Underground Hacking Economy Values Your Identity at $25
It's surprisingly cheap to purchase stolen credit card details and full blown identities
Your identity is worth around the cost of two movie tickets, or a pair of tickets and a bucket of popcorn, depending on where you live. That's according to a menu of items available in the underground market, a place where you can purchase someone's Visa or MasterCard details, including CCV code, for a mere $4. Fancy yourself an American Express gent? That runs $7, versus $8 for stolen Discover Card details.
These are just some of the prices revealed by Joe Stewart, Director of Malware Research for the Counter Threat Unit (CTU) at Dell SecureWorks, and David Shear, an independent researcher, who together dove into the dark underground marketplace to investigate what's being sold and for how much.
It's not really a surprise that so much stolen digital data is easily accessible with a little digging, but the low prices are certainly eye opening. If you want banking login credentials for someone with between $70,000 and $150,000, it'll cost $300 or less. It 2011, $300 only netted you a bank account with $7,000 in it.
Going down the list, 1,000 infected computers is just $20, and the more you buy, the better the deal (5,000 infected PCs go for $90, 10,000 for $160, and 15,000 for $250). You can also purchase malware and exploit kits, as well as DDoS attacks and more.
"For the most part, it does not appear that the types of hacker services and stolen data for sell on the hacker underground have changed dramatically in the past several years. The only noticeable difference is the drop in price for online bank account credentials and the drop in price for Fullz or Personal Credentials," the researchers concluded.
As always, take a moment to make sure your security and computing habits are up to snuff. If you're a business owner, that also includes educating your employees on computer security.

US Air Force fighter jets will have laser weapons by 2030
A new request by the Air Force Research Lab reveals that the USAF is planning to have laser weapons built in the next generation of fighters by 2030, the US Naval Institute reports. The new jet fighters will be equipped with both defensive and offensive lasers. I'm glad we're getting ready for the incoming alien invasion.
Bridgestone's Futuristic Airless-Tires Are Almost Ready For Your Car

Bridgestone continues to taunt us with its wonderful airless tires that promise enhanced durability, minimal maintenance, and the ability to never go flat. Previously, the tiremaker was only demonstrating smaller versions of the wheel designed for golf carts and the like, but at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show it's finally revealed a larger version bringing the innovative tires one step—or roll—closer to your car.
Virgin Galactic now accepting Bitcoin for future flights into space
As the value and credibility of Bitcoin continues to skyrocket, Virgin founder Richard Branson now wants to let people use the digital currency to finance a flight into space. Ahead of its first trips next year, Virgin Galactic has already had one "future astronaut" from Hawaii book a Bitcoin-funded ticket and hopes that its affluent clientele will follow suit. An investor himself, Branson has been pushing for governments to regulate the peer-to-peer payment system and believes that today's announcement will give it more credibility. Neither Virgin Galactic nor Branson has indicated just how many Bitcoins you'll need before you get a return ticket to the heavens, but we suspect this isn't the future that Gene Roddenberry was planning.

Wing Commander series half-off on GOG.com
GOG.com has added another feather in their cap with the release today of Wing Commander: Armada, the 1994 addition to the series which brought multiplayer game modes for the first time. And to celebrate, they're putting their entire collection of Wing Commander titles (which has everything short of the barely connected Privateer 2) on sale for half the price if you buy the entire stack of games. The sale runs for the next week.
Wing Commander was not my favorite game for space dogfighting. That distinction goes to the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games. They were still great fun and I'm considering going in on this deal if for no other reason that to watch cutscenes of Mark Hamill and Malcolm Macdowell hamming it up.

Palette embraces the buttons, dials and sliders that touchscreens forgot
Gone are the days of buttons, switches and dials. We're all touchscreen and trackpad now. If you're among those that miss the tactile sensation and precision that switches and toggles offer and have $100 or so burning a hole in your pocket, however, you're right in the pitching sweet spot for Palette's Kickstarter campaign. The module controllers daisy chain in the configuration of your choosing to create a customize hardware interface for a number of different scenarios, including gaming, creative suites and even live DJing. Palette's also offering up a number of aesthetic choices for the controllers, including brushed aluminum and cherry wood -- there's also built in LED lighting, for those impromptu parties you're no doubt planning. The team behind the creation is shooting for $95,012 over on the crowdfunding site. A pledge of $99 will get you the starter kit, which includes four modules. That's set to start shipping in June.

Carnegie Mellon computer learns common sense through pictures, shows what it's thinking
Humans have a knack for making visual associations, but computers don't have it so easy; we often have to tell them what they see. Carnegie Mellon's recently launched Never Ending Image Learner (NEIL) supercomputer bucks that trend by forming those connections itself. Building on the university's earlier NELL research, the 200-core cluster scours the internet for images and defines objects based on the common attributes that it finds. It knows that buildings are frequently tall, for example, and that ducks look like geese. While NEIL is occasionally prone to making mistakes, it's also transparent -- a public page lets you see what it's learning, and you can suggest queries if you think there's a gap in the system's logic. The project could eventually lead to computers and robots with a much better understanding of the world around them, even if they never quite gain human-like perception.

Watch a crab climb out of its old shell like a mutant

Crabs are red alien water tarantulas who regenerate like mutants. Just look at this crab literally climb out of its old shell and toss away that used exoskeleton like it's a dirty pair of pants. So gross but so cool. I kind of wish I could shed skin like this. It'd probably be the most refreshing feeling ever.
An unbreakable man somehow survived this insane 190 mph car crash

Oh my God. Look at this car violently tumble over and over and over again in a crash at a land speed event. The car is mutilated and destroyed and is hardly even recognizable as a vehicle anymore. It's horrific. It's awful. And it's completely unbelievable that the driver of the car, racer Brian Gillespie, survived the crash with only minor injuries. It's a miracle. He must be unbreakable.
Xbox One's Kinect can't see you naked, says Microsoft
Did you see a penis in this video? It seems the above tech demo left some people concerned that the Xbox One's new, better Kinect would be able to see your genitals. People are (understandably) rather paranoid about their privacy (and privates) when it comes to Kinect.
A Microsoft representative, speaking to IGN, explained, "There is no tech magic going on here and Kinect cannot see through clothing. Furthermore, the video was an illustration of the various camera views available for the creation of games and apps. This view is only accessible on a development kit and is not viewable on retail consoles."
The alleged penis was chalked up to, "a fold in the denim."
So, no, the Xbox One can't see your junk. Unless you willingly expose yourself to it. And with that full HD Skype capability, it might be hard to resist.

Beyond: Two Souls DLC looks like an obstacle course
Here we have a trailer for the latest DLC release for Beyond: Two Souls, "Advanced Experiments." The video sets up a boring, white-walled obstacle course with a thirty-minute time limit which Jodie and Aiden will work together to navigate. It's currently available on PSN for $4.99.
Might be fun, but it's not the kind of thing I would have expected to come as DLC for Beyond. I never got the sense from reviews that action gameplay was a strong suit, and that's all this appears to be. Besides, where are all the emotions?

This Starscream Hoodie Will Transform What Your Co-Workers Think of You

After delighting kids and toy collectors in the 1980s, it's nice to see the Transformers still enjoying some modicum of popularity. And while the Hollywood blockbusters have been forgettable, this wonderful Starscream hoodie—complete with presumably non-working wings—is not.
European University Accepts Bitcoins as Tuition Payment

The University of Nicosia announced it will be the world's first to accept bitcoins as tuition payment.
The university, which is the largest on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, is also launching a digital currency course to better understand how bitcoin works.
"The intention of this initiative is to ease transmission difficulties for certain students and to build our own practical knowledge about this field, not to engage in currency speculation," a university spokesperson told GeekWire.
In addition to the main university, all of its affiliated universities will accept bitcoin payments — for all types of tuition and fees. Read more...
