Wearing a book
Books are objects to read from. This is true now, and so it was in medieval times. Between then and now, however, medieval books were recycled, old-fashioned as they had become after the dawn of printing. These three items show one particular function served by recycled manuscript material: as lining of clothes - and a hat. All three images show linings cut from parchment leaves: the shape of a vest cut from an Icelandic manuscript dating to 1375-1400 (middle); a late-fifteenth century dress of a Cistercian nun in the convent of Wienhausen supported by a 13th-century Latin text (top); and the lining of a bishop’s miter cut from 13th-century Norse love poetry (bottom) - I blogged about the latter here. While the stiff properties of animal skin made it perfect for supporting soft materials such as clothes and hats, it is an odd idea that someone would walk around wearing medieval books - not to mention a bishop preaching with love poetry on his head. On the bright side, thanks to all this recycling, at least parts of these precious books survive.

Secret city design tricks manipulate your behaviour

When Selena Savic walks down a city street, she sees it differently to most people. Whereas other designers might admire the architecture, Savic sees a host of hidden tricks intended to manipulate our behaviour and choices without us realising – from benches that are deliberately uncomfortable to sculptures that keep certain citizens away.
Modern cities are rife with these “unpleasant designs”, says Savic, a PhD student at the Ecole Polytechnique Federerale de Lausanne in Switzerland, who co-authored a book on the subject this year. Once you know these secret tricks are there, it will transform how you see your surroundings. “We call this a silent agent,” says Savic. “These designs are hidden, or not apparent to people they don’t target.” Are you aware of how your city is manipulating you?
In 1999, the UK opened a Design Against Crime research centre, and authorities in Australia and the US have since followed suit. Many of the interventions these groups pioneered are familiar today: such as boundary marks painted around cashpoints to instil an implied privacy zone and prevent “shoulder surfing”.
San Francisco, the birthplace of street skateboarding, was also the first city to design solutions such as “pig’s ears” – metal flanges added to the corner edges of pavements and low walls to deter skateboarders. These periodic bumps along the edge create a barrier that would send a skateboarder tumbling if they tried to jump and slide along.
Indeed, one of the main criticisms of such design is that it aims to exclude already marginalised populations such as youths or the homeless. Unpleasant design, Savic says, “is there to make things pleasant, but for a very particular audience. So in the general case, it’s pleasant for families, but not pleasant for junkies.”
Preventing rough sleeping is a recurring theme. Any space that someone might lie down in, or even sit too long, is likely to see spikes, railings, stones or bollards added. In the Canadian city of Calgary, authorities covered the ground beneath the Louise Bridge with thousands of bowling ball-sized rocks. This unusual landscaping feature wasn’t for the aesthetic benefit of pedestrians walking along the nearby path, but part of a plan to displace the homeless population that took shelter under the bridge.
So next time you’re walking down the street, take a closer look at that bench or bus shelter. It may be trying to change the way you behave.

Ive seen a lot of these, but none with any commentary about how this makes public areas unwelcome for homed people as well.
Disabled, elderly, chronically ill, children….all of these groups often need to sit or rest while navigating public spaces, in order to do so safely. Removing benches, stable sitting areas and places to rest a weary body does no benefit to society, and significant harm to vulnerable (already marginalized) community members
Why don’t we just install iron bars, electrified guard rails, and cops w/riot gear in public places as well? That’ll certainly change the way people behave.

A study suggests that dinosaurs were not cold-blooded or warm-blooded, but something in between. via nature:
The work stakes out a rare middle ground in the long-running debate over whether dinosaurs were ‘cold-blooded’ ectotherms, which use the environment to adjust their internal temperature, or ‘warm-blooded’ endotherms, which regulate their body temperature from within. “There’s a third way,” says John Grady, a biologist at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
Today, that middle ground is occupied by animals including tuna, lamnid sharks and leatherback turtles. Studying how those creatures control their body heat might help to reveal how dinosaurs did it millions of years ago, Grady says. Mesotherms burn energy from within to regulate their body heat, but not to a constant temperature as a mammal or bird would do. Tuna, for instance, stay up to 20 °C warmer than the surrounding water, except when they dive deep into colder waters, when their metabolic rate can also plunge.
To work out where in the metabolic spectrum dinosaurs lay, Grady and his colleagues compiled a database of growth rates in 381 animal species, including 21 dinosaurs. The analysis, published today in Science1, took data from earlier studies that estimated growth rates in a number of ways. For dinosaurs, that included techniques such as counting the number of growth rings in fossilized bone, to estimate an individual’s age, and measuring the length of its bones, to estimate total mass. The animals ranged from slow-growing crocodiles to fast-growing horses.
The team then compared how fast each animal grows with how much energy it burns and found that mammals, which grew ten times faster than reptiles, also had metabolic rates that were ten times faster. The researchers used that information to infer the metabolic rates of dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs ended up mid-way along the scale, in a state that Grady’s team dubbed mesothermy.

Handmade Swords - The Watchman Son’s Sword
The Watchman Son’s Sword is a Fantasy/Gothic piece with some historical inspiration taken from a few different 15th-16th century German Oakeshott Type XVa longswords.
The goal in the finishing work with its textures, materials, and decoration being an exploration in late Medieval ornamentation styles.
The blade is forged and ground from high carbon 1075 steel, lightly antique “blued” and hand surface engraved. The fittings are forge blackened steel, and the grip and scabbard is highly antiqued cherry wood.

Cover the front of the screen with aluminum foil, and use the ground from the wall. I've done some HV stuff that way! Used to have a Franklin's Bell sitting on top of my old console TV in high school.
Finally somebody has found a good use for all those old CRT computer monitors finding their way to the landfills. [Steven Dufresne] from Rimstar.org steps us through a very simple conversion of a CRT computer monitor into a high-voltage power supply. Sure you can make a few small sparks but this conversion is also useful for many science projects. [Steve] uses the monitor power supply to demonstrate powering an ionocraft in his video, a classic science experiment using high voltage.
The conversion is just as simple as you would think. You need to safely discharge the TV tube, cut the cup off the high voltage anode cable and reroute it to a mounting bracket outside the monitor. The system needs to be earth grounded so [Steve] connects up a couple of ground cables. One ground cable for the project and one for a safety discharge rod. It’s really that simple and once wired up to a science project you have 25kV volts at your disposal by simply turning on the monitor. You don’t want to produce a lot of large sparks with this conversion because it will destroy the parts inside the monitor. The 240K Ohm 2 watt resistor [Steve] added will help keep those discharges to a minimum and protect the monitor from being destroyed.
Yes this is dangerous but when you’re working with high-voltage science experiments danger is something you deal with correctly. This isn’t the safest way to get high-voltage but if you have to hack something together for a project this will get you there and [Steve] is quite cautious including warning people of the dangers and how to safely discharge your experiment and the power supply after every use. This isn’t the first high-voltage power supply that [Steve] has constructed; we featured his home-built 30kV power supply in the past, which is a more conventional way to build a HV power supply using a doubler or tripler circuit.
