Air Bonsai: Levitating Magnetic Bonsai Trees by Hoshinchu
Despite the visual beauty and life-giving nature of plants, there’s always been one main problem with our vegetative friends: plants can’t fly. A small company called Hoshinchu based out of Kyushu, Japan, recently set out to fix the problem that evolution forgot by inventing the Air Bonsai, a system for magnetically levitating small bonsai trees several inches above a small electrified pedestal. The system allows you to create your own miniature Avatar-like worlds with tiny trees or shrubs planted in balls of moss, but is also powerful enough to suspend special ceramic dishes of fragments of lava rock.
Air Bonsai is currently funding like crazy on Kickstarter and is availble in a number of configurations starting with a base DIY kit for $200 that requires you to use your own plants up to more elaborate designs that may only ship in Japan. (via Spoon & Tamago)

Istanbul Inception: Warped Turkish Cityscapes by Aydin Büyüktas
Turkish photographer and digital artist Aydın Büyüktaş turns the streets of Istanbul upside down in these warped cityscapes that appear to curve infinitely upward and outward toward the skies. While it’s tempting to draw parallels with stunning visuals from the 2010 movie Inception, the artist says his true inspiration is taken from the 1884 satirical novella Flatland that depicts a two-dimensional world occupied by geometric figures. In this series, also titled Flatland, Büyüktaş photographed canals, bazaars, skate parks, and bridges with the aid of a drone and then digitally stitched them together as dramatically inverted spaces without a visible horizon. You can see more of his gravity-defying work on Instagram. All images courtesy the artist. (via Designboom)

grip, ungrip, grip
we’ve shared a stick shift miata for 6 years, and we hold hands in the car. so this leads to a certain amount of learned responses.
red light, grip hands; green light, ungrip. reach 2nd gear, grip for 10 seconds, ungrip to switch to third.
reach third gear - grip, maintain that on city streets for a minute, on freeways for nearly no time at all.
ungrip.
fourth gear grip, ungrip soon on freeways til 5th, otherwise hold hands until a red light on streets.
our next car will be an automatic, all grips.
but we’ll be keeping the miata for either to drive, sometimes together. the pulse might not be daily, but the habit will be there, until years after one or the other of us is not having to shift…. at the last minute…. ungrip.

head towards joy
after all this back and forth and hemming and hawing, and months of debating about our 2nd car, it appears that we may very well end up getting… another miata.
we test drove three totally reasonable mazda sedans. we went around in circles and we made pro and con lists to figure which to choose. we’ve gone back and forth and back again.
and then somewhere while deconstructing the argument over our post-test-drive snacks this afternoon, i said, “i want to be as happy as i was when i sat in the miata.”
see, we’d tested the 6, 3 and CX3 mazdas. then, before we left the dealership i said “i want to see what they did to the miata.”
i’ve had zazu, my miata, for 12 and a half years. i love my car. like, more than one should reasonably love an object. he’s been great and i’m attached.
i sat in the 2016 version of my car and started - i kid you not - squealing like a 14-year old. i ohh’d and aww’d and kept making little excited sounds at all the improvements and new doo-dads. i was in heaven.
thing is, we’re trying to be practical about this purchase. a sedan as a second car would give us more flexibility, an automatic is good for holding hands, and we agreed we should be able to carry more than 2 people. all roads lead to sedan.
but there was no joy. at the end of the day, after trying all the sedans out, it was all compromise and “ok, sure, fine”.
but no. no.
i want to feel the way i did when i sat in the miata.
i want joy. i want impractical, foolhardy joy.
so it looks like we may be buying another miata. zazu 2.
zazu is hebrew for “movement”.
and i believe we’re finally moving in the right direction.
head towards joy.

we watched ‘galaxy quest’ again tonight, partly because of alan rickman and partly because it’s just such a fun film.
