Nine Inch Nails has a cool new game-centric music video

by Jordan Devore

Nine Inch Nails has an EP on the way, and if you know your Llamasoft (TxK, Space Giraffe, countless others), the music video for the new single "Less Than" should look awfully familiar.

It's none other than Polybius, the urban-legend-inspired arcade shooter for PS4 and PlayStation VR.

"[Trent Reznor] mentioned that he'd enjoyed Llamasoft's stuff and he had an idea to discuss," designer Jeff Minter told Ars Technica. "Of course I was super chuffed to hear he'd liked our work, as I've enjoyed his a lot over the years too!" The two corresponded over Twitter and the project went from there.

'Contra' is still cool enough to get a vinyl soundtrack

by Timothy J. Seppala
Mondo's skill at curating some of the coolest pop-culture art is unparalleled. Whether it's posters, enamel pins, T-shirts or classic soundtracks on vinyl, even if you don't like one piece, it's hard to deny that it's at least interesting. Well, with...

Détour

by Miss Cellania

A family goes on vacation, with their bikes strapped to the back of the van. But the youngest daughter's beloved tricycle falls off and is lost. The girl is upset, but the tricycle has its own weird adventures trying to find its way back to the family.

(YouTube link)

A few scenes will make you fall in love with a simple tricycle. This delightful story by Michel Gondry was entirely shot on an iPhone, in French with English subtitles. Pay attention, because you don't want to miss the singing fish. Or the ending. -via Laughing Squid

Hodor goes to work at KFC in the inevitable 'Game of Thrones' parody advert

by Sam Haysom
TwitterFacebook

It was only a matter of time before this happened, wasn't it?

It could have been KFC, or another fast food restaurant, or pretty much brand: at some point, Kristian Nairn was bound to be snapped up for a Hodor-style Game of Thrones parody.

In the clip above, Nairn plays a hassled KFC worker swamped by hordes of lunch-time customers trying to order "chicken with fries" at the same time.

The whole thing is pretty silly and predictable, but that doesn't seem to matter much — the clip has already wracked up 3.4 million views and around 30,000 shares on Facebook. Read more...

From the archives: Execution by cannon, Iran, 1870s

by biotv

Blowing from a gun was a method of execution practiced in many parts of the world since the invention of the cannon until the 20th Century, but mostly in India. George Carter Stent, a British official with the Chinese Maritime Customs in the 1870s describes the procedure:
The prisoner is generally tied to a gun with the upper part of the small of his back resting against the muzzle. When the gun is fired, his head is seen to go straight up into the air some forty or fifty feet; the arms fly off right and left, high up in the air, and fall at, perhaps, a hundred yards distance; the legs drop to the ground beneath the muzzle of the gun; and the body is literally blown away altogether, not a vestige being seen.

Mario 'Monopoly' adds power-ups to the tired classic

If there's one thing that Super Mario Bros. and Monopoly share, it's their innate ability to engender family arguments in otherwise placid households. Which is why it's such a delight to see the pair reunited in the new Gamer Edition of Monopoly, tha...

Hey 30-somethings, you're a Xennial

by Laura Vitto
TwitterFacebook

Between Generation X and Millennials exists a tiny micro-generation of people who call themselves the Xennials. Maybe you've seen this group labeled Generation Catalano — a reference to '90s teen drama My So-Called Life — or perhaps as the Oregon Trail Generation, but neither have quite the ring that Xennial does.

Though the term's been written about before, a viral Facebook post from early June brought the term back into the news cycle.

As associate professor of sociology Dan Woodman from the University of Melbourne tells Australian lifestyle site Mamamia, those born between 1977 and 1983 had the unique experience of pre-internet childhoods that led into tech-centered early adulthood.  Read more...

Nintendo is talking about making anime and we're here for it

by Kellen Beck
TwitterFacebook

Nintendo may be making more anime in the future, which sounds like a great plan to us.

During a shareholder Q&A Thursday, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto expressed interest in making anime for some of Nintendo's most popular series, specifically naming Pikmin, Star Fox, and Yoshi, according to translations from Alex Aniel.

Someone asked a question about releasing the early-2000s anime series Kirby: Right Back At Ya! on Blu-ray, which prompted Miyamoto's response.

Q7: Regarding product video, are there any plans to bring back past content like Kirby anime on BD, or old games on DD for console/mobile?

Disney removing 'Wench Auction' from Pirates of the Caribbean ride

by Lance Ulanoff
TwitterFacebook

Disney's 50-year old Pirates of the Caribbean ride — the one that inspired a seemingly unstoppable film franchise — is getting a makeover that'll drag at least a tiny portion of the attraction from the past into our more culturally-aware present.

The company announced in its Disney Parks Blog on Thursday that it's overhauling the Pirates of the Caribbean rides in Paris, Florida, and California. The new version of the ride, which features a cruise through an animatronic-pirate-infested Spanish town, will include a heavy dose of Pirates the Caribbean the movie (including Captain Barbossa) and, most notably, get rid of a "Wench Auction" scene where pirates bid for local women. Poison Ivy as a kindergarten teacher

no, but really: flytraps use up a LOT of energy closing their traps. You know a lot of other plants that move that much? Tricking them into closing when there isn’t food there is indeed mean.

B-but… they’re plants… they’re devoid of sentience, right? They don’t “feel,” they’re more like little wind-up machines. Right? They don’t act on instinct, they’re… well… traps. You can’t actually be mean to a plant. Right??

I’m of the opinion that meanness is about the nature of the action, not awareness on the part of the target of the action.

Tricking them into closing their traps is actually harmful to them, since the energy expended in closing and then re-opening the trap isn’t replenished by having a tasty insect to digest.

I’m of the opinion that meanness is about the nature of the action, not awareness on the part of the target of the action.

Reblogging for that sentiment…and also because fly traps are one of the funnest things ever.

Great Job, Internet!: Here is the mighty dog who rules as a god-like deity to dozens of hens

by Clayton Purdom

One of the most popular sub-genres of internet animal videos is the “unlikely friends” video. You know the type: a cat and a dog napping together, or, like, a turtle giving some food to a fish, or whatever. And yet there is another sub-sub-genre of internet animal video still: that is, the unexplainable inter-species phenomenon. Earlier this year, we marveled over the footage of 18 turkeys performing a bizarre funeral rite around a dead cat. Add to that library this video of many, many hens, all pecking at and milling around a Great Pyrenese who reigns over them all like a benevolent god.

They peck at the bell on her neck, calling for charity and good tidings. It forms a Kurtz-like tableau, leading us to wonder if the dog knows that she is not the god of these people or if she has come unglued from reality, believing that there ...

Magic Wormhole is a clever way to send files easily and securely

If you need to transfer a couple hundred megs to a coworker or friend across the country, you aren’t short on options. In fact, options are thick on the ground, and all have their own issues. Don’t you wish you could just speak a few magic words and send stuff directly to them, no intermediate upload, no web interface, no login? Magic Wormhole is a clever way to do just that. Read More

The US Government Wants To Permanently Legalize the Right To Repair

by BeauHD
An anonymous reader quotes a report from Motherboard: In one of the biggest wins for the right to repair movement yet, the U.S. Copyright Office suggested Thursday that the U.S. government should take actions to make it legal to repair anything you own, forever -- even if it requires hacking into the product's software. Manufacturers -- including John Deere, Ford, various printer companies, and a host of consumer electronics companies -- have argued that it should be illegal to bypass the software locks that they put into their products, claiming that such circumvention violated copyright law. Thursday, the U.S. Copyright Office said it's tired of having to deal with the same issues every three years; it should be legal to repair the things you buy -- everything you buy -- forever. "The growing demand for relief under section 1201 has coincided with a general understanding that bona fide repair and maintenance activities are typically non infringing," the report stated. "Repair activities are often protected from infringement claims by multiple copyright law provisions." "The Office recommends against limiting an exemption to specific technologies or devices, such as motor vehicles, as any statutory language would likely be soon outpaced by technology," it continued.

IBM is working with the Air Force Research Lab on a TrueNorth 64-chip array

by John Mannes
IBM is working with the U.S. Air Force to improve its TrueNorth line of chips designed to optimize the performance of machine learning models at the hardware level. The new 64-chip array will consist of four boards, each with 16 chips. IBM’s chips are still too experimental to be used in mass production,  but they’ve shown promise in running a special type of neural network… Read More

Watch this guy play Super Mario Bros. IRL in Central Park using HoloLens

Want to stop being connected 24/7? Try this 'dumbphone'

by Molly Sequin
TwitterFacebook

Walk down the sidewalk of any major city and it's likely you'll see the same exact scene: Masses of people staring down at their phones instead of interacting with other living, breathing humans. At some point, after the smartphone became an essential part of our lives, push notifications and news feeds have commanded more and more of our attention.

You could just not use a phone, of course, but then you're completely disconnected. Is there a middle ground between giving in to total digital immersion and being off the grid?

A Swiss technology company called Punkt thinks so. It recently released its retro-inspired "dumbphone," the MP01. The cool-looking feature phone takes us away from apps as it allows nothing more than texting and calling. Read more...
