kakaimeitahi: While I was born here in Bluff, I was raised...

kakaimeitahi:

While I was born here in Bluff, I was raised amongst my mother’s people in Whakarewarewa. I grew up in a village within a hapū, Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao. One of my fondest memories as a child was sitting in the baths with all the kuia who had moko. I was just fascinated, fascinated with lines. I used to stare at them. I just loved moko. Back then a lot of the kuia had moko, and growing up in the pā you used to run around and into everybody’s house, and they fed you, cuddled you, looked after you.

The moko was very common, but only among the kuia.

By Mum’s generation, nobody was being done. That would have been post-war, I suppose. When we had only one kuia left in the pā, I asked my Mum, “Why don’t you get one?”

She said, “Too sore.”

She’d seen it done in the old way as a child; it was a whole lot of blood, and they never flinched or made a sound. My mother was absolutely not having any of that. And by that point I think people thought it was gone, a part of the old world.

But I loved looking at the moko and at the kuia.

I came back to Bluff as a young woman and helped develop the marae; we were quite young to be doing that. There was nothing visibly Māori here, or little to none, back in 1973. There was what they called the Māori house and the Waitaha Hall for functions. After the wharekai was opened, I’d chat with my peers and we’d say we should all get a moko when we turned 40. But no-one was game enough, and it wasn’t the thing to do. It had almost become invisible.

As they started to revive the moko in the past 15, perhaps 20 years, I would see the women and see photographs and think how beautiful it was. A few years ago Mark Kopua, who had come down to do a tā moko wānanga, asked me about my kauae. “Funny you’d say that,” I told him, “because I’ve always wanted one, but now that I have the opportunity I’m a bit scared.”

Three years later I said yes. I’d given myself enough time to get the courage.

I’m thrilled with the revitalisation of the arts. I love seeing the other women and it’s almost like we have a link; an unspoken thing. I don’t know if it’s our moko talking to each other or if it’s the wairua that goes with it.

I think I was fortunate that my parents who raised me understood the beauty behind it; the beauty of the moko. If I think back, there were photos on the wall of two of my kuia with moko kauae – my grandmother’s sisters – from the time I was a baby. And I had a picture of my great-grandmother, and she had one as well.

Mihipeka Wairama of Tūhourangi, painted in 1912 by Charles Goldie, is Hana’s great-grandmother.

imo he was being super salty about that tendency guys have to blame their anatomy for their bad choices

it’s like “oh i don’t want to be a creepo but my dick has a mind of its own” “well here’s a scissors fix your life”

or maybe, you know, have some damn respect, and don’t pretend you don’t have a choice of whether to be nasty

i think people have a tendency to take jesus literally when he was actually throwing shade, or to take things in this really smarmy martyrish way when they’re actually pretty snippy

i mean “turn the other cheek” sounds like being a doormat until you picture how it would play out: someone smacks you, and you turn and go “do it again, go on, take a swing buddy, does that make you feel better, do you feel like a winner now?” cuz you know what 90% of the time they will get curled up shame toes and shuffle off

tl;dr: no jesus did not actually want you to take a spoon to your eyeballs for babe watching, he wanted you to take responsibility for how you treat people

All of the actions Jesus told his followers to perform are actually passive-aggressive actions meant to oppose and resist Jerusalem’s Roman colonizers. Like, turning the other cheek is actually a matter of forcing the Roman to either break proper slapping etiquette or to hit you properly- thereby treating you as an equal instead of someone he’s subjugating. If a debtor is taking all your possessions in court, you include the shirt off your back so his greed is causing you to commit public nudity. And when a soldier forces you to carry his equipment (as per the law of the time), you go the extra mile with him- literally carrying his bag beyond the distance that the law stipulates and therefore making the action illegal.

Context matters.

Jesus was a radical, rebellious, snarky twentysomething. Always remember that.

It really is sad and heartbreaking how immigrants are afraid to evacuate bc they’re afraid ICE cares more about deporting them than their safety

matter of fact they’re not just afraid, they’re literally not leaving their flooded homes caused by hurricane harvey…. the gross ass border patrol is still doing their usual checkpoint procedures despite the natural crisis.

oh and it gets worse. ICE left 50 immigrant women and children stranded on a bus before hurricane harvey hit. they left those women and children to die because they cared more about protecting themselves before the storm hits. thankfully the immigrants found shelter, but due to these circumstances, we all know where the government lies when it comes to the protection of immigrants….pay close attention to how this all plays out bc it’s really sickening and heartbreaking.

This is so sad I really hope everyone’s OK and doing everything they can to stay safe because obviously the government isn’t helping at all

butterflyinthewell:

a-modern-major-general:

butterflyinthewell:

I just explained my issues with executive dysfunction to my dad and holy shit he gets it!

I described it like this:

Imagine you’re back at AllPro(where he worked) with fifty phones and they’re all ringing. You want to answer them all because they’re all equal priority. That’s an environmental cue– phones are generally a ‘respond immediately’ cue.

Picking up a phone is a simple thing. You know it’s as easy as deciding which phone to answer and reaching out to pick it up, but your brain is saying “I must answer all of them!” The phones are ringing, and you can’t make your body reach out to pick one up because you don’t have fifty arms to reach out, you don’t have fifty ears to listen with, you don’t have a brain that can process and respond to fifty conversations and you don’t have fifty mouths that can all say different things all at the same time.

Either you do it all simultaneously or nothing will happen. You can want to do it so bad it makes you cry, and you can’t make a decision because no choice seems like the right one. So the task stays unfinished and you get frustrated every time somebody reminds you to “just do it, it’s not that hard!” Because yes, it really IS that hard.

Now, if you had somebody who could point to which phone to answer, you can do it fine. That’s a prompt. Prompting removes the ‘middle man’ thought that says ‘do it all at once’ and gets you to focus on tasks one at a time instead of seeing them as some towering insurmountable mess.

Dad looked at me for a couple of seconds and said something to the effect of, “I didn’t know doing things were that hard for you.”

This is a major, major, major breakthrough between us because dad had it in his head that I left things messy because I didn’t care. While that’s crappy of him to assume, teaching him how that’s not the case and having him really understand it is a huge deal.

This is a brilliant analogy, do you mind if I use it?  And yay for your dad listening & understanding :)

Go for it with my full blessing. If it helps more people, I’m all for it! :)

Y'all got sources?

yeah so more information about this woman who leaked important information pertaining russia’s involvement in the election:

Her name is “Reality Leigh Winner” and she was a NSA Contractor. She passed a top secret NSA document to a news source (an article from The Intercept) that contains information about a Russian cyber-attack with one voting machine DAYS before the 2016 presidential election. This is considered the most detailed piece of proof regarding Russia’s interference with the elections to date.

Here’s how the NSA document described how the Russians did the hacking:

“As described by the classified NSA report, the Russian plan was simple: pose as an e-voting vendor and trick local government employees into opening Microsoft Word documents invisibly tainted with potent malware that could give hackers full control over the infected computers.

But in order to dupe the local officials, the hackers needed access to an election software vendor’s internal systems to put together a convincing disguise. So on August 24, 2016, the Russian hackers sent spoofed emails purporting to be from Google to employees of an unnamed U.S. election software company, according to the NSA report. Although the document does not directly identify the company in question, it contains references to a product made by VR Systems, a Florida-based vendor of electronic voting services and equipment whose products are used in eight states.

The spear-phishing email contained a link directing the employees to a malicious, faux-Google website that would request their login credentials and then hand them over to the hackers. The NSA identified seven “potential victims” at the company. While malicious emails targeting three of the potential victims were rejected by an email server, at least one of the employee accounts was likely compromised, the agency concluded. The NSA notes in its report that it is “unknown whether the aforementioned spear-phishing deployment successfully compromised all the intended victims, and what potential data from the victim could have been exfiltrated.”

So instead of having Trump and his entire party removed, they gon throw home girl in jail and try to act like none of this happened.

Torture school subjects children to lethal punishments #10yrsago

onewordtest:

captain-peculiar:

onewordtest:

jumpingjacktrash:

mostlysignssomeportents:

Mother Jones has a long, chilling feature on The Judge Rotenberg Education Center, a private radical behavior-modification school based in Canton, Mass. The school is run by a rogue behaviorist who uses discredited “punishment” techniques – electroshock – on children as young as nine to change their personalities. Matthew Israel, the school’s $400,000/year executive director, straps homemade, overpowered shock apparatus to children (including severely autistic and retarded kids) and has his staff administer strong shocks for even minor infractions. Some children have been shocked thousands of times a day, and several children have died at the school.

Eight states send troubled children to the school, where “high functioning” kids are “educated” by being sat in front of computers all day, running through automated tutorial programs. Talking, fidgeting, or acting out during this “school” time is punished with shocks. Some kids’ shock apparatus misfires, shocking them without any provocation. The staff are instructed to activate the shock apparatus out of sight of the children, so that they can’t mentally or physically prepare for it.

The Rotenberg process lacks any kind of scientific basis, and the school uses a 20-year-old film of its “successes” to convince parents to send their children to the program – however, some of the success stories in the film are still institutionalized at Rotenberg 20 years after their “cure,” wheelchair bound and in terrible shape.

https://boingboing.net/2007/08/30/torture-school-subje.html

as far as i can tell they’re still at it. and this is far from the only place to use ‘aversives’ on disabled kids. things you can’t do to enemy soldiers under the geneva convention, you can get insurance to pay you to do to an autistic eight year old.

like i don’t want to get into a pissing contest with other marginalized people, because that doesn’t get us anywhere good, but it’s just a constant low-key disappointment that torturing and psychologically breaking disabled people is not just legal but medically recommended and court-ordered, and still progressives mostly just mention us as an afterthought, like “oh yeah you can march at the back and we’ll try to rustle up someone who knows sign, now shoosh, we’re talking about real people’s problems.”

i know y’all don’t mean it like that. but when members of groups that have huge and well-funded defense/support organizations, at least some representation in every kind of media, history weeks and school programs devoted to them, say things like “you don’t know what discrimination is unless you’re this” and “we’re the only ones getting killed and you don’t care” while story after story of disabled people being literally no kidding actually fucking tortured to death, like i can’t emphasize enough how real this is, or how constant it is, it just keeps goddamn happening, never even make the front page below the fold…

well, i’m just gonna say that folks could stand to work on their intersectionality.

folks could stand to work on their goddamn intetsectionality. I’m tired of being polite.

what the ABSOLUTE FUCK

3AM Walks In Rural Areas While Dissociating:

Cary

Things I miss.
Never ran from the bears, though -- we would both turn around an go the opposite direction.

gallusrostromegalus:

Pros:

  • Actual Silence
  • Nobody else out so you don’t have to pretend to be human, which is nice
  • You can look up and see the actual band of the Milky Way, and Know that whatever else happens, the galaxy will continue to dance and sparkle
  • Wear whatever u want
  • The combination of being alone in the dark with the summer wind on your skin re-sets whatever problem was happening and suddenly your fingers are yours again.

Cons:

  • You will see the large dark shape coming up the other end of the street and be fascinated by the way it moves almost like a crawling man, but it will not actually register it as a BEAR until it’s like 40 feet away and Doggo decides he’s gonna fight it, so you gotta Usain Bolt you and 50 lbs of Anger Dog four blocks back to the apartment, and cry becuase while you wanted to feel alive and the sensation of your heart  beating again, you didn’t want it THAT HARD.

  • Mosquitoes

jesus what was wrong with people

They suddenly had money, fridges, freezers, and access to a variety of foods - all things that hadn’t been widely available before. Suddenly people had access to things that were beyond the dreams of people just a 100 years prior.

Enter corporations willing to go “oh yeah, you know what’s great (now that you can afford it)? Cold beef soup, served in a glass. Drink up your beef!”

Early 40s/50s foods are something I’m very passionate about.

They had no concept of what flavors tasted good together so they tried everything. The biggest ideas that were latched on to were things like loafs with layers that compose your entire meal and the suspension of basically anything/everything in jello (jello actually helped food last longer, because the gelatin sheltered whatever ingredients were used from bacteria. So, naturally, you put a fish in it).

Also pineapple. It was harder to get before then so the sudden availability of it made people go nuts. Bananas too to a degree.

this is the same era that brought us “gee bill!”
