise State, the athletics department or supporters of the athletics department to assist Mr. Turner at this time. Once Mr. Turner arrives on campus for the start of the summer school program, he will be well taken care of -- receiving full tuition, room and board, books, fees etc. In the meantime, the compliance office is exploring a potential waiver with the NCAA that would allow us to provide assistance prior to the start of summer school.
Outrage obviously followed, because people were angry this kind of situation even required a waiver in the first place. Our own Boise State site, One Bronco Nation Under God, wrote that the "NCAA just can't get it right."
However, waiver process and all, the NCAA announced on Wednesday that Boise State will be able to provide Turner with assistance:
After Boise State's request last night, the school may provide immediate assistance to football student-athlete Antoine Turner.

Meghan Hetrick page from ‘Fairest: In All The Land’
In the overwhelmingly male comic book industry, it has been a challenge for some editors and readers to see the ever growing number of talented women currently trying to make a name for themselves. With that in mind, ComicsAlliance offers Hire This Woman, a recurring feature designed for comics readers as well as editors and other professionals, where we shine the spotlight on a female comics pro on the ascendance. Some of these women will be at the very beginning of their careers, while others will be more experienced but not yet “household names.”
Artist Meghan Hetrick recently broke into comics with work on Fairest, Joker’s Daughter, and DC’s recent Lois Lane one-shot. You might also know her from this informative and entertaining tutorial on how to draw breasts correctly. She’s got a variety of other projects on the horizon as well, as she told us in this Hire This Woman interview.
Meghan Hetrick pages from ‘Joker’s Daughter’ One-Shot (click to enlarge)
ComicsAlliance: What is your preferred form of creative output?
Meghan Hetrick: My editors might shoot me for this, but i prefer painting. But painting comics, so it still works.
CA: Do you work on paper or digitally?
MH: I stick to traditional work mainly because I’m stubborn, but also because there’s just something captured with physical artwork that you can’t get with digital. Not knocking digital at all, the work is beautiful, I just prefer the texture and process of working on a physical piece. Plus, then you can sell the original ![]()
Lady Death by Meghan Hetrick
CA: What’s your background/training?
MH: Aside from the requisite art courses in grade school, and one year of community college, I’m completely self taught. Sometimes being extraordinarily stubborn and inquisitive can be a good thing ![]()
CA: How would you describe your creative style?
MH: Umm… I don’t know if i can, really, as that’s one of the more difficult questions to answer as an artist. I can describe it best by listing my influences, which generally tend to be mid-’90s comic artists (yes, the Marvel and Image era), as well as a healthy love of Frazetta, Renaissance art, Art Nouveau, Expressionism, Eastern art…. y’know what, the list could go on forever. I’m influenced by everything that catches my eye, and sparks my interest, and if I really like it, I’ll try to figure out how those effects are achieved, and it ends up getting integrated/assimilated into my own work.
CA: What projects have you worked on in the past? What are you currently working on?
MH: Past projects, for the comics end of things, are a few pages in Fairest #20, three stories in the Fairest: In All the Land graphic novel, Joker’s Daughter #1 (the one shot), and a few pages in Lois Lane. That’s the published stuff, at least. As for what i’m currently working on, I have BODIES through Vertigo, and a few others up my sleeve that i can’t talk about just yet.
Page from ‘Lois Lane’ one-shot by Meghan Hetrick
CA: Approximately how long does it take you to draw a 20-page issue?
MH: I generally average about a page a day, for pencils and inks, so including doing the breaks, about 25 days or so. Keep in mind that i tend to do about 12-16 hour days when i’m on a tight deadline.
CA: What is your dream project?
MH: Can’t talk about it, because it’s no longer a dream. Wait until Comic-Con in San Diego for that one. But, to whet people’s appetite a bit, I’d freaking LOVE to get my hands on the Darkness, Witchblade, or Magdalena. Still love those characters.
CA: Who are some comic creators that inspire you?
MH: Oh man, this is going to be a long list. I learned to draw from copying pages of Joe Madureira and Michael Turner’s. Adam Hughes’ work introduced me to Art Nouveau (yes, it’s because of him that i looked up who the hell Alphonse Mucha was, and that opened the floodgate of obsession). Chris Bachalo for storytelling. Marc Silvestri, Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo for setting the tone of a page, in terms of the darker, moodier, yet still beautiful artwork. Scott Hampton introduced me to painted comics, with David Mack reinforcing it. And then pretty much everyone else ever, who i’ve bought a book of, just because of the art.

CA: What are some comics that have inspired you either growing up or as an adult?
MH: I had a weird phase starting out, in that I used to buy comics not really for the story, but mainly for the art. The story was a bonus, and if i got hooked I’d track down everything that I could for it. Because of that, my inspiration map is all over the place. Joe Mad’s run on Uncanny X-Men, Chris Bachalo on Generation X, and Michael Turner’s Witchblade were the foundations of my art.. Lucifer and Fables were my jump off points in terms of “Hey, there are comics without spandex? AND THEY’RE AWESOME!” so those will always have a special place in my heart. I’m hooked on American Vampire. I still love Deadpool and other highly irreverent comics that aren’t afraid to poke fun at their own medium.
CA: What’s your ideal professional environment?
MH: Sunny, surrounded by my critters, and with a cup of fantastic coffee within arms reach.
CA: What do you most want our readers and industry professionals to know about your work?
MH: That it’s an ever evolving process. What i do today probably won’t look like what I did two months ago, or will do two months from now. I’m still very, VERY new to this industry, at least at a professional level, and i really hope that i can share some of that exuberance and just awe with people.
Conan by Meghan Hetrick
CA: How can editors and readers keep up with your work and find your contact information?
MH: My website is probably the most professional way of going about it, which is www.meghanhetrick.com. I guess that means i should probably update that thing, eh?

Seth Kushner
Prolific photographer (Leaping Tall Buildings), comic book writer (Creator-Owned Heroes) and general mover and shaker in the Brooklyn (and wider) comic book community Seth Kushner was diagnosed with leukemia last month. The 40-year-old husband and father has been forced to cancel convention appearances as he receives chemotherapy and is now awaits a bone marrow transplant.
Here’s Kushner’s wife Tera’s update, which outlines how those interested in potentially helping Kushner and others requiring a bone marrow transplant can contribute:
As you may know, Seth will need a bone marrow transplant. His transplant doctor is starting the process to search for potential donors through the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), which maintains a national registry of potential matching bone marrow donors. Many of you have inquired about how you can find out if you qualify to be a potential donor.
Basically what you do is register via online or phone & swab your cheek. Here are a couple organizations you can use.
Delete Blood Cancer – I personally went to this website, registered online from my iPhone, received a swap in the mail with 24 hours, mailed back the swab & was told it will show up in the register within 3 weeks. They claim to be the quickest.
(deletebloodcancer.org)National Donor Registry - this is the registry that is directly associated with the NMDP.(BeTheMatch.org)
More specific details are laid out on the websites above. If you decide you want to be a donor, you can:
• register online (they will send you a kit through the mail to swab your cheek that you will mail back- prepaid postage included)
•go to an approved center to swab your cheek (locations listed on sites)
•organize a bone marrow donation drive or “swab” party.
As far as I can see, the basic criteria for potential donors are:
•age
•health
•lives in the US
•not in the US military
•haven’t already joined the registry
•willing to be a potential donor to anyone**Perhaps the most important point about volunteering through the national registry is that youcannot specifically sign up to donate to Seth. It is a big commitment to join the registry, and your efforts can be enormously rewarding, but the process is designed to find patients anywhere in the country or world who may benefit by being a match to you. Therefore it does not provide an option to specify who you wish to help.
Kushner’s diagnosis follows the creator’s success last month funding a $15,000 Kickstarter to print Schmuck, his 168-page trade paperback autobio graphic novel featuring the work of 22 cartoonists.
If you aren’t able to supply bone marrow, Kushner and his family can be offered words of encouragement through his social media channels including Twitter and Facebook.

In Hear This, A.V. Club writers sing the praises of songs they know well—some inspired by a weekly theme and some not, but always songs worth hearing. This week, in celebration of the new Black Keys record, our favorite songs by duos.
Super-duo Gnarls Barkley hit it huge in 2006 with “Crazy,” but CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse never found another hit that size. It wasn’t for lack of trying: 2008’s The Odd Couple is painfully underrated, mostly because it doesn’t have anything nearly as grabby as “Crazy” on it. But the single “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” is absolutely gorgeous, a slow-burning trip-hop number that owes a bit to the king of that genre, Portishead’s “Sour Times.” It’s a desperately lonely torch song about the end of a relationship, one that Green doesn’t want to let go. The music hangs ...

Lion, Tiger And Bear Raised Together After Rescue From Drug Dealer
Baloo the bear, Leo the lion, and Shere Khan the tiger were found locked in a basement undernourished and abused. The trio was originally owned by a drug dealer who didn’t properly care for them, leading to neglect and poor health. In 2001, Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, a nonprofit that cares for animals in need, came to the rescue, and took them to Locust Grove, Georgia, where they were treated for injuries. They could have been separated but since at the moment of the rescue they were already friends, the sanctuary decided to keep them together. The abuse they suffered together as babies has bonded them into a loving brotherhood that does not recognize species.

firehoseTW: domestic violence

Greg Hardy was released on bond Wednesday following allegations levied by his girlfriend that the Panthers defensive end threw her on a couch covered with guns and threatened to shoot her.
Greg Hardy was released on bond Wednesday after being arrested Tuesday following an altercation with his girlfriend, Nicole Holder, the Charlotte Observer reports. Hardy was charged with misdemeanor assault on a female and communicating a threat. Holder alleged that she sustained "large areas of bruising and swelling" after being slammed against a futon and strangled during an argument at Hardy's home.
Holder reportedly filed for a restraining order against Hardy. The warrant for his arrest said that the Carolina Panthers defensive end made his threat "in a manner and under circumstances which would cause a reasonable person to believe that the threat was likely to be carried out."
The incident allegedly occurred at an "after party" in uptown Charlotte. Both Hardy and Holder were reportedly intoxicated. Details of how an altercation began are unclear. The Observer revealed details of the fight itself:
The arrest warrants accuse the Panther lineman of throwing girlfriend Nicole Holder to the floor and into a bathtub, slamming her against a Futon and "strangling" during an argument at his home.
According to Holder, she was thrown on to a couch covered "in assault weapons and/or shotguns." At that point, Hardy allegedly bragged that the assault weapons were loaded, and threatened to shoot Holder if she "went to the media or reported his assaults to anyone." She alleged that Hardy has 25-30 firearms: "AK-47s, automatic-looking weapons, shotguns, rifles and pistols."
Police responded to a call placed by Hardy at 4:18 a.m. ET. Bond was set at $15,000 for the assault charge and $2,000 for the threat. Hardy was jailed overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning. It is common practice for suspects in domestic violence cases to be denied bond for at least 24 hours after an incident to allow a "cooling-off period," according to the Observer.
Upon Hardy's release, Mecklenburg County Judge Becky Thorne Tin told him not to have any contact with Holder -- even if she attempted to contact him -- and to begin attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings three times per week. Hardy's next court appearance is tentatively scheduled for June 27.
Hardy responded "yes, ma'am" when asked if understood the terms of his release.
Chris Fialko, Hardy's attorney, told Tin that Holder initiated the confrontation, attacking Hardy and a friend, Sammy Curtis. Holder refused to leave Hardy's home, according to Fialko. After the incident, Hardy called 911, a fact that isn't disputed by Holder's representation.
Holder did not attend Wednesday's hearing, but stood outside the courtroom. Her attorney, Stephen Goodwin, said that Curtis held down Holder as Hardy placed the 911 call, and insisted that his client was not the aggressor "by a long shot."
"She weighs less than 120 pounds," Goodwin said. "Mr. Hardy (is an) All-Pro (defensive end), strong, big.
"... It was a fight. He threw her around the room."
The Panthers released a brief statement Tuesday addressing the situation:
"We are very disappointed to learn of the allegations involving Greg and are concerned for all parties as we continue to investigate."
Hardy is on track to play the 2014 season under Carolina's franchise tag. Prior to being designated the team's franchise player, he was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the start of NFL free agency last March. The Panthers have expressed interest in signing the defensive end to a long-term contract. It is unclear yet how Hardy's off-field incident will affect his status on the team.
Should Hardy miss playing time due to incident, rookie Kony Ealy could be shuffled into a big role on the opposite end of the defensive line from Charles Johnson. Fellow defensive end Frank Alexander has also had off-field trouble this offseason, earning a four-game suspension to start the 2014 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

firehose'Orci has been drafted to act alone as a rookie director—one who’s already personally despised by many Star Trek fans—and set up to be the patsy if it fails.
Is it any coincidence that the decision was made after Orci’s associate J.J. Abrams left to take over Star Wars—another franchise that’s being closely watched, by fans who have expressed similarly intense misgivings? Is it not now totally obvious that Abrams has engineered the perfect distraction from Star Wars, having Star Trek 3 take on such an explosively controversial choice for director? Can’t you all see that this is just a false flag operation? What will it take for you to open your eyes?'

Sure to add flame to the conspiracy theories of Star Trek Truthers everywhere, Variety has confirmed that the next Star Trek film will indeed be directed by franchise writer and explainer Roberto Orci. Rumblings that Orci was the frontrunner for the job began with the news that he had split from longtime partner Alex Kurtzman, with each hoping to concentrate on their own filmmaking endeavors. Still, these early intelligence reports were more or less ignored, due to the fact that Orci has never directed anything, and seemed unlikely to pose a threat to other, more experienced candidates. That a man without a single directing credit would ever be placed in charge of a massive, multimillion-dollar franchise as his filmmaking debut seemed as illogical as, say, the idea that a handful of men armed with box cutters could commit the greatest act of terrorism on American soil, to cite the argument ...
