BvS’s 3 Biggest WTF Moments Explained

by Scott Collura

Whether you loved or hated or were “eh” about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, I think we can all agree that the film is chockfull of Easter eggs that set up a larger DC movie universe (officially called the DC Extended Universe). We’ll have a full report on the most noteworthy Easter eggs soon, but for now let’s take a look at some of the crazier and most WTF moments that even diehard comics fans might be trying to figure out.

Obviously, major spoilers follow for Batman v Superman…

When Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne takes a catnap at his computer in the Batcave, he has a couple of intense dreams -- or perhaps visions is a more accurate way to describe them. (This sequence has also been referred to as a “Knightmare,” at least on the toy and merchandising side of BvS.) First up, he finds himself in a hellish, post-apocalyptic landscape where a giant Omega symbol has been burned into the ground. This is the coat-and-goggles version of Batman glimpsed in the trailers for the film. He’s overrun by Nazi-like Stormtroopers (bearing Superman’s “S” symbol on their arms) and what certainly appear to be Parademons -- the flying, alien foot soldiers who serve the cosmic villain from the comics known as Darkseid. Yes, aside from representing Bruce’s fear of Superman taking over the world, this sequence also hints at that character, who is sort of like the Thanos of the DC Universe. Director Zack Snyder certainly seems to be setting up Darkseid, who is one of the New Gods, as the big bad of the upcoming Justice League movies, or the DCEU as a whole.

When asked if she would have time to make such a commitment alongside filming Star Wars Episode VIII, she said, "absolutely, I'm trying to fill up my calendar."

Video Premiere: BABYMETAL's 'Karate'

The official music video for "Karate", a brand new song from the Japanese teenage girl pop metal band BABYMETAL, can be seen below (courtesy of the official BABYMETAL YouTube channel). The track is taken from the group's second album, "Metal Resistance", which will be released on April 1 via RAL/Sony Music Entertainment in the U.S. and earMUSIC in Europe. Named after the ancient Japanese martial art, "Karate" is themed on fighting on in the face of adversity and difficult situations, pushing on through hard times and never giving up no matter how hard it might seem. The accompanying video encapsulates this perfectly, with Su-Metal, Yuimetal and Moametal facing off against some mysterious masked and robed foes, who show them that the only people who could ever stop them are the girls themselves. "Karate" was first heard at last year's Yokohama Arena shows and sees the girls singing "Seiya, soiya," accompanied by a karate-style choreography. Pre-orders of "Metal Resistance", with "Karate" as an instant grat track, are available on iTunes. "Metal Resistance" features songs that have already been performed live, as well as many never-been-heard-before new songs. Following their previous album, "Metal Resistance" features both songs performed as solo songs, and as a group. "Amore -Aoboshi-" and "No Rain, No Rainbow" is performed by Suzuka Nakamoto (a.k.a. Su-Metal), and "GJ!" and "Sis. Anger" are performed by Yui Mizuno (a.k.a. Yuimetal) and Moa Kikuchi (a.k.a. Moametal). The U.K. version of "Metal Resistance" also sees the girls' first full-English song "The One", which had also been performed for the first time last year at Yokohama Arena. BABYMETAL will kick off the 2016 world tour with a headline show at the world-famous Wembley Arena, U.K. on Saturday, April 2, making history by becoming the first Japanese artist to headline the legendary venue. The track listing for each "Metal Resistance" format is as follows: CD and limited box set including CD + exclusive T-shirt: 01. Road Of Resistance 02. Karate 03. Awadama Fever 04. YAVA! 05. Amore 06. Meta Taro 07. From Dusk Till Dawn 08. GJ! 09. Sis. Anger 10. No Rain, No Rainbow 11. Tales Of The Destinies 12. The One (English version) 2LP: Side 1 01. Road Of Resistance 02. Karate 03. Awadama Fever Side 2 01. Yava! 02. Amore 03. Meta Taro Side 3 01. From Dusk Till Dawn 02. GJ! 03. Sis. Anger Side 4 01. No Rain, No Rainbow 02. Tales Of The Destinies 03. The One (English version) Of the new album, BABYMETAL mastermind Kobametal stated: "As prophesied by the Fox God, a new album will be released on April 1st, 2016, also known as the Fox Day. "Since the release of BABYMETAL's debut album in 2014, we have been racing across the globe non-stop on our world tour. Through the last tour, I have come across people from all over the world and have had the chance to feel that miraculous moment when everyone came together via BABYMETAL. "Our new song 'The One' contains lyrics that speak of uniting the world, or a crowd favorite at concerts, 'Road Of Resistance', that never fails to bring our fans together. Every BABYMETAL song makes up this extraordinary story. "I continue to believe that the songs of BABYMETAL continue to push them forward to discover new possibilities. "All I can say right now is for all of you to wait patiently for the coming of the Fox Day." Established in 2010, BABYMETAL is the offshoot of the Japanese pop idol group SAKURA GAKUIN that performs a distinctly Japanese mix of schoolgirl J-pop and heavy metal. BABYMETAL's members admit that they had never listened to metal before joining the group. The girls wear gothy schoolgirl costumes, do choreographed dance routines and bang their heads violently. Many heavy metal fans have been reluctant to embrace BABYMETAL — which also includes producer Kobametal and a backing band of corpse-painted virtuosos — with some Internet forums calling them "the definition of a gimmick", "awful" and "metal for hipsters."

Can the Blockchain Kill Uber? Free State Project Participant Launches "Arcade City"

by Brian Doherty

Christopher David was running afoul of local and state regulations regarding driving for hire using smartphone apps in New Hampshire, as I reported here.

He's decided to use Ethereum (Jim Epstein hipped you to that fascinating use of blockchain tech last year) to create a genuinely peer-to-peer means for drivers and passengers to find each other without a top-down company making rules and skimming huge percentages, which he's calling "Arcade City."

I reported on Arcade City's debut in the context of getting drunks home safe on New Year's Eve for a donation, something the city of Portsmouth, N.H., didn't love.

A detailed interview with David appears today at Cointelegraph. Excerpts and summation:

On "why use Ethereum"?

David: .....the vision of Ethereum aligns precisely with our own vision of peer-to-peer transportation and distributed logistics. Any problems that we'll need to solve to implement our decentralized business model -- like identity, reputation, payments, cryptoequity -- we know there will be brilliant minds working to solve the same issues....

....By beginning with a conventional ‘minimum viable product’ in the Android and Apple app stores earlier this month, we’ve been able to build a userbase willing to test new features and provide feedback. We are beginning immediately to build components of our ridesharing model in Ethereum, starting with identity and reputation systems. Our first goal is to deliver a working proof of concept of an Ethereum-based reputation system by the end of April. The many rules that govern reputation for rides will be encoded as smart contracts, editable by consensus. If in testing our drivers agree that too many driver reputation points are being lost after negative reviews by first-time riders, the relevant smart contract can be modified....

David believes that the things they learn and techniques they develop with Arcade City will have use beyond their own ride-share model.

What drivers should love about Arcade City vs. centralized Uber model:

David: Every day drivers for Uber and Lyft need to worry about decreased rates set centrally at headquarters in San Francisco, or the next enforcement action by a centralized government interjecting itself into peer-to-peer transactions. In that light, the appeal of decentralization is clear. If Ethereum remains the best way to decentralize power into the hands of the drivers and facilitate sustainable peer-to-peer transactions, then drivers will be happy to use it.

What are some of the more "real world" issues outside blockchain tech Arcade City has to cope with?

David: ....necessary capital needed to extend rideshare insurance coverage to our drivers: our primary obstacle to growth. Raising that capital would be relatively easy for a straightforward Uber clone that just happened to be friendlier to drivers, assuming that company planned to go down the standard VC track toward a sale or IPO. We don’t want to do that. We want to build an asset for the community, an open platform for distributed logistics that any driver, entrepreneur or startup can plug into and have immediate access to all that we’ve built. Eventually Arcade City won’t be managed by any company or our founding team; it will be essentially a public utility maintained by the community....

Compared to the problems and costs of driver acquisition that the big venture capital-funded Uber and Lyft face, David insists:

our cost per driver acquisition so far: $0. We’re turning people away because we can’t handle all the volume. How will Uber and Lyft sustain their revenue models when the lean and mean Arcade City swarm attracts away all their drivers?

Issues not addressed in the article very deeply: will this model pass legal muster in all the cities with all their regulations about for-hire driving? How will the decentralized "driver decides" payment system evade any such regs? And how well is it working so far?

A press release yesterday from Arcade City says:

Drivers have given more than 1,000 rides to customers in 100+ cities across 27 states, and Australia.....Arcade City quickly signed up more than 3,000 drivers, most of them current or former drivers for the 'big two' ride-sharers.

.....Approximately half of current drivers give rides on a 'pay what you think is fair' basis.

....Arcade City will use Ethereum to issue 'crypto-equity' to drivers, allowing them to own up to 100% of the company by 2020.

Arcade City drivers have so far given rides in 27 states and counting: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington state, and Washington, D.C....

Before David was really trying to change the world, he tried running for Congress in California, which I interviewed him about. I met David while researching my book Ron Paul's Revolution back in 2011.

Here's what it was like to send an email back in 1984

by Steven Tweedie

It can be easy to take things like modern email for granted, and nothing highlights that more than this clip from "Database," an old tech show that aired in the 80s.

In the segment above, you can see what sending and receiving an email was like in 1984, back when you were greeted with prompts like "phone computer" and literally had to dial in using a rotary phone. These were the days when webpages were numbered and email was such a luxury that people would excitedly sign off on messages with phrases like "electronically yours."

The network shown here is Micronet, an internet portal that Gizmodo points out was a lot like an early version of AOL. Micronet featured online games, a magazine, rudimentary message boards, news, downloadable software, and yes, even email.

The video makes one thing very clear: A lot can change in 30 years.

IRON MAIDEN's Plane 'Badly Damaged' In Collision At Santiago Airport

IRON MAIDEN's branded private tour plane was badly damaged in a runway accident at a Chile airport Saturday morning (March 12). The band, which is in the middle of the South American leg of its world tour, revealed that none of its members and equipment were on board at the time, and later said it was in the process of making contingency plans to get to their show in Cordoba, Argentina, with band, crew and equipment intact. The incident occurred when Ed Force One was tethered to a tow truck at Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport just outside Santiago, to be taken for refueling prior to flying over the Andes to Cordoba. On moving, the steering pin that is part of the mechanism that connects the ground tug to the aircraft seemingly fell out. As a result, the aircraft had no steering and collided with the ground tug, badly damaging the undercarriage, two of the plane's engines and injuring two ground tug operators, both of whom have been taken to hospital. The band, which performed at Santiago's Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos Friday night (March 11), said in a statement: "The flight engineers are on site and evaluating the damage, but their initial report is that the engines have suffered large damage and will require an extended period of maintenance and possibly two new engines. "We are currently making contingency arrangements to get to the show in Cordoba tomorrow with band, crew and equipment intact. Fortunately the 20 tons of equipment had not been loaded onto Ed Force One at the time of the accident. "Although this is tragic for our beautiful plane, we do not expect this to affect our concert schedule including the next two shows in Cordoba and Buenos Aires. And we hope to find a new Ed Force One to continue this adventure with us in the near future. "To finish on a high note, however, our visit to Chile was a huge success with 58,000 fans coming to the show as totally brilliant as ever in the Stadium Nacional last night. We love you guys!" A couple of photos of the damage can be seen below. An investigation into the incident has been launched by Chile's Departamento Prevención de Accidentes. The Boeing 747 jumbo is named Ed Force One after the band's mascot, Eddie, who has appeared on all of their album covers, and graces the plane's tail. Ed Force One is being piloted on the band's world tour by MAIDEN frontman Bruce Dickinson. IRON MAIDEN's world tour, in support of the band's latest album, "The Book Of Souls", kicked off on February 24 in Sunrise, Florida (a suburb of Fort Lauderdale). Support on the trek is coming from THE RAVEN AGE, the band led by IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris's son George Harris. MAIDEN's sixteenth — and first-ever double — studio album, "The Book Of Souls", was released worldwide on September 4, 2015 through Parlophone Records (BMG in the U.S.A). The CD was recorded in Paris, France with producer Kevin "Caveman" Shirley in late 2014, with the finishing touches added last year. IRON MAIDEN announced in May 2015 that touring plans to support the album wouldn't happen until this year to allow Dickinson time to fully recuperate after his successful cancer treatment.

Murals of Faceless Figures by Seth Appear to Witness the Unseen

by Christopher Jobson

seth-1

French muralist Julien Malland (aka Seth) has been extremely prolific over the last year, traveling to far flung locations around the world including China, Tahiti, New Zealand, Italy, Canada, and even the Reunion Islands in just the last few months alone. Seth paints large-scale human figures—mostly children—that appear faceless, cut off by the edges of buildings or turned completely away from the viewer, as if looking out into the world or witnessing something we cannot see. From his artist statement:

Since 2003, [Malland] ventured across the world to exchange with street artists from different cultures, in order to broaden his horizon on life and on mural painting. From this experience he has been compelled to draw simple characters, mostly children, somehow connected to the chaotic environment in which they are revealed. Witnessing the outcome of globalization, its creations are celebrating traditions. Thus they are defining a hybrid culture between modern expression and traditional representation. His approach aims to arouse an artistic dialogue, whether it is a collaboration with local urban artists or a learning process of traditional techniques from local craftsmen.

Seth recently launched a new website sharing many new pieces and a handful of behind-the-scenes videos. You can follow him on both Instagram and Facebook.

New Nuclear Engine Takes 6 Weeks To Get To Mars

by Alanah Pearce
Roumen.ganeff

Interesting

Russian company Rosatom has developed a nuclear power propulsion system that could get a spacecraft to Mars in just over a month. The trip currently takes 18 months.

Not only would the new technology make the trip faster, but it would also allow a spacecraft to maneuver throughout the flight. Current engines only allow for a defined trajectory flight, but they also don't have the capacity to return from Mars.

Traditional rocket engines are actually believed to have reached the limit of their potential, but the proposed nuclear drive could be used for both close-range expeditions - like to the moon - and also for deep-space missions.

The nuclear engine project began in 2010 and an engineering design had been created by 2012. The budget is around $274 million, and prototype testing is expected to begin in 2018.

Google Docs adds new option to export text files as ePub

Yesterday, Google added functionality to Google Docs to export long text documents as ePub files, largely compatible with almost every electronic reader and book reading app imaginable (except on Amazon Kindles as they have their own book format .mobi). Reading long PDFs or word files on tablets or smartphones brings me back to my college days, it was the most annoying thing to do on a screen which the text was not formatted for, constantly having to pan, zoom, pan, zoom, pan, zoom, just to read small text that spans three times the size of the screen. This feature should make the consumption of some of these types of files much more enjoyable to readers of such content. Perhaps it will facilitate the actual conversion of ePub files from copied text. The update is rolling out now and should be complete in a couple of days. To export as an ePub file, you can go to File > Download As > EPUB Publication (.epub). Source |...
