by Ricardo de Oliveira

Kinect 2.0 Will Start Watching Your Blood Next Year

by Nathan Grayson

By Nathan Grayson on May 25th, 2013 at 11:00 am.

It can also levitate at will.

So Microsoft suggested it in an exceedingly casual, nonspecific manner, so shall it be. Xbox One’s infinitely more sensitive (it cries during movies and everything) Kinect is headed to PC as well, and it’ll come with a new SDK in tow. One caveat, though: Microsoft really isn’t expecting you to use it for gaming. Case in point: “Just as the new Kinect sensor will bring opportunities for revolutionizing gaming and entertainment, the new Kinect for Windows sensor will revolutionize computing experiences.” This one, then, will be targeted toward businesses and touch-free apps. Honestly, though, that’s not a huge change from Kinect’s first go-’round in our icy cool land of cybertronic future monoliths. What I’m worried about is the “next-gen” edition’s ability to be keenly aware of, well, everything. If the console version’s a useless heap of Orwellian scrap when not plugged into an Xbox, what’s to stop the PC one from pitching a fit unless it’s hooked up to a Windows 8 machine?

I’ve mailed Microsoft about the possibility, but they’ve yet to reply. In the meantime, it’s worth noting that – despite all the associated baggage, both confirmed and speculated – Kinect One/2.0/a-skiddly-diddly-doo offers some pretty nice goodies for all the trouble. Thanks to the power of photons and HD hypercolor sightomancy, it’s able to “recognize precise motions and details, such as slight wrist rotation, body position, and even the wrinkles in your clothes.” It’s also been reconfigured to function in spaces smaller than the average ballroom or indoor jousting arena, which is basically a godsend.

Improved skeletal tracking’s another biggie, and that allows the new Kinect to do things like differentiate between six people at once. Magic Microsoft ball, what should we use this feature for? Multi-person retail “experiences,” you say? Well, it’s not like cameras aren’t in every public space already anyway. The next generation of advergaming is right around the corner! Lastly, active infrared allows Kinect to see in just about any sort of lighting (or lack thereof), making it infinitely less finicky.

The new Kinect is coming to PC sometime next year. Hopefully hackers will see these new features as an expanded canvas for their madness and go wild. But if not? Well, at least you’ll be able to give the best Power Point presentation ever.

WoGF Review: Doomsday Book by Connie Willis

by Brett72
Albener Pessoa

The two main characters of the Doomsday Book are Kivrin, a graduate student, and Mr. Dunworthy, a university professor. Kivrin has always wanted to travel to the Middle Ages, but that time period is off-limits due to the danger posed. An ambitious professor seizes his chance during Christmas break, when he is functioning as acting head of the department, opens the Middle Ages and organizes a trip to send Kivrin to England in 1320. Mr. Dunworthy, an expert in the 20th century and Kivrin's former mentor, opposes the trip to no avail. As soon as Kivrin arrives in the past she comes down with a mysterious illness. Back in the 22nd century the tech working the trip falls ill with a similar sickness. The sickness spreads and soon becomes an epidemic, then a pandemic.

SurveyMonkey recebe investimento do Google e continua apostando no Brasil

by Nick Ellis

In Brief: May Miscellany

by Armin

May Miscellany

Haven't done this round-up in a while and I could use a little break from all this heavy-duty identity critiquing. So here are some interesting stories.

1. 2013 Logo Trends

May Miscellany

The 2013 Logo Trend report from Logo Lounge covers some of the stuff we've loved to hate over the past year, including the "Crossed" (shown above) that isn't just pretty according to LL: "The X formed by these elements signifies a level of heritage normally associated with a pair of crossed swords. It's a technique that lifts the regal nature of the client it represents and implies a certain sophistication even if it's a pair of crossed plungers." Other interesting trends are "Eyelet", "Written" and "Line Craft".

Thanks to James I. Bowie for the tip.

2. University of New Hampshire Presentation

April Miscellany

The University of New Hampshire has been working with Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv to redesign their identity and, in a strange case of public sharing, they have released (sort of) a taping of Tom Geismar and Sagi Haviv presenting three identity contenders. The video can be watched on vimeo using "unhwildcats2013" as the password. For further reading, this story has all the sordid details, including C&G&H's $100,000-fee. I wonder if the presentation was taped so that when the eventual shit hits the fan and students complain about the logo change and due process they can show them this.

Update 8:55 am: Ah, too bad, they have removed the video altogether. I wish they would have kept it, it was an interesting look at the process. Sorry to all the late risers who missed it.

Thanks to Jonathan Steinberg for the tip.

3. New Handicap Symbol

Since last year, a group of academics at Gordon College, a small Christian institution in eastern Massachusetts, led by Brian Glenney (shown in video above) have been promoting a more active handicap symbol to replace the helpless-looking symbol we see everyday. This story covers how this effort might soon get a big boost as the New York mayor's Office for People With Disabilities "plans this summer to begin putting the new logo all over the nation's largest city," and a variation of the symbol — with arm stretched out, hailing — will be used on a new line of taxis designed to accommodate people with disabilities.

Thanks to Rebecca Knowe for the tip.

Wayland preview

by eben

Update: Daniel’s blog post here provides some more info, including how to install the technology preview on Raspbian today. And Pekka’s blog post here has some very detailed technical information on the implementation of the Weston backend.

If you’re familiar with the Raspberry Pi desktop experience, you’ll have noticed that windows on the desktop can be a bit slower to move around than you’re used to on your PC or laptop. This is because X, the windowing software (or composition protocol) that we use, is not optimised to use the graphics core of the BCM2835, the chip at the heart of the Raspberry Pi. All the work is done by the ARM processor instead, which slows things down and leaves the graphics core twiddling its thumbs. That graphics core is extremely powerful, so we’re working on putting it to good use to fix the issue.

We’ve made the decision to bypass X completely. Over the past few months we’ve been working with our friends at Collabora to implement the open-source Wayland composition protocol on top of the BCM2835 hardware video scaler (HVS). The HVS is a very powerful piece of hardware, with a scaling throughput of 500 megapixels per second and blending throughput of 1 gigapixel per second. It runs independently of the OpenGL ES hardware, so we can continue to render 3d graphics at the full, very fast rate, even while compositing.

Wayland composited desktop with XWayland and native applications.

In comparison to our current X11 desktop environment, Wayland frees the ARM from the burden of stitching together the top level of the composition hierarchy, and allows us to provide some neat features, including non-rectangular windows, fades for windows which don’t have input focus and an Exposé-like scaled window browser (the sort of thing that Mac users will be familiar with). Legacy X applications can still be supported using XWayland. Check out this video from Collabora to see these features in action, and to compare the current state of affairs with the Wayland future. Those non-rectangular shapes? They’re also windows.

We’re still working to improve performance and memory consumption, and don’t expect to be able to replace X11 as our default desktop environment until later in the year, but we will be including a technology preview in our next Raspbian release. Until then, this post on Collabora’s website gives some more background.

As with PyPy, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has funded this work on Wayland; it’s one of the ways we are trying to give back to the open-source community. Obviously, much of the work on this particular project is Raspberry Pi specific, but there’s a large portion of what’s being done, particularly around XWayland and some of the generic effects in Weston, that can be reused on many other platforms.

We’re looking forward to being able to push out the full release in the next few months. We hope you like the look of it!

The economy that is Dubai (a different kind of driverless car)

by Tyler Cowen

Thousands of the finest automobiles ever made are now being abandoned every year since Dubai’s financial meltdown, left by expatriates and locals alike who flee in a hurry because they face crippling debts. With big loans to repay to the banks (unpaid debt or even bouncing a cheque is a criminal offence in Dubai), the panicked car owners make their way to the airport at top speeds and leave their vehicles in the car park, hopping on the next flight out of there, never to return…

Ferraris, Porsches, BMWs, Mercedes are regularly abandoned at the car park of Dubai International Airport, some with loan documents and apology notes simply left on the windscreen and in some cases with the keys still in the ignition.

…Residents complain about the unsightly vehicles hogging parking spaces at the airport and sitting slumped outside their fancy yacht clubs– it’s like, so not a good look.

There is more here, hat tip goes @jscarantino.  By the way, a 19-year-old in Romania may have just made driverless cars significantly cheaper.

Unwittingly Participating in the Panopticon

by Jamais Cascio

This does not seem like a good combination:

  1. The FBI wants (has?) backdoors to monitor Skype (along with other Internet telephony apps); tellingly, there's already concern that such backdoors are open to non-FBI intruders.

  2. The soon-to-arrive XBox One has Skype built-in, making use of the video camera on the Kinect.

  3. Said Kinect is required, and cannot be disconnected.

  4. And the XBox One will need to have regular (daily) Internet access, meaning that most people will just leave it connected to their home broadband.

Anyone want to place a wager on how many months it will be after the XBox One is released before there's a "XBox Spying" scandal?
