Wonderful Ambient GIF Animations

A Photographer’s Digital Journey to Produce a Lake of Shattered Mirrors

“Impact” by Erik Johansson, image provided by artist.
Swedish photographer Erik Johansson had a vision for a digital photograph of a lake shattering like a mirror, an image he wanted to produce as accurately as possible. To achieve this effect for Impact, Johansson bought 17 square meters of mirrors, found a boat and a model, and posed all three in a stone pit until he got the best shot for the final image. Several months of planning, shooting, and editing later and he has an entire video that documents the tasks that lie far beyond the many hours he spent in Photoshop.
For this personal project Johansson shot on a Hasselblad H5D-40, edited on a Eizo CG318-4k monitor with Adobe Photoshop, and filmed the entire process with a 4k GoPro. You can see more of Johansson’s behind-the-scenes videos and finished images on his Instagram and Youtube channel. (via Colossal Submissions)
Rafael Araujo’s Architectural Renderings of Life Now as a Coloring Book

Architect and illustrator Rafael Araujo (previously) drafts beautiful three-dimensional spaces in a studio without technology, connecting himself back to nature while he meticulously demonstrates the Golden Ratio’s role in the natural world. In an attempt to pass on this meditative quality about his process and work, Araujo is creating the Golden Ratio Coloring Book. This book is currently on Kickstarter along with video documentation of Araujo’s process, which he has been fine-tuning for the last 40 years.
“I was 15 when I started noticing intelligent patterns in the world of nature—spirals, sequences, proportions,” said Araujo. “This secret of nature’s beautiful designs unfolded before my very eyes. Everything I draw is by hand. I don’t use a computer, just a pencil, compass, and a protractor.”
Araujo’s prints are also available in the Colossal Shop.

long day longer
me: *gets in the 15 item express line with 6 items behind guy with 17 items*
him: *pulls cart back and gestures me forward*
me: no, that’s ok, i’m not in any rush.
him: me either. i realize i have 17 items, but the line wasn’t that busy when i got here.
me: well then, they’ll have to arrest you.
him: *smiles*
him: *gestures me forward again*
me: no really, i’m good.
him: i insist.
me: *smiles, shuffles forward*
him: besides, have to let a pretty lady through.
me: *stops just ahead of him, slowly turns head with look of irritated bewilderment that cannot be denied*
him: i mean, actually, a pretty lady without attitude.
me: *still looking at him, head tilting further, with furrowed brow and look of growing abhorrence*
him: um, i mean, you’re pretty, and you were nice to me.
me: *still staring, shaking head ever so slightly*
i was offended on so many levels that my mouth stopped working, and then i found i was standing in front of the checker, whom i did not want to ignore, so i just let it drop.
i was tired and just trying to buy some stuff to make dinner.
i was unprepared to say all the things that are now on my tongue.
every day. a thousand small things. a thousand small ways. every day.
we can never go out unarmed with what we need to say.
i hope i do better next time.
