Game of Thrones season premiere underscores show’s lack of focus

by Andrew Cunningham

Spoilers abound in this article, but I kind of agree. Let's see some action!

Spoiler alert: The below contains heavy spoilers for the Game of Thrones season six premiere and the entire series to date. If you haven’t watched and want to go in fresh, stop reading now.

Though Game of Thrones has earned a reputation for its top-billing-can’t-keep-you-safe unpredictability, the season six premiere last night did what every Game of Thrones premiere has done. It’s a sweeping check-in on the characters who are still standing and a chance to resolve most of the major cliffhangers from last year. Only once that's done do we begin the arduous table-setting process for what we hope are the more action-heavy episodes that typically hit around the middle and end of the season.

So let’s remember where everyone was at the end of last year:

SpaceX says it will fly a spacecraft to Mars as soon as 2018

Philip.paulsson

Awesome.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX announced plans Wednesday to land a spacecraft on Mars as soon as 2018, an extraordinarily ambitious plan under an very tight timeline. In a statement NASA said it would help.

SpaceX made the announcement on Twitter, saying the landing would "inform its overall Mars architecture." Musk has said the company hopes later this year to unveil its plan to get humans to the Red Planet by as soon as 2025.

Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur who also runs the electric car maker Tesla, founded SpaceX more than 10 years ago with the goal of colonizing Mars.

In a statement, NASA said it is providing technical support for SpaceX’s mission. In exchange, SpaceX would provide “valuable entry, descent and landing data to NASA for our journey to Mars, while providing support to American industry.”

Getting there, however, is exceedingly difficult--even for governments, let alone a privately held space company. On average, Mars is 140 million miles from Earth, though the planets come to within about 35 million miles every 26 months. Even under the best circumstances it takes months to get there, and the environment of deep space is tremendously harsh. Skeptics think that despite its grand aspirations, NASA remains far from getting humans there. Of the 43 robotic missions to Mars, including flybys, that have been attempted by four different countries, only 18 have been total successes.

Once a spunky startup, SpaceX, based in Hawthorne, Calif., has become a major force in the burgeoning space industry, with more than 4,000 employees, a backlog of orders to launch commercial satellites and multi-billion dollar contracts with NASA to fly cargo and eventually astronauts to the International Space Station on its Falcon 9 rocket.

Recently it pulled off feats once thought impossible—the vertical landings of its Falcon 9 rocket’s first stage, one on a helicopter-like pad at Cape Canaveral and another on a ship in the ocean. The accomplishments of recovering and reusing rockets that were normally discarded after each flight could help lower the cost of spaceflight. And the successes have reignited interest in space, which has seemed dormant since the retirement of the space shuttle in 2011.

SpaceX is currently developing a new Dragon spacecraft that would be able to fly humans—and not just cargo—to the space station. It’s also working on a more powerful rocket, the Falcon Heavy, which SpaceX says would become the world’s most powerful rocket with thrust at liftoff equivalent to 18 747 jetliners.

“Falcon heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space and restores the possibility of flying missions with crew to the moon or Mars,” SpaceX says on its website.

The rocket is slated to launch for the first time later this year from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. SpaceX is leasing the historic launch pad 39A, which launched many of the Apollo and space shuttle missions.

John Logsdon, a noted space historian and a professor emeritus at George Washington University, said that SpaceX "likes to do bravado things."

He noted that the company has yet to launch its Falcon Heavy, and it has yet to land its Dragon using its own engine thrust, a key component in landing in the Martian atmosphere.

SpaceX pushes "the limits of feasibility," he said. "To think that you can get this all together in two years since two of the key steps have not been demonstrated."
But he praised the company's engineering prowess and said it was smart to partner with NASA.

"NASA has more expertise in getting to and landing on Mars than any other organization in the world," he said. "So if a us company wants to try it on a no-exchange-of-funds basis, why not?"

For Musk, Mars has long been something of an obsession. Before he founded SpaceX, he was curious to know when NASA planned to send humans there, so he checked the agency’s website, he said at a conference a few years ago.

“Because, of course, there had to be a schedule,” he said at the time. “And I couldn't find it. I thought the problem was me. Because, of course, it must be here somewhere on this website, but just well hidden. And it turned out it wasn't on the website at all. Which was shocking.”

In an effort to drum up support for NASA and galvanize the public, he decided to buy a rocket and send a greenhouse to Mars, which would be the furthest life had traveled and the first living thing on Mars. But buying a rocket proved to be too difficult and expensive, and Musk decided he’d build them on his own. Musk, the co-founder of PayPal, invested $100 million of his own money into SpaceX.

Later this year, he is expected to lay out how SpaceX plans to fly humans to Mars. He has said he wants to colonize Mars so that humanity has a back-up plan in case anything should happen to Earth, such as an asteroid hitting it.

At a recent conference he said he wants to go to Mars for “the defensive reason of protecting the future of humanity, ensuring that the light of consciousness is not extinguished should some calamity befall Earth.”

But what drives him most is what has drove generations of explorers before him, what NASA long stood for, which was, simply, “that this would be an incredible adventure.”

Creative people use the right side of their brain more.

Lots of people believe it, but the research doesn't back it up. The two halves of the brain are not identical – a lot of your language processing probably goes on in your left hemisphere, for instance – but everyone uses both halves of their brain. There's no evidence that "creative" people use the right hemisphere more, or that "logical" people use the left.

Stretching before exercise makes you ache less after it.

Nope, probably not. A Cochrane Review, a comprehensive roundup of the scientific evidence, looked at 12 studies, and found that warm-ups had only the tiniest effect on delayed onset muscle soreness after exercise.

Several other literature reviews found either no evidence or inconclusive evidence for whether warm-ups reduce the chance of injury, as well, although that may be because not enough good research has been done.

How This Woman Changed Gender Inequality In Swedish Films

by Ariane Lange
Philip.paulsson

Go Sweden!

Anna Serner

Marie-Therese Karlberg / Via filminstitutet.se

Anna Serner, CEO of the Swedish Film Institute, began insisting shortly after her appointment in 2011 that the SFI reach some serious gender parity goals with the films it decides to fund. With the support and cooperation of the commissioners who work for her, today there is now a near-even split among male and female directors, screenwriters, and producers whose projects are backed by the Stockholm-based group.

On April 25, Serner was on hand to deliver a lecture to an audience of mostly New York Film Academy students in Burbank, California, during which she tore apart the excuses for gender inequality used by executives in both the Swedish film industry and Hollywood. Her castigations seemed all too relevant: Just last week, TheWrap reported that Fox and Paramount have not hired a single woman to direct their respective slates of more than 20 upcoming movies.

“Male and female producers come to me, and they say, 'You know, Anna, it's only young men coming up showing [me] their portfolios,'” Serner said. “And it's like, Yeah, that's probably true. But if you want the best films, you should probably start looking for the women and not be so lazy, sitting and waiting for them, because otherwise, you won't get the best ones. Because otherwise, you will just have to get the ones [that know to show up], and that's not good enough.

“Then the producer gets really mad with me, actually. But that's the truth.”

Sweden produces far fewer films than the U.S.: Though SFI, a government-affiliated organization, is a significant source of financing, it greenlights only about 15 narrative films per year. But, like in the U.S., Swedish financial gatekeepers have also deflected responsibility for gender gaps in hiring. She said after the SFI announced in 2012 it was aggressively seeking female filmmakers, the qualified female filmmakers whom producers had previously said they could not locate began to materialize: “Suddenly, the producers and production companies found a lot of women.”

Part of the gender disparity problem, she said, is that women are discouraged from pursuing bigger creative roles starting in film school. Until they were specifically summoned, many filmmakers hadn’t considered that they could get funding. Additionally, producers who were previously inclined to put more trust in male directors began to work with female directors in the wake of SFI’s public appeal.

The institute doesn’t have a male or female quota, Serner said — individual commissioners decide which projects they like and then make the case for why those projects should receive funding. There aren’t separate male and female wallets at SFI, as it were; rather, the institute measures its gender ratio every month, and constantly keeps the targets in mind when making evaluations for new projects, maintaining a continuous vigil for unconscious bias.

“What [the SFI commissioners] do is that they usually come and are in love with a male project. … And they say, 'Oh, this is a fantastic project,” Serner said. “And then when you start digging into it, you realize it's usually not that fantastic. Usually no film project is that fantastic. ... So you start digging into that, and you realize [that] the male projects are usually not that good, and then you dig into the female projects the same way, and you realize they are not usually that bad. They actually start to become interesting.”

Combined, the public query for more film works by women, an increased scrutiny of all project proposals, and accountability found in the monthly data crunch have worked to achieve parity for SFI’s slate of films, she said.

In fact, SFI-backed female filmmakers have found remarkable success at the top film festivals, including winning two Crystal Bears at the prestigious Berlinale this year. Serner said, “When you look at this, you can say, 'Do we have maybe a problem with competence with male directors?'”

Solar Impulse completes long-delayed flight across the Pacific

by John Timmer

The first justified use of a selfie stick I'm aware of: Bertrand Piccard, high above the Pacific. (credit: Solar Impulse)

Last night, after over 60 hours in the air and months of work on the ground, Solar Impulse completed its crossing of the Pacific. The landing at Moffett Field completed the most challenging part of its round-the-world journey, one interrupted by a long layover in Hawaii that allowed the team to sort out issues with the craft's batteries.

Solar Impulse is attempting to complete the first fuel-free circumnavigation of the Earth. It started the journey last year, with pilots Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg completing legs that took the craft to Japan and then across the Pacific to Hawaii. Progress was slow, however, as the delicate aircraft has some very specific requirements in terms of wind and weather in order to take off and land safely. It also needs to complete the journey within the Northern Hemisphere's summer, or the on-board battery capacity would be insufficient to power it through the longer winter night.

Once in Hawaii, however, the team identified problems with overheating batteries that required a major overhaul. This put the completion of its journey on hold for the year. With the work completed and the longest day of the year about two months away, the team was ready to resume its journey.
