I especially love these two excerpts from her wiki page
I tell kids about Tilly ALL THE TIME when I’m doing tsunami presentations for my job. She lived in a landlocked part of England! She probably thought she would never ever ever use what she learned in her geography class about tsunamis and then just a few weeks later she used it to save over one hundred lives! It’s an incredible story about how anything can happen anytime, and we need to be prepared to act.
What I think is most important about her story is that, even as a kid, Tilly knew she was right and she stuck to that knowledge. She practically threw a fit until her parents listened to her, because at first they kept brushing her off. And that is SO IMPORTANT for our kids to know! Adults can be wrong. You need to trust your instincts. YOU can be right and YOU can act in times of danger and emergency. YOU have the power to save yourself and others.
I’ve decided that all bats fall somewhere on this horrid little graph I’ve devised. Here are some prime examples of the various Creature Varieties found in nature.
Every single response I see @neil-gaiman give on this hellsite has the exact same energy as an extremely tired king of a tiny medieval country, pinching the bridge of his nose as he once more decides which peasant the pumpkin TRULY belongs to
i know this means absolutely nothing to most people but basically all of the little web game things I’ve made recently (angels in automata, hex plant growing game, d.a.n.m.a.k.u., life music, sudoku land, the metroidvania style map editor, etc etc etc) are all entirely self-contained individual client-side html files that can be downloaded and run offline and have literally no libraries or frameworks or dependencies, because i’m an insane woman who enjoys hand coding my input handling and display code from scratch in vanilla js and having it all live in one single html file with the game logic and the page structure and the page style all just living and loving together side by side in a universal format that can be run by any web browser on any devixe. i’ll even include image files as base64 data-uri strings just to keep every single asset inside the one file.
the sudoku one is gorgeous and a really intuitive way to play sudoku
i also really love the hexplant one

Thoughts that are mutual between cats and their people:
Yeah you’re cute when you sleep but you didn’t let me sleep either so I’m going to annoy you now because I’m bored. Hahah get poked, sleepy idiot.
How do you not comprehend this when I am literally staring at you. Like I understand that your brain can’t understand things this nuanced but come on, how do you not get this.
I don’t know if you know that what I am currently doing is an expression of affection, but that won’t stop me. Knowing that I showed you that I love you is enough.
I heard a crinkly material and the sound of you chewing so I have to know what’s in your mouth RIGHT FUCKING NOW.
I can’t communicate with you and you can’t communicate with me, so I’m just copying the tone of the sound you’re making in hopes that you understand that I try.
You are doing activities beyond my comprehension, and I find this fascinating. I will never understand what the fuck you are trying to achieve here, but I am intrigued nonetheless.
Hey are you ok, you haven’t done your weird thing in a while. Yeah I don’t get why you do that but I know you do that when you’re ok.
look at me. listen to me. this is directed at americans for the record. the reason you think North American animals are boring is because you live here. there are so many cool and beautiful animals here. we have beavers. we have wolves. we have moose. we have sea lions. we have armadillos. we have mountain lions. we have alligators. we have foxes. we have bighorn sheep. we have manatees. we have bears. we have ocelots. we have BISON. and that’s not even touching on the birds! or the turtles! or the snakes! we have amazing beautiful and diverse wildlife right here and it deserves to be appreciated and protected
Possums are the only North American marsupial, they eat ticks and keep down cases of Lyme, and they can’t carry rabies! We only have two native boa constrictors; the rubber boa and the rosy boa! Bison and the American Alligator are LITERAL MEGAFAUNA LEFT OVER FROM PREHISTORY!
When I was a teenager, I was hiking with my family on Cape Cod. I was not a willing participant to these hikes; I would’ve preferred to be back at our rental cabin with a book.
But my parents were birders, so hiking we did go.
And about a mile up the trail, a woman came rushing up to us, clutching her binoculars to her chest. “Come quickly,” she said, with a British accent. “You have to see this!”
This is what birders are like. They are as excited about a life bird as any fan would be spotting their favorite celebrity. You have to see, you have to.
So my parents rushed off with her, and I plodded along behind them.
To find a cluster of Brits huddled in a bird blind, staring at..
A blue jay.
A goddamn blue jay.
And I was a teenager, but I knew better then to mouth off in front of my mom. So I nodded, and smiled, and bit my tongue, until an elderly man looked at me with tears in his eyes, and said, “Isn’t it BEAUTIFUL?”
And I stopped. And looked at it. The way they were. As if it were new. And damned if they weren’t right.
I think of that, to this day. That sometimes, you need to step back, and see the world as if it were new. Strange, and haunting, and beautiful, so beautiful.
We should be more pro-active or we’ll see more of such sad fates of honest people.
And the utterly ironic thing is I’ve seen repeated tumblr posts of that iconic photo absolutely slagging the shit out of Peter Norman as “lol white guy so uncomfortable” “Why the fuck isn’t he supporting them”, etc etc.
Katsuobushi, the traditional source of Bonito flakes
The fish is beheaded, gutted, and filleted, with the fatty belly, which does not lend well to being preserved, trimmed off. The fillets are then arranged in a basket and simmered just below boiling for an hour to an hour and a half, depending on their size.
The rib bones are then removed and the fillets smoked for up to a month using oak, pasania, or castanopsis wood. They are smoked for five to six hours in one session, left to rest one day for the condensation to rise to the surface, then fired and smoked again the next day. This smoking and resting cycle is repeated 12–15 times in total. At this point, the fish is dry and hard, and the built-up tar from the smoke and excess fat is cleaned from the surface using a grinder. At this stage the fillets are called arabushi (荒節) and most commonly found in stores shaved and packaged for sale under the name katsuo-kezuri-bushi (鰹削り節) or hanakatsuo. They are not true katsuobushi without the last fermentation stage, but still valued as a good substitute.
The last stage of creating katsuobushi is to allow the fish to sun-dry using the assistance of mold. The fillets are sprayed with Aspergillus glaucus culture and left for two weeks in a closed cultivation room. The mold ferments the fillets and also draws out any residual moisture.
The mold is continually scraped off, with further sun-drying increasing hardness and dryness until the fillet resembles a piece of wood, with less than 20% of its original weight. By definition, only fillets that have been treated in this manner may be referred to as katsuobushi. After repeating this process of mold growth and sun-drying at least twice, the katsuobushi can also be called karebushi (枯節, “dried fillet”), and fillets repeating this process more than three times can be called honkarebushi (本枯節, “true dried fillet”). When tapped together lightly, they sound almost metallic, and unlike their dull beige outer appearance, when broken open they are a translucent deep ruby color inside. Rarely, very high-end honkarebushi repeat this drying process for over two years.
Traditionally, chunks of katsuobushi were shaved as needed with an instrument similar to a wood plane called a katsuobushi kezuriki.
If y'all liked the unidentifiable yellow glitter goo you’ll love the time I made wine out of marshmallow Peeps
…how???
Well you see. The ingredience for wine are:
-yeast
-sugar
-time
And it turns out the yeast aren’t really that picky about what kind of sugar you give them, as long as there’s enough of it
Peepswine moodboard
It ended up tasting kinda like a very mild, sweet white wine, with a faint but unmistakable aftertaste of marshmallow
The 100% true and honest answer is someone said the phrase “fermented peeps” around me at exactly the right time and I went “ohhh that’s a sin I simply must commit”
This has hit a big subreddit, I’m told, so hi! If you came here looking for the peepswine post, here it is
