by Gian Danton/Ivan Carlo

A SAGA DO MONSTRO DO PÂNTANO.

DO INFERNO.

New Tiny Ultrasound Camera Sees What's in Your Heart ...really

by Kevin Murray
Developed by a team at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the device consists of a 1.5-mm-wide disc-shaped head, from which trails 13 tiny joined cables. The idea is that it will be inserted into a patient's coronary blood vessels or heart, snaking its way through while being pushed or pulled from outside the body via an integrated 430-micron-wide guide wire, all the while using the cables to transmit ultrasound imagery.

Its head is built around a single silicon chip, which is equipped with a dual-ring array of 56 ultrasound transmit elements and 48 receive elements. Much of the processing of the ultrasound data is performed onboard the chip itself, meaning that less information has to carried outside the body – this is why it requires no more than 13 cables, allowing its consolidated "umbilical cord" to stay skinny and flexible enough to easily move through blood vessels. Undeterred by failing Nook, Barnes & Noble will launch new model this year

by Cyrus Farivar
Barnes & Noble

Despite the fact that Nook sales plummeted by 66 percent during the 2013 holiday season, struggling book retailer Barnes & Noble isn't giving up on its e-reader. In fact, the company will be putting more effort into its e-reader in the near future. In its latest quarterly earnings report, company CEO Michael P. Huseby announced Barnes & Noble would unveil a new Nook device in the coming months.

“We remain committed to delivering world-class reading experiences to our customers through our reading centric e-Ink and color reading devices,” CEO Michael P. Huseby wrote in a statement on Wednesday. “The Company is actively engaged in discussions with several world-class hardware partners related to device development as well as content packaging and distribution. As a result, we plan to launch a new Nook color device in early fiscal 2015.”

That could put the new Nook’s debut as early as July 1, 2014.

Perfect Bacon Bowl: Microwave Bacon Horror

by drew

According to the box, “Everything tastes better in a bacon bowl.” The Perfect Bacon Bowl is a tool which you use, if you hate your body, to microwave strips of bacon into a bowl shape. Believe it or not, it’s frequently bought with the StufZ Burger Press, which has to be neck-and-neck with eating every meal out of a bacon bowl in terms of culinary horror.

Make sure you read the dozens of reviews paying tribute to a life made more complete with the addition of Perfect Bacon Bowl.

→ Nokia X: Android and Windows Phone collide

Tom Warren:

The X introduces a new “forked” version of Android that’s akin to what Amazon does with its Kindle Fire line. Nokia is effectively taking the open-source elements of Android and then bolting on its own services, a Windows Phone-like UI, and yet another Android app store. The downside to this is that the Nokia X devices won’t have access to Google’s Play store or Google-specific apps like Gmail, Chrome, Maps, and others. However, Android apps will run on the devices with only limited changes required by developers.

There’s a good chance this will get nixed shortly by Microsoft or simply be a market flop at launch. But there’s a small chance that this might become the most interesting mobile story of the year.

This kind of approach won’t be easy, and its success is anything but a sure thing. But I think it’s Microsoft’s only chance to break into the mobile platform business, if they still want to be in it. Windows Phone 7 and 8 have been complete failures with no hope in sight, and the sooner Microsoft can admit that to themselves, the sooner they can try another strategy — if it’s not too late.

Do We Really Have a Shortage of STEM Workers?

by Unknown Lamer
New pweidema writes "Michael Teitelbaum, a senior research associate in the Labor and Worklife Program at Harvard Law School who has been writing a book on the subject of the current state of employment in science and technology fields, recently spoke at an Education Writers Association Conference about the 'STEM Worker Shortage: Does It Exist and Is Education to Blame?' The National Science Board's biennial book, Science and Engineering Indicators , consistently finds that the U.S. produces many more STEM graduates than the workforce can absorb. Meanwhile, employers say managers are struggling to find qualified workers in STEM fields. What explains these apparently contradictory trends? And as the shortage debate rages, what do we know about the pipeline of STEM-talented students from kindergarten to college, and what happens to them in the job market? An article LA Times summarizes his findings of his findings on the STEM hype: '...some of it comes from the country’s longtime cycle of waxing and waning interest in science; attention seems to focus on science every 10 to 15 years before slacking off. The only forces pushing the idea of STEM doom, he said, are those that have something to gain from it. Mostly those are STEM employers ... that want to pack the labor force with people to suppress wages ... Joining the chorus are universities that want more funding for science programs...'"

Markets in Everything: Protest Rights

by Alex Tabarrok

At the Olympics if you want to protest a decision, you must have cash:

The reason that Mathieu — and many other coaches across most Olympic sports — make certain they always have a specific amount of cash on hand is that if they want to protest an official decision during competition, they need more than just a strong opinion and an angry yell.

They also need money.

…Depending on the sport, the fee varies: for luge, it is 50 euros (about $67). Cross-country skiing, like snowboard and Alpine skiing, demands 100 Swiss francs (about $112) but stipulates that all protests must be submitted in English. Bobsled and skeleton are among the most expensive: they require a deposit of 100 euros before any protest will even be considered. If multiple countries want to make a similar protest, sharing the tab is allowed.

Hat tip to the excellent PriorProbability who also points out that if your protest is successful you get your money back so these payments are also protest bets.

Why many government jobs are a bad idea for many academics

by Tyler Cowen

When the Obama White House requested that I serve on the National Council on the Humanities, I agreed to have my name put forward. I went through the lengthy FBI check, including repeated probing of friends about my nonexistent drug use.

But in the end the White House decided not to move my nomination forward. There were two reasons. First, taxes. In 2009 and 2010, the years of my divorce, I filed my taxes late — four weeks and 10 days, respectively. Second, I was not willing to commit to never criticizing the administration, nor to restricting my publishing agenda to topics that were unlikely to be controversial. There is just no point trying to be a public intellectual if you can’t speak your mind. This requirement was conveyed and discussed through phone calls; I have no written record to prove it. But that was how it went.

Why did the White House want such restrictions? Lawyers told me that the administration didn’t want to have to deal with even one news cycle being overtaken by media frenzy about something some low-level official had said. The administration was trying to survive in our 21st-century media environment.

That is from Danielle Allen.

Comcast gets paid by Netflix and might still want money from Cogent

by Jon Brodkin
Comcast

Comcast's success in extracting payments from Netflix won't end its dispute with Cogent, a network operator that distributes Netflix video and other traffic, Cogent's CEO said.

Cogent operates one of several networks that Netflix uses to distribute video across the Internet. With Netflix now paying Comcast for a direct connection to that ISP's network, Cogent's role in passing traffic from Netflix to Comcast will be reduced or potentially eliminated.

But just because Netflix traffic will now flow directly from Netflix to Comcast doesn't mean that Comcast will drop its demand for payment from Cogent.

Surveillance evangelist arrested in California in bribery investigation

by Ars Staff
Jose Susumo Azano Matsura, a businessman, at his home in Coronado, CA.
10News

This post originally appeared on the Electronic Frontier Foundation's website. The author, Dave Maass, is a media relations coordinator and investigative researcher for EFF.

FBI agents arrested a Mexican tycoon named Jose Susumo Azano Matsura at his Coronado, California, home on Wednesday as part of a political bribery investigation based on captured e-mails, seized banking records, and covertly recorded conversations.

The unfolding scandal is soaked in irony: Azano is a surveillance evangelist whose company won a secret, no-bid contract with the Mexican military for computer and mobile phone hacking and spying technology in 2011. He is chairman of a company called Security Tracking Devices SA de CV, and he is now chained to a tracking device—on house arrest.

Open access science publisher demands full availability of data

by John Timmer

Yesterday, the open access publisher Public Library of Science announced a change to its data sharing requirements. Previously, anyone publishing in one of its journals (including PLoS One, the largest scientific journal around) implicitly agreed to make the data that they used in the paper available to other researchers, which typically meant that the other researchers had to make a formal request for it. From now on, however, the PLoS journals will require authors to sign a data availability statement that guarantees that all the data used in a paper is publicly accessible to anyone at the moment the paper goes live.

That includes things like images, DNA sequence reads, raw cell counts, and so forth. The publisher suggests three ways that researchers can meet the requirements. If the underlying data (like cell counts) is numerical, it can simply be published in a table in the paper itself. If it's a bit larger, researchers can compress it and make the archive a supplement to the paper, which PLoS will host on its servers. If it's larger still, researchers should look to a third-party service; hosting it on an institutional server would also be an option.

PLoS accepts that this won't work in some cases, as confidentiality is required for patient data, and some researchers rely on third parties for data. These exceptions, however, should be just that: exceptional. The vast majority of data should be subject to the new rules.

Apple Planning Fix for OS X SSL Bug as New Research Reveals iMessage, Other Apps Affected

by Richard Padilla
Apple has confirmed that it will issue a software update "very soon" to patch the security flaw found in OS X that allows attackers to capture or modify data protected by the SSL/TLS protocols in Safari, reports Reuters. The vulnerability of OS X to the bug was detailed by security firm CrowdStrike and a Google engineer last Friday, and came right after Apple released iOS 7.0.6 to fix the SSL-related issues on iOS.

However, the security flaw, which has been termed "GoToFail" by security specialists due to the improperly used "goto" command that triggers it, may be affecting more than just Safari. Independent privacy researcher Ashkan Soltani has pointed out on his Twitter (via Forbes) that Apple's vulnerable SSL library is also used by apps including FaceTime, iMessage, Twitter, Calendar, Keynote, Mail, iBooks, Software Update, and more.

gotofail_list_of_apps A list of apps deemed vulnerable to the SSL bug found in OS X and iOS by security researcher Ashkan Soltani
Soltani does point out that apps such as iMessage and FaceTime have addded security measures that weaken the effects of the security flaw, but also added that the initial iCloud login used to authenticate such apps may also be compromised. The researcher states that other parts of the protocol such as the handshake between a service and a device are vulnerable to an attack as well, and will need to be secured by Apple.

Currently, users can check whether or not their computers are affected by the vulnerability by visiting gotofail.com in Safari. As users wait for a fix to the flaw, CrowdStrike recommends avoiding untrusted and unsecured WiFi networks while traveling. The site also recommends that users update to iOS 7.0.6 if they have not yet installed it on their iOS devices.

TOP 10 – Os menores carros do Brasil

by Ricardo de Oliveira

smart fortwo nightstyle edition 3 700x464 TOP 10 Os menores carros do Brasil

1) Smart Fortwo – 2,69 – R$ 51.900
2) JAC J2 – 3,53 – R$ 32.990
3) Fiat 500 – 3,54 – R$ 44.390
4) Chery QQ – 3,55 – R$ 19.990
5) Effa M100 – 3,56 – R$ 24.980
6) Kia Picanto – 3,59 – R$ 34.900
7) Volkswagen up! – 3,60 – R$ 28.900
8) Suzuki Jimny – 3,65 – R$ 62.990
9) Chery Face – 3,70 – R$ 29.990
10) MINI Cooper – 3,73 – R$ 76.950
