Markets in everything: discomfort furniture
Sitting for longer than four hours a day increases a person’s chance of suffering chronic disease.
Now, inspired to address the lack of physical activity in modern work life, one French designer believes he might have created the answer.
With just two legs, the ‘Inactivite’ chair relies on the user engaging the muscles in their core to keep it upright.
Benoit Malta, the man behind the creation, said he wanted to encourage movement for those office workers who spent around 70 per cent of the day sitting down.

Fright Week: Fear of Mirrors
When I was a kid, I watched this scary TV show called One Step Beyond. It was kind of like The Twilight Zone, except the stories were more haunting and supernatural.
An especially frightening episode was called The Clown. Everyone loves the circus. Everyone loves a clown.1
John Newland, the show's narrator: "Laughter is an international language, and the clown, the prince of laughter."
"Look, a clown!"
A jealous husband behaves in a physically and verbally abusive fashion towards his young wife any time she's near another man. Why, he's even jealous of Pippo the Clown, a simple and silent entertainer who brings balloons and joy to the diner patrons.
Mr. Abusive sees the clown touching his wife's blond hair and freaks out. He grabs Pippo's scissors and cuts off a chunk of her hair. The wife screams and runs away into the carnival campgrounds, which is conveniently nearby. Pippo acts in a menacing fashion and scares the husband away.
The wife wanders around the carnival grounds and into the clown's tent, where she cries into a wig. Pippo returns and tries to fix her hair and cheer her up. She eventually starts laughing and hugs the clown.
Then the obnoxious lout hears laughter and enters the trailer, finding his wife with the clown. "You dirty cheap one, I've had it..." He grabs her and slaps her and throws her down to the ground.
Pippo gets defensive and angry and starts choking the husband, who grabs those handy scissors and stabs........ HIS WIFE! Killing her!
Pippo picks her up, husband drops the scissors and slips away, and guess who becomes the leading murder suspect. The simple clown, who keeps trying to revive the dead girl by making her laugh.
The Strong Man: "Help, help, somebody help, the clown's killed a dame!" [it's 1960]
The husband wanders around in a daze, stopping in front of a pawn shop with a mirror in the window.
Mr. Killer glances away from the mirror for a moment and guess who appears, trying to strangle him.
He whips around to see the clown and.... there's no one there!!
This happens a few more times, where the clown appears in the mirror, the guy turns around and there's nobody there...
Now this was very scary and horrifying when I was a small child. I was afraid to look at a mirror for weeks. The thought of seeing Pippo the Clown standing behind me, strangling me, was terrifying. For a brief period I had Spectrophobia (also known as Catoptrophobia), a fear of mirrors:
Generally, an individual that deals with Spectrophobia has been traumatized in an event where they believe they have seen or heard apparitions or ghosts. The individual could also become traumatized by horror films, television shows, or by nightmares. This fear could be the result of a trauma involving mirrors. It could also be the result of the person’s superstitious fear of being watched through the mirror.
"Traumatized" is a bit excessive... I got over it. Watching the episode today, I see how campy and cheesy it is, with its soundtrack of "vampy" music as a stand-in for the wife's sex appeal. Her aura of youthful innocence was over the top, and the husband comes off as a creepy pedophile.2
And fortunately, I never developed a fear of clowns...
But I have to say, I didn't make it through the OCULUS Trailer, not on Halloween night. And I think I'll have to try the ‘strange-face in the mirror' illusion another night.
I hope you enjoyed Fright Week. Check out the other spooky posts:

Footnotes
1 Everyone knows about coulrophobia, the very common fear of clowns.
2 The Flaming Nose TV Blog informs us that the actors playing the husband and wife were 40 and 18 years old, respectively. No wonder he comes off as an abusive pedophile... The strangling clown gif is also from the Flaming Nose.

AEP : Dutch marriage proposal wrecks house
A Dutchman's plan to propose to his girlfriend has ended with a mobile crane smashing the roof of a house and forcing the evacuation of two others.
The man had wanted to surprise his partner by descending in front of her bedroom in the town of IJsselstein to sing her a song and pop the question.
But the unsecured crane he used instead toppled into a neighbour's house.
The woman still said yes, Dutch media report, and the couple are now said to be celebrating in Paris.
Following the initial impact, more damage was done when the crane fell again during an attempt to right it.

AEP : The YotaPhone 2 has two faces, zero gimmicks

Above all else, the YotaPhone 2 is cool. Within minutes of getting my hands on it, I was telling my colleagues about how I had just placed my first phone call where I dialed with the butt-side of the phone. Then I played a game of chess — rendered in a sharp and attractive monochrome — and I smiled at the ease of it all. I also set my own wallpaper for the electronic paper display and immediately sought someone to show it off to. The YotaPhone does everything you’d expect from a modern Android smartphone, but then goes beyond that with its thoughtfully designed and integrated e-paper functionality.
The chess I played on the rear screen is one of a number of bundled YotaApps — there’s also checkers, sudoku, and YotaRSS — that have been tailored to work specifically on the YotaPhone’s rear display. Company CEO Vlad Martynov announced Twitter integration during the phone’s launch event in London this week, so the app selection is growing, but the phone also comes with a YotaMirror mode that just puts the full Android experience on the back panel — meaning that any app can be a rear-screen app. The e-paper display is obviously much slower and this feels like a function to be used in battery emergencies only, but it’s still a neat addition for when you want to, for example, read an article in the browser without deploying the full-power display.
The e-paper display is just a ton of fun
Being able to outsource basic phone tasks to the electronic-paper display feels almost like cheating. I can check notifications and place or receive calls without activating the front AMOLED screen, which, over the course of a full day, should help extend the 2,500mAh battery’s usefulness.
Yota’s software is surprisingly well thought out, though it’s quite unintuitive at first. It took me a few tries before I was comfortable with what every swipe would do and how long I would have to wait for a response from the e-paper screen. It's a capacitive touchscreen, but its responsiveness is that of a typical e-reader and it exhibits some ghosting: faint traces of images and text linger on for a while after the picture has been refreshed. I also notice a few slowdowns and moments of lag when using the regular display, which may be owing to the slightly older Snapdragon 800 chip inside or just imperfect optimization of the software. The good news is that the YotaPhone 2 runs a pretty much stock version of Android 4.4 and will be upgraded to Android 5.0 in the future.
Physically, the YotaPhone 2 is like a slightly smaller HTC One M8 made out of plastic. It has the same sort of all-around curvature that makes it a pleasure to handle, and its grippier material means it doesn’t slip out of the hand as easily as the M8. Yota has used a magnesium chassis inside the phone and reinforced its exterior shell with glass fiber. The result is a rigid, durable device that feels and looks good. The YotaPhone 2’s AMOLED display and general dimensions also remind me of the 2014 Moto X, another well-designed device. Having spent the past month using the utilitarian Nexus 5, I found the YotaPhone 2 luxurious by comparison — it’s much sleeker in appearance and more comfortable in use. The one downside to the YotaPhone 2’s industrial design is the placement of the side-mounted power and volume buttons (the latter of which cleverly disguise the nano-SIM slot), which have little travel to them and feel unpleasantly spongy.
The YotaPhone 2 is expensive, but unique
Like all devices that try to do more than one thing, the YotaPhone 2 has its issues, but unlike the vast majority, those compromises are not enough to quell my enthusiasm. There’s something legitimately new here, and it’s done well enough to make me want to use it regularly. Android phones from smaller companies always give rise to concerns about software updates and future support — it’s not easy being a global distributor dealing with tens if not hundreds of network operators — but the YotaPhone 2 sticks to a stock Android experience that should simplify things and also comes preloaded with the Google Play Store and the full suite of Google services.
The one shortcoming that the YotaPhone 2 will struggle to overcome, though, is its affordability compared to its competitors. Its UK price of £555 is nearly £200 more than it would cost me to buy a Nexus 5 and an Amazon Kindle. In fact, it’s more expensive than an Xperia Z3 plus a Kindle or an Xperia Z3 Compact — the top phone that I’d currently recommend — together with the illuminated Kindle Paperwhite. And yet, none of those combinations give me both the phone and the e-reader in one curvy package that slides easily into my pocket. The YotaPhone 2 is expensive, but it’s also unique.

Former iTunes Engineer Claims Apple Aimed to Block '100% of Non-iTunes Clients'
A former iTunes engineer testified in a federal antitrust case against Apple Friday that he worked on a project "intended to block 100% of non-iTunes clients" and "keep out third-party players" that competed with Apple’s iPod.Subpoenaed by the plaintiffs to prove that Apple's moves to block outside music from playing on the iPod drove up prices, Schultz told the court that his project was codenamed "Candy" and that he didn't really want to talk about his work on iTunes from 2006 to 2007.
Schultz went on to reiterate Apple's argument in the case, suggesting the security measures introduced in iTunes reflected the digital music landscape at the time. Record companies, Apple says, demanded DRM and forced Apple to keep the iPod secure.
Both Schultz and Apple also argued Apple's DRM efforts were designed to protect its systems and user experiences, which could have been compromised by being opened up to third-party music players and file formats. Schultz did, however, say that this also led to iPod's market dominance.
Schultz was the final witness in the case, and Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said she plans on sending the case to the jury for deliberations next week. The plaintiffs are requesting $350 million in damages, which could triple under antitrust laws.
