A Deaf Linguist Explores Black American Sign Language:

Well this is a fascinating read.

Many hearing people think sign language is universal, but it is not. Hill, who was born deaf, studied in Italy on a Fulbright and speaks Italian, as well as ASL, Italian SL, and Black ASL.

American Sign Language developed based on the French sign language that Thomas Gallaudet learned from Clerc, so American and French signers understand one another better than British and American signers do, for example.

Hill produced a chart that showed how the schools spread across the country. But the first school for black deaf children in the South… didn’t open until 1867, in North Carolina. Southern schools remained segregated until well after Brown v. Board of Education, in 1954… So it is not surprising that deaf African-Americans developed and were taught their own version of ASL.

Los Angeles-based writer and director Chris Capel of HandleBarMustacheLand has created “juggaLOVE,” a hilarious fake online dating site ad for fans of the hip hop duo Insane Clown Posse (a.k.a. “Juggalos“). It features clown-faced couples whose relationships are based on their mutual love of stomping people and snorting bath salts in the middle of food courts.

Insane Clown Posse fans rejoice! Finally, a dating site that cares about the diverse needs and desires of today’s modern Juggalo.

As a way to temporarily break free from a routine of personal and commercial projects, photographer Romain Laurent (previously) challenged himself to create a looped animated portrait each week since last September. He says the bizarre and often laugh-out-loud experiments are a low-pressure way to experiment and be creative without expectations. “As far as the intention of the series, it’s a way for me to explore a hybrid medium, experiment and being spontaneous while still sticking to a short weekly deadline. There isn’t a common concept between each loop, I just ‘go with the flow’ and see what comes to my mind each week.” You can see many more loops from the series over on his Tumblr. (via Lustik)

In the last two years, millions of tourists have visited Harbin, China, during the winter to appreciate what sculptors build for the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival. And from the photos shared on Flickr, it’s apparent why. With LED lights and ice blocks from the Songhua River, festival sculptors spent weeks to ambitiously replicate the Hallgrimskirkja church, Iceland’s architectural monument, and craft many more works to entertain this season’s visitors.
