Lara Jo Regan, the Los Angeles based photographer behind early internet sensation “Mr. Winkle“, has now turned to capturing the infectious delight and excitement of dogs looking out car of windows, some with with their fur (and tongues) blowing in the wind. This adorable photo series is simply titled “Dogs in Cars“.
I usually try to come up with ideas that are somewhat odd and complex to insure no one else is doing the same thing. But as an owner of three dogs living in the Los Angeles car culture, the idea was just staring me in the face. Most dogs become downright delirious over a car ride, and I wanted to capture this amazing primal energy in photographs beyond what I’d seen before”
Thirteen of the photos are featured in their Official Dogs in Cars Calendar 2014, with more photos being released as part of an upcoming book series.

Kung Fury is an upcoming 80s-style action comedy film by writer and director David Sandberg (a.k.a. “Laser Unicorns“). It’s about a kung fu cop who travels back in time to take on Hitler. David is currently raising funds for the project on Kickstarter to help with post-production.
The movie features: arcade-robots, dinosaurs, nazis, vikings, norse gods, mutants and a super kung fu-cop called Kung Fury, all wrapped up in an 80s style action packed adventure.
During an unfortunate series of events a friend of Kung Fury is assasinated by the most dangerous kung fu master criminal of all time; Adolf Hitler, a.k.a Kung Führer. Kung Fury decides to travel back in time, to Nazi Germany, in order to kill Hitler and end the Nazi empire once and for all. Kung Fury is a visually spectacular action comedy that has it’s foundation in 80s cop movies.
Here is the official trailer for Kung Fury:

2013′s given us all it has to offer at this point, but 2014 is just around the corner with a whole new slate of promising films. The movies I’m most looking forward to are all over the map, running the gamut from provocative arthouse flicks to big-budget superhero movies. After the jump, check out the ten titles that have me giddy with anticipation for the next twelve months.
Honorable mentions: There are approximately five thousand YA adaptations due out in 2014, but three I’m particularly excited for are The Giver, The Fault in Our Stars, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1; Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Inherent Vice looks like a rip-roaring good time; David Fincher and Ben Affleck seem like the perfect combination to bring Gillian Flynn‘s cold, twisted Gone Girl to life; and I am really eager to see Steve Carell unleash his killer side in Foxcatcher.
10. Nymphomaniac
Yes, the two-part film’s been getting a lot of attention for its explicit, numerous sex scenes. But reviews from Europe (where it has already opened) suggest it has a formidable brain to go with all that writhing flesh. Sexuality is not a topic that mainstream pictures typically handle all that well, so it should be interesting to hear what a (in)famous provocateur unconcerned by propriety or MPAA standards has to say about it. (March 21 and April 18)
9. Noah
The story of Noah and his ark is so familiar to most Americans, it’s easy to forget how insane the story really is. But if anyone can be counted upon to bring the fable’s darker themes to the forefront, it’s Darren Aronofsky. The Biblical hero (played by Russell Crowe) should fit right into Aronofsky’s lineup of protagonists consumed by their obsessions, and his crazy tale should provide plenty of opportunities for Aronofsky to put his knack for striking visuals to good use. (March 28)
8. Jupiter Ascending
Truthfully, the premise of Jupiter Ascending — an interplanetary warrior tries to save a princess in peril — doesn’t sound all that exciting to me. But the Wachowskis are so ambitiously, irrepressibly creative that a success has the potential to be groundbreaking, and even a failure is bound to be more interesting than most of the generic sci-fi actioners churned out each year. (July 18)
7. Guardians of the Galaxy
It’s not to the extent that you’d ever mistake a Captain America sequel for a Thor sequel, but the Marvel pictures do have an enforced sameness about them. So it’s great to see the franchise taking a new direction with Guardians of the Galaxy, which — if that Comic-Con reel and that Thor: The Dark World credits sequence are any indication — looks hilarious, bizarre, and above all, refreshingly original. Not to mention the fact that it’s about time someone tried to make Chris Pratt a big, big star. (August 1)
6. The Boxtrolls
Laika’s previous features Coraline and ParaNorman stood out in the crowded animation field — not just because they were stop-motion pictures at a time when glossy CGI is the norm, but also because they were unusually smart and heartfelt. We haven’t seen much of The Boxtrolls yet, but the small glimpses we’ve had so far suggest it’ll be cut from the same lovely, handmade cloth. (September 26)
5. Veronica Mars
I was not a huge fan of the newer Futurama episodes. I didn’t love the new Arrested Development season. I’m the rare Friday Night Lights fan who was rooting against a movie sequel. Put simply, I am not the kind of TV viewer who wants endless sequels, reunions, and revivals. And yet… I adored Veronica Mars, and anywhere she is, I know I’m going to be too. Especially if Logan, Mac, Wallace, Weevil, and Keith are going to be there as well. (Fine, you come too, Piz.) Even as I prepare myself for the worst, I can’t help but hope for the best. (March 14)
4. The Lego Movie
With Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Phil Lord and Chris Miller adapted a slim kids’ book into a meaty, satisfying adventure. With 21 Jump Street, they turned a remake no one asked for into the best studio comedy of 2012. I fully expect that with The Lego Movie, they’ll make something entertaining and original out of what could’ve been a lazy cash grab. Especially since they’ve collected a cast of stars — including Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Arnett – who should fit right into their upbeat, zany vibe. Plus, have you seen those trailers? (February 7)
3. X-Men: Days of Future Past
If you asked me which major superhero movie I thought would be the best of 2014, I’d probably pick one of the Marvel Studios titles. But this is a list of the films I’m most looking forward to, and my heart has always been with Professor X and his BFF (Best Frenemy Forever) Magneto. Sure, X-Men 3: The Last Stand was a disappointing close to a wonderful trilogy, and X-Men: First Class never quite made the most of its fantastic cast. But the combination of Bryan Singer, the original stars, and the First Class actors promises to be a must-see for X-fans everywhere. (May 23)
2. Snowpiercer
If there’s a silver lining to Bong Joon-ho‘s ongoing battle with The Weinstein Company over Snowpiercer‘s U.S. edit, it’s that the controversy has highlighted just how much great press Bong’s original cut is getting. Early reviews indicate that Bong’s first English-language effort is every bit the equal of his earlier Korean-language works: smart, gorgeous, thrilling, and dark, dark, dark. (Release TBD)
1. Boyhood
With the Celine and Jesse trilogy, Richard Linklater observed a romance unfolding in real time. Boyhood (or whatever it winds up being called) takes that approach to the next level by showing an actual kid grow up over the course of the movie. The film began shooting with child actor Ellar Salmon in 2002, and according to both Linklater and star Ethan Hawke, is due out sometime in 2014. That crazy idea might work or it might not, but either way it ought to be worth checking out.
And besides, Linklater’s Before Midnight topped both my most-anticipated list in 2012 and my favorites list in 2013. I’d be crazy to bet against him in 2014. (Release TBD)

Think of your favorite crazy, low-budget off the wall genre movie. Imagine that as “normal,” and maybe you can understand the madness that is Kung Fury.
Directed by David Sandberg, it’s the story of a renegade kung-fu cop who travels back in time to kill Adolf Hitler. I know what you’re thinking: “Been there done that.” But not like in Kung Fury. Shot in a style similar to what Robert Rodriguez did with Sin City, the film takes that wacky premise and adds dinosaurs, vikings, gods, robots, and video games, rolls them up, and uses them to beat logic to death. It’s kind of the ultimate Fantastic Fest movie and now you can check out the first trailer.
Would you like to see more? Get in line. It sounds like Sandberg – who quit his job and invested everything to make this film – has run out of funds. Which is where Kickstarter comes in. They’re currently looking for supporters to help complete this insane looking movie. You can learn more about it here.
Here’s also an excerpt from the press release explaining the making of the film and more:
Even tough the film takes place in 1980s Miami, the whole film has been shot in Sweden and Norway. David Sandberg started this project over a year ago. Driven by a strong will, love for the 80s and action movies to create a unique movie. He took $5000 of his own money that he put it into the project and started shooting whenever he and his friends had time. This has taken him to a finished trailer and enough material to create a 30 minute long film that he hopes to expand into a full feature film.
Kung Fury takes place in a variety of exotic locations; 1980s Miami, Asgard and Germany in the 1940s, to name a few. With a limited budget to work with and the fact that most of the film was shot in Umeå, Sweden, most of the scenes were shot against a greenscreen backdrop. Which meant that all the environments had to be recreated digitally. The advantage of shooting on greenscreen is that it doesn’t require expensive sets or locations to shoot, it is very simple and only requires a small crew, which helped a lot in keeping the costs down. However, once you’re done shooting a movie like this, there’s a massive postproduction phase that requires a lot of time and effort by talented visual effects artists.
At the start of this project, David did all of the visual effects himself. As the project has grown he’s been getting some help from friends at times and also an intern who’s been working closely with David for the past 3 months. This film was shot entirely on the Canon 5d, with the exception of the slow-mo scenes which were shot with the Sony FS700.
David has now teamed up with Academy Award nominated producer Mathias Fjellström who share Davids’ love for the 80s’. A kickstarter campaign was recently launched for the movie. If successful, the 30 minute film will be released for free online in 6 months.
Also, Sandberg provided us with a bunch of behind the scenes photos from the film. Check them out below.

Jon Stewart and the rest of the team at The Daily Show gave John Oliver a hilarious and heartwarming send-off last night, which was Oliver’s final day on the show before leaving to host his own topical comedy program on HBO. Stewart brought him out under the guise of doing a segment, but then launched into a retrospective about Oliver’s seven years on The Daily Show.
