Vases Constructed from Hundreds of Pencils by Studio Markunpoika
Amalgamated is a new series of vessels by studio markunpoika constructed from assembled pencils. Taking advantage of the pencil’s unique hexagon shape, the pencils are first tightly glued together at each facet to form a solid block. The final pieces are then carved on a machine lathe to reveal the insides of each pencil. Via studio markunpoika:
“Amalgamated” is a collection which explores the relationship of a mass produced ‘tool’ and its individual purpose. The beauty of the pencil as an object seems to go unnoticed if utilised only for their primary purpose. “Amalgamated” is a visual and tactile investigation by using pencils as a raw material. This holistic principle has been the fundament for creating this set of vases; let the pencils become a thing themselves.
The vessels are part of a collaboration between Gallery FUMI and Faber-Castell and were recently on view as part of Design Miami/Basel 2014. (via designboom)

Because it's Friday: Color inception
Take a look at this spinning disk. Do you see colors?
I see two colored regions: ochre bands about 1/3 and 2/3 of the way out, each surrounded by narrow olive bands. But this image is actually monochrome black and white: it's just a rotating version of this image:
This optical illusion is called Benham's top or Benham's disk, and no-one really knows why most people see colors. It's nothing to do with latency in RGB-displays: the effect works just as well as a physical device. The effect is dependent on the speed and rotation of the pattern: this Daily Mail article includes an interactive version that lets you control the speed and direction.
That's all for this week — we'll be back on Monday. Enjoy your weekend!
Unverpackt: Zero-Waste Grocery Store Packages No Products
The first of its kind in the country, this German supermarket strips away wasteful packaging and sells its goods in bulk to customers who bring or borrow recycled and reusable containers.
Set to open Berlin this summer, Original Unverpackt is to be the first of a series of stores using a sustainable model similar to co-ops but at a larger scale and aimed at mass market consumers.
Nothing here comes in a disposable box, bag, jar – nothing is shrink-wrapped or tetra-packed. Bulk and gravity bins dot the isles and hang from the walls. Even beverage stations use refillable bottles.
Keeping the experience minimal and easy, creators Sara Wolf and Milena Glimbovski are offering just one variety of each product type, reducing choice fatigue and focusing on quality and simplicity.
Having crowdfunded over 100,000 Euros to start things out, the supermarket is tackling a 16-million-ton waste problem (just in Germany) but ultimately aims to make a global impact as well, changing the way consumers think about shopping and sustainability.
