Mario Kart 8 gets 8 new tracks: Baby Park, Animal Crossing, and more

by Steven Hansen

Nintendo detailed its DLC Pack 2 for Mario Kart 8 during a recent Nintendo Direct. The 200cc races are coming free for all, but you gotta pay if you want to play (the 8 new tracks). The Animal Crossing: New Leaf track is lovely. And the F-Zero track ain't bad, even if some people would just rather have, you know, more F-Zero.

Looks like old additions are Baby Park, Ribbon Road, Neo Bowser City and Cheese Land, while the new tracks are Nature Road, Big Blue, Lingling Metro, and Animal Crossing.

FireChat: How to Chat Without Wifi or a Signal

by Shay Meinecke
firechat

Slow connection? Can’t find Wi-Fi? No problem! The FireChat app allows users to stay connected off the grid. FireChat isn’t a completely new concept. Peer-to-peer technology has been used for years. Napster first used peer-to-peer technology to allow users to share music files. More recently, the Serval Project was developed to keep people connected during a disaster when data networks go down by using mesh networks, which may just be the future of communication. So, Why is FireChat Important? The FireChat app, made by startup company Open Garden in San Francisco, first gained popularity when over 500,000 people downloaded the app during...

Kludgey Electronic Health Records Are Becomming Fodder For Malpractice Suits

by timothy
Lucas123 writes The inherent issues that come with highly complex and kludgey electronic medical records — and for the healthcare professionals required to use them — hasn't been lost on lawyers, who see the potential for millions of dollars in judgments for plaintiffs suing for medical negligence or malpractice. Work flows that require a dozen or more mouse clicks to input even basic patient information has prompted healthcare workers to seek short cuts, such as cutting and pasting from previous visits, a practice that can also include the duplication of old vital sign data, or other critical information, such as a patient's age. While the malpractice suits have to date focused on care providers, they'll soon target EMR vendors, according to Keith Klein, a medical doctor and professor of medicine at UCLA. Klein has been called as an expert witness for more than 350 state or federal medical malpractice cases and he's seen a marked rise in plaintiff attorney's using EMRs as evidence that healthcare workers fell short of their responsibility for proper care. In one such case, a judge awarded more than $7.5 million when a patient suffered permanent kidney damage, and even though physicians hadn't neglected the patient, the complexity of the EMR was responsible for them missing uric kidney stone. The EMR was ore than 3,000 pages in length and included massive amounts of duplicated information, something that's not uncommon.

Guitar Hero Is Back This Fall, And You'll Only Need Three Fingers

by Sean Hollister

“This is stupid,” I try to tell myself. “Weren’t music games just a fad?” For one long minute, I struggle to hit a single note on my plastic axe, as game developers and PR people fire eye-daggers into the back of my head. But then, all of a sudden, it clicks. I’m strumming up a storm. I’m playing the new Guitar Hero—and it’s surprisingly awesome.

Christian Bale Based His Patrick Bateman on Tom Cruise for American Psycho

by Lisa Marcus

When Christian Bale, an actor who is always dead serious about preparing for his roles, prepped to star as the lead in American Psycho, he used the personality of Tom Cruise as inspiration.

Director Mary Harron said in an interview that during the pre-production phase, the actor had watched an episode of Late Night with David Letterman in which Tom Cruise was featured. Bale noticed something in Cruise's manner that he thought would work for his character of preppy psychopath Patrick Bateman.

“It was definitely a process. [Bale and I] talked a lot, but he was in L.A. and I was in New York. We didn’t actually meet in person a lot, just talked on the phone. We talked about how Martian-like Patrick Bateman was, how he was looking at the world like somebody from another planet, watching what people did and trying to work out the right way to behave. And then one day he called me and he had been watching Tom Cruise on David Letterman, and he just had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes, and he was really taken with this energy.”

Once one knows that, it's almost impossible not to see Cruise in some of Bateman's cheesy yet manic grins and exceptionally animated quips.

Curiosity rover finds evidence that small amounts of liquid water exist on Mars

by Space.com

Feed-twFeed-fb

Liquid water lurks just below the surface of Mars on cold winter nights, according to new research.

The Mars Curiosity rover has found evidence that when temperatures drop on cold winter nights, trace amounts of water from the atmosphere can turn to frost, which can then be absorbed into the upper layers of the Martian soil and liquefied. The liquid water evaporates back into the atmosphere after sunrise, when temperatures start to go up again.

Turning water from a solid (frost) to a liquid requires the presence of a particular type of salt that scientists say could melt the frost, even in very cold temperatures (salt lowers the melting temperature of water, which is why it's put down on icy sidewalks and roads during winter). However, the authors of the new work say the small amounts of liquid salt water in the soil would not be enough to support microbial life. The extreme temperatures would also make the environment too extreme. Read more...

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Director James Gunn Praises ‘Daredevil’

by Germain Lussier

james gunn Daredevil

Unless you’re Joss Whedon, many Marvel fans spent their weekend binging on the first Netflix series, Daredevil. We’ve posted a few thoughts on the series and will have more soon as everyone catches up on the superhero show.

One of those fans who got to watch the series was another Marvel director, James Gunn. Gunn is a longtime Daredevil fan and, like many people, felt a bit skeptical about the show at first. Well, that changed when he watched the first few episodes and Gunn took to Facebook to heap praise on the show. Read the James Gunn Daredevil quotes below.

The below comes from James Gunn’s Facebook page:

I have loved the character of Daredevil since I was a little boy. Outside of Batman, Daredevil probably has more great comic book arcs than any other character. From Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli to Kevin Smith to Ed Brubaker and on and on, the character has elicited some of the best work from some of the greatest comic book storytellers.

So I was a bit frightened last night when I dug into the new Marvel’s Daredevil Netflix series. I’m a rough TV critic – I love five or so shows on the air right now, but that’s about it – and I didn’t want to see one of my favorite characters come up short. On top of that I really like Steven S. DeKnight, the showrunner, and Drew Goddard, the creator, both as people and as creative forces (Spartacus, Cloverfield, Cabin in the Woods, etc).

Well, I love it. The cast is great. Charlie Cox is just awesome, and Elden Henson is about as an amazing a Foggy as I could have imagined. The fight sequences stand alongside Spartacus and Rome as some of the best TV fight sequences ever (so, the best TV fight sequences ever not performed in togas). And the scripts have been touching and on point and true to the character. In the first few episodes, I cried twice: once in a scene between young Matt and battling Jack, and again when I realized this character I loved so much for so long had been brought to television with such spirit, love, and care.

What I’m saying is, there’s a huge Marvel event going on right now, and it’s Daredevil onNetflix I hope you guys check it out.

That’s pretty awesome. And who knows? Maybe a few years down the road, Matt Murdock could meet some of James Gunn’s characters. After all, they’re all in the same universe.

Now You See It: Kieru’s Monochromatic Ninja Multiplayer

by Emily Gera

Fans of Obscure Gera Facts will know I’m a big supporter of experimental multiplayer design, which is why when you first glance at Kieru I kindly ask you not to glaze over because it basically looks identical to MadWorld.

The game is heavily stylised, but it’s all for the sake of a really neat gameplay concept. “Kieru’s world is monochrome, as are the two teams of stealthy Ninjas who occupy it,” reads a block of text from the game developers, the little Aussie collective Pine Fire Studios. “A black Ninja in shadow or a white Ninja in the light are completely invisible to their oblivious opponents. Stealth, deception and sudden, surprise aggression will win the day.”
