“By the flames,” the princess shouted, removing her helm, “I have found you at long last.”
The gorgon shrieked in horror and awkwardly slithered out of sight, “NO! You must not look! I shall turn you to stone, I am cursed!”
“Please! don’t go! Listen to me for once!”
“I am wretched!” the monster howled, sinking to the ground and weeping openly, poison green tears streaming down her scaly face.
“Then we shall be wretched together,” the princess demanded, removing her glasses, snapping them in half, and throwing them to the ground.
“Is that enough?” the scaly creature whispered hopefully, “And… c-could you use the trash bin please?”
The combined laughter was equal parts barely expressible joy, longing fulfilled, and ugly sobbing as the two clung to each other in an embrace the gods themselves would find trouble in breaking.

Mike Huckabee threatens actual war on women … with troops to stop abortions
If Mike Huckabee becomes president, he will consider using all available resources to stop abortions in the US – including a domestic military intervention.
At a succession of campaign stops this week, the former Arkansas governor said he would violate a landmark supreme court ruling to accomplish his goal of ending abortion.
“I will not pretend there is nothing we can do to stop this,” Huckabee said at one stop in Iowa.
The Rolling Stone reporter Matt Taibbi pressed Huckabee at the next campaign stop, asking if he would use the national guard or the FBI to stop abortions. Huckabee responded: “We’ll see, if I get to be president.”
He then said he would use all resources available to stop abortions if he were to reach the White House.
On Saturday, the Huckabee campaign did not respond to a request for details of exactly how he would use domestic military forces and law enforcement to stop abortions.
But during press questions at the campaign stop, Huckabee said he would invoke the fifth and 14th amendments to protect what he believes to be humans. The fifth amendment protects against trial without jury and ensures the due process of law; the 14th addresses citizenship and the rights of citizens.
Huckabee also defended the potential move by exaggerating how common it is for presidents to violate a supreme court ruling.
Jesse Choper, professor emeritus of public law at the University of California-Berkeley, told the Topeka Capital-Journal that presidents who oppose supreme court rulings generally favor noncompliance instead of aggressive action – and said even that was a rarity.
“I think he’d better more carefully examine what he’s saying, because it is totally unprecedented,” Choper said of Huckabee.
As expected, reproductive rights advocates criticized Huckabee’s comments.
Lizz Winstead, co-creator of The Daily Show and a founder of Lady Parts Justice, said: “Mike Huckabee wants to drive a tank into your vagina, so that’s a thing.”
“Well, we did say they’d stop at nothing,” tweeted Planned Parenthood, which Republicans are trying to defund, again.
A reprise: Radical Empathy & Fierce Kindness
Is not the same as forgiveness, tolerance or being a doormat. It’s not letting people get a free pass.
It’s realising that even arseholes are scared. It’s realising that the worst criminals in history still had people who loved them. It’s realising your enemy is probably just doing the best they can in a world that makes no sense. (That’s why, incidentally, they’re adherents tof toxic ideologies and practices, andrefuse to interrogate them; such things provide them with fucking security blankets. They give them a sense of agency.)We have to be kind to each other, even if it’s thrown back in our faces. Why? Because we’re all here together, for such a terribly short time, and contrary to popular belief WE. ALL. NEED. HELP.
All of Nietzsche’s talk of Monsters, and Abysses? That’s what he was saying. Fuck the syphilis story. He had a nervous breakdown when he witnessed a horse get beaten to death in the middle of the street.
He signed his letters Dionysos and “the crucified one” - why?Because he realised we are all that horse, and also the people beating it.
Please, be kind. It’s the only way anything will change permanently. Be angry, rise up all you need to, but be kind to each other as you do it.
I know it’s hard, nearly impossible in fact, but it’s the only way we’re going to survive - as a species and as you and your friends and family. I’m not inherently kind, not at all. But all the good things I ever had, and have? I got them by being kind, by letting the bullshit flow past, letting the crap of the world pass by and focusing on the importance of trying my best to help other people, as they helped me.
Call me a hippy if you want - it’s not true. I’m a grumpy bastard who really would rather be a misanthrope. Maybe I can’t be kind to everyone, but I’m going to be kind to those I can be. And if they ask me why, I tell them this: Because it’s infinitely preferable to the alternative.
Because it’s not a war, it’s a rescue mission. It’s descending into the dark to find light that you can share with others, to help them learn how to heal and be whole. If I have to bleed to do it, if I have to pour my heart out with words of storm and fury, fire and ice and black bird’s carrion calls, so fucking be it.
And you’re going to help. You have already. So many of you have already, in small unnoticed ways, but you have and will
Consider this a reminder then. Consider this a voice in your ear. An act of memory.

HEEERE’S NECKBEARD
"When I was a freshman, my sister was in eighth grade. There was a boy in two of her periods who..."
One day, in third period, after being rejected several times, he said; “I have a gun in my locker. If you don’t say yes, I am going to shoot you in seventh.”
She refused again, but right after class she went to the principal’s office and told them what happened. They searched his locker and there was a gun in his backpack.
When he was arrested, some of my sister’s friends (some female, even) told her that she was selfish for saying no so many times. That because of her, the entire school was in jeopardy. That it wouldn’t have killed her to say yes and give it a try, but because she was so mean to him, he lost his temper. Many of her male friends said it was “girls like her” that made all women seem like cockteases.
Wouldn’t have killed her to say yes? If a man is willing to shoot someone for saying no, what happens to the poor soul who says yes? What happens the first time they disagree? What happens the first time she says she doesn’t want to have sex? That she isn’t in the mood? When they break up?
Years later, when I was a senior, I was the only girl in my Criminal Justice class. The teacher, who used to be a sergeant in the police force, told us a story of something that had happened to a girl he knew when she was in high school. There was a guy who obviously had a crush on her and he made her uncomfortable. One day he finally gathered up the courage to ask her out, and she said no.
The next day, during an assembly, he pulled a gun on her in front of everyone and threatened to kill her if she didn’t date him.
He was tackled to the ground and the gun was taken from him. When my teacher asked the class who was at fault for the crime, I was the only person who said the boy was. All the other kids in the class (who were all boys) said that the girl was, that if she had said yes he would’ve never lost it and brought a gun and tried to kill her. When my teacher said that they were wrong and that this is what is wrong with society, that whenever a white boy commits a crime it’s someone else’s fault (music, television, video games, the victim) one boy raised his hand and literally said; “But if someone were to punch me and I punched him back, who is at fault for the fight? He is, not me. It’s self-defence. She started it, so anything that happens to her is in reaction to her actions .It’s simple cause and effect.”
Even though he spent the rest of the calss period ripping into the boys and saying that you are always responsible for your own actions, and that women are allowed to say no and do not have to date them, they left class laughing about how idiotic he was and that he clearly had no idea how much it hurt to be rejected.
So now we have a new school shooting, based solely on the fact some guy couldn’t get laid, and I see men, boys, applaudin him, or if they’re not applauding him, they’re laying blame on women as a whole. Just like my sister’s friends did. Just like the boys in my Criminal Justice class did.
This isn’t something that’s rare. This isn’t something that never happens, or that a select group of men feel as if they are so entitled to women that saying no is not only the worst possible thing a woman can do, but is considered a form of “defence” when they commit a crime upon them (whether it be rape or murder-as-a-reaction-towards-rejection).
Girls are being killed for saying no to prom invites. Girls are being killed for saying no to men. They are creating an atmosphere where women are too scared to say no, and the worst part is? They are doing it intentionally. They want society to be that way, they want women to say yes entirely out of fear. Even the boys and men who aren’t showing up to schools with guns are saying; “Well, you know, I wouldn’t do that, but you have to admit that if she had just said yes …”
If you are a man and you defend this guys’ actions or try to find an excuse for it, or you denounce what really happened, or in any way lay blame on women, every girl you know, every woman you love, has just now thought to themselves that you might lose your shit and kill them someday for saying no. You have just lost their trust. And you know what? You deserve to lose it.”

If you reject a man and he becomes violent, it’s your own fault for not giving him a chance. If you date him and he becomes violent, it’s your own fault for choosing to date an asshole.
Either way, if you’re a woman, everything men do is your fault.
That’s literally what these douchebags are saying, but somehow male privilege doesn’t exist.

Warren Buffett’s quiet, incredibly effective crusade to help women get IUDs

The use of long-lasting and highly-effective intrauterine devices is on the rise in the United States, and much of the increase is due to the quiet efforts of Warren Buffett, the third-richest man in the world.
Once deemed unsafe, IUDs are gaining popularity among women as a method of contraception that is convenient, reversible, and 99% effective. According to the CDC, the bulk of the increase happened very recently. From 2006-2010 to 2011-2013, the number of women aged 15-44 who used IUDs rose by a stunning 83%.
The T-shaped devices can either made of copper or contain certain hormones; when inserted into the uterus, they create an inhospitable environment for sperm.
Buffett has been quietly channeling money into the development of IUDs for the past decade, Bloomberg Businessweek reported in a cover story this week. While it’s no secret that the mogul’s Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation is a major funder of reproductive health efforts, his influence over the rising popularity of this particular form of birth control had largely gone unnoticed.
The New York Times reported earlier this month on the stunning success of a Colorado program designed to prevent teenage pregnancies. Thanks to free IUDs and hormonal implants, teenage births fell by 40% between 2009 to 2013, and abortions by teens fell by 42%. Karen Weise reports in Businessweek that the Buffett Foundation poured $50 million into the effort between 2008 and 2013.
The foundation is also involved in several other birth control initiatives, for the most part anonymously. One is a landmark study of nearly 10,000 women in St. Louis that found 56% of women chose IUDs when given the option to chose a free contraceptive. Buffett’s funding was also crucial in the development of a lower-cost IUD, called the Liletta.

Star Trek's Uhura to fly NASA mission aged 82 - three months after having a stroke
ThePrettiestOneHead canon:
This is totally a first contact mission. We're showing the aliens one of the most awesome humans we have.
The actress who played Lt Uhura in Star Trek is to blast off on a mission for US space agency NASA aged 82 - and three months after suffering a stroke.
Nichelle Nichols, who has been an ambassador for NASA since portraying the groundbreaking character in the 1960s, will fly on the SOFIA space telescope in September.
While the telescope - housed in a specially converted Boeing 747 - doesn't quite go to the final frontier, it makes it as high as the stratosphere, around 50,000 above the Earth.
Ms Nichols revealed her daring mission during an 'Ask Me Anything' session on social forum website Reddit.
She said: "SOFIA does not, sadly, fly into space. It's an airborne observatory, a massive telescope mounted inside a 747 flying as high as is possible. I was on a similar flight, the first airborn observatory, back in 1977.
"It's an amazing experience, you get a totally different perspective than from earth.
"I do hope someone gets some great pictures."
Her visit to the airborne observatory will come just three months after she was hospitalised after suffering a mild stroke.

I’m for things that make life worth living. I want people to have lives they love living. I celebrate empowerment.
I’m against hate-mongering, stupidity, ignorance, rabble-rousing, lying, and bullshit. And I will speak out against that kind of bullshit because silence equals death. I’ve paid the price of silence, more than once. I’ve paid the price of not taking a stand, more than once. I’m done with that.

It’s funny how there are guys on message boards complaining about Spy, going on about how we’re all just supposed to believe that someone like Melissa McCarthy could be a successful agent and even, god forbid, get the guy?
Like, as women we’ve had decades of being asked to believe that slubby men with poor hygiene can win the hearts of supermodels and painfully average ‘everyman’ types can save the day with no training and very little effort.
Meanwhile, Spy sets up the idea that Susan Cooper is a very talented and capable agent whose lack of confidence has landed her in a desk job. Who, when asked to, steps up and tries her hardest to save the day. Only a dickhead would complain about being asked to believe that story.
I’m not implying that if you don’t like Spy then you’re a bad person or some kind of misogynist, but if you don’t like it for the reason listed above then. Yeah. You might be a dickhead.
Hello. I just wanted to politely inform you, that there are more whites that are killed by police than blacks and besides that, there are people of all races, they just aren't broadcasted. #AllLivesMatter
ThePrettiestOnehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aversive_racism
Aversive racism was coined by Joel Kovel to describe the subtle racial behaviors of any ethnic or racial group who rationalize their aversion to a particular group by appeal to rules or stereotypes. (Dovidio & Gaertner, p. 62)[1] People who behave in an aversively racial way may profess egalitarian beliefs, and will often deny their racially motivated behavior; nevertheless they change their behavior when dealing with a member of a minority group. The motivation for the change is thought to be implicit or subconscious. Though Kovel coined the term, most of the research has been done by John F. Dovidio and Samuel L. Gaertn.
Dear lillypadd: YOU. ARE. A. RACIST.

It doesn’t matter if your racism is borne of aggressively willful ignorance, or if it’s more aversive in nature. The fact that you are comfortable enough in your learned, self-serving ignorance that you can stroll over to my inbox to deposit your “polite” micro-aggressions and uninformed racism does not excuse or diminish your racism - at all
And I’m Black, so no, you won’t get an “ignoracist” hall pass from me, and I do not believe in “too young to know better” hall passes either, and finally, being a WhiteLiberal™ who voted for Obama & has a “Black friend” or dated someone Black, etc, doesn’t automatically make you or anyone else any less racist
Sorry, but my B-Log is not a soft landing spot for White fragility
The fact is, despite being only 13 percent of America’s population, Black people are 21 times more likely to be shot by the police…even if we are completely unarmed
So dear White people who are overcome with the irresistible urge to regurgitate #AllLivesMatter whenever you see #BlackLivesMatter……………………..please go away and be an aversive racist somewhere else - until you take the red pill and wake tf up from your cozy little pod in the #AllLivesMatter Matrix, this ain’t the blog for you

If someone asks “why did they have to be gay?” but never asks “why did they have to be straight?”, they have some homophobia to get over.
News in Brief: Black Man Bids Tearful Goodbye To Family Before Daily Commute
MILWAUKEE—Frequently choking back tears, African-American computer technician Michael Shaw bid an emotional goodbye to his wife and 6-year-old son before making his morning commute Thursday, sources confirmed. “I don’t know when or if I’ll see you guys next, so I just want you to know how much I love you,” Shaw said, his voice breaking as he prepared to embark on the 25-minute trip, including a stop at a Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru, from which he might not return. “Kevin, you take care of Mommy. Whatever might happen before I get to the office, you have to be strong, okay?” According to sources, Shaw then grabbed his briefcase and his car keys and took one last look over his shoulder before opening the front door and walking down the lawn to the driveway.
