eevee-morgan:

autism is widely underdiagnosed in girls because autistic women tend to present as quiet and reserved, which is just how women are supposed to be.

personality disorders are underdiagnosed in men because they tend to present more explosively and involve more narcissistic behaviours, which is just how men are supposed to be.

sexism isn’t good for anyone. don’t be fooled.

Well Played, Lupita Nyong’o in House of Herrera

Disney's "Queen Of Katwe" Gala Screening At The Toronto Film Festival
Lupita is in Toronto promoting Queen of Katwe, which is getting good reviews and apparently got a standing ovation at TIFF (its trailer also totally made me well up). Frankly, I would like to give a standing ovation to this whole look. She just looks totally fantastic here; as far as I am concerned, this Read More ...

I’m a little peeved that this scene got cut. The movie could have had so much more fun with the time period.

Zoë Kravitz and other actresses are urging women to vote against Donald Trump

Zoë Kravitz and other actresses are urging women to vote against Donald Trump:

“A new PSA includes Amber Tamblyn, Diane Guerrero, Zoë Kravitz, Maura Tierney, Erika Alexander and Kate Greer as they outline all the reasons why a Trump presidency would be horrible.

The actresses in the video also list policies that Trump has proposed that would be harmful to women, including several anti-abortion stances, with Guerrero saying in the video, “We can’t let what he stands for win.”

We're never really worthy of the gifts we receive, the important thing is to be grateful for them, and treat them with care and respect.

I want to use this post to clear something up. When I talk about toxic masculinity it always causes a big backlash, and I’ve noticed it’s mainly because men don’t know what it means. When I say I hate toxic masculinity, I do not mean that I hate that you’re a man or that I hate masculinity.

Toxic masculinity is THIS. Toxic masculinity is when men reinforce the idea that men should suppress and ignore softer displays of emotions that are associated with women. Toxic masculinity is reinforcing the fear of physical affection between men because it makes them appear too feminine or even ‘homosexual’.

It has to stop. Let men cry. Let men hold each other. Stop perceiving things that are ‘feminine’ as weak because outing your emotions is not weakness, it’s strength.

I wish me and my pops were this close tbh

They need to start raising their sons with affection and normalize shit like this. Literally babies need physical affection to develop and it shouldn’t only come from the mom. Starting young normalizes this because you should be able to have a son and dad touch and have familial intimacy (is that even a term but whatever y'all know what I mean) without it being gay. Which is fucking ridiculous.

Hug your fucking sons

September is a real bastard and should be treated with copious ferrets.

Sharing as a reminder to do things that make you happy when you feel depression start lying to you.
In spite of the fact that I love autumn and don't trust ferrets. Not your ferrets. I'm sure your ferrets are lovely. But every ferret I've met has wanted to eat me, so I'm just giving the whole species a hard pass at this point.

September is an asshole.  I don’t why.  Maybe it’s the lack of sunlight or the end of summer or some sort of ancient curse, but regardless, it’s always a hard month to survive if you have depression.  I’ve pulled out my … Continue reading →

I cannot IMAGINE why the people of Flint don't trust the state government about the water quality, or about the effectiveness of the filters.

It is just unconscionable that this could be allowed to happen and all I hear in national news outlets is about well off folks some billionaires trying to gain more power. Clean water is a basic human right! It’s a damn shame some go without. #Hate it!

thestirge: So I heard this story second-hand, many years ago,...

thestirge:

So I heard this story second-hand, many years ago, but the gist was that a friend of a friend lived in what was generally considered a bad neighborhood, because he was a super poor college student and it was what he could afford. He didn’t have any furniture, he just slept on a blanket on the floor and had a milk crate for a chair and like an old wire spool as a table. No TV, nothing in the fridge, no microwave, basically just bare walls and a roof to keep the weather off. So one day he comes home, and there’s a man in his apartment, just standing there, with this look of utter amazement and horror on his face, and he turns to the guy who’s just entered and says, “This your place? ‘cause I broke in to rob you, but shit, man, you ain’t got nothin’. Wait here, I’m’a be right back.” And the burglar left, leaving a puzzled college student alone in his empty apartment. But sure enough, the burglar came back a while later, and brought some friends, and they delivered a table, a couple of chairs, and a small TV. “I think I got you a bed, too, but that might take a couple days.”

So, the poor college student made some friends. And he didn’t ask where they got the stuff.

me: *waits patiently in a line in a busy establishment with limited employees who can only work so fast

every 40+ person in the vicinity: OHHHHHHH MY GOD THIS IS RI-DIC-U-LOUS why is the space time continuum not being broken to IMMEDIATELY ACCOMODATE me, The Most Important Person In The World,

As a person of 40+10, I think some (not all, certainly) of that behavior is due to our remembering when retail and food establishments were sufficiently staffed. Picture the supermarket you go to most often: How many registers are at the front of the store? How many of those are staffed on a weekday afternoon? On a Saturday morning? As a teenager, I worked as a supermarket cashier; out of half a dozen registers, I would say four were open at any given time, and all of them were staffed on Saturday, which was still the primary shopping day for a lot of full-time homemakers whose husbands got paid on Fridays.

Same thing with banks; my bank branch has at least six teller stations, but I’ve never seen more than half of them occupied at one time. The library where I work: My unit once had four people and now there’s only two of us. The Periodicals Department had fourteen employees when I was hired for it in 1994; now it has less than half that many people. Every single library department has lost staff as people retired and were not replaced because the budget would not permit it.

And the fault for that lies not with the impatient older customers nor with the Millenials or whoever may be behind the service counter; it lies with the 1% who won’t hire enough staff, won’t pay decent wages, don’t offer benefits, and basically sit on their wealth like a dragon on its gold. Our economy is basically at the mercy of Smaug.

You know … I hadn’t thought of it like that. The *most* impatient people in line, in my observation, aren’t the 40s – it’s the baby boomers. They’re from a time when stores weren’t open past 7 pm, OR on Sundays, and the jobs were full time jobs, not a revolving crew of part-timers – only so many of whom can be on shift at any given time because Corporate only allocates so many total hours for the store per week, and, only a few of them are authorized to run a register. They’re expecting a level of attention that doesn’t exist anymore.

thescienceofjohnlock: connyhascontrol: so this guy followed me...

thescienceofjohnlock:

connyhascontrol:

so this guy followed me yesterday after I posted some selfies and then this happened. At first I just wanted to say ‘anyway men are awful’ but I figured I might help especially younger female followers identify a douchebag when he starts a seemingly harmless, friendly conversation so let’s go through it shall we

First off, I have a big nose. Growing up I was very insecure about it but I’ve learned to not care about it now. Fact is it is something that is generally considered unattractive and this dude knows it. So he compliments me on something that he thinks I am insecure about but doesn’t get the expected reaction of ‘omg noooo it’s so ugly, thank you!!!!!!!!’

so he keeps digging: ‘do others compliment it?’ and ‘what do you think of it?’ He was waiting for me to confess that I’ve been insulted or laughed at because of it and that I cry myself to sleep every night. So he can be the one guy to find me attractive despite my tragic fate.

He picked a feature of my face that is not conventionally attractive, counting on my low self-esteem so I would be grateful and he’d prove that he’s ‘not like all the other guys’

and as soon as I made it clear I don’t have vulnerability to exploit he blocked me lmao

TL;DR men will use your insecurities so don’t give them the opportunity and don’t open up to them

This is actually really important, I’ve experienced this kind of thing many times and it’s only in the last few years that I know what these men are doing.

It seems harmless but in reality this is insidious, manipulative and devious.

“Recently, my son said to me after seeing a ballet on television: ‘It’s beautiful, but I don’t like it.’ And I thought, Are many grown-ups capable of such a distinction? It’s beautiful, but I don’t like it. Usually, our grown-up thinking is more along the lines of: I don’t like it, so it’s not beautiful. What would it mean to separate those two impressions for art making and for art criticism?”
