Canucks prospect Jacob Markstrom goalie fight (VIDEO)

by Rob Williams

Not a great fight...but you have to love goalies going at it.

What do hockey fans love more than anything else in the whole world? That’s right, goalie fights! I think even the people that don’t like fighting in hockey still kind of like goalie fights. I mean look at them. They can hardly throw a punch with all of their padding, so they rarely do much damage. They’re […]

When one of these blows up...worlds most expensive glitter bomb!

Space telescope Hubble and its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope are made with huge, expensive mirrors. And that can be a problem when you’re paying to launch the thing into space. So instead of one big mirror, how about thousands, or even millions, of tiny ones? In other words, how about glitter?

A Dude Will Live In This Giant Ball for One Year to Study Icebergs

It sounds like a great idea: Grab a cleaving iceberg from the Greenland coast and live on it until it melts into the sea, getting a first-hand glimpse at the effects of climate change. But how exactly would one live on an iceberg? Inside this giant ball, of course.

Yves Béhar’s Touchscreen Sodastream MIX Is a Mixologist’s Dream Machine

by Gregory Han
Prettocraig

before you get excited its not out for at least a year.

Yves Béhar’s Touchscreen Sodastream MIX Is a Mixologist’s Dream Machine

According to industry data soda volume sales have dropped for the 10th year straight. Blame it on the public’s realization chugging back cans of bubbly sugar water (or artificially sweetened diet drinks) too often isn’t the greatest of habits. But that doesn’t mean fizz has gone out of fashion; the flip-side is Americans are increasingly making their own sodas at home, and more likely than not it’s being done with consumer-friendly CO2-infusing machines like those made by Sodastream.

The newest update from Israeli maker Sodastream may arguably be the largest technological leap in soda making technology ever, upping the ante in a market where machines primarily do the same thing: inject carbon dioxide into water, but only water. For not only is the new Sodastream MIX equipped with a touchscreen color display, the unit is now Bluetooth, iOS/Android app, and cloud connected, all for the purpose of doing something which may perk the ears of mixologists and the home entertaining set everywhere. The Sodastream MIX can carbonate almost any beverage.

Fruit juice, alcohol, punch, coconut water, chocolate milk…all will be fair game when it comes to carbonation thanks to a system infusing precise bursts of CO2 with “the right amount of intensity and length of carbonation” which was formerly unavailable.

SodaStreamMIX_APP

The yet to be priced MIX was designed again by Yves Béhar’s Fuseproject. Behar and team took much of what was successful of their original minimalist and monolithic Sodastream Source design and infused it with technological features which transform this latest version from tool into a full blown app-enabled kitchen appliance, but this time in a sleek and handsome color combination of black and lipstick red.

sodastream-MIX-2

Inside, the MIX’s library of drinks is planned to be continually updated and bolstered by user concoctions as picked by Sodastream to add to their iOS and Android companion apps for download onto the MIX, seeding a community of experimentation and sharing which may make sharing a drink from afar a reality when released sometime in 2016.

Everything is Architecture

by Geoff Manaugh
Prettocraig

cool idea

[Image: An "unofficial illustration" of the idea by Huntington Ingalls, via gCaptain].

A Washington state legislator has channeled his inner Hans Hollein, proposing the radical adaptive urban reuse of discarded military equipment: turning old aircraft carriers into a new toll bridge for Seattle.

From gCaptain:
A Washington state lawmaker looking to ease traffic congestion for several Puget Sound-area communities near Seattle has proposed building an eye-catching new toll bridge made from retired Navy aircraft carriers.
It would involve at least two—although possibly many more—aircraft carriers laid "end to end" to cross a local stretch of water known as the Sinclair Inlet.

"This would definitely be a unique way to tackle some of those problems," the representative stated to the AP, "but at the same time it would serve as a floating memorial to veterans and the sacrifice they have given to our country."

[Image: "Aircraft Carrier City in Landscape, project, Exterior perspective," by Hans Hollein (1064); via MoMA].

Just think of the epic possibilities here for pedestrian paths, interstitial business opportunities, weird spaces for physical fitness, peripheral plazas and decks available for private events, and new public park space.

Perhaps even, deep in the labyrinth of the old ships' underbellies, you could open a restaurant, a bookstore, a cinema. A SCUBA academy. An architecture school.

It would be like a return to the inhabited bridges of an earlier age —

[Images: (top) Old London Bridge; (bottom) Old London Bridge painted by Peter Jackson.

—only gunmetal grey and prickly with artillery, like a surreal hybridization of Constant's New Babylon and the U.S. Navy.

Of course, this isn't exactly a real plan—it's more of a casual remark by a state politician. No feasible studies, environmental reviews, or financial plans have yet been put in place, for example (although apparently one is in the works), and I personally doubt that such a thing could ever see the light of day.

But here's to weird architectural visions popping up in unexpected contexts—and to the future civilian reuse of discarded military equipment, even (or especially) in spectacular urban ways such as this.

(Spotted via Todd Lappin. Those images of Old London Bridge and Constant's New Babylon also appeared in an earlier post on BLDGBLOG called We'd all be living in dams).

The Hybrid, 3D Printed Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 Concept Pushes Luxury Forward

by Gregory Han

The Hybrid, 3D Printed Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 Concept Pushes Luxury Forward

Bentley’s connection with top tier opulence and handmade craftsmanship on four wheels is well established and storied, with models like their Flying Spur and Mulsanne already synonymous with the life less ordinary. But the Crewe, United Kingdom automotive manufacturer isn’t resting on their hand-stitched laurels, recognizing the brand’s reputation, like any luxury name, requires continually conceptualizing and redefining.

Their latest concept car the EXP 10 Speed 6, unveiled at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show, is Bentley’s attempt to connect the automotive brand’s motorsport racing past with present day innovations in a more sporty stance. 3D metal printing technology, a powerful yet efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain (details scant at this time), and an expansive touchscreen cabin control display are combined within the package of an aggressively crouching feline profile designed to “challenge competitors and define a new segment benchmark”. It’s certainly a Bentley we haven’t seen before.

The EXP 10 Speed 6 concept showcases the brand's renowned attention to the smallest details – traditionally handled by craftsman – brought forward into the 21st century utilizing 3D metal printing technology across the grille mesh, exhausts, door handles and side vents. Intricate lattice detailing is mirrored across the quilted leather interior and onto the glass of the headlamps.

Intricate lattice detailing is mirrored across the quilted leather interior, audio speaker grills, and noticeably onto the glass of the headlamps.

“This is not just a new sports car concept – but the potential Bentley sports car – a bold vision for a brand with a bold future.” – Wolfgang Dürheimer, Bentley CEO

Bentley has reinterpreted signature detailing like their iconic matrix grill – one that now hides a giant "6" only visible from certain angles – to a bold quartet of LED-powered headlamps, to a specially formulated metallic version of British Racing Green paintwork which boldly marks the brand's motorsports heritage.

Bentley-EXP10_SPEED_6d0

Bentley says the EXP 10 Speed 6’s muscular athletic surface design takes cues from above…high above…the aerodynamic shapes of aircraft fuselages and wings, sporting a low-hung aerodynamic profile compared to Bentley’s traditionally upright stature which extends into the two-seat sports car’s interior cabin with its two symmetrical wings spanning the console front. It’s hard not to see hints of Jaguar and Aston Martin design DNA in this vehicles profile, but the indulgent interior cabin is unmistakably Bentley with its signature sumptuous craftsmanship.

Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer has hinted this concept isn’t just a design exercise and may be further refined into production as the fifth spoke of Bentley’s large spoked wheel of models, joining the Mulsanne, Flying Spur, Continental GT, and Bentayga SUV as the most sporty of the Bentley vehicles. Let’s hope so, as this next-gen Bentley vehicle seems poised to give the heritage brand a more aerodynamic feather to add to its cap.

Artist removes 1 inch off the peak of England’s highest mountain; Brits want their inch back.

It is still England’s highest mountain, but Scafell Pike is ever so slightly smaller now after an artist stole the top inch of the summit to display in a gallery.
Oscar Santillan, 34, was accused of vandalism after removing the stone pinnacle of the 3,209ft Lake District peak for an exhibition in London.
Ian Stephens, managing director of Cumbria Tourism, said: “This is taking the mickey and we want the top of our mountain back.”

Brits want a single inch of mountain returned but haven’t done anything about, IDK, nearly every exhibit in the British Museum. Interesting.

Watching CDs Explode At 170,000 FPS Is Better Than Fireworks
