Completed in 1660, Charles Le Brun’s painting of Everhard Jabach and His Family had seen better days. The 355-year-old family portrait was covered in a badly tinted varnish, had multiple superficial scratches and structural damage had split the painting nearly in half. This video documents the 10-month restoration at the Metropolitan Museum of Art lead by Michael Gallagher that involved retouching, structural work, re-varnishing, and numerous other conservation techniques to bring this giant painting back to life. The Met also documented the process in some 20+ blog posts over on their website. (via Sploid)

trans-substantiationreminder series: bleak yet comforting thoughts.
i specifically chose animals that are (or believed to be) extinct due to human influence: thylacine, great auk, baiji, west african black rhino, golden toad, dodo, passenger pigeon, and quagga. there are many other species i could have included. the plants are also based on extinct species, but i found much less information about extinct plants, unfortunately.
the text doesn’t necessarily relate to each animal or their extinction. it’s all basically the same idea: let’s all be nice to each other, because today, the universe is vast and incomprehensible, we are all suffering, we are all going to die, and we’re all in this together. for today.
i’m busy for a couple weeks with conventions, but after that i’m considering a companion series with ancient extinct animals, so feel free to send me your favorites :)
Hello, ladies. It is I, Shabani. It is said that Shabani is handsome. Very handsome. Women come to see Shabani at the zoo where Shabani lives. The piercing, thoughtful gaze of Shabani flutters their hearts. Or rustles their jimmies. One of those. Shabani is not sure.

But the women know Shabani is not just handsome. Shabani is kind. Shabani cares for his children. Shabani loves children. They are delicious.

Alas, the women, they cannot know Shabani’s heart. Shabani is a riddle, wrapped in an enigma, stuffed into a banana only Shabani can peel. Shabani is distant. Lonely. Shabani can only refer to himself in the third person. That is how lonely he is.

Photos from 9 Gag by way of Andrew Y.
Yesterday we featured some ResQte Photos from Aussie Patrick Jones– photos he takes for the RSPCA in NSW. In his email, he said he had some other posts recently, and to choose any that “struck our fancy.” All I can say is–THESE sure did! (But- no Quokkas or Wombats, sorry.) Comments on each photo (taken from his site) are in the hovers. That’s Billy The Kid up top.
[Wait a minute. I AM a Chocolate Lab! OK, never mind- just a bowl of water.]

The Taronga Zoo announced a new addition to their family- this Prosh Koala Joey!
This six month old Joey doesn’t have a name yet.

She is still in Mom Wanda’s pouch and will stay there for at least the next four months.

Australian photographer Patrick Jones has been kind enough to send C.O. some terrific shots (here and here.) He works for RSPCA NSW (an Australian not-for-profit animal welfare organization) as a graphic designer.

These guys are part of a litter of eight! Here is a story about their mom, Rainy.

Patrick’s site says Rainy was having some health issues but is much better now, and all her little guys have found homes!

Really wanted to hold that feature photo for Halloween but couldn’t hold out. So folks, check out Ozzy, willya?

Get this: some CREEP owner took Ozzy to the groomer, and then LEFT her there. Bad for Ozzy, but good for E.J and Jennah Coughlin from Hollywood, who scooped her up STAT from Central Coast Pug Rescue in Pismo Beach.
