Google Alerts Brings Back Support for Feeds

by Alex Chitu (noreply@blogger.com)

popular shared this story from Google Operating System.

Two months ago, when Google Reader disappeared, Google Alerts dropped support for feeds. Now feeds are back and they look just like before. Feeds continue to include references to Google Reader.

"As you can see, you have the option within 'deliver to' to deliver the alert to a feed. After you click 'create alert', you will be taken to the manage Google Alerts page where you will find the RSS URL you can copy and paste into your preferred RSS reader," informs Search Engine Land. (Feeds actually use Atom, not RSS.)

It's not clear why this feature was removed, but I wouldn't mind to see Google Reader back online. Quietly brilliant.

Twilight sleep - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

by russiansledges
Twilight sleep (English translation of the German word Dämmerschlaf[1][2]) is an amnesic condition characterized by insensibility to pain without loss of consciousness, induced by an injection of morphine and scopolamine,[3] especially to relieve the pain of childbirth. This combination induces a semi-narcotic[4] state which produces the experience of childbirth without pain, or without the memory of pain

Daniel Okulitch to star in operatic version of Brokeback Mountain

by Michael

Daniel Okulitch in Dead Man Walking
Madrid's Teatro Real has confirmed that Canadian barihunk Daniel Okulitch will star in the world premiere of  Charles Wuorinen's operatic adaptation of Brokeback Mountain, based on the 1997 Annie Proulx's story of a cowboy love affair that became an Oscar-winning film. Okulitch will play the role of Ennis Del Mar, which was portrayed by Heath Ledger in the 2005 movie adaptation. American tenor will Tom Randle will play the Jake Gyllenhaal role of Jack Twist.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain
Although no exact date has been announced for the premiere, it is expected to open on January 28, 2014 and run through February 11th. We suspect that the music will be drastically different from the movie soundtrack by Gustavo Santaolalla, as Wuorinen writes in the 12-tone style. His previous opera was Haroun and the Sea of Stories, based on Salman Rushdie's novel. Santaolalla won the Academy Award for "Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score."

Guitar transcription of Gustavo Santaolalla's "Brokeback Mountain" music:

David Fry sings Wuorinen's "Never again the same"

Brokeback Mountain was originally commissioned for a 2013 premiere by Gerard Mortier while he was at the embattled New York City Opera. When he became the head of the Teatro Real, Mortier decided to revive the work and present it there. Annie Proulx has written the libretto and it will be directed by Dutch director Ivo van Hove.

Verizon's Plan To Turn the Web Into Pay-Per-View

by samzenpus
Russian Sledges

snydeq writes "InfoWorld's Bill Snyder writes of Verizon's diabolical plan to to charge websites for carrying their packets — a strategy that, if it wins out, will be the end of the Internet as we know it. 'Think of all the things that tick you off about cable TV. Along with brainless programming and crummy customer service, the very worst aspect of it is forced bundling. ... Now, imagine that the Internet worked that way. You'd hate it, of course. But that's the direction that Verizon, with the support of many wired and wireless carriers, would like to push the Web. That's not hypothetical. The country's No. 1 carrier is fighting in court to end the Federal Communications Commission's policy of Net neutrality, a move that would open the gates to a whole new — and wholly bad — economic model on the Web.'"

Death For 4 Men Convicted In Indian Gang Rape And Murder

Death For 4 Men Convicted In Indian Gang Rape And Murder

Outside the courthouse in New Delhi on Friday, demonstrators gathered to call for — and then celebrate — the death sentences handed down for four men convicted in a December gang rape and murder of a young woman.

Roberto Schmidt /AFP/Getty Images

The four men convicted for December's notorious gang rape and murder of a young woman in New Delhi, India, were given the death penalty on Friday.

"It took all of 90 seconds" for the judge to announce his decision and then leave the courtroom, NPR's Julie McCarthy reports from New Delhi. One of the four convicted men "shrieked and slumped," while outside a cheer went up when spectators heard the news, she adds.

After the judge signed the document condemning the men to death, Julie says, he broke his pen — "symbolizing the hope that he would not have to impose the death penalty again."

As NPR has previously reported, "the horrific crime stirred a national debate over the country's lax prosecution of crimes against women and became an international issue as well." There were protests across the country and the government was pressured into toughening the laws about violence against women and sexual assault.

Earlier this week, after the men's conviction, Julie spoke about how the judge "went to great lengths to describe the crime":

"He talked about how they lured this woman onto a bus. They turned off the lights. She believed she was on a normal bus; she wasn't at all. They pinned her down. They took turns raping her.

"They threw her off the bus naked. They stole all her belongings. And everyone was found equally guilty. So guilty on gang rape, guilty for murder, guilty for kidnapping and unnatural offenses, which really speaks to the brutality of this attack."

Last month, a juvenile defendant was also found guilty. He was given the maximum sentence for someone his age — three years in detention.

Another man accused in the case was found hanging in his jail cell back in March. While authorities have said he committed suicide, the man's family has alleged that foul play was involved in his death.

We'll have more about the men's sentencing later. They can appeal their cases, and death penalties must be confirmed by India's High Court before being carried out, The Associated Press says.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Announcements

Deities and mythological figures

Headings for individual deities and mythological figures (e.g., Thor, Hercules) should now be established in the name authority file using RDA instructions. The RDA heading will be valid for use as a subject heading.
Headings for groups of deities and mythological figures (e.g., Nymphs, the Furies) will continue to be established in LCSH because they cannot currently be established with RDA instructions. The heading God and headings of the type God (name of religion) (e.g., God (Christianity); God (Greek religion)) also continue to be established in LCSH.
The following workflows should be followed when inputting a name authority for an individual deity or mythological figure.
If the heading is needed for subject cataloging and an LCSH heading for the deity or mythological figure already exists, catalogers may continue to assign the existing LCSH heading. In that case, do not make a name authority record.
Optionally, catalogers may make a name authority for the deity or mythological figure if an LCSH heading already exists, but then must also make a proposal to cancel the existing LC subject heading. The proposal should be made through the Subject Proposal System; click the icon next to the heading and select the option “Propose cancelling this heading.”
If the heading is needed for a descriptive access point, it should be input into the name authority file. LCSH should be searched to determine whether the deity or mythological figure has already been established there. If so, a proposal to cancel the subject heading must also be made. The proposal should be made through the Subject Proposal System; click the icon next to the heading and select the option “Propose cancelling this heading.” NACO libraries who do not contribute SACO proposals may email policy@loc.gov to request that PSD make the cancellation proposal for them.
A project to transition all individual deity and mythological figure headings from LCSH to the name authority file will be conducted as resources are available. Catalogers are requested to refrain from unilaterally undertaking projects to convert the LC subject headings to name headings in a wholesale manner. Workload and staffing issues do not permit PSD to process the number of proposals that such projects would generate. SACO libraries wishing to undertake such a project may contact the Coop Section at saco@loc.gov and the request will be considered.
The SHM will be revised to reflect the new procedures.

Proposals for fictitious characters and individual named animals withdrawn

The following proposals for fictitious characters and individual named animals were withdrawn in accordance with the announcement entitled “Fictitious and legendary characters, and animals with proper names” in the Summary of Decisions for List 7 (2013). Headings for them may be added to the name authority file.
Knight, Rachel (Fictitious character)
Mørk, Carl (Fictitious character)
Nasrullah (Race horse)
Private Sarbi (Dog)

Headings for individual deities and mythological figures (e.g., Thor, Hercules) should now be established in the name authority file using RDA instructions. The RDA heading will be valid for use as a subject heading. Headings for groups of deities and mythological figures (e.g., Nymphs, the Furies) will continue to be established in LCSH because they cannot currently be established with RDA instructions. Pope Francis now has his own mini popemobile after getting a good deal on a used car that he plans to drive himself. Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Ciro Benedettini, says Francis accepted the 1984 Renault 4, donated for free by a priest in northern Italy who used it to visit poor parishioners. The four-door car, in papal white, is manual shift and has a new engine. Benedettini told The AP on Wednesday: "The pope intends to drive it."

Doctor Who's TARDIS spotted in 'new' Van Gogh painting

Storified by CBC News Community· Wed, Sep 11 2013 15:29:23

When it was announced on Monday that one of Vincent Van Gogh's paintings was recently found, Doctor Who fans around the world sat up and took notice as, what appears to be, a TARDIS was spotted in the background.

A TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space) is a time-travelling machine disguised as a British police box.
I h9 the Doctor Who fandom. They're all convinced that the TARDIS is in the newly discovered Van Gogh painting. http://twitter.com/TheMad_Artist/status/377225597111373824/photo/1Geoff Peterson

The painting Sunset at Montmajour, which depicts trees, bushes and sky in a rolling landscape, had spent decades languishing in an attic in Norway until a museum finally authenticated the artist's masterpiece.

However the subtle appearance of a small blue box in the upper left-hand corner of the painting fuelled the imagination of Whovians.
If you carefully in the back left corner of the recently discovered Van Gogh painting, there is a blue box- the TARDIS. Doctor Who is REALRebecca Scott Wolfe
At the risk of sounding like a nutter, has nobody noticed that the newly discovered Van Gogh painting HAS A FRICKING TARDIS IN IT?Holly Blades
The link between Van Gogh and the Time Lord comes from a tear-jerking episode of the show entitled Vincent and the Doctor. The Doctor and his faithful companion travel back in time to meet the painter.

I always cry at the Doctor Who episode of "Vincent And The Doctor" where they bring Van Gogh to a modern day art museumMiss Atomic Bomb
After being influenced by the time-travelling duo, the artist is inspired by their spaceship device and paints the TARDIS in his unique style.

Newly discovered Vincent Van Gogh painting "Sunset at Montmajour". Remember the episode of Doctor Who "Vincent and the Doctor", what if it really happened? Because that blue building in the back looks slightly like the TARDIS I'm just saying, maybe the Doctor is real. #DoctorWho #VincentVanGogh #TARDISthealexa85
And, of course, there were a few out there who felt that the object in question was a bit of a stretch of the imagination.
Sorry #Whovians but in Van Gogh's 'Sunset at Montmajour' it's not the Tardis, it's a blue building.Devon
What do you think of the new painting? Do you think the blue object looks like The Doctor's TARDIS?

@foodbros

Want to make historic recipes?  Or how about reading handwriting, converting measurements, recreating historic cooking implements, food photography, or writing and blogging?

300+ years of handwritten cookbooks with thousands of recipes from Chef Louis Szathmary’s culinary collection from Special Collections & University Archives are now online in DIY History, the newest transcription project from the University of Iowa Libraries.  Helpful people around the world are trying to puzzle out what the handwriting says.  But is that where it ends?  Unlike letters, diaries, or even menus, recipes are not done even what you can read what it says.  They are instructions just calling out to be tested to bring a slice of history back to life one piece of hardtack at a time.

Sound interesting?  Come to the first meeting and have a voice in determining what the group should be.

If  you can’t make the meeting but want to be in the loop, e-mail colleen-theisen @  uiowa dot edu to be added to the e-mail list.

University apologizes for censoring crypto prof over anti-NSA post

by Nate Anderson
Russian Sledges

"I am also sorry if I have raised in anyone’s mind a question as to my commitment to academic freedom."

Green's original post.

Andrew Douglas, interim dean of the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, has apologized publicly today for asking one of his cryptography professors to remove a blog post critical of the National Security Agency's (NSA) newly revealed mass spying programs.

Matthew Green.

Douglas contacted professor Matthew Green yesterday, asking him to pull the mirrored copy of his "On the NSA" blog post from university servers on the grounds that it "contained a link or links to classified material and also used the NSA logo," according to a Johns Hopkins statement released yesterday afternoon.

This was a strange request on its face—there's nothing illegal about linking to classified information published by news organizations, nor is there anything illegal about using the NSA's logo in a post about the NSA. (Some restrictions on the NSA logo do exist as a matter of law, but these are limited to the logo's use in a way "reasonably calculated to convey the impression that such use is approved, endorsed, or authorized by the National Security Agency." Green's hypercritical post was in no danger of crossing this threshold.)

How Car Dealership Lobbyists Successfully Banned Tesla Motors From Texas

by Soulskill
Russian Sledges

via firehose

Funksaw writes "In a political op-ed on his blog, long time Slashdot reader and contributor Brian Boyko (the guy who did that animated Windows 8 video) — now a candidate for state representative — explains how lobbyists from car dealerships successfully banned Tesla Motors from selling cars in Texas. From the article: 'Tesla Motors doesn't just present a case study of why a lack of campaign finance reform blocks meaningful reform on the issues that Democrats care about, like climate change and health care. A lack of campaign finance reform blocks reforms on both the Left and the Right. Here's the big elephant in the room I'd like to point out to all the "elephants" in the room: With a Republican-controlled legislature, a Republican executive, and many conservatives in our judiciary, why the hell don't we have free markets in Texas? Isn't it the very core of economic-conservative theory that the invisible hand of the free market determines who gets what resources? Doesn't the free market have the ability to direct resources to where they can most efficiently be used? I'm not saying the conservatives are right in these assumptions; but I am saying that our broken campaign finance system makes a mockery of them.'"
