Here are some videos of Steam Machines in action

by Joshua Derocher

Thanks to the magic of YouTube, some of the people lucky enough to receive one of the 300 beta Steam Machines have been able to share their impressions of the system. The OS looks like exactly like Steam's Big Picture Mode, with the option to switch over to a Linux desktop. Most of the videos report the controller being very lightweight, but this is probably due to it being a prototype that was made on a 3D printer.

There are videos available of people playing Metro Last Light, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. The graphics look really good, and one thing I noticed that was interesting is that the graphics settings have been simplified in Metro to one slider for overall quality.

Disney Pulls a Reverse Santa, Takes Back Christmas Shows From Amazon Customers

by samzenpus
Sockatume writes "Since 2011, Amazon Instant Video has sold a series of Christmas shorts from Disney called 'Prep and Landing'. Unfortunately this holiday season, Disney has had a change of heart and has decided to make the shorts exclusive to its own channels. The company went so far as to retroactively withdrawn the shows from Amazon, so that customers who have already paid for them no longer have access. Apparently this reverse-Santa ability is a feature Amazon provides all publishers, and customers have little recourse but to go cap-in-hand to a Disney outlet and pay for the shows again."

Moments Lets You Quickly Build A Photo Book On Your iPad, Pick It Up At Walgreens When Complete

by Sarah Perez
moments

Looking for a last-minute holiday gift you can create on your iPad and pick up the same day? Moments.me (not to be confused with photo-sharing app Moment.me), is a newly launched photo book maker which lets you quickly build a customizable, hardcover-bound photo book using images from your social networks, iCloud or your Camera Roll. When you’re finished, the book can be picked up within just a few hours from a nearby Walgreens or Duane Reade.

The Tel Aviv-area company, started a year ago, was born out of the founders’ previous efforts in doing mobile development for hire, including time spent working with HP on the webOS project, as well as on client work for Dropico, Zappix, and others.

Explains co-founder Amit Sherman, the idea to do a photo book application was partially due to their experience in the mobile photo space, but also because of the challenges that still exist today with building a book – something they felt could be improved on a touch-based device like the iPad.

moments2

Moments, then, is designed to be simple to use to make the process less frustrating, and much faster. There is only one photo book product you can choose from currently, which is actually good because it narrows down your options from the beginning. As you build the book, adding text, a different background color, or a pre-templated layout is done via drag-and-drop. The options are tappable at the top of the screen and you just pull them down on to the page to customize.

Beneath the photo book editor’s interface are your photo sources: Facebook, Dropbox, or iPad (Camera Roll, Photo Stream, albums). From here, you drag-and-drop photos from an album into position on the photo book’s pages.

There’s not much more to it than that. When you’re done you checkout to complete your purchase, which you later pay for in-store at one of the 4,000 locations across the U.S. offering photo book printing. (Moments also won Walgreens API developer contest for this app, we’re told).

There were a couple of bugs with the current version of the app. For instance, when swapping out layouts after photos were already in place, the app crashed. The other issue was that the iPad albums are in the wrong order – instead of showing newest photos first, they show the oldest. However, Sherman says this is being corrected in the next app update which is currently in review with Apple. (This will include an iPhone version of Moments, too, he says.)

The iPhone app will be very similar to competitor Mosaic, in terms of its ability to automatically generate photo books for you after you first pick out a few photos you want to use. The bigger difference between the two is that Mosaic albums are shipped out to you, while Moments’ books can be picked up locally almost immediately.

SelectingPhotos

Moments is a team of five full-time employees, and one freelancer. The company has raised a small ($300K) round of seed funding from the Shaked family (owners of 888) and the Mafil company.

The app is a free download here on iTunes. Until Dec. 31, there’s a coupon for books printed which bring their cost down to $15.00 for the time being.

The Greatest Innovation in Oreo Dunking Since Milk

Oreo might be trying to push its snack-sized mini cookies with this utterly brilliant way to dunk, but there's no reason this hack can't work with full-sized Oreo cookies as well—or any reasonably-sized cookie, for that matter. You'll of course need access to a clean french press, but the other components—milk and cookies—should be easy to come by.

Facebook Tracks the Status Updates and Messages You Don't Write Too

by samzenpus
Jah-Wren Ryel writes "It turns out Facebook tracks the stuff that people type and then erase before hitting the post button. If you start writing a message, and then think better of it and decide not to post it, Facebook still adds it to the dossier they keep on you. From the article: 'Storing text as you type isn't uncommon on other websites. For example, if you use Gmail, your draft messages are automatically saved as you type them. Even if you close the browser without saving, you can usually find a (nearly) complete copy of the email you were typing in your Drafts folder. Facebook is using essentially the same technology here. The difference is that Google is saving your messages to help you. Facebook users don't expect their unposted thoughts to be collected, nor do they benefit from it.'"

Mount a Raspberry Pi-Powered Google Calendar On Your Wall

by Thorin Klosowski

Mount a Raspberry Pi-Powered Google Calendar On Your Wall

Calendars are great to have in your house, but the problem with most of them is that despite cute pictures of kittens or baby turtles, the calendars you can buy at those pop-up kiosks in the mall don't actually get updated with the events in your life. Instructables user Piney wanted a smarter wall calendar, so they built one with a Raspberry Pi and a LCD screen.

‘Rounders’ and ‘Shakespeare In Love’ Sequels Developing as Weinsteins Regain Control of Miramax Library

by Germain Lussier

Rounders

The once-independent Miramax catalog is getting a new school Hollywood makeover. Founders Harvey and Bob Weinstein, who left the company in 2005 and formed The Weinstein Company, just signed a deal to regain creative control over the Miramax library. Colony Capital purchased it from Disney in 2010, for $660 million. Their first two orders of business will be sequels to Best Picture winner Shakespeare in Love and cult poker film Rounders. They’ll also develop TV series based on Good Will Hunting, Swingers and Flirting with Disaster, and jumpstart development on scripts by Stephen Colbert, Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack. Read much more below.

Deadline broke the news of this major deal. It’s a twenty year deal that spans TV, films and stage productions. Quatar Holdings does the financing, the Weinstein Company handles development and Miramax distributes international distribution.

Here’s Harvey Weinstein on the Shakespeare In Love sequel:

I personally have never made a sequel, but I will make Shakespeare In Love as one. I’ve always wanted to do that and now we have the impetus to.

And on the Rounders sequel:

I’ve discussed making Rounders 2 with Matt Damon and I would say that’s going to be instantaneous. The guys [writers David Levien and Brian Koppelman] have a great idea, a way to make it more international where you start the card game in Paris, that’s all I want to say. There might be a certain beautiful Parisian actress involved in it, and then we’re off to the racetrack and Vegas with Matty and Edward Norton, and a new supervillain to replace John Malkovich.

Deadline reports they’re eyeing Robert De Niro for that new villain role.

As for those other scripts, the Colbert one is called The Alibi about a group that helps cheating spouses and The Ninth Life Of Louis Drax, which Minghella and Pollack were developing before their passing.

This is certainly a fluid story with more information sure to break in the coming days, weeks and months but the main take away is the Weinsteins now once again have creative control over the Miramax films they lost when they left the company. The sky is the limit, and since we know they’ve been looking to expand into television with original scripts and series based on other film properties, expect to see more development.

Eaby Finds Misspelled Items on Ebay for Cheaper Prices

Android: Believe it or not, one of the best ways to find great deals on Ebay is with auctions that have misspelled words. So a "Xbox Connect" instead of an "Xbox Kinect" might just go for a lot lesser since fewer people search for that. Eaby makes it easy to find such items on Android.

Unknown Worlds' next game is Subnautica

by Jordan Devore

The studio behind Natural Selection 2 has started talking about its next big project, Subnautica. Described as "an open world, underwater exploration and construction game," this wonderful-sounding game is very much in its early days. "Subnautica is not in 'alpha,' it is an idea that is just starting to be mouled into its first playable incarnations," writes the team.

Concept art and selections from the soundtrack are being shared, as are descriptions of what's sounding like a highly ambitious title. Players will be able to "design, construct, and crew submarine vessels" that can withstand harsh underwater environments and the bizarre creatures that are able to thrive in such areas. Gosh, it all sounds so great, though admittedly much is being left to our imaginations at this point in development.

That said, I'm glad to know such an interesting game concept is in capable hands.

Japanese Christmas Light Displays Are Simultaneously Absurd and Calming

Japanese Christmas Light Displays Are Simultaneously Absurd and Calming

In south Japan, Mie prefecture is rocking 7 million LED Christmas lights. Hence the awesome light tunnel above. "Illuminations" or Christmas light displays have been a big deal in Japan since the 1980s. But there's something a lot more contemplative about these lights compared to some of the spectacles in the U.S..
