San Diego Comic-Con Doesn't Want To Address Its Harassment Problem Because People Might Think It Has A Harassment Problem

by Chris Sims

San Diego Comic Con refuses to institute a formal harassment policy
San Diego’s Comic-Con International has a problem that it doesn’t want to address. See, a few weeks back, a group called GeeksForCONsent launched a petition urging Comic-Con to adopt a formal harassment policy in place of the broad, basically unenforceable “code of conduct” that’s currently in place. Like many conventions, SDCC has a huge problem with women — particularly women cosplayers — being harassed by other con-goers and dubious media “professionals”, and the present policy offers victims little recourse.

Comic-Con’s existing policy, which can be found in its 200-page programming guide and on the event’s website, is as follows:

Attendees must respect common sense rules for public behavior, personal interaction, common courtesy, and respect for private property. Harassing or offensive behavior will not be tolerated. Comic-Con reserves the right to revoke, without refund, the membership and badge of any attendee not in compliance with this policy. Persons finding themselves in a situation where they feel their safety is at risk or who become aware of an attendee not in compliance with this policy should immediately locate a member of security, or a staff member, so that the matter can be handled in an expeditious manner.

GeeksForCONsent’s petition asks that Comic-Con amend the policy thusly:

  • A harassment reporting mechanism and visible, easy to find on-site support for people who report harassment.
  • Signs throughout the convention publicizing the harassment policy and zero-tolerance enforcement mechanisms.
  • Information for attendees on how to report harassment.
  • A one-hour training for volunteers on how to respond to harassment reports.

As a response to the petition, David Glanzer, Comic-Con’s director of marketing and public relations — someone whose actual job is to talk to the media about this sort of thing — gave a remarkable interview to CBR‘s Albert Ching where he suggested, astonishingly, that instituting a more explicit anti-harassment policy would be a problem in and of itself, because people in the media and the attendee base might think that Comic-Con has a problem with harassment.

…because we’re really an international show, and have 3,000 members of the media, I think the story would be harassment is such an issue at Comic-Con that they needed to post these signs around there. Now, people within the industry, and fans, know that isn’t the case, but the general public out there, and I think the news media, might look at this as, “Why would you, if this wasn’t such a bad issue, why do you feel the need to single out this one issue and put signs up about it?” I think that’s a concern.

That’s not really how rules work.

We have rules because there are problems; so that we know what to do when those problems arise. Harassment — sexual and otherwise — is a problem, and it’s not an outlier at San Diego Comic-Con, it’s something that can happen to anyone who wears a costume and even to a good number of people who don’t. As anyone who’s been to SDCC or follows media reports of the problems that arise there, the current rules against harassment are clearly not doing the job. But the organizers are manifestly more concerned with the patently false idea that even acknowledging the problem would create a bigger problem, rather than addressing the reality of the situation for the people who actually attend their event.

Glanzer’s extremely dubious claim that a deliberately broad policy makes it easier for Comic-Con to sort out all of these problems (that the con doesn’t want to admit it has) can be undermined by the briefest of challenges. Sure, on the surface the existing policy is not a bad set of rules, and if nothing else it does have that line about “harassing or offensive behavior.” But then you hit that bit about “Common Sense,” and that’s where the problems show up.

1. As much as it might seem like there is given the name, there’s no actual defined consensus of what “Common Sense” means. You might think that it’s perfectly appropriate to ask someone dressed as Chun-Li to turn herself upside down and do the splits because that’s what Chun-Li does in the game, but when you’re speaking to an actual person, it’s really not. All this policy tells you to do is to act the way you think you should, and creeps don’t think they’re doing anything wrong.

2. Vague platitudes about being nice to people don’t really work that well. Specificity is the key to creating rules that are easy to enforce and hard to get around, because they lay out what the actual policy of the convention is. It stops being “well I thought it was okay” and starts being “it says here that you can’t do that.” It’s why laws, the things we have to prevent this sort of thing in actual civilization, tend to be so precise.

Let’s look at a convention that does have a more explicit harassment policy.

Emerald City Comic-Con anti-harassment flyer

This year I attended Emerald City ComiCon in Seattle for the first time, and one of the things I took away from the convention itself was how well organized it was. A big part of that came from the very well-publicized anti-harassment flyers that were posted around the convention, something that CBR’s Albert Ching brought up in his talk with Glanzer,

Like SDCC’s harassment policy, ECCC’s flyer comes with some vague terms, although I’d argue that “Be Respectful” is a more direct than “Common Sense.” The flyer does, however, tell people what not to do; expresses no tolerance for noncompliance; tells people what to do if they’ve been harassed; and, most importantly, it was posted everywhere at the convention. It wasn’t buried in a program or on the website, it was a clear and bold statement about Emerald City’s policies that was visible no matter where you were at the show.

It wasn’t just the flyer, though. ECCC had more volunteers and staff — in extremely visible green shirts — circulating among the convention and making sure everything ran smoothly than I have ever seen before at a con. They were actively making sure there were no problems, and if there had been, you were never far away from finding someone who could help you.

Believe it or not, said conditions didn’t create the kind of paranoid environment that Glanzer’s worried about. Instead, they made it seem like the people who run Emerald City actually cared about the people who were there and making sure they had a good time and weren’t harassed. As such, ECCC received nothing but good press about their actions. Indeed, everything that resulted from ECCC’s proactive stance was the direct opposite of what Glanzer fears would happen if Comic-Con adopted a similar strategy.

It must be noted that SDCC is a sprawling mass of humanity. The sheer number of people crammed into a relatively small space makes it very difficult to manage even when everyone is on their best behavior. There are 130,000 people who show up for the convention, which is actually more than the population of the city where I live. Emerald City is a smaller affair than San Diego, but still, that’s a show that had 75,000 people in attendance. If ECCC can make the effort — and actually be rewarded for it in the form of good will — then surely a convention that sells out of its passes in an hour can at least attempt to do the same?

And really, that’s all anyone wants. Just make the effort, Comic-Con. Otherwise, you’re just suggesting that you don’t even care about what happens as along as people are still buying badges and perpetuating SDCC’s fragile illusion that attendees are more interested in waiting in line for hours to see the cast of Avengers than in their own comfort and safety.

Newswire: Springfield, Oregon securing its link to The Simpsons with a mural

by David Anthony

In a 2012 interview with Smithsonian Magazine, Matt Groening kind-of, sort-of admitted that The Simpsons’ Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon. Having grown up in Portland, it was only logical that Groening pulled influences from his home state—even if the Springfield that’s home to the Simpsons family is a constantly shifting, ever-expanding landscape, unlike any Springfield that actually exists. Now the Oregon town will establish a more official claim on its link to the series by having a Simpsons mural painted on the side of its Emerald Art Center this September.

An artist from 20th Century Fox is currently creating a work of Simpsons art that will then be recreated by a local artist, with the original piece then living inside the Emerald Art Center. Though it won’t be an original Groening drawing, the show’s creator has stated his intent to drop by and add his ...

Leon Trotsky, A Piglet On the Move With Help From His Custom Cart

by Lori Dorn

Leon Trotsky, a tiny piglet whose legs were crushed when his mother fell on him, was given a new lease on life when he was rescued by Edgar’s Mission, an animal sanctuary in Victoria, Australia. Because so much damage was done to his legs, Leon was fitted with a cart that kept him upright and moving, keeping up with his friend Frostie the snow goat who has a matching set of wheels.

Just moments after he trotter-stepped his way into our world, this wee little piglet wasted no time in trotting on into the hearts of thousands of people worldwide. He is as brave as he is adorable and he is leading a revolution all of his own! He is Leon Trotsky, otherwise affectionately known as The Pig on Wheels; once destined for the dinner table when, in a sad and ironic twist, the accident that both caused his injury and claimed the lives of his two siblings was to become his saving grace…When his injured mother fell on Leon, he suffered a broken and dislocated right hind femur, along with an injured hock and ligament damage on the other side. With these horrific injuries, things could not have looked much grimmer for the wee chap. But no one told the plucky little Leon that these obstacles of his world should hold him back. His life was precious, and thankfully this was recognised by a kind hearted soul who sought a better outcome for Leon.

Apple just took another step towards obscuring the way the web works

by David Yanofsky

"who needs URLs" -- assholes

At Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference today the company rolled out a new look for its web browser, Safari. Apple executives didn’t point it out, but sharp-eyed observers have noticed one significant change to the interface. The address bar truncates URLs to the domain-name level.

Tap to expand image

This means that a URL such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ansel_Adams will show up as en.wikipedia.org.

Here’s what the address bar looks like now in Safari.

What Safari URLs used to look like
Tap to expand image

This change is consistent with the way the mobile and tablet versions of Safari were designed by Apple for iOS7. On the Apple touch devices, it takes a tap on the address bar to reveal the full URL. It’s unclear how to reveal the full URL in the new version of Safari.

Apple has been criticized in the past for obscuring the web by encouraging app development where websites used to be standard. (It has also been praised.)

In May, Google was the target of criticism for a similar design change in a pre-release version of their browser, Chrome. Security researchers were worried the change made it easier for users to become the victims of phishing attempts in which hackers disguise their intentions behind seemingly trustworthy URLs.

The updated URL display comes along with new interface elements that—according to Apple—are designed to make sharing websites easier. But the old-fashioned approach of copy-and-pasting the URL into a message now appears to be an extra click away.

NRA: Open-carry gun activists' behavior "downright weird" - CBS News

by gguillotte

"It makes folks who might normally be perfectly open-minded about firearms feel uncomfortable and question the motives of pro-gun advocates."

Though the NRA in its statement lauded the Lone Star State for being "second to none for its robust gun culture," the powerhouse organization added that it's "a rare sight to see someone sidled up next to you in line for lunch with a 7.62 rifle slug across his chest, much less a whole gaggle of folks descending on the same public venue with similar arms." To ostentatiously brandish a semi-automatic weapon in a public place is not only "rare," the group continued, "it's downright weird and certainly not a practical way to go normally about your business while being prepared to defend yourself." "To those who are not acquainted with the dubious practice of using public displays of firearms as a means to draw attention to oneself or one's cause, it can be downright scary," the statement said. "It makes folks who might normally be perfectly open-minded about firearms feel uncomfortable and question the motives of pro-gun advocates."

I Wrote a Book!

So, for the past couple of years I’ve gotten a lot of emails from people who have visited this site, and many of them read something like this:

Hey Asshole

When are you going to post more? I’m tired of not getting free shit on the regular.

Well, have I got news for you: I wrote a book, and now you can see what you’ve been missing over the past two-and-a-half years while I worked on it in my free time, between running two bars and writing a weekly column for Playboy. So let me tell you a little bit about what the book is about.

Whenever I train new bartenders, the first thing I tell them is that there are three things, in equal measure, that make a great cocktail:

  1. The recipe you follow.
  2. The ingredients you select.
  3. The technique you employ.

Now, as I see it, there are a million books out there that have been written about recipes, and the history of recipes. Slightly less so, there are books out there about spirits, liqueurs, and other ingredients. But I couldn’t think of any books that really delved into the technique of making a great cocktail. So I set out to do just that.

This is a cocktail book that doesn’t talk about booze. There’s no chapter on rum, there isn’t a chapter of tequila cocktail recipes, and there definitely aren’t a hundred something recipes of my personal creations, with glossy photos of each one. This is a book that shows you exactly how a professional bartender does every last thing pertaining to the making of a quality cocktail, from handling citrus, to exploring simple and compound syrups, to shaking, stirring, infusing, garnishing, and even using a blender in the proper way.

Throughout the text, I’ve included tips, techniques, and recipes from some of the best bartenders in the country. Folks like Jennifer Colliau, Daniel Shoemaker, Jon Santer, Todd Thrasher, Murray Stenson, Joseph Brooke, and Dale DeGroff all contributed valuable information for me to share with my readers.

The Bar Book: Elements of Cocktail Technique is available now, wherever books are sold. I hope you’ll pick up a copy.

Madden NFL 15 cover decision down to two players

by Owen S. Good

Richard Sherman vs. Cam Newton

The final round of the fan-voted contest for the cover of Madden NFL 15 is underway, pitting defensive back Richard Sherman of the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks versus Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

Voting will end on Friday and the winner will be announced in the 6 p.m. ET edition of ESPN's SportsCenter. This year's contest is a trimmed-down version of a promotion that, in years past, featured candidate pools as large as 64 players.

Newton was the runner-up to Calvin Johnson for the cover of Madden NFL 13. Sherman, the best cornerback in the NFL, is in his contest debut. The only defensive player to have the Madden NFL cover all to himself was Baltimore's Ray Lews 10 years ago, in Madden NFL 2005.

Madden NFL 15 launches Aug. 26 for PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One; more detail about the game is expected to come at E3 2014 next week.

Costume Quest 2 is a treat for fans and shows how Double Fine does sequels

by Michael McWhertor
firehose

yes!

"New Orleans-style jazz in the game's version of the French Quarter"

YASSSSS

Double Fine's first real sequel, a follow up to 2010's Costume Quest, is coming this Halloween. The trick or treating role-playing game is essentially more of the same, another sweet adventure that seems aimed at treating fans of the first to what they've been asking for: more Costume Quest.

In Costume Quest 2, players once again take control of twins Reynold and Wren as they set off on a trick or treating adventure. They'll fight evil Grubbins in Halloween costumes that grant them superhuman powers. This time, however, the action moves to a new suburb in Louisiana. How they get there, we're not sure yet, as Double Fine is keeping story details under wraps for now, only explaining that the story takes place immediately after the downloadable add-on, Grubbins on Ice. But Costume Quest 2 is playable and still as charming as ever.

During a recent demo of the game, played on PC — the game is coming to Linux, Mac, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Windows, Xbox 360 and Xbox One — we got to see what Double Fine is doing for Costume Quest 2.

"It's probably our most requested sequel, besides Psychonauts," said Greg Rice, Double Fine publishing manager. "People have been asking for it forever. I think it's that every Halloween you're reminded about the game. We have a lot of people who are coming back to us saying they replay it every year."

"It's probably our most requested sequel, besides Psychonauts"

The vibe of the original Costume Quest, Rice believes, that nostalgic throwback to trick-or-treating as kids, is what resonated with players. For the sequel, Double Fine is looking to give fans of the original more of what they loved, while addressing some of Costume Quest's shortcomings.

One of the common criticisms of the first was its turn-based battles and how quickly they became repetitive. For the sequel, Double Fine is refining the battle system to keep players more engaged by adding attack combos and slightly changing the timing button presses in battles — players must now press the action button as their character strikes with their attack, not beforehand. The same is true for defending against enemy attacks. It's a small change, but an important one.

If players nail the timing on their attacks, they'll get an opportunity for a follow-up attack. And then a third.

In Costume Quest 2, players will have access to a wider variety of Halloween costumes. Some fan favorites from the first game are returning, but Double Fine is expanding the dress up options with at least four new playable costumes: the Clown, the Superhero, the Pterodactyl and the Candy Corn.

The Clown is a healer and can replenish the hit points of his or her teammates with a move called Laughter is the Best Medicine. The Superhero, styled to look like the superman of Double Fine's Middle Manager of Justice, attacks with big punches and can throw a bus for an area of effect attack. We're not sure what the Pterodactyl does, as it wasn't playable in our demo, but the Candy Corn does absolutely nothing.

Costumequest2_screen_02

While the Candy Corn costume made an unplayable appearance in the first game, in the sequel it's one of your options. It's essentially useless, as the player wearing the Candy Corn get up simply sits out his or her turn — every single time. The only action is a message explaining the character's inaction, something along the lines of "Candy Corn has nothing to prove" or "Candy Corn decides to sit this one out." Double Fine hopes to have somewhere around a thousand variations on that line that explains why Candy Corn just stands there idle.

In fact, Double Fine has an achievement built into the game for players who wear the Candy Corn costume the entire game, limiting your party to two members, instead of three. "It's hard-corn mode," Rice said.

There are two other big changes coming to battles in Costume Quest 2.

First, your party's health won't automatically regenerate after each battle. You'll have to find water fountains to replenish your hit points between skirmishes.

Play as Candy Corn for a 'hard-corn' experience

Second, Double Fine is adding cards that players can use to enhance their battle abilities. Rice described them as a combination of the Battle Stamps — modifiers that each character could equip — and the collectible Creepy Treat Cards from the first game. Players will be able to purchase cards from vendors or earn them by completing tasks, and they can be used in battle to give you an advantage, but with limited uses. Some cards, Rice said, may take a few battles to recharge before they can be used again, forcing players to make some tougher decisions about using them.

In addition to tweaking how turn-based battles play out, Double Fine is working to improve the moments in-between, as players explore the world of Costume Quest 2 and undertake side quests. One big improvement is movement. In the original, most players opted to wear the Robot costume, as the outfit's roller shoes let players glide around at high speed. In Costume Quest 2, all the kids wear heelys.

As for side quests, Rice says that in the first game "a lot of those were a bit fetch quest-y, but in this one they're a little more [tied to] game mechanics."

One side quest we completed involved using the Clown's horn. The kids wanted to join a group of street musicians as they played some New Orleans-style jazz in the game's version of the French Quarter. But the band demanded that we rustle up an audience if we wanted to play, so, horn in hand, we chatted up a few tourists milling about. After drawing an audience with an ear for brassiness, the band acquiesced and let us toot along with their street jazz in a simple rhythm game. The reward? Candy, of course, and maybe a little street cred.

Costumequest2_screen_04

Between battles, players will also be able to hunt down hidden pinatas that are stuffed with candy. Rice said that if you beat up those pinatas rhythmically, they'll unleash more candy.

There are a bunch of little touches like that, mostly smart polish on the Costume Quest formula, that make the sequel look like a much stronger game. It's also a much prettier game, taking advantage of improvements to Double Fine's in-house engine that will draw upon the extra horsepower of new-generation consoles and modern PCs. In practice, that means much better lighting — crucial for a game set during Halloween, where luminarias and jack-o'-lanterns provide atmospheric lighting — and surprisingly nice looking water in the game's bayous.

Costume Quest 2 appears to be giving fans of the first everything they wanted: more Costume Quest, more warm-hearted nostalgia, better role-playing game mechanics and more sweet treats. It's also an important step in Double Fine's development history, where the developer feels comfortable and confident in treating fans to a sequel.

Live streaming site Justin.tv removing all archived videos in a week

by Dante D'Orazio
firehose

TO THE CLOUD

Live video broadcasting site Justin.tv is freeing up space. Lots of it. The site announced today that it will be deleting all archived broadcasts that are stored on its servers starting next week. That's seven years worth of video that's going into the recycling bin.

Those videos charter the site's rise from a small startup centered on live streaming co-founder Justin Kan's life 24/7 to a massive web destination that accounts for nearly two percent of all US internet traffic. However, Justin.tv is far different from what it once was. Most all of that traffic doesn't come from Justin.tv — one of its sub-channels dedicated to video games, Twitch, has essentially consumed its parent site. Earlier this year, the parent company renamed itself to Twitch Interactive to reflect the importance of the video game streaming site, and Google's reportedly offering $1 billion for the company.

For Justin.tv broadcasters, however, there are more pressing concerns: namely, their videos. In an article on its official blog, Justin.tv says that more than half of the archived live broadcasts it has have no more than one view. The "vast majority" have fewer than ten total views. After looking at the data, the company decided that "it’s quite clear ... viewers come to Justin.tv because they want to consume content and interact with their communities in real-time." That means that recordings of live broadcasts no longer have a home on the site, and, in a rather unusual move, the company's giving content owners a single week to save their recordings. If you're one of those people, the site's published a help page with instructions on how to download your videos. June 8th is the cutoff.

Asus mixes Windows with Android for crazy 5-in-1 Transformer device

by Vlad Savov
firehose

my weird-ass fetish

Computex is Taiwan's biggest annual exhibition of new technology and Asus is traditionally the company that makes the splashiest announcements at its outset. Keeping that spirit going, Jonney Shih has today revealed a new Transformer Book V, which runs either Windows or Android, in either laptop or tablet mode, and adds a dock for an Android smartphone on its back. It's an expansion of the Transformer Book Duet concept, only this time the Android part of the operation is handled by a 5-inch, Intel Atom-powered smartphone.

The Book V is smaller than the Duet at 12.5 inches and gives a choice between running Windows 8.1 or Android 4.4, switchable nearly instantaneously via a dedicated button. What the new device doesn't seem to do, however, is provide any better reason for why anyone would want such extreme versatility.

Asus' other announcements for Computex are slightly more conventional. The Zenbook NX500 is a new 15.6-inch laptop with 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160) and aluminum unibody construction. It can be specced to include an Nvidia GeForce GTX 850M graphics chip with 2GB of video memory and a high-end Core i7 CPU from Intel. The NX500 should provide an intriguing alternative to Apple's MacBook Pro, whereas Asus' other big new launch, the Transformer Book T300 Chi, will be doing battle against Microsoft's Surface Pro 3. This 12.5-inch Windows tablet is only 7.3mm thick, comes with a 2,560 x 1,440 display, and unlike the Surface Pro, doesn't require a fan to keep cool. A detachable keyboard transforms it into a laptop.

Overhauling pretty much its entire product lineup, Asus has a new Transformer Pad, new Fonepads and MeMO Pads, a new 32-inch 4K monitor, and even a refreshed 802.11ac Wi-Fi router that still looks like a piece of threatening alien technology. Completing the set of multifunctional devices is the Transformer Book Flip, which runs Windows 8.1 on a 13.3-inch 1080p display that can be rotated from 0 to 360 degrees, very much as with Lenovo's Yoga series. There also 14- and 15.6-inch options and affordability seems to be a major emphasis with this device.

As varied as Asus' new products may be, both in their software and physical characteristics, there is one recurring theme throughout them: Intel processors. The Taiwanese company is using Intel's Core and Atom chips in almost everything it has to sell, asserting itself as one of the biggest supporters of the chipmaker's push into mobile devices.

Trent Reznor still working at Beats, though his role at Apple is unclear

by Kwame Opam

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has worked with Beats for some time; as Chief Creative Officer, he was instrumental in the launch of Beats Music earlier this year. However, his role at the company since word of the Apple acquisition surfaced — or whether or not he still works there — has so far been uncertain. A Beats spokesperson told Rolling Stone that Reznor is indeed still works at Beats, but it's unclear if his responsibilities have since changed.

Reznor's relationship with Beats dates back to 2012, when, in a New Yorker profile, he outlined his plans for a streaming service backed by the company that put curation at the fore. At the time, Reznor said that the service, "uses mathematics to offer suggestions to the listener... [but also] would present choices based partly on suggestions made by connoisseurs." Those plans crystallized into Daisy, the precursor to what eventually became Beats Music. However, his future there came into question after the acquisition talks, as his face has been conspicuously absent from the discussions.

Reznor himself has been mum about his position

Though Beats has worked to dispel rumors of Reznor's ouster, the musician himself has been mum on the subject so far. However, it can be said that Apple believes in the Beats philosophy. In a letter sent to Apple employees regarding to purchase, Tim Cook wrote, "Beats Music was built with deep respect for both artists and fans. We think it’s the first subscription service to really get it right." Whatever Reznor's formal position is, Apple hasn't yet hinted at bringing him into the fold.

John Oliver wants the internet's worst trolls to yell at the FCC

by Chris Welch

great

John Oliver is asking the internet's worst trolls to take the "badly spelled vile" they normally pump into YouTube comments and send it the FCC's way — all in the name of net neutrality. During the most recent episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver joined the huge chorus of critics who remain in staunch opposition to the proposed merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable. He hammered on all the usual concerns, chiding the cable companies for their monopolistic behavior and attempts to influence lawmakers through extensive lobbying.

But after lampooning Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon, Oliver shifted his focus to commenters. In a public plea, he asked them to channel their anger for the greater good by taking advantage of the FCC's open comment period. "This is the moment you were made for," Oliver said. "We need you to get out there and for once in your lives focus your indiscriminate rage in a useful direction. Seize your moment, my lovely trolls. Turn on caps lock and fly, my pretties." Will RonPaulFan2016 and OneDirection4Eva answer the call? See Oliver's entire net neutrality segment below.

Heartbleed Bug Exploited Over Extensible Authentication Protocol

wiredmikey (1824622) writes "While most organizations have patched the Heartbleed bug in their OpenSSL installations, a security expert has uncovered new vectors for exploiting the vulnerability, which can impact enterprise wireless networks, Android devices, and other connected devices. Dubbed 'Cupid,' the new attack method was recently presented by Portuguese security researcher Luis Grangeia, who debunked theories that Heartbleed could only be exploited over TCP connections, and after the TLS handshake. Unlike the initial Heartbleed attack, which took place on TLS connections over TCP, the Cupid attack happens on TLS connections over the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP), an authentication framework typically used in wireless networks and peer-to-peer connections. The researcher has confirmed that default installations of wpa_supplicant, hostapd, and freeradius (RADIUS server implementation) can be exploited on Ubuntu if a vulnerable version of OpenSSL is utilized. Mobile devices running Android 4.1.0 and 4.1.1 also use wpa_supplicant to connect to wireless networks, so they're also affected. Everything that uses OpenSSL for EAP TLS is susceptible to Cupid attacks. While he hasn't been able to confirm it, the expert believes iPhones, iPads, OS X, other RADIUS servers besides freeradius, VoIP phones, printers, and various commercial managed wireless solutions could be affected."

You'll be able to buy apps in bundles in iOS 8

by Dan Seifert

amazing innovation

Apple revealed a number of new features for its iOS App Store today, including the ability for developers to sell bundles of apps at a discount. App bundles are not offered by competing platforms. The App Store search feature has been expanded with suggestions for related apps, and app listings can now feature video demos of apps alongside screenshots. Editor's Choice apps will now feature a new logo to better differentiate them from the other apps in the store.

For developers, Apple is offering a new beta testing service based on TestFlight, which it acquired earlier this year. The service will be available to developers for free.

Apple says the upgraded App Store and TestFlight beta feature will be available later this fall.

amazing innovation

Apple is adding one of the most-requested features to iOS 8: inter-app communication. App developers will be able to program "extensions" into their software so that it can be used within other apps — examples demoed onstage at WWDC included VSCO Cam editing functionality accessible from within Apple's stock Photo app, and Pinterest sharing inside Safari.

Apple will bring third-party widgets to iOS 8

by Nathan Ingraham
firehose

amazing innovation

While introducing OS X 10.10 Yosemite, Craig Federighi showed off a new widget system for the Mac notification center, allowing users to pin small apps right in the "Today" view — and now we're learning that the iOS notification center will have a similar feature, as well. In iOS 5 and 6, users could access weather, stocks, and Twitter / Facebook post buttons, but those were removed in favor of the Today view for iOS 7.

However, now users will be able to add widgets to the iOS notification center — and it sounds like 3rd party apps will be supported, as well. It's a major change to iOS, giving it perhaps the most comprehensible glanceable information setup that we've seen on iOS yet, and gives the OS something that can compete with Android's widget system and the Windows Phone live tile system.

Bugs in widely used WordPress plug-in leave sites vulnerable to hijacking

by Dan Goodin

Security researchers have discovered vulnerabilities in a widely used WordPress extension that leaves sites susceptible to remote hijacking.

WordPress-powered sites that use the All in One SEO Pack should promptly install an update that fixes the privilege escalation vulnerabilities, Marc-Alexandre Montpas, a researcher with security firm Sucuri wrote in a blog post published Saturday. Administrators can upgrade by logging in to the admin panel, selecting plug-ins, and choosing the All in One title. The just-released version that fixes the vulnerabilities is 2.1.6.

The worst of the attacks made possible by the bugs can allow attackers to inject malicious code into the admin control panel, Montpas warned. Malicious hackers could then change an admin's password or insert backdoor code into the underlying websites. People could also remotely tamper with a site's search engine optimization settings. To exploit the bugs, attackers need only an unprivileged account on the site, such as one for posting reader comments. In some cases, the privilege escalation and cross-site scripting bugs in All in One SEO are combined with another vulnerability that Montpas didn't elaborate on.

Apple has a new programming language called Swift, 'and it totally rules'

by Nathan Ingraham
firehose

it only took Apple 2.5 years to build up the bravery to start calling Jobs' stuff "baggage"

Apple introduced a boatload of new consumer features for OS X and iOS today, but one of the biggest announcements for developers could be its new programming language, Swift. Craig Federighi just announced it, saying that Apple is trying to build a language that doesn't have the "baggage" of Objective-C, a programming language that came from NeXt that has formed the basis of OS X and eventually iOS. Coders will be able to see the results of their programming in real time as they write the code, and it should definitely be faster than Objective-C as well.

To enable developers to easily keep working on their apps, Swift code can live right besides C and Objective-C code in the same app. We're a ways off before seeing the results of this new code, but it's something that developers have been waiting a long time for — it got a bigger cheer than any other announcement made so far today.

Star Wars: Episode VII has added two new cast members, 12 Years a Slave breakout star Lupita Nyong'o and Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie. Nyong'o won an Academy Award for best supporting actress earlier this year and reports of her potential casting have been floating around since not long after. Christie continues to star in Game of Thrones as Brienne of Tarth. "I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "It's thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape." Episode VII is currently shooting in Abu Dhabi with director J.J. Top six Joss Whedon moments.

Oh, wow, you hate me.  But not as much as I hate Joss, so let’s do this my way:

Top Six Joss Whedon moments, with links:

1).  That one time that Joss said Spike was his  favorite character and how his narrative arc was the greatest, showing where his actual ‘feminist’ interests are.  Because he truly thinks that he gave more development and focus to a secondary male character in two seasons on a show titled after his female heroine than he did to the heroine in all seven seasons.  And he doesn’t see a problem with that.

2).  That one time when Joss Whedon tried to sell Firefly to networks and co-writers by talking about his female heroine of color getting gang raped by Reavers and how the experience was going to change the life of his white, male hero, who will then learn to respect women who are whores.  Because he can’t respect a woman who chooses to have sex out of her own free will for profit, but he’ll kiss the hand of one whose CHOICE and CONSENT were taken away.  It’s the taking away of Inara’s agency that makes her worthy of Mal’s respect.

3).  That time when Joss said that Summer Glau kind of looked Asian, so we didn’t have to read her as white.  Because white people can pass for every race, we don’t even NEED anyone of other races wasting their time in Hollywood. From what I know, he’s stated this fail opinion multiple times, in defense of his casting choices.

4).  That time when Joss Whedon punished a woman for getting pregnant by ruining her character and then firing the actress, and then lying to her to bring her back in order to kill her character.

5). Those multiple times when Joss let white actors audition for roles he had written to be played by people of color.  And how they, of course, ended up being race lifted and being casted as white.  Except!  Sometimes, you’re supposed to pretend they’re Asian, so that’s progress, according to Joss.

6).  That time when Joss Whedon made a Dollhouse episode (Spy in the House of Love) where Sierra infiltrates an institution by replacing an Asian woman in her work place, and NO ONE notices that it’s another woman.  Because all Asians look the same?

OS X Yosemite unveiled at WWDC, features big UI overhaul

by Lee Hutchinson
firehose

"You wouldn't believe how much time we spent crafting that trash can."

'Federighi called Dr. Dre on stage from his demo Mac, delayed via his iPhone; Dre thanked the developer audience, and asked what time he should show up to Apple's campus to beat the notoriously early-rising Tim Cook in to work ("About four am," responded Federighi).'

This morning at Apple’s 2014 Worldwide Developer’s Conference, Apple SVP Craig Federighi gave us our first official look at the upcoming version of the Macintosh desktop operating system. This is the tenth formal release of OS X (which is pronounced "oh ess ten," never "oh ess ecks"); Apple’s naming convention uses "OS X" as the brand, separate from the version, and so the brand and version of this release is indeed "OS X 10.10"—"oh ess ten ten dot ten" (or "ten point ten," if you insist).

Starting with OS X 10.9, though, Apple has given the OS California-themed names—10.9 was "OS X Mavericks," after a famous surfing location, and this new version is "OS X Yosemite," named after California's Yosemite National Park. Mavericks' branding and banners were all wave-related, after the surf theme; Yosemite's desktop features the famous slab-sided southwest face of Half Dome, one of the park's most recognizable rock formations. (PC gamers who cut their teeth in the late '80s and '90s will also recognize Half Dome from its role as the logo of the legendary adventure gaming company Sierra On-Line.)

"Translucency" is the name of the day, with translucent panels and sidebars popping up in all windows. The icons in the Dock have also gotten a big overhaul, gaining a very iOS-like appearance across the board. "You wouldn't believe how much time we spent crafting that trash can," joked Federighi. The revised interface can also be shifted to a "dark" mode, where windows and menus shift to light text on a smoky background instead of the Mac's more typical black-on-white.
