Newswire: Director of The Blind Side to tell the heartwarming tale of Lenny Dykstra

by David Anthony

With The Blind Side, director John Lee Hancock secured an Oscar nomination—and helped Sandra Bullock actually win one—by telling the inspirational story of Michael Oher, a homeless youth turned Baltimore Ravens (and now Tennessee Titans) offensive tackle. Now, Hancock has reunited with The Blind Side’s producer Gil Netter in hopes of recreating that awards show magic by telling the story of former New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies center fielder—and convicted felon—Lenny Dykstra.

There’s no details yet on who will star in Hancock’s Dykstra biopic—although, after he was released from prison in 2013, Dykstra suggested he’d like to see Matt Damon or Mark Wahlberg portray him. Whoever it ends up being, it’ll be interesting to see how they and Hancock handle Dykstra’s more sordid affairs, of which there are many. In 2012, he was sentenced to a six-month prison ...

Great Job, Internet!: Batman, Gandalf, and Darth Vader go into battle in this epic animation reel

by William Hughes

If you’re a gamer, there’s a pretty good chance you've seen something produced by Blur Studio, even if you don’t recognize the name. That’s because Blur doesn't make games—they make game trailers.

The California-based computer animation studio has produced trailers for some of the most heavily marketed games of the last few years, including The Elder Scrolls Online, Halo 4, Bioshock Infinite, the Batman Arkham games, and many more. The company recently released an animation reel cutting together footage from its various projects into a gorgeous five-minute symphony of violence and motion and featuring some of the most famous warriors in the history of pop culture—and also, somewhat inexplicably, some Pepperidge Farms Goldfish.

21 Things You Might Not Know About Gremlins

by Miss Cellania

The other big movie that opened on June 8, 1984, was Gremlins. It was a big weekend. The weird horror/comedy for kids is 30 years old. Doesn't that make you feel ancient? In honor of the occasion, let's have some Gremlins trivia to spark your memory! A sampling:

3. CHRIS COLUMBUS DIDN’T WRITE GREMLINS WITH THE IDEA THAT IT WOULD ACTUALLY BE MADE.

He wrote it as a spec script and writing sample. It found its way into the hands of Spielberg, who explained that, “It's one of the most original things I've come across in many years, which is why I bought it.”

9. TIM BURTON WAS IN CONTENTION TO DIRECT IT.

There was a lot of buzz surrounding Burton after the success of his short film, Frankenweenie—so much so that Spielberg considered him to direct Gremlins. But the fact that Burton had yet to direct a feature film worked against him, and the gig was given to Joe Dante. A year later, Burton released his first theatrical feature, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.

You can say hindsight is 20/20 about many of the 21 Things You Might Not Know About Gremlins at mental_floss.

Weezer’s Drummer Catches A Frisbee

Patrick Wilson keeps the beat while catching a Frisbee thrown from the audience during a Weezer concert in St. Augustine, Florida, Friday night. If he had not seen it coming, and reached out at the right time, we may be looking at a picture of a disaster instead of a cool catch. Dave Franco Joins Brother In Film Based On Making Of ‘The Room’

by Germain Lussier

Dave Franco The Room

James Franco‘s upcoming film based on the book, The Disaster Artist, just got a little weirder. The book tells the behind the scenes story of the making of cult classic, The Room. One of the film’s co-stars Greg Sestero (“Oh hi, Mark”) co-wrote the book about the unfathomable production of the notoriously terrible film and Franco purchased the rights earlier this year. He’ll direct and play one of the film’s two leads, The Room director and star Tommy WiseauSeth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are producing.

One of the funniest threads in the book is the awkward bromance between Wiseau and Sestero and, in classic Franco fashion, he’s upping the awkward. It seems his younger brother Dave Franco (Neighbors) has been tapped to play Sestero, the film’s main character.

Like all things with The Disaster Artist, this news broke not from a major news site. Instead, Dave Franco made the announcement at a recent midnight screening of The Room in Los Angeles. Here’s an excerpt from 3 News, who was in attendance.

The Room had one of its monthly screenings in Los Angeles last night, curated by the film’s star, director, writer and producer Tommy Wiseau.

To the crowd’s delight, actor Dave Franco stood up during a Q&A session and asked: “Tommy, how do you feel about me playing Greg Sestero in the movie?”

The crowd erupted into cheers.

“That’s what I say: It’s a good choice!” said Wiseau.

It actually is a good choice. In the book, Sestero is the focus. A kind, struggling actor who befriends the odd filmmaker/actor and eventually ends up starring opposite him in The Room. The whole story is told 100% in-on-the-joke of The Room, but has lots of heart and life lessons too. The Francos have great chemistry and if James is playing Tommy, Dave as a younger, more vibrant, kinder counterpart makes sense.

Besides this loose actor attachments, we don’t know exactly what the latest on the movie is. The status of the script, if there’s funding, etc. But it certainly won’t be a big, Hollywood production. That said, with both Francos attached, it should come together pretty easily once all the pieces are set.

What do you think of Dave and James Franco playing the two stars of The Room?

Triumph The Insult Comic Dog Getting Own TV Series

by Germain Lussier
Corey

For the video below. One of my all time favorites.

Triumph TV Show

Someone is getting a new TV series….FOR ME TO POOP ON. Yes, it’s true, Robert Smigel’s cult comedy puppet, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, is getting his own TV show. It’ll be part of the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block, which will soon run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly.

Triumph’s show is currently untitled but will co-star 30 Rock‘s Jack McBrayer. Read about the plot of the Triumph TV show below.

The news of the Triumph TV show came as Adult Swim announced their 2014-2015 line up. There’s no set date on when the show would premiere but you’d have to imagine sometime by the end of this year. It was co-created by Triumph’s driving force, Robert Smigel along with Michael Koman and David Feldman.

According to the LA Times, it’s about “the washed-up and debauched former star of a wholesome ‘Lassie’-style series from the 1980s. In modern day, Triumph seeks out his former boy costar.” So basically, Triumph and McBrayer’s character were on a TV show together and decades later, with the boy grown up and living on his own, he has to deal with Triumph again.

The show is going to be a half hour sitcom and narratively driven, which is different from how we’re used to see Triumph. Smigel debuted the puppet on Late Night With Conan O’Brien back in 1997 and has since made regular appearances on the show. He’s also done multiple different spin offs, interviews, one offs, but nothing to this extent.

Fans of Triumph know this isn’t the first time the puppet and McBrayer have teamed up either. They did the below skit back in 2012.

Does it seem like a show featuring Triumph and McBrayer could work? Yes. Could it work as a 30 minute sitcom? That feels a little less certain. Then, how long can that conceit actually go? Multiple seasons? I guess we’ll see in the coming months. I always felt that great thing about Triumph was you only got him in small doses which made them much more special.

Still, this show definitely has my interest. What about you?

New ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ TV Spot and Beautiful Fan Art

by Germain Lussier
Corey

For the first poster.

And the fact that this movie is going to be awesome.

Matt Ferguson - Guardians of the Galaxy header

According to writer/director James Gunn, Thursday night’s NBA Finals game will include both 30- and 60-second commercials for his upcoming Marvel adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy. No need to wait for Lebron James and Tony Parker to suit up, though, as the first spot has already appeared online. It has a few awesome new shots including a few of Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser (he’s the hooded guy at the beginning) and Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) affirming the badassness of the Guardians. It’s super cool.

And if that’s not exciting enough, the Poster Posse – an international group of artists who do art based on the same upcoming movies – have released the first batch of art for Guardians of the Galaxy. There’s some truly beautiful and interesting stuff to be seen, including an already iconic mash-up of the 1977 one sheet for Star Wars by Matt Ferguson. Check out the Guardians of the Galaxy fan art and TV spot below.

First up, here’s the TV spot. Man I cannot wait for this movie:

Beautiful stuff right? Well how does it compare to some of these? This is just a handful of the first batch of Guardians of the Galaxy posters made by the Poster Posse and posted by Blurppy. Head there for more and back tomorrow for the second batch.

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

John Oliver Crashed The FCC Comments Page With His Net Neutrality Segment

by Penn Collins
Corey

This show is good and he kills it here.

The FCC comments page went down on Monday morning following the viral distribution of Sunday night’s Last Week Tonight bit in which John Oliver basically implored people to take action. Of course, the FCC, never one to let on to any one source of influence, has stated that the site was down due to high traffic volume, but it wasnt’ sure if John Oliver‘s show was the cause of that volume.

I’m here to help. Yes. It was the sole cause. Don’t be stupid or coy, FCC.

I mean, Oliver went on a long rant about the problem at hand and simply put up the FCC comment page URL with no fancy graphics or jokes. He wanted people to reach out, and after the video went viral (800,000 or so vies as of press time), they did.

In case you missed it, here it is. Get to writin’ to your FCC.
