Fearless man plays with grizzly bears like you play with your dog

Oh, nothing to see here. Just a guy playing wrestle with a grizzly bear and letting it fake swallow his head. Wait, what? Mmhmm. Bear trainer Doug Seus plays around with an 8 foot tall behemoth of a beast the same way you would mess around with your dog. It's stunning to see.

Dying grandmother's mystery code cracked by the internet after 20 years

Ask MetaFilter member JannaK presented the community with a puzzle that had been troubling her family for nearly 20 years. Her grandmother died in 1996 from cancer and in her last days she scribbled down a seemingly non-sensical string of characters on index cards. Nobody knew what it all meant. Then the Metafilter community solved the puzzle in 14 minutes.

Why Whistleblowers Can't Get a Fair Trial

by samzenpus
phantomfive writes "'Seven whistleblowers have been prosecuted under the Obama administration,' writes Jesselyn Radack, a lawyer who advised two of them. She explains why they can't get a fair trial. In the Thomas Drake case, the administration retroactively marked documents as classified, saying, 'he knew they should have been classified.' In the Bradley Manning case, the jury wasn't allowed to see what information was leaked. The defendants, all who have been charged with espionage, have limited access to court documents. Most of these problems happen because the law was written to deal with traitorous spies, not whistleblowers."

Studies Say Earth Won't Die As Soon As Thought

by samzenpus
sciencehabit writes "Take a deep breath—Earth is not going to die as soon as scientists believed. Two new modeling studies find that the gradually brightening sun won't vaporize our planet's water for at least another 1 billion to 1.5 billion years—hundreds of millions of years later than a slightly older model had forecast. The findings won't change your retirement plans but could imply that habitable, Earth-like alien worlds are more common than scientists thought."

New Supernova Seen In Nearby Galaxy M82

by Unknown Lamer
The Bad Astronomer writes "A new and potentially bright supernova was just discovered in the nearby galaxy M82. This is a Type Ia supernova, the catastrophic explosion of a white dwarf. It appears to be on the rise, and may have been caught as much as two weeks before peak brightness. It's currently already brighter than magnitude 12, and may get to mag 8, easy to see in small telescopes. The galaxy is less than 12 million light years away, so this may become one of the best-studied supernovae in recent times. Type Ia supernovae are used to measure dark energy, so seeing one nearby is a huge boon to astronomy."

Celebrating Dungeons & Dragons' 40th Anniversary

by samzenpus
disconj writes "With the 40th anniversary of the release of Dungeons & Dragons coming up this weekend, the Internet is ablaze with reflections on its legacy. Dave Ewalt gives an intro for the uninitiated. Ethan Gilsdorf explains how 'all I need to know about life I learned from Dungeons & Dragons'. Finally, Jon Peterson presents a video show-and-tell of rare artifacts from D&D's development." The real question is how many characters have you lost in Tomb of Horrors?

Fighting the Flu May Hurt Those Around You

by Unknown Lamer
sciencehabit writes "When you've got the flu, it can't hurt to take an aspirin or an ibuprofen to control the fever and make you feel better, right? Wrong, some scientists say. Lowering your body temperature may make the virus replicate faster and increase the risk that you transmit it to others. A new study claims that there are at least 700 extra influenza deaths in the United States every year because people suppress their fever."

Warcraft movie starts filming today?

by (Adam Koebel)
Warcraft Movie Concept Art
After years of rumors, delays, and speculation it appears the Warcraft movie has finally begun filming. Director Duncan Jones tweeted late last night that today was going to be the first shoot day, but wasn't exactly specific if this was related to Warcraft or not. The originally reported shoot schedule of January, plus tweets such as this leads us to believe that it is indeed Warcraft. Joining him on the Vancouver, Canada set will be Warcraft's list of stars: Travis Fimmell, Dominic Cooper, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Robert Kazinsky, Clancy Brown, Toby Kebbell, and Daniel Wu.

Going to start shooting the movie tomorrow. Crikey! Better find my specs!

- Duncan Jones (@ManMadeMoon) January 20, 2014

Warcraft will be an orcs vs. humans origin story, featuring the characters of Anduin Lothar and Durotan. We know little else about the movie's plot or characters but you can check out our Warcraft movie panel liveblog from BlizzCon 2013 for more information. The film has an announced release date of March 11, 2016. Do you think Warcraft will buck the trend of mediocre video game to movie adaptations?
