San Francisco woman allegedly assaulted and robbed for wearing Google Glass

by Chris Welch

A San Francisco woman was allegedly attacked and robbed for wearing Google Glass in a bar on Friday night. Sarah Slocum told local CBS affiliate KPIX that as she was demonstrating Google's device for another patron, two women angrily confronted her. Soon after, a man at the bar tore Glass off of her face, though she later retrieved the $1,500 Explorer Edition unit. According to Slocum, video footage taken with Glass shows the incident and the perpetrator's face. Unfortunately, her smartphone, purse, and wallet were also stolen during the ordeal — apparently by the thief's friends — and those items haven't yet turned up. "I got verbally and physically assaulted and robbed because of some wanker Google Glass haters," she later wrote on Facebook. One of the assailant's friends accused Slocum (and presumably other Glass users) of "destroying the city," according to San Francisco Chronicle report.

Exactly what led up to the violence is a bit unclear. KPIX5 spoke to numerous witnesses who were at Molotov's bar on Friday; they said Slocum was "very friendly" and that several people were genuinely interested in seeing Glass firsthand. But one man — who offered only his first name — seemed to imply that Slocum should have known better. "Brian" described Molotov's typical clientele as "not tech-oriented" and said the dive is "one of the more punk rock bars in the city." "It's not Google Glass country," he told reporter Joe Vazquez. Brian was quick to admit that no one had any right to victimize Slocum for the simple act of wearing Glass, but said "a level of tact in that type of establishment might have behooved her."

Another witness said that Slocum was "running around very excited" as closing time approached. "I think everybody was just upset that she would be recording outside of a bar this late with obviously embarrassing behavior going on around her, and just rather insulted that someone thinks it's OK to record them the entire time they're in public." Just last week, Google sought to get in front of the Glass etiquette debate with a list of best practices for using the device. Google says that Explorers shouldn't "wear it and expect to be ignored," but obviously Slocum got more than she bargained for in that respect. Slocum said she has since turned her video evidence over to local police, and at least one employee on the Google Glass team has reached out to her for more details.

"I work at this library. And before that, I was coming here for twenty years. It’s my favorite place in the world. As many people know, the main reading room of this library is supported by seven floors of books, which contain one of the greatest research collections in the world. Recently, the library administration has decided to rip out this collection, send the books to New Jersey, and use the space for a lending library. As part of the consolidation, they are going to close down the Mid-Manhattan Library Branch as well as the Science, Industry, and Business Library. When everything is finished, one of the greatest research libraries in the world will become a glorified internet cafe. Now read that back to me."

George W. Bush plans on putting artwork revealed by hacker on display

George W. Bush's private experiments with art became embarrassingly public last year when hacker Guccifer broke into the Bush family's personal data and managed to unearth some of the former president's awkward bathroom self portraits. Now, with Guccifer apparently behind bars, Bush is looking to put a positive face on his hobby by unveiling it in an art exhibition.

The show will be called The Art of Leadership: A President's Personal Diplomacy, and will showcase more than two dozen portraits painted by the president, along with artifacts and photos from his presidency. The exhibition will open in April, and, according to the George W. Bush Institute, "will explore the relationships that President George W. Bush forged with world leaders to shape international policy and advance American interests abroad." Presumably, that means less nudity.

Running back leaves combine, claims he's 'following God'

One NFL hopeful is taking a different approach to the league, claiming God told him to leave the combine.

Prospective NFL players are doing everything they can to be noticed at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, but one player has removed himself from the event.

San Diego State running back Adam Muema left citing "religious reasons," claiming he was told by God that if he elected not to work out he would ultimately play for the Seattle Seahawksaccording to a report from UT San Diego.

Muema will be available during San Diego State's Pro Day in March and teams will not see the projected mid-round running back before that time. He believes he's received a message, but it's hard to see where he'll slot in on a team already boasting Marshawn Lynch and 2013 second-round pick Christine Michael.

The report links Muema to "Lord Ray-El" a man claiming to be the second coming of Christ.

So this is what it feels like when bears cry.

The 2014 Winter Olympics are over and we're all crying a little inside. One bear is taking it a little harder than most and was standing in the middle of the stadium to show it.

Awwwww! We'll miss you too Sochi. From your swelling vistas to double toilets, your roaming dogs and soaring athletic competition. There's a little Sochi in all of us now and we have you to thank, Winter Olympics.

Heartwarming or totally creepy? We're going with the latter. Coincidentally this is the EXACT same thing that happens when you put Ten by Pearl Jam in a Teddy Ruxpin, except the fluid is clear, smells like industrial lubricant and accompanied by a vague scent of an impending electrical fire .

Don't ask us how we know that.

Inside the Once Secret 'Palace' of Viktor Yanukovich

by Mark Byrnes
Russian Sledges

via saucie

With former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich on the run, curious citizens and journalists treated themselves to a tour of his luxurious and now vacant residence near Kiev.

Located in Novi Petrivtsi (an hour drive from the capital), the once heavily secured, 345-acre estate was opened by his detractors over the weekend. Visitors discovered a golf course, helicopter pad, live animals, statues, and a five-floor mansion.

Yanukovich has a working-class background. So the opulence of his new digs took visitors by surprise. One man, while touring the grounds, told Reuters, "we did not expect anything like this," adding, "it really is too much for one person. It's very emotional when you see something like this."

Another said, "a normal person doesn't build this sort of stuff."

Yanukovich bought the first piece of land on what became his massive estate in 2010, turning it into a secret palace of sorts that only family and close friends (as well as thousands of security guards, according to locals) were allowed to enter.

An arrest warrant was issued for mass murder against the fugitive president this morning by Ukrainian authorities.

Male Pundits Find Yulia Tymoshenko Sexually Threatening

by Allie Jones

Associated Press

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was released from jail on Saturday, after ousted president Viktor Yanukovich fled Kiev. The opposition leader has announced that she will run for president, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel has already welcomed her back to the public stage. (Tymoshenko supports integrating Ukraine into the European Union.) But some fear her return to politics, claiming she's just as corrupt as Yanukovich. Edward Lucas, a senior editor at The Economist, insists, "The truth is that her determination is terrifying. Nobody and nothing gets in her way. When she needs to, she is prepared to use her undeniable sexual magnetism."

In the same Daily Mail column, Lucas warns, "don't be fooled by [Tymoshenko's] angelic looks." He continues, "I have interviewed her many times. Her body language, eyes, coquettish tosses of the head and cooing tones are almost hypnotic. But she is also capable of explosive anger. I have seen her shriek and curse in terrifying eruptions of rage: the kitten turns into a tigress." Lucas uses almost every sexist cliche imaginable about powerful women in an attempt to discredit her. According to him, Tymoshenko "believes in horoscopes and psychics," is "prone to irrational, often self-aggrandising flights of fancy" and can't work in a team. "Aides and colleagues are expected to guess what she wants and do it. If they get it wrong, she erupts," he writes. She apparently even uses her womanhood to scare men:

An ambassador once told me that a two-hour journey he spent in her sound-proofed, tinted-window limousine was the most sexually threatening experience of his life.

Lucas isn't the only one to come up with these criticisms, though his column is the most egregious example. The Daily Beast's Christopher Dickey agrees that Tymoshenko is "no angel." He argues, "there’s no doubt that the fire of a hugely ambitious politician still burns hot behind the iconic face and hair of the fairy tale princess."

Tymoshenko didn't always have her signature blonde hair folded into halo braids — before she became prime minister, she was brunette. But in consultation with a PR firm, Tymoshenko developed her look to represent the softer, more feminine Urkranian woman. Her hairdo alludes to patriotism and sainthood. It was a calculated political move, sure, but one she felt she had to make to succeed as a woman in Ukraine's political sphere. As Dickey explains, she was a "hard-bitten ice queen" before the transformation. Welcome to 2014, where female leaders are either frigid or sexually dangerous.

The Book Industry Is So Scared of Amazon, No One Will Talk on the Record

by Laura Bennett

In 1995, in Chicago, Bezos manned an Amazon booth at the annual conclave of the publishing industry, which is now called BookExpo America. Roger Doeren, from a Kansas City store called Rainy Day Books, was stopped short by Amazon’s sign: “Earth’s Biggest Bookstore.” Approaching Bezos, he asked, “Where is Earth’s biggest bookstore?”

“Cyberspace,” Bezos replied.

“We started a Web site last year. Who are your suppliers?”

“Ingram, and Baker & Taylor.”

“Ours, too. What’s your database?”

“ ‘Books in Print.’ ”

“Ours, too. So what makes you Earth’s biggest?”

“We have the most affiliate links”—a form of online advertising.

Doeren considered this, then asked, “What’s your business model?”

Bezos said that Amazon intended to sell books as a way of gathering data on affluent, educated shoppers. The books would be priced close to cost, in order to increase sales volume. After collecting data on millions of customers, Amazon could figure out how to sell everything else dirt cheap on the Internet. (Amazon says that its original business plan “contemplated only books.”)

Afterward, Doeren told his partner at Rainy Day Books, Vivien Jennings, “I just met the world’s biggest snake-oil salesman. It’s going to be really bad for books.”

Canvas Wall Tents

by Christina Nellemann

tw: "glamping"

The basic canvas wall tent, used by outdoor enthusiasts and the military for hundreds of years, can be turned into more than a tent with the simple addition of a wooden platform. My family has some property in a beautiful meadow with mountain views and we are looking to put up a canvas wall tent on a wooden floor to use for guest camping and enjoying the summer nights. Research for these tents has turned up some fantastic photos of what can be created with these portable but heavy duty structures.

deck_tent12big

Wall tents are different than tipis and in that they have four sides and a peaked roof, much like a tiny house. Canvas wall tents have been used by the military as early at 1740 and were used extensively in the American Civil War. Hunters and trappers in the 1800′s used wall tents while on the frontier and they are still used today as shelters in refugee camps and by soldiers in Iraq.

Canvas wall tents range in size from about 8-10 feet wide and 10-20 feet long. They can be supported with a simple wood frame, steel poles or traditional timber poles cut down on site. The walls are typically 5-6 feet high. Some canvas tents are large enough to contain a wood burning stove and the canvas roof can include a hole for a stove pipe. Furniture, carpets and even wall hangings can be used for interior decoration.

Canvas wall tents can actually be mounted to a hard surface deck. This keeps the tent from being blown away and damaged in the wind and also keeps out unwanted outdoor critters. These types of tents are called deck tents and can be secured even further with cable systems that tie the tent down to the deck.

Because of their sturdy construction and ability to let in fresh air while protecting campers from the elements, many canvas wall tents have become popular for glamping enthusiasts. The tents can be enjoyed in the summer and fall and then packed up and put away when winter arrives.
