Newswire: Glenn Greenwald loves Sony, now that they’ve bought the rights to his Edward Snowden book

Like a columnist jumping all over a movie he hasn’t seen, Sony Pictures has pounced on the movie rights to Glenn Greenwald’s new book, No Place To Hide: Edward Snowden, The NSA, And The U.S. Surveillance State.
“I’m very happy to be working with Amy Pascal, Doug Belgrad and the team at Sony Pictures Entertainment, who have a successful track record of making thoughtful and nuanced true-life stories that audiences want to see,” said Greenwald of the same executives he had previously accused of producing “the ultimate hagiography of the most secretive arm of America’s National Security State” when they made Zero Dark Thirty, but now heartily endorses, because they’re giving him lots of money.
“We are extremely proud that […] Glenn chose Sony to bring this riveting story to the big screen,” added Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, the Sony subsidiary Greenwald likened to ...

Big Black Bird: what depression after a cancer diagnosis feels like

It's watching Pootie Tang with them, again, and pretending like you don't even mind the smell of weed, really, it's fine. Somerville is still woefully devoid of food trucks aside from occasional special events, but starting tonight, there will be a weekly duo of trucks parked in the loading dock area behind Brooklyn Boulders, which is located partway between Union Square and Porter Square, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Taco Party, a vegetarian taco truck, is leading the charge; owner Keith Schubert tells Eater that the goal is to create "a sort of mini food truck park (like you would find in Portland, OR or Austin, TX)." He wants to foster a "patio-like vibe where folks can come relax after work and eat some good food from some of Boston's best trucks."
Each week, Taco Party will be joined by a revolving guest truck — tonight, it's Fugu Truck. They'll start off with a basic assortment of tables and chairs, but a tent and picnic tables will appear in coming weeks. The fun will last until October.

A Creationist Schism Is Tearing Apart A Christian College

The evolution-creationism debate has returned to Dayton, Tennessee—the site of the Scopes Monkey Trial. Except this time, the venue is not a courtroom but a Christian college, where faculty members have resigned and students have mounted protests. The issue? Whether Adam and Eve were the progenitors of humanity.

WotC vs. Cryptozoic
firehose'Cryptozoic develops and publishes the digital trading card game, Hex: Shards of Fate, a clone of the world famous tabletop collectable trading card game, Magic: The Gathering®, and its digital expressions, Magic Online® and the Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers® franchise.'
They funded a $2.2M Kickstarter last year. Their closed beta started about three weeks ago.
Escapist: "The lawsuit cites a post on Threshold: The Hex Podcast that lays out the similarities between Hex and Magic. A chart in the lawsuit summarizes all the similarities between the two games, including the number of starting life, the win conditions, tapping cards to activate actions, five types of spell and creature colors, analogous card types, identical turn structure, and many other similarities."
Cryptozoic isn't a minor CCG publisher: they have more than three dozen licensed board and card games, including licenses for the LotR and Hobbit movie franchises, DC Comics, the Walking Dead, Penny Arcade, Pen Ward's stuff (Adventure Time, Bravest Warriors, etc.), Capcom, and Ubisoft. They're also the company that picked up the KS clusterfuck "Doom that Came to Atlantic City".

This Hat is Making Eyes at You #WearableWednesday
firehosevia Bunker.jordan
You may recall that Lucas Morgan made a great EL wire shirt a while back. It looks like this mad tech artist is at it again with a new top hat called “All Seeing Eye”. This is a great example of Adafruit’s NeoPixels — 704 to be exact! Two eyes move around randomly and appear to be staring at passersby. They are almost a bit spooky, like something you would see in a zombie flick (zombies beware!). Actually, Lucas has a love for music fests, so chances are this hat will be on tour.

The project started with a mock-up using the 30 LEDs/meter and then moved off to the 144 LEDs/meter. That’s a lot of bling! One of the issues Lucas faced was finding a hat that was a true cylinder. Apparently most top hats have a slight taper, but he did manage to find a decent one at a costume shop. The next step was aligning the strips, and conveniently there are holes near the LEDs that he was able to pin to help line up the rows. As far as hardware, he used a Tinyduino Microcontroller and a level shifter to convert the power to 5V for the NeoPixels. Not to get all Adafruit here, but the 4 Button Ribbon Cable Input Pad is a really cute way to operate the different animations on the hat. There’s a lot more detail on his blog Enviral Designs, so get ready for some cool pics.

Okay, enough with all the details; you know what’s coming and we’ve got the tutorial all ready for you — the Guggenhat. It’s a hat inspired by the famous Guggenheim Museum with its delightful curves. It will be your own personal billboard, so you can go to your next red carpet event (or graduation) in style. Coil NeoPixels like a pro and have your own original message out there for the world to see.

Every Wednesday is Wearable Wednesday here at Adafruit! We’re bringing you the blinkiest, most fashionable, innovative, and useful wearables from around the web and in our own original projects featuring our wearable Arduino-compatible platform, FLORA. Be sure to post up your wearables projects in the forums or send us a link and you might be featured here on Wearable Wednesday!

AfricanFossils.org Virtual Lab: View and Download 3D Models of Human Ancestors #3DThursday #3DPrinting #3DScanning
firehoseprint skull pile

An excellent proof of concept for how 3D scanning and 3D printing can be of benefit to science and science education, this world class collection of fossil finds from Lake Turkana in East Africa has been made available to world as a digital exhibition thanks to a partnership between Dr. Louise Leakey with Autodesk:
This virtual lab showcases a spectacular collection of fossils and artifacts found mostly at Lake Turkana in East Africa. The digital collection of animals, human ancestors, as well as ancient stone tools offers a unique tool for scholars and enthusiasts to explore and interact with the collection online.
It also provides an opportunity to download models for 3-D printing as well as to comment and share images of your favorite printed fossil objects on our forum. Additional specimens will be added regularly to this online collection so please visit us often. Welcome to the lab!
And from a news announcement around the launch of the project back in 2011:
Dr. Louise Leakey (TBI, Stony Brook University) and 3D software company Autodesk have teamed up with the National Museums of Kenya to create an ongoing interactive showcase famous fossil discoveries from the Turkana Basin in virtual 3D.
AfricanFossils.org enables visitors to explore a virtual “lab” filled with numerous famous fossil finds which can be enlarged, rotated, and viewed from any angle. While offering a limited selection of fossils at the moment, Leakey plans to continually update the library to comprise not only fossils of human ancestors but the other prehistoric animals with which they shared their environment.
Leakey was awarded a grant from San Rafael, CA-based Autodesk which enabled her to work with the National Museums of Kenya to digitize a number of scientifically important fossils in the Museum’s collection. The process involved making numerous photos of each specimen from a variety of angles and using Autodesk’s proprietary technology to create an immersive virtual environment in which visitors can closely examine some of the most important pieces of evidence for human evolution.
“This is a fantastic use of this revolutionary new technology,” says Leakey. “People from all over the world will now be able to enjoy these fossils which previously were available only to scientists visiting the museum.”

Spritz Integration
firehoseuhh
A couple months ago we came across a new technology called Spritz. It’s a tool that helps you read faster. Given how far behind I typically am in my Old Reader queue, we thought it would be a good thing to try out in the application. We were so happy with the results that we’ve decided to roll out the beta Spritz integration to our users today.
To enable Spritz, you’ll need to go into your settings and click the Spritz checkbox. You’ll then see the Spritz icon in your feeds which you can click on (or use the ‘i’ hotkey). The first time through you’ll need to create a Spritz account, but after that it should be clear sailing and fast reading.
Here’s an article about the new functionality on TNW.
Let us know what you think!
