Newswire: Here’s the actual math behind Silicon Valley’s dick joke

Silicon Valley viewers will be handily familiar with the dick joke from the first season finale. Within the show, the gag—an in-depth mathematical analysis of how long it would take someone to jerk off an entire room of tech nerds—gave protagonist Richard Hendriks the inspiration he needed to make Pied Piper a success. But do the group’s equations really hold up?
As it turns out, the show’s creator, Mike Judge, enlisted some honest-to-God mathematicians at Stanford University to figure out the max “mean jerk rate,” as well as other functions related to “shaft ratios: and “receptiveness to the presenter.” The resulting paper, “Optimal Tip-To-Tip Efficiency: A Model For Male Audience Stimulation” is below, and it’s as thorough and detailed as anything you saw on the show’s whiteboards. Great Job, Internet!: Math finally used for good in a statistical quest for America’s best burrito

After giving statistics nerds a happy little boner with their analysis of Bob Ross paintings, FiveThirtyEight is back with a project that should settle many a drunken argument: a methodical quest for America’s best burrito. The ambitious result is the Burrito Bracket, inspired by FiveThirtyEight founder Nate Silver’s typically thorough blog of the same name. But while Silver’s original quest was limited to Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood, this time the Burrito Bracket has gone national.
Based on geographic analysis of the 67,391 burrito joints (or, as Silver calls them, BSEs— “Burrito selling establishments”) currently listed on Yelp, Silver has divided the nation into four regions: The Northeast, which stretches from Maine to Missouri and includes Silver’s old stomping grounds in Chicago; The South, including East Texas; The West, which includes Alaska and Hawaii but not California; and California, which gets its own category because ...
Coming Distractions: Russians ruin Denzel Washington’s reading time in The Equalizer trailer

Proving our longstanding theory that Russian mobsters ruin everything, The Equalizer is all prepared to be a nice movie about Denzel Washington working at a home improvement store and forming a book club with Chloë Moretz, when some thickly accented thugs—taking some downtime from tormenting Liam Neeson and Nicolas Cage—do something terrible yet again. As is de rigueur for men with a certain set of skills and a shady past, Washington is then called into action, forced to right wrongs and shoot people to an Eminem soundtrack before he can return to his quiet life of price checks and Hemingway paperbacks.
As Washington steps into the TV role once played by Edward Woodward, he revisits his own violent past by reteaming with his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua. And Sony is so pleased with their results, it’s already begun making plans for a franchise that could ...

Nickelodeon’s ‘Hey Dude’ Cast Reunited, And No One Really Knows What Happened At The Reunion
From the desk of shameless nostalgia grabs: The cast of Nickelodeon‘s short-lived and somewhat, kinda-adored live-action TV series Hey Dude took place over the weekend. And all we got was this grainy picture.
For the ATX Television Festival, the now-adult actors got together, including the guy who play Mr. Enrnst and Christine Taylor, who is pretty famous for being Ben Stiller’s wife and appearing in a lot of his films. She was also Sally Sitwell from Arrested Development, which makes her awesome.
Several of the cast are long-retired from acting, including the guy who played the Native America ranchhand, Danny. In fact, Danny wasn’t there because “no one really knows where he is.” So, I guess that means Danny’s dead or just deep off the grid. Let’s hope it’s the latter.
Awesome.
Anyway, here’s a link to the video, but you might as well just save your time and assume it was pleasant and boring, just like the show.

Lovable Rascal Bill Murray Now Photobombing Engagement Photos
Normally when a boozy old coot invades your personal space it’s a bad thing, but there’s something about knowing Bill Murray could walk into your home at any moment makes the world a more magical place. Because Bill Murray can do whatever he wants. He can crash your party, your wedding, or your karaoke room. He’s probably allowed to cook in restaurants too. That is the charm of Bill Murray. Now he’s crashing engagement photos as a photographer at Fia Forever Wedding Photography explains.
It all started with an innocent little engagement shoot in downtown Charleston with our lovely couple Ashley Donald & Erik Rogers. We were roaming the streets of downtown Charleston (the most romantic city in the country, btw) doing their engagement pictures… and most of the time when I have an attractive couple, you get to hear all sorts of noises around you – from whistles, to “you look hottttt” to “congratulations!” – I set the couple down on that little staircase to get ready for a shot and I hear people talking in the back and as I’m looking through the lens, the couple seems stunned and distracted… I think to myself – oh great, someone is bothering them – I turn around and I see Mr. Murray standing there with his shirt pulled up and belly proudly on display which he is patting pretty loudly in an attempt to make the couple laugh – Needless to say I was stunned and I invited Mr. Murray to join the couple for a quick shot – He obliged and congratulated them and went on his way… leaving behind an extremely happy couple and this photo that will be forever remembered by this couple (and us!!!).
Jokes on them. The three of them are now legally engaged. They’re going to make some cute kids.

A Collection Of Mind Blowing Shadow Art Works

Most of us start our discovery of the power of shadow by making shadow puppets on the wall, and for some this leads to an artistic exploration of how shadows work, which helps us add a degree of realism to our artwork.
But for some artists merely incorporating shadows into the overall work just isn’t enough, and these admirers of the shady side of life go on to create works which rely on light and shadow for full visual effect.
Some works come out looking sketchy, others cast shadows that are simply perfect representations of real life, and all the shadow art works in this collection will blow your mind!

‘Dumb and Dumber To’ Trailer: Lloyd and Harry Are Back and Dumber Than Ever

Dumb and Dumber To is actually happening. It’s incredibly hard to believe but it’s true. Twenty years after the release of the comedy smash by the Farrelly Brothers, Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey are reprising their roles to continue the story of numbskulls Harry and Lloyd. Set in real time after the events of the first film, the duo set off to find Harry’s daughter. In the process, of course, they do lots of really dumb stuff.
The first trailer is out and it almost feels like a Saturday Night Live skit. This is actually real? Yes, it is, and it’ll hit theaters November 14. Below, watch the first Dumb and Dumber To trailer and see some new photos too.
Thanks to Jimmy Fallon for debuting this trailer.
Dumb and Dumber To Trailer
From early test screenings, I heard really good things about this film but — I have to admit — I didn’t laugh once during this trailer. It felt really, really awkward. However, I’m going to chalk that up to the shock of seeing Daniels and Carrey in these roles once again as well as the fact this is an R-rated movie. A green-band trailer surely can’t show the best of the the Farrellys have to offer.
Here are some new photos followed by a description. What did you think of the Dumb and Dumber To trailer?
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their signature roles as Lloyd and Harry in the sequel to the smash hit that took the physical comedy and kicked it in the nuts: Dumb and Dumber To. The original film’s directors, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, take Lloyd and Harry on a road trip to find a child Harry never knew he had and the responsibility neither should ever, ever be given.
The Farrelly brothers produce Dumb and Dumber To alongside Riza Aziz and Joey McFarland of Red Granite Pictures. They are joined by fellow producers Charles Wessler and Bradley Thomas. Universal Pictures will distribute the film in the United States, Canada and select international territories.

LOL: ‘Paddington’ Image Inspires Horror Movie Mash-Ups

A live-action adaptation of the popular book series Paddington is one of this year’s big Christmas films. The Weinstein Company released a teaser trailer a few months back but it offered only a glimpse at the talking bear. Now, the first images from the film – which features Nicole Kidman, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters and Jim Broadbent – have been released. That, in itself, isn’t particularly exciting. What the photos spawned is.
In the photo (seen above) Paddington looks rather ominous, which inspired an online meme called “#CreepyPaddington.” There, people have been photoshopping the bear into various horror movies and the results are pretty hilarious. Check out a bunch of Creepy Paddington images below.
Paddington will open Christmas Day and Colin Firth provides the voice of the bear. Here are the two official images via Flicks and Bits.

Paddington, produced by David Heyman and directed by Paul King, opens December 25, 2014. It stars Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters and Jim Broadbent. Here’s a plot description:
Adapted from Michael Bond’s beloved books, Paddington follows the comic misadventures of a polite young bear with an endearing talent for comic chaos.
Paddington has grown up deep in the Peruvian jungle with his Aunt Lucy who, inspired by a chance encounter with an English explorer, has raised her nephew to dream of an exciting life in London. When an earthquake destroys their home, Aunt Lucy decides to smuggle her young nephew on board a boat bound for England, in search of a better life. Arriving alone at Paddington Station, Paddington soon finds that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family, who find him with a label tied around his neck which reads ‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’ They offer him a temporary home whilst he searches for the explorer who impressed Aunt Lucy all those years before.
But when Paddington catches the eye of a sinister, seductive taxidermist, it isn’t long before his home – and very existence – is under threat …
