Start your day with this soothing Legend of Zelda cover
I don't think I will ever tire of the music form The Legend of Zelda. The series has provided some of the most memorable and inspirational music in gaming -- with Ocarina of Time standing front and center with some of its best.
And with that, here's my latest obsession. An amazing medley of Ocarina's Song of Time and Song of Storms by violinist Taylor Davis. It's quite a stunning cover, with a video that is equally charming. You also gotta love the spot-on Shiek costume she's sporting.
If you enjoyed what you heard, Davis is currently selling a 16-track album of Zelda music digitally, which you can preview right here.

Honey Bees Trained to Detect Cancer on Patients' Breath

Doctors have long treated patients for exceptionally bad bee stings, but now, it looks like the insects may be helping the field of medicine.
New research from Inscentinel, a UK-based firm specializing in insect research, suggests that honey bees can be trained to detect certain early-stage cancers in humans.

Using this breakthrough, Portuguese designer Susana Soares has developed a glass device for diagnosis using honey bees and a patient's breath
Thanks to their super-sensitive sense of smell, bees can detect odors that a human nose can't, Soares explains on her website. Biomarkers associated with tuberculosis, lung cancer, skin cancer and diabetes, which can all be detected through smell, are present on a patient's breath. Read more...

The Raspberry Pi computing platform definitely has some interesting applications. This project is no exception, because it will allow users of all ages and experience to assemble a DIY computer. A Raspberry Pi is used as the brains of the operation.
The MAP Project Office collaborated with Kano to create this DIY computer kit. It’s a complete computer system that its makers claim is as easy to assemble as LEGO.
The system comes with a two-part bumper case for the computer board, as well as a custom wireless keyboard, with a built-in touchpad and color-coded buttons, making it kid-friendly. It connects to any monitor with an HDMI port, and comes with an 8GB SD card pre-loaded with the Kano OS and tools to help learn how to program. The open source computer can run pretty much any Debian Linux package, and will come with easy-to-use software for creating and playing simple games.
The KANO KIT DIY Computer is being crowdfunded via Kickstarter. You’ll have to pledge at least $119(USD) to get yours. With nearly a month of funding left, the project has amassed more than $560,000 against a goal of just $100,000. Needless to say, it will go into production.

Xbox One can be controlled with Logitech Harmony remotes
The Logitech Harmony series of universal remotes just became a little more universal, thanks to the added ability to control the freshly-launched Xbox One. A post on the Logitech blog reveals that the company has been working with Microsoft to ensure Harmony remote compatibility, and that all users should be able to control their system with the universal remotes from day one.Previous-gen consoles (are they officially previous-gen now?) like the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii could be controlled by certain Harmony models in the past. The Xbox 360 was controlled via an IR sensor, while the PS3 and Wii were controlled via Bluetooth. The Logitech website doesn't specify how the Xbox One and Harmony remotes communicate, but each new Microsoft console does come with a big rectangle that blasts IR signals. We'll let you do the math and speculation from there.
The Xbox One currently lacks a first-party remote such as the Xbox 360 Media Remote, but in the meantime, the Harmony remotes will get you around your dashboard if, say, you don't want to talk to your console, wave your hands or use the controller.

NSA Infected 50,000 Computer Networks Worldwide With Malware: Report

The U.SNational Security Agency hacked more than 50,000 computer networks worldwide last year, infecting them with malware used to conduct sophisticated spy operations, according to a top-secret slide leaked by Edward Snowden.
The new revelation comes from a 2012 PowerPoint slide published by Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad. The document shows a world map that highlights, among other things, more than 50,000 "world-wide implants" under the category "CNE" (Computer Network Exploitation) — NSA jargon for malware infections
Conducted by the Tailored Access Operations unit, the NSA's elite hacker team, one example of a CNE operation is the reported attack against Belgian telecom company Belgacom, according to NRC Handelsblad. However, that attack was previously reported to be carried out by NSA ally, the UK Government Communications Headquarters, a British intelligence agency. Read more...

My 15th anniversary tribute to Ocarina of Time
[Dtoid community blogger kingsharkboi remembers one of the greatest games of all time (and shares some wonderful tribute music in the process). Want to see your own blog appear on our front page? Go write something! --Mr Andy Dixon]
This week marks at least a couple of significant highlights for gaming fans, not the least of which include the Xbox One launch, the release of Super Mario 3D World, and of course The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. But I'd like to take the time out to celebrate the anniversary of one of the most significant titles in this interactive medium. A title that has no doubt played a large part in inspiring many audiences to look to videogames for providing that perfect sense of adventure, escapism, and discovery we've all come to know throughout the years.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is now 15 years old as of 11/21/2013, and remains my favorite videogame ever since I first experienced the Hero of Time's gripping journey.

Study: Men with Attractive Wives More Satisfied in Marriage
(Image: Reluctant Groom cake topper now on sale at the NeatoShop)
Well, obviously, if you love your wife, you’re more likely to find her beautiful. But the study results published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology was more sophisticated than that. First, the researchers had outside people objectively rate the attractiveness of the couples in the study group. I don’t know how you can rate beauty objectively, but the study attempted to do so.
Over 4 years of marriage, the men with hotter wives (like mine) reported higher levels of satisfaction with their marriages than the men with wives that the researchers had rated as less attractive.
The women in the study, however, seemed unaffected by the attractiveness—or lack thereof—of their husbands.
So, guys, it’s okay to let yourself go.
